I’m studying Illustration now! Here’s some of the stuff I’m doing for class!

We’re buried with work here, but at the same time learning a lot!

Here are some anatomy studies:

We’re taught the importance of copying to learn. Unless you’re copying poses, for example, it’s very hard to learn how to do them from memory later - even the most skilled artists copy and use references.

We also get projects, one was to make an illustration imitating the style of an artist, I chose Ken Wong. We would design the image, but we had to try to get close to their style. I had to do it with colour pencils, so I chose to try use similar colours and thematics. We have to learn to be versatile in case we’ll work in a studio for example, to adapt to different styles, so it’s a very interesting exercise.

We do A LOT of sketches for every project, here are some:

And here’s the final result!

I’m pretty proud of this one! I’ve been drawing more than ever.

And here’s a punk goat I made for a shirt design:

Overall I’m pretty happy with these studies despite the stress and neverending work!

The simplicity of Florence belies how effectively it is able to construct metaphor through mechanical engagement. Moments of repetition inspire a sense of safety, while moments of ease and fluidity in execution inspire a sense of understanding with the characters and the relationship forming between them. All of this is achieved with very easy to understand interactions, to the point where the metaphor and the narrative play are effectively one and the same.

While the visual design of Monument Valley takes significant advantage of geometrical optical illusions, the levels are still easily navigable due to two important design decisions: A) the consistency of having the plane/object with the highest point on the 2D screen act as the “topmost’ object, and B) having the main character of Ida auto-navigate to each location with a single button tap (as long as she can actually get there).
