Letters From An American

Tonight, just before midnight, the state of Georgia indicted former president Donald J. Trump and 18 others for multiple crimes committed in that state as they tried to steal the 2020 presidential election. A special-purpose grand jury made up of citizens in Fulton County, Georgia, examined evidence and heard from 75 witnesses in the case, and issued a report in January that recommended indictments. A regular grand jury took the final report of the special grand jury into consideration and brought an indictment.  

“Trump and the other Defendants charged in this Indictment refused to accept that Trump lost” the 2020 presidential election, the indictment reads, ”and they knowingly and willfully joined a conspiracy to unlawfully change the outcome of the election in favor of Trump. That conspiracy contained a common plan and purpose to commit two or more acts of racketeering activity in Fulton County, Georgia, elsewhere in the State of Georgia, and in other states.” 

The indictment alleges that those involved in the “criminal enterprise” “constituted a criminal organization whose members and associates engaged in various related criminal activities including, but not limited to, false statements and writings, impersonating a public officer, forgery, filing false documents, influencing witnesses, computer theft, computer trespass, computer invasion of privacy, conspiracy to defraud the state, acts involving theft, and perjury.” 

That is, while claiming to investigate voter fraud, they allegedly committed election fraud. 

And that effort has run them afoul of a number of laws, including the Georgia Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations (RICO) Act, which is broader than federal anti-racketeering laws and carries a mandatory five-year prison term. 

Those charged fall into several categories. Trump allies who operated out of the White House include lawyers Rudy Giuliani (who recently conceded in a lawsuit that he lied about Georgia election workers Ruby Freeman and Shaye Moss having stuffed ballot boxes),  John Eastman, Kenneth Chesebro, Jeffrey Clark, Jenna Ellis, and Trump’s White House chief of staff Mark Meadows. 

Those operating in Georgia to push the scheme to manufacture a false slate of Trump electors to challenge the real Biden electors include lawyer Ray Stallings Smith III, who tried to sell the idea to legislators; Philadelphia political operative Michael Roman; former Georgia Republican chair David James Shafer, who led the fake elector meeting; and Shawn Micah Tresher Still, currently a state senator, who was the secretary of the fake elector meeting. 

Those trying to intimidate election worker and witness Ruby Freeman include Stephen Cliffgard Lee, a police chaplain from Illinois; Harrison William Prescott Floyd, executive director of Black Voices for Trump; and Trevian C. Kutti, a publicist for the rapper formerly known as Kanye West. 

Those allegedly stealing data from the voting systems in Coffee County, Georgia, and spreading it across the country in an attempt to find weaknesses in the systems that might have opened the way to fraud include Trump lawyer Sidney Powell; former Coffee County Republican Committee chair Cathleen Alston Latham; businessman Scott Graham Hall; and Coffee County election director Misty Hampton, also known as Emily Misty Hayes.  

The document also referred to 30 unindicted co-conspirators.

Trump has called the case against him in Georgia partisan and launched a series of attacks on Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis. Today, Willis told a reporter who asked about Trump’s accusations of partisanship: “I make decisions in this office based on the facts and the law. The law is completely nonpartisan. That's how decisions are made in every case. To date, this office has indicted, since I’ve been sitting as the district attorney, over 12,000 cases. This is the eleventh RICO indictment. We follow the same process. We look at the facts. We look at the law. And we bring charges."

The defendants have until noon on August 25 to surrender themselves to authorities.

J. Robert Oppenheimer was certainly one of the more complex men – with one of the more complex legacies – in modern history.

He was a scientist who believed in the sanctity of life, and yet his greatest discovery is forever linked to massive death. He was called both a war hawk and a communist, but in this film, he refers to himself as a New Deal Democrat. He created the most awesome weapon in American history (at the time), but he apparently sincerely hoped the specter of nuclear Armageddon would stop people from using it.

His invention of the atomic bomb certainly put an exclamation point on the end of World War II, and yet as Oppenheimer points out, it may not have even been necessary. Hitler was dead, Germany had fallen, and the Japanese were teetering. Chances are good they would have surrendered even without having two of their cities annihilated. (Oppenheimer actually tried to talk Harry S. Truman out of using the bomb on Japan, feeling that just the knowledge that it was there may be enough of a deterrent.) He spent much of his later life trying to protest the use of his greatest achievement.

