“Mama one more story please!”
Sasha chuckled, closing the storybook. “We had a deal miss thing. Two stories and then you’d be sleeping, remember?”
Kerri pouted, tucked into her bed with the covers pulled up tight and holding onto her stuffed bear. “But I’m not tired.”
“You have to go to sleep, baby.” She put away the story book and sat back down with her daughter. She brushed back some of her hair and kissed her forehead. “Just close your eyes and think about the fairies from your story.”
She exhaled dramatically, so full of sass in her toddler body. “Fine.”
“Good girl.” She chuckled, kissing her nose. “I love you, flower girl.”
“Love ya too, Mama.” The bedside lamp flicked off, only a small nightlight in the corner gave the room any brightness. Sasha was about to walk out when Kerri spoke up. “Mama?”
“Yes baby?”
“What if I see a monster again?”
“Kerri, monsters aren’t real.”
“Yes they are.” She insisted. “I told you I saw one.”
“If you see a monster tonight then you wake Mama up, okay?”
“Deal.” The little girl nodded, yawning finally and cuddling into her bear. “Nigh nigh.”
“Night Kerri. Sweet dreams.”
Sasha finally relaxed, finishing cleaning up the mess of her living room and making it upstairs. She got under her covers and sighed, wanting nothing more than to sleep and recharge.
As she closed her eyes, a memory came back from when she was not more than Kerri’s age. She’d wake up in the middle of the night and see someone with red hair and horns, sharp teeth and a tail to top it all off. Strange but what was stranger was they never scared her, not once.
If she thought back hard enough she can remember playing with dolls or coloring in her room. They had a name too, it started with an A? Whatever. They were all dreams but it was all so real..
A crash echoed down the halls and pulled Sasha out of her thoughts.
Sighing, she got up out of her room and padded down the halls. Her eyes strained to focus on the darkness but she couldn’t see anything broken.
Only the light under Kerri’s door gave her any light. She listened again and heard the floorboards creaking, the noise coming from Kerri’s room.
That girl.
Sasha walked quietly and opened the door. “Kerri come on, you gotta get back in-“ she turned on the light on the wall as she spoke, going mute as she stared at what was in front of her.
Kerri was there, sitting on the floor with a wide smile and giggling but that wasn’t what Sasha was staring at. Instead she was focused on the person sitting across from her. With red hair and horns, pointed teeth and fangs and a tail too..
“See Mama!” Kerri got up and ran over, hugging her legs. She smiled widely up at her. “I told you monsters were real!”
She was speechless as she watched them get up from the floor, standing the middle of the pink room.
“Hey, Sasha. You’ve gotten bigger.” They chuckled, rubbing the back of their neck as they shifted from foot to foot.
“You know Netra, Mama?” Kerri looked between them both.
She had to be dreaming, she had to be. She squeezed her eyes shut and opened them again, still seeing the monster, Netra, standing in the middle of her daughters room.
“I’m real, Sash.” She chuckled, Kerri giggling with her. “Just like before.”
“Anetra?” She whispered, everything clicking into place. “So those weren’t dreams?”
“No, they weren’t.” Anetra smiled. “All of it was real. It’s good to see you again.”
“You too.” She mumbled. None of those were dreams? Her head was working overtime to process all of what was happening but that was quickly cut off. Kerri tugged her hand, trying to get her into her room and on the floor. “We was coloring together. Come join, Mama.”
She looked at her daughter and then back to Anetra, seeing how bashful and awkward the monster was. Maybe just this one time?
“Sure, baby. Jist a little bit of coloring then bed.”
“Okay!” The girl grabbed them all coloring books and went to town with her markers. Anetra smiled and talked with Kerri mostly, coloring careful whine Sasha watched. Tomorrow morning she was definitely having a conversation with Kerri.
