An Ember

After a while of putting up with Ozymandias’s constant ridicule, Eira finally works up the nerve to say something after the king let’s a particular comment slip.

They were walking back from another training session in Mr. Rose’s class. Or, well, he was walking, Ozymandias was floating alongside him.

He was scowling, Eira was looking away from him.

Once they reached the quieter side of the school is when Ozymandias started in on his usual tangent.

“It was one singular punch! And you managed to screw it up somehow. You can’t even throw a damn punch right, what makes you think you can fight without me?”

“Leave me alone…”

“Yes, because that’s worked with me and with the countless others you let walk all over you.”

“I’m not in the mood. I already know what you’re going to say. I’m too weak, I’m too fragile, I’m too much of a doormat, too much this not enough that. Just save it, I’m already tired from class…”

He feels his wrist be yanked, and he’s spun around to face the man, whose now enraged.

“You have the audacity to speak to me that way you fool?! You will follow my guidance or you will get yourself murdered. And I wouldn’t so much have an issue with that if it wasn’t for the fact that you would merge with me!”

Eira yanks his wrist out of Ozymandias’s hand. He then turns around, and continues walking.

Ozymandias scoffs, “It’s no wonder you ran. You run from everything, just like this time. You probably even ran from your parents just because they said something you didn’t like. I hope they find you eventually.”

An image of a beaten and battered Eira, curled up in the corner of his room, shoots through his mind before disappearing as quickly as it came. Ozymandias is stunned into silence, not knowing where it came from.

“What did you just say to me?” He’s stopped walking.

Ozymandias stays silent as Eira turns around, a rage filled look on his face. He’d seen many negative emotions from the boy, embarrassment, fear, sadness, but never anger.

“You know nothing about how my parents treated me. You know nothing about how my life was before I ran.”

“. . .”

“But because I’m an actually decent person, unlike someone else I know, I’ll tell you, seeing as you apparently have the respect to not go digging through my memories. My parents only had me because they needed an heir to their stupid weapons company. Yes, I heard them say that, to my face. They permanently disabled me by fucking up my right leg, they beat me within an inch of my life any chance they could, and forced me into studying so debilitating and hard to do that I would pass out from exhaustion because they wouldn’t let me rest.”

“…I-“

“I don’t need your input. As you said, in your own damn words, I am in the same position that you and the others were in when they found out they were another incarnation. You’d think you’d have a little compassion to that. But no, you just are a sad pathetic excuse for a king who gets off on harassing a kid when you know nobody would believe him if he told anyone of the literal abuse you put him through.”

Ozymandias looks away.

“Leave. Me. Alone.”

Eira promptly begins blocking Ozymandias out of his mind after that. No emotional empathy between them, no memory sharing, nothing. He watches as Eira leaves, unable to discern where he plans to go.

It would be better if he didn’t follow him, that’s what he thought.

It would seem both of them have some thinking to do.

On Matthew Goode strawberry blond rewatch, I have just finished delightful Al Sur de Granada (Gerald 😍❤). I am doing Watchmen next. I'll focus only a little on the plot and mainly on behind-the-scene nuggets as there are some great (often hilarious) MG interviews. It will be a short rewatch! After that I will move on to The Crown (Tony 🔥) and then Medieval (King Sigismund 😬).

Watchmen (2009) is based on a classic comic novel by Alan Moore. Set in an alternative US in 1980s against a backdrop of  cold war and nuclear threat, former masked superheroes (they have been banned by the government) investigate the death of one of their own and unearth a disturbing plot that could change the course of history. Matthew Goode plays superhero Ozymandias turned businessman Adrian Veidt.

Ooooo, what about Ozpin's relationship to Ozymandias in this AU? Could we dig into that a little more?

Ozymandias’s view of his current situation is what tends to dictate their relationship in the beginning.