He was a loving, doting husband and also a total womanizer. He was a good friend and at the same time he was rather self-involved. He became a scientific celebrity, but he was an intensely private man who rather hated the spotlight. He was a mostly non-political man who became entangled in several political morasses. He had passionately held beliefs, but he often was unwilling to fight the injustices going on around him, simply hoping against hope that the people on the other side would come to their senses. And he always overestimated the intrinsic good in people.

It perhaps makes a certain amount of sense that the film about Oppenheimer’s life would be helmed by Christopher Nolan, a similarly complex character. Nolan is a brilliant filmmaker (The Dark Knight, Inception, Memento), but not always all that good as a storyteller (Interstellar, Tenet, Batman Begins).

Well, with Oppenheimer, Nolan has one hell of a story to tell. It’s smart, thought-provoking, tragic, and intensely timely even decades after the action took place. And even though the film runs a little bit long (three hours!) and has occasional slow patches, it is quite probably Nolan’s best film.

Based on the Pulitzer Prize–winning 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin, Oppenheimer takes a measured, scientist’s perspective to the life and times of a flawed but basically brilliant man. From his youth in university, through the Manhattan Project and his later time as an advocate against nuclear proliferation, Oppenheimer flips back and forth through the years and history, putting a microscope on a man who probably never totally wanted the scrutiny.

Framed around an attempted political takedown of the scientist in his later years, Oppenheimer is both a courtroom drama and a truly inspired celebration of science, both its good and bad aspects.

Along those lines, know going in that Oppenheimer is not going to dumb things down for mass consumption. It is often talky and takes on complicated scientific and philosophical concepts and respects the audience enough to assume that they will be able to keep up.

Oppenheimer is a thoughtful, intelligent and gorgeously shot snapshot of our recent history. Do not be surprised to see a lot of this film on Oscar night next year.

The Scottish actor and director Kenny Ireland passed away on July 31st 2014.

Born as George Ian Kenneth Ireland in Paisley, Renfrewshire, the son of Ian, an RAF bomber pilot who was killed on a secret mission when Ireland was five months old, and Elizabeth (nee Cowie). On leaving Paisley grammar school, he worked as an apprentice at the town’s thread manufacturer, J&P Coats. However, his ambition was to act and he eventually left to train at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. Then, as an actor and assistant director, he helped to establish the Lyceum Youth theatre in Edinburgh.

He made his West End acting debut in Mr Laurel and Mr Hardy (Mayfair theatre, 1976) after the Traverse theatre Company’s Edinburgh production transferred to London. He was then a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, before work at the National Theatre, where he was Apollo in Peter Hall’s production of The Oresteia, and the Old Major and Pilkington in Animal Farm. By then, he was himself directing at the Traverse theatre.Ireland first appeared on television as an Edinburgh bank manager in an episode of the police drama Strangers. In between many other one-off roles, he played Sammy, alongside Simon Cadell and Carol Royle, in the first series of the sitcom Life Without George and the thuggish American media tycoon Ben Landless in the political drama House of Cards. He was also one of the regular group of actors in Victoria Wood: As Seen on TV, best remembered in blue dungarees and cap as the handyman Derek in the much-loved Acorn Antiques sketches, which lampooned the soap opera Crossroads. “

In the cinema, Ireland was in the Scottish film comedy Local Hero, directed by last week’s birthday boy, Bill Forsyth, other films included  The Big Man, but it was TV that we mainly say Kenny in appearances in  Dr. Finlay’s Casebook, Enemy at the Door, Taggart,  Dempsey and Makepeace,  Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, Rab C Nesbit,   Hamish Macbeth and many more saw that he was kept busy and the bills were paid between many theatre  appearances as well as at stint as artistic director of the Royal Lyceum theatre, Edinburgh from 1993 to 2003.

Of course Kenny is best remembered  for is role in Derren Litten’s Benidorm, which became an instant hit.  Alongside actress Janine Duvitski, the pair played a sex-mad couple who frequent the Solana hotel in the Spanish resort every year.

