Was trying to think of the reason of the Love Triangle between the boys and Mare and I think I got something down lol.

— Kilorn is the representation of Mare’s life as a Red and of her past, being the reason why she’s so overprotective and constantly wanting to keep him safe. But also not wanting to pursue him romantically because her life as a Red was horrible, and because of how much hatred he harbors for Silvers and that of the unknown (back when he found out she’s a Newblood and didn’t react positively). Her rejecting Kilorn is a milestone for her, refusing to let her hatred and anger of Silvers and of her identity as a Newblood consume her.

— Maven represents War and the present, a person she is afraid of becoming because of the similar circumstances they were both brought into. They were used and turned into people neither of them wanted to be, making Mare afraid that she’s capable of becoming just as bad of a person. Because of war shes made to change, forced to do things she doesn’t like. She pursues him at the start because it’s easy to find comfort in war and anger, especially when it’s painted with rose tinted glasses. But through the series she shows distress in Maven, each time distancing herself from him. In a way, killing Maven signified letting go of the war. That it doesn’t define her.

— Lastly Cal, being Peace and the future. From the very start we see Cal as someone soothing, the person who hears Mare out and offers her the job position in Summerton. Mare is hesitant to seek him out romantically and at times loathes him, but he is also the only other person who understands her. Cal had constantly shown support and compassion to both Silvers, Reds, and Newbloods through the series (showing distaste when Mare kills Silvers, sneaking out at night into red villages to be a better king, etc.) He is a constant warming presence for her, even if she doesn’t seek it. Though Mare sometimes clashes with peace, as getting it is not easy by no means. In order to achieve peace sacrifices have to be made, and you have to let go of war. Seeking Peace in the midst of War can be hard, especially when you’ve faced so much tragedy. Coming to terms to it after war’s over is even harder. But in the end, Peace is what she needs the most to overcome the trauma and grief. It’s the one she stays with by choosing Cal.

mare: 2/10 she has some ass she just has no idea what she’s doing with it

cal: 6/10 he also has no idea what hes doing but his glutes are so phat that 6 is quite literally the lowest he can score

maven: this one is really difficult bcuz at first thought i thought he’s too skinny and a flop to shake ass but then i thought about it more and how he’s definitely bottomed out and so…. what? i guess a 7/10? maybe controversial but hes got to be better than cal at something and that’s definitely not being king

diana: deadass 1/10

kilorn: 9/10 he says he’s a natural but he actually practised

shade: 10/10 an actual natural

iris: 4/10 she just doesn’t want to learn how or even attempt but 4 points for potential

actually obsessed with how mare and kilorn weren't really supposed to be together. Like they care for each other but instead of mare having to choose between her childhood friend and the prince she has to choose between the the more insane and teeth-gnashing option of two prince brothers. idk I liked that little subversion from the ya dystopian genre.

although I will say that I've noticed some development in him. I remember in Glass Sword that he was kind of insecure and jealous about not having an ability or anything uniquely special about him.

but in War Storm, this interaction with Cameron's dad and how he replied made him sound like he wasn't insecure or jealous anymore. He's Kilorn, and he's happy to be just that

how well the red queen ships would fare in a long distance relationship:

marecal: absolutely terrible. mare gets insecure but doesn’t know how to communicate her fears of losing him and cal can never pick up on why she’s pissed off at him all the time. kilorn has to block them both for his mental happiness because mare keeps sending him edgy text messages and cal keeps ringing him up stressed out of his mind. when one flies down to see the other they are inseparable but arguing all the time and the goodbyes are always painfully drawn out and they’re both crying for the next three hours over it.

evane: evangeline will get a little jealous when she hears about a new friend of elane’s and elane will get FOMO when she hear about thing evangeline is doing without her but they communicate effectively and would spend a lot of dough visiting each other as much as they can even if its mot so reasonable. i think this is the couple that will be the least likely to ever do long distance because they literally cant be separated it would have to take a miracle.

sharley: they are pretty okay. they miss each other heaps and when they facetime it hits how far the other is and diana will stay up late at night sweating about not being around shade for too long but other than that they don’t get very jealous of people around them and are secure in their love.

kilorn x cameron: stable as hell. kilorn gets occasionally sad but both are so busy with their lives they can go two weeks without a text and then remember ‘oh shit havent called my gf/bf’ in a while and when they do its no big deal. kilorn texts cameron an ‘i miss you’ text and gets his response 8 hours later and its chill. and then they meet up and hang like they saw each other last tuesday. they dont want to be apart but they know its not gonna last forever.

thomaven: maven is absolutely terrible at it. thomas will go away and 72 hours later maven will show up at his front door with no warning.

gisa x shopgirl: probably the most stable. there could be sabotage ploy after sabotage ploy on this ship and they would still make it out the other end without breaking a sweat.

"You love like it hurts you."

Kilorn stokes the waning embers of the fire. He knows it will not roar again as it has hours before. The glow is enough to illuminate his and Mare's faces, the stars above pin pricks in the black blanket of night.

The embers crackle, futile. Kilorn hums. Mare was lucky she caught him outside, she was lucky she caught him at all. The Notch was big enough for him to avoid her. I let her find me.

It's an empty assurance.

"I think you loved me, and I think I could have loved you." Mare continues, purple electricity crackling across her knuckles. She loved to hurt, this Kilorn knew. Mare isn't the kind of person to shy away from a fight.

Kilorn isn't looking for one. Yet an inquisitive "Really?" crumbles out from his dry throat.

"Yeah," Mare says, fiddling with a rock, thumbs smoothing over it, as if she could cause thousands of years of erosion in a single action. "I would have had to learn."

Kilorn searches for her eyes in the low-light. The embers are barely glowing. Her eye sockets are dark shadows, indecipherable. He pokes at the fire again, sparks flying and falling into nothing.

Kilorn sighs, tosses his stick to the side. He stands up, brushing off the specks of dirt and finds his way to his room in the darkness.

He doesn't want to fight Mare, not when she's already won.

Red Queen Character in the Beach🏖

Mare: Playing Competitive Volleyball with Evangeline🏐🔪

Cal: Set up the tent, bbq station and tried to join Mare cause she looks really nice in her swimwear. (Got bullied out of the court by Evangeline)😔

Kilorn: Swimming with the fishes, only resurfacing when his hungry. Comforted Cal when Evangeline bullied him out of the volleyball court. 🐠

Farley: Played volleyball with Mare and Evangeline, never came back when the food was ready.🥙

Shade: Wanted to play volleyball, but realized no one was cooking the food. Had a great time with Farley and he kept sneaking the best portion onto her plate.👨‍🍳

Evangeline: Playing Competitive Volleyball with Mare🏐⚡️

Elane: Watching her stunning girlfriend play volleyball, but ended up eating with Farley cause the food tasted real good.🤼‍♀️🥙🥘

Maven: Was only invited because of Cal. Watched Mare play volleyball a bit too closely then Evangeline spiked the ball to his face. Spent the remaining time trying to drown Kilorn when Cal was not looking.🌊
