I’ve realized something as I reminisce about Kiki’s Delivery Service while I’m currently writing a Kiki’s Delivery Service AU Stardew Valley fanfiction; writing out the story beats, without the Studio Ghibli visuals and music, makes the story into a slow downward spiral of misery. And this made me realize something about the movie that didn’t sink in on my first viewing; Kiki’s slipping into depression is a direct result of the reality of adult responsibilities hitting a 13 year old for the first time. And yes, people have made that analysis before, but it really reflects how our society tries to get kids to pigeonhole themselves into who they’re going to be for the rest of their lives at really young ages. Growing up I remember all the times parents and teachers would ask me what I want to do for a job, who I want to be when I grow up, and I consistently didn’t know or gave them a half-hearted answer that I didn’t think through all that much. And all that insistence from authority figures to pick something and stick with it wormed it’s way into my psyche, causing me anxiety and stress later down the line when I was still trying to figure out who I was and who I wanted to be. Kiki loves being a witch but hasn’t really developed any skills other than her flying, and she’s only 13 when she’s directed by tradition to leave home and start out on her own, get a job, make a living, contribute to society, she’s only 13 when she’s forced into adulthood. And as time goes on the flying becomes routine and mundane, the deliveries get less rewarding, and she slips into a depression that nearly takes away her magic. When I was a kid I liked the idea of being an artist, and when college came around I didn’t like the idea of studying for any other major so I chose to pursue art as my major. Every day, the reality of getting a real job to actually make money with is at the forefront of my mind and I do all I can to not be incapacitated by depression. I wonder how Kiki would be doing at my age, if she’d still have her magic, if she’d keep running deliveries. I wonder how long my fascination with art as a career path will last, how long I’ll be able to keep making art even as a hobby. The periods of burnout seem to last longer each time they hit.