It wasn’t an easy role for the mild mannered Ireland, he recalled  “Half the things I don’t understand, There was one episode where I had to say, ‘Jacqueline prefers the sausage in cider.’ I said, ‘What’s funny about that?’ and had to have it explained to me. I’ve always taken the line that they’re complete innocents.

Ireland’s first marriage, to the writer, producer and director Marilyn Imrie, ended in divorce. In 1980, he married the theatrical agent Meg Poole

Kenny Ireland passed away on this day 2014 a month after it was announced he had brain cancer.

Gilbert so diabolically insisted that his Banking and Finance class—which was a mandatory requirement for all junior year finance and economics majors at Duke University—only be offered once a year, at 8:00 a.m., on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. Only a person who truly took pleasure in others’ pain would force newly legal-drinking aged students come to a 3 hour lecture at the ass crack of dawn three days a week.

And on top of that, Ken Gilbert didn’t believe in syllabus week. No, he insisted that his classes “get started right away” and “waste no time”, choosing instead to send the syllabus out two weeks in advance, with no less than 50 pages of reading due on day one.

And even more unfortunately for Rafe Cameron, he knew from his fraternity brothers that Gilbert practically jerked off to the Socratic method. And took attendance. And counted even one second past 8:00 am sharp as late and, thus, an unexcused absence.

So despite himself and in light of all the above horrible characteristics attributable to one Professor Ken Gilbert, Rafe Cameron found himself slouched in the back corner, of the last row, of lecture hall 401 at 7:55 in the morning, baseball hat pulled low over his head as his large hand absently swirled his iced coffee.

Gilbert was visibly readying himself for his big moment: the first cold call of a new academic year, and Rafe groaned internally.

He turned back to the lethargic conversation going on next to him between his SAE fraternity brother, Peter Shultz, and two men’s lacrosse players. Schultz and the lacrosse players—Dan Quigley and Sean Harmon—were replaying the night before: the drunken antics, the drugs, the girls they’d had and the ones they wish they’d had.

Maybe I should just go get laid, Rafe thought dully. Maybe then I wouldn’t be fucking miserable all the time. But Rafe knew he wouldn’t ‘just go get laid’, knew it wouldn’t help anyways, so he sighed somewhat defeatedly. Reserved to a life of misery, he supposed.

He added nothing to the conversation and actually found himself relieved when Professor Gilbert called the class to attention. As Rafe waited for the attendance sign in sheet to make its way around the room and all the way up to him in the farthest possible seat from the door (and Gilbert’s watchful eye) he listlessly sipped his coffee and allowed his gaze to wander around the 70+ person lecture.

Gilbert was at the whiteboard, pointing to a supply and demand graph he’d drawn with his back to the door, when it opened slightly, catching Rafes eye in his peripheral vision. He instinctively checked the clock right above the door.

Ooh, 8:10, he thought. Someone’s about to get their ass chewed, if what Rafe heard about Gilbert was true. He felt his lips twitch upward slightly, leaning back in his chair in anticipation of the yelling and flailing for which Gilbert was infamous.

Shit, maybe he and Gilbert had more in common than he thought, the way he found some twisted form of enjoyment in this poor soul’s rapidly approaching demise.

When the door opened a crack more and a petite, baseball-hat clad figure slipped inside, Rafe’s whole body straightened, sitting up so quickly that his chair scraped the floor, generating a loud noise and immediately drawing Gilbert’s attention directly to him.

It was an involuntary response, really, like how Army cadets stand at attention the second their commanding officer enters a room. The person who’d just stepped into the lecture hall—simultaneously stealing his breath and providing him with the very oxygen he needed to survive—certainly had that effect on Rafe Cameron. (And he wouldn’t really disagree with the idea of calling her his commanding officer, either.)

Gilbert fixed the figure with a blistering glare that radiated through the hall. “And you are?”

She was the bane of Rafe Cameron’s existence.

“Bane of my existence” is a funny phrase, really, Rafe thinks, recalling a conversation from nearly two years prior about the meaning of the saying.

Typically used to describe something one hates or despises. But “bane” is defined as something that causes great distress or annoyance; the source of harm or ruin. Historically, bane was also said to be something—typically a poison—that caused death.

“So”, Rafe’s enthusiastic counterpart had told him two years ago, “really, ‘bane of my existence’ could be used to describe something so wonderful that it’s distressing, something so perfect that it’s ruinous, something so sweet, and euphoric and fated that it’s poisonous, harmful, a cause of death.”

The hopeless romantic who’d convinced Rafe that love ultimately meant the destruction of life as he knew it? None other than—

“Y/n Y/l/n—“ you began, the sound of your voice raising goosebumps on Rafe’s forearms.

“Well, Miss Y/l/n, you wouldn’t know this seeing as you are more than 10 minutes late to my class,” Gilbert began, his anger—and volume—building as he went on. “But I have a zero tolerance policy for lateness!” He boomed, his sour mood causing the air in the room to curdle with the thick tension.

Rafe’s stomach sank as he recalled how, mere seconds ago, he’d been about to relish in your misfortune, ready to watch in amusement as Gilbert reamed you out in an unnecessary display of power. Now, he found himself running through ways he could somehow do something worse — offend Gilbert more — so that you and your tardiness were no longer the target of his withering rant.

Rafe watched as you bowed your head slightly, and he swears he feels—no, hears—his heart crack. He’s now hyper aware of how rigid he is, how fast his heart is beating, and how little he is breathing. When had his own baseball hat become turned backwards on his head?

He lets out a shaky breath as Schultz eyed him nervously.

“Oh gosh, I’m terribly sorry, sir, you see—“ you said apologetically but sweetly—sinfully so—your practiced southern charm coming out in full force. Though Rafe couldn’t see your eyes from up here, save for the baseball hat, he knew the exact look you were giving Gilbert right now. Shit, he could probably draw it on the fucking ceiling of the goddamn Sistine Chapel, he’d committed it to memory so well. Wide, blue eyes sparkling as they gazed up from beneath long lashes; pouty lips turned up ever so slightly in innocence.

“I’m on the university’s women’s tennis team,” you continued, voice syrup in Rafe’s ears it was so smooth. “And, well, we have morning practice on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. I’d hoped to talk with you about this after class, in private,” you lowered your voice somewhat conspiratorially as you gave a quick glance at the class, feigning embarrassment. Oh you’re on one today, sweetheart.

“But now my tardiness has bungled that all up,” you finish, bashful, undoubtedly shooting Gilbert your classic puppy dog eyes. Were your brows knitted together ever so slightly, too?

Rafe can’t help but let out a sharp breath of air in stifled laughter. You knew exactly what you were doing, and Rafe did too. But he had to admit, you were really laying it on thick with Gilbert. Must’ve heard about him being a huge dick, Rafe thought. Had to pull out the big guns.

“I’m so sorry for the disruption I’ve caused, Professor, but maybe I can find a seat and we can start fresh after class?” Rafe heard you posit, your voice still soft and sweet, but half an octave higher now. He knew all too well that you’d just flipped the switch from your sad puppy eyes to your hopeful puppy eyes, complete with the slightest smile and a demure glimmer in your gaze.

He didn’t know how you did that, seemingly made your eyes light up and sparkle on command, but God, what he wouldn’t give to see it happen up close and personal one last time, to have that very switch be flipped on him, to melt once more like putty in your hands.

Gilbert stammered slightly as he stared at you. Even he wasn’t immune to your charm, the old grouch that he was.

“I - well, I - yes, I suppose that’s fine,” Gilbert huffed, giving you a half hearted wave of his hand as he turned back to the whiteboard, the choppy, tense energy that had filled the room a moment prior now calmed by the breath of fresh air that follows wherever you go.

You made your way past Gilbert and up the center aisle of the lecture hall, angling to take a seat in the completely empty front row on the left. As you turned into the first row, you stole a glance up at the sea of students. And you smirked. And then you winked.

Was that at me? Did you just wink at me ? Who fucking winks? Christ, I didn’t know a wink could be so erotic. Wait, did you wink at me? What if you didn’t? Who the fuck else would you be winking at?

Rafe’s reeling thoughts were halted at the sight of your shirt, and his breath hitched, not for the first (or tenth) time in the last 60 seconds. It was a light blue tshirt, too big for you; a faded image of a ships steering wheel across the back, the words “St. Thomas” sprawled above it in old, navy lettering.

The shirt was worn; covered in a fair few stains. The collar was frayed slightly on the left side, and there was a tiny hole in the right shoulder.

Rafe knew because it was his shirt.

Rafe knew because he’d been there when an ember from a boneyard bonfire jumped up and singed that hole in the right shoulder, you yelping sharply and him panicking slightly before you both broke into a fit of laughter.

Just like you’d been there when he popped a bottle of red wine, depositing the faintest array of purple dots that he knew still littered the left hem. You’d been there when he’d dropped hot sauce right down the front, and you’d been there when he accidentally bleached the corner of the right sleeve when you tried to show him how to do laundry the first time freshman year.

Rafe had been there when he first noticed that frayed collar, after you’d stolen the shirt from his drawer and he found himself memorizing every detail, every stain, every memory of you inextricably woven into his new favorite shirt; memorizing how it hung on your body, loving how so seemingly enveloped you were in a piece of clothing that belonged to him.

Seeing you sitting there—a mere 100 feet and 20 rows away—in his shirt— his shirt! — after all this time made his heart lurch with hope.

And when you removed your baseball hat to shake out your ponytail, raking your fingers through your hair and massaging your scalp in that way he knew you loved so much — leaving your hair tousled and slightly unkempt like you’d just been thoroughly fucked — it made his dick twitch, thinking back on all the times he’d run his own long fingers through your hair and massaged your scalp in that way he knew you loved so much, gazing into your eyes as he peppered kisses around your face, your neck, your chest, traveling lower and lower still—

Rafe had to get ahold of himself. Christ, just seeing you redo your ponytail was getting him worked up enough that he almost felt the need to bite down on his knuckles.

When you tipped your venti Starbucks iced coffee back and he watched your throat swallow once, twice, three times, he actually did. (It wasn’t lost on Rafe that you’d used tennis practice as your excuse for being late, yet had a seemingly freshly-made iced coffee with oat milk in your hand, which made him smirk before he frowned again. He’d always brought you coffee, precisely because of your chronic inability to get anywhere on time.)

So yes, the small framed girl in a baseball hat and a white tennis skirt who’d just slinked into this class and charmed Old Grinch Gilbert, was the bane of Rafe Cameron’s existence. But not because she was distressing, or annoying; not because she was something he hated or despised. Because she was something he loved. Something—someone—he loved so deeply and fully and whole heartedly that it physically pained him to see her, or rather, to see her living without him. Someone he loved in a way he didn’t know possible, in a way that felt so right that to not be together seemed to contradict the will of the Gods themselves.

A person so wonderful that it’s distressing; a love so perfect it’s ruinous; a connection, a bond, a partnership so sweet, and euphoric and fated that it’s poisonous, harmful, a cause of death.

You were all those things and more.

Yep, Rafe thought, willing his heartbeat to slow and his breathing to return to normal. Y/n y/l/n. The bane of my existence.

Your absence in his life had been slowly poisoning him for the last year. Being without you, it would plague his life and undoubtedly end him, he just knew it would. It’d be his eventual cause of death, the bane of his existence, forevermore.

It was torture to see you down there in the front row, in his shirt, shoulders hunched slightly as you studiously took down notes by hand. His predisposition to reach out and work the kinks from your neck—to smooth the crease between your brows with his thumb—it wasn’t a want, it was a must. An instinctual need to take care of you, to protect you, that invisible string tying you to him tugging at his very soul as he watched you adjust your oversized glasses.

Rafe frowned. No, he thought. Stop. She’s not yours, not your girl, your perfect girl, and she’s made it clear she wants nothing to do with you, he told himself.

In an instant, Rafe is back in your house, on that day, 9 months ago, hearing you speak those words for the millionth time. “I’m doing this for you.” “I really believe this is what is best for you.” “I love you, always.”

But then, almost imperceptibly, something shifted. In an instant, something clicked inside Rafe’s brain and it was as if the world had been off kilter and was ever so slightly beginning to return to its normal axis.

He couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was—not yet—but, for some strange reason, after moping and pining and wallowing for the past 13 months, four days, and 16 hours, give or take, he felt himself almost smile.

You were wearing his shirt.

Page 2. ---- Richard Dickenson, Shot by Detective, Objected to Having Bullet Removed --- ELECTS JURY TRIAL --- A Police Court, City Hall, Magistrate Gullen Facing charges of having two loaded revolvers, burglar’s tools, theft, and receiving of a motor car and receiving two picks and crowbars, Richard Dickenson elected trial by a jury. He was committed.

Kenneth Green and Sidney Birt, jointly charged, were committed for trial last week.

B. A. Pennock stated his car was stolen from Dovercourt Rd. July 11.

‘Det.-Sergt. Richardson and I were on Landsdowne Ave about midnight July 18,’ testified Det. H. Hodgson. ‘We saw the car that had been reported stolen in a vacant lot. While Det.-Sergt. Richardson was parking the police car, I took up observation on the stolen car. In a few minutes three men approached the car and entered. I recognized Green and Birt, I could not identify the third man.

‘They saw me and ran. I fired one shot. They ran up a lane and got away Green and Birt were picked up shortly afterwards. Searching the car we found the burglar’s tools and loaded revolvers. The revolvers were wrapped in a handkerchief with a laundry mark 103,’ the detective said.

Det.-Sergt. J. Nimmo related visiting the home of Dickenson Aug. 1. ‘I examined his leg and found a wound at the rear of the left leg. Det. Ed Tong and I took him in a hosital and had him examined. They found a bullet in his leg. He refused to have it taken out. I told him that he might lose his leg. He replied that he would rather lose his leg than go to Kingston. Later he admitted that he was wounded about two weeks previously when chased by a police officer,’ Nimmo stated.

Det.-Sergt. Richardson stated he saw accused Aug. 1. ‘The shirt he was wearing had the laundry mark 103 as did a handkerchief he had. This was the number on the handkerchief found in the stolen car,’ witness concluded.

‘This is not a case for probation. You have a record, and stealing from one’s employers is a serious offence. No restitution has been made,’ said the Magistrate in A court, in the case of Clifford W. Clifford, appearing for sentence on a charge of stealing about $200 from a dairy firm.

He was sentenced to four months definite and three months indefinite. Evidence was given at a previous hearing.

In the case of Edward August who pleaded guilty of receiving milk tickets knowing them to have been stolen, his worship said it was a mean thing to do. August was given suspended sentence and put on three months’ probation.

‘I wish to point out accused was in the army and discharged as medically unfit,’ said Crown Attorney Malone.

Detective John Standing related finding seven milk tickets on accused belonging to different dairies. ‘He told me he bought them from a boy,’ said witness.

Ben. SIlver pleaded guilty of recording and registering bets in a house on Harbord St. and was fined $200 or two months and was sentenced to serve 15 days.

‘Entering the place with other officers I found three sheets of paper with bets totalling $950,’ said P.C. John Mullin.

EDITOR:  Church and friends can challenge us for new year changes.  I knew a lady who lived by the word “Joy” for a whole year.  She had pictures, plaques, and scriptures around her home that included the word “Joy.”  A sweet message at church yesterday challenged me to pick a word to help me through life’s changes, challenges, and the insane ways of this world.  “Trust” is the word.    Proverbs 3:5 ( KJV) says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.”  LMartin                                

Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday is a federal holiday recognized the third Monday in January. Born January 15, 1929, the 2024 observance falls on what would have been his 95th birthday.  King is remembered for his nonviolent activism for civil rights.  His most famous speech was delivered at the Lincoln Memorial, August 28th,1963 in hopes to end racism:  “I have a dream...that we hold these truths to be self-evident that  all men are created equal…”

(That's Harvard on the Highway-- or what we called Greenville Technical College, situated on HWY 291!) Here is the LEAST that a student needs to know about NOT COMMITTING PLAGIARISM. 1) If you use another person's exact words, you need to put quotes around the words.  Then in parenthesis, list the name of your source referring your reader to your Works Cited page for complete information. 2) If you are paraphrasing the words of another person, then follow this example: Jesse Watters said that Claudia Gay's dismissal as Harvard's president was Not Racism; it WAS racism when Harvard hired her.      Happy  2024!!!! SALEM SCHOOL NEWS, OCTOBER 23, 1963 - (The following items were in the "Salem School News" column in the October 23, 1963 Keowee Courier). . .The Salem Chapter of Future Farmers of America met and organized October 9 for the 1963-64 school term. Officers elected were: president, Lynn Smith; vice president, Leland Talley; secretary, Roddy Smith; treasurer, Jackie Rankin; sentinel, Walter Hines; reporter, Kenneth Porter, adviser, John J. Rankin. The Salem chapter consists of 34 members. . .Linda Barker of the fifth grade and Harry Strickland of the third grade were crowned queen and king of the Halloween Carnival Saturday night. . .Our first grade children are working toward 100 per cent participation in the polio immunization program to be held at Salem School on Sunday afternoon, October 27. Old people and young people, we ask you to come get your Sabin oral polio vaccine. There are 37 boys and girls in our grade and each of us has a normal body. We ask you to help us keep it that way--help stop polio. . .The sixth grade has completed the annual "Progressive Farmer" magazine subscription sale. Over $100 was collected, which is the most of any of the past three years. . .Leon Patterson of the sixth grade had the misfortune to get an arm broken on the playground, but he hasn't allowed this to keep him out of school a single day. Maybe all of us need some of Leon's perseverance. . .Barbara Burgess of the second grade broke her leg Tuesday while playing at recess. . .Accidents seem to plague us. One of our teachers has a broken arm. . .Report cards were given out Thursday, and one little boy in the second grade went home crying because he made a "C." His family finally managed to calm him down, and he said, "I guess I'll have to study harder."

        Sunday morning, 30 November 1974

        I have abridged and edited this report for clarity. I was 13 when I had this dream (this version). There were several versions because of my lifelong interest in recreating dream narratives while in the dream state, some of which I built on for years. I have also included new AI images, though they could be better.

        The west wall of an underground utility room (fictitious area) in my middle school building has a "portal" into another world. I feel adventurous, entering a long, hidden tunnel (silver "hall" that seems like a giant ventilation system). I anticipate a science-fiction narrative as my dream's content. As I walk through it, I hear the metallic sound of my shoes against the "floor." The walls, floor, and ceiling are like aluminum but thicker. I am uncertain at which point I am "in" the "other" world. I see a pipe leaking green sludge that is jutting from one wall. There is a river through one section of the "hall." At times, it is maze-like.

        The "other" world features an "alien" zoo, but I only ever see a giant tan cobra. The men who maintain the zoo have purple and white skin with a zebra pattern. They wear green coveralls. (I call them "Zebra Men." They are somewhat reminiscent, in essence, of a Dr. Seuss character.)

        The cobra, when upright, is about the same height as the men, about six feet. I am unaware of the planet's name. The cobra is called "Terra Cotta." It is part of a (fictitious, I assume) poem that continues with "Naja Hannah."

        The cobra gets out of its cage (due to an unknown event) shortly after I arrive in the other world. Eventually, I decide to leave, and it follows me, though I am never wary of it.

         Although I discuss with schoolmate Charles D. as he sits on his bicycle and Steve J. how we can trap it to return it to its world (with Kenneth H. being in a later version), there is also the idea of using it for a moneymaking endeavor such as a carnival. I consider writing a science-fiction story (or book) as well.

        I started trying to summon cobras in dreams when I was 5 (never very concerned or wary because I knew it was my imagination - though I had recurring dreams during that time of trying to create a cobra in a hayloft - but it did not often work). There is also an occasional spontaneous link to vestibular-motor dynamics (REM atonia causality) because of swaying.

        In real life, I had told Toby I would be writing a story called “Terra Cotta” (based on my dream). He responded with “Interesting title” (without knowing about the content). (I had a false recall of there being a war movie with that title.) However, my main focus remained on continual dream journal entries.