Ozymandias, after being dormant for a good bit, wakes up about 55-60 ish years later after the Great War ends. He’s not quite sure why he didn’t reincarnate immediately (although suspects it has something to do with the fact that there was only “minimal” conflict in the world, i.e nothing as bad as the war against Salem or the Great War) but he knows he’s reincarnated and he is NOT happy about it.

Ozymandias originally tried to forcefully end the reincarnation cycle by, well, killing himself with the sword of destruction. Thinking that the sword’s abilities would be able to end the cycle as it was created by the gods to destroy. When he finds out that it didn’t work, by waking up in Ozpin’s body, he is absolutely furious and distraught about it. He refuses to speak to Ozpin for the first few days. Partially because he’s in such distress, partially because he doesn’t want to ruin this poor kid’s life, and partially because he can’t believe he got reincarnated into someone so… incompetent.

In his mind, how could he and this child have any sorted like mindedness? How in the world are they in any way similar.

He eventually makes his presence known which spooks poor Ozpin, only serving to irritate Ozymandias even more.

The beginning of their relationship is very much Mandias having no respect for Oz or his situation, and generally him simultaneously ridiculing Oz while trying to train him to be a hunter (something he’s also not pleased with.)

Over time, when Ozpin gets more comfortable with the world around him, he begins to regain confidence and realize his own worth in how he should be treated. He lets Mandias get away with it because it’s really nothing he’s not used to, the way Mandias ridicules him is similar to the way his parents did, so with having no confidence or view of what worth he has he just let Ozymandias do that.

Once he starts hanging around STRQ, a group of pretty confident or seemingly confident people, he starts to get his own confidence to start fighting back against Ozymandias’s comments.

Such is the reason why when Ozpin asks if Mandias had a better plan to get the cane, it stuns the king into silence.

Eventually Oz gets sick of Ozymandias’s treatment and lashes out at him in a fit of anger. He then blocks off Mandias from their empathy link (something that allows them to know how the other is feeling emotionally and physically) and goes off to do something by himself. Leaving Mandias there alone to think about the situation.

Eventually Oz gets hurt trying to fight a pack of beowulves (trying to prove to himself that he’s got a right to be a Beacon) and doesn’t have the energy to keep blocking Mandias off, so Mandias feels the exact pain that Oz is at and quickly gets to where he’s at to help him. He takes him back home, patches him up, and waits for the poor kid to wake up.

Once Oz does wake up he still refuses to talk to Ozymandias. Eventually Ozymandias apologizes for everything, everything he said, did, etc. and that Oz was right, he didn’t ask for this to happen just like Mandias didn’t ask for this either.

Oz says that he doesn’t forgive Ozymandias because what he did will probably have a lasting impact on him, but that he might be able to forgive him one day, and that he appreciates the apology. Ozpin apologizes for nearly getting killed and Ozymandias shakes his head before saying that he should be the one apologizing because that was the direct result of something he said.

The two iron things out, there’s a brief period where things are a little awkward, but eventually it gets sorted and the two get along better. Ozymandias mentally kicks himself sometimes for the occasional rude thought about Ozpin but eventually those thoughts go away with the mindset that Oz can’t do it.

In terms of the whole possession thing, Ozymandias only typically possesses Ozpin when they’re in a tricky situation that Ozpin’s current skills can’t handle. He tends to let Oz try and handle it on his own but will possess him without asking first. Which Oz detests but doesn’t say anything because Ozymandias does tend to do in the times they need it the most.

But ultimately they go from hating each other to being friends. :)

Y. Ozymandias: we will be heading to the biggest museum in the city, the one with the most information.

It is called the Nikos Hall, kept after by the Nikos family. The Nikos family and I go back a while. I knew the first one to start the Nikos family.

Her name was Vermillion, and, if you remember, Noir, she was the General of the Valian military.

She was 7’5, a very tall and muscular woman, she wore lots of armor but I remember particularly that she wore a golden circlet.

She also had a tendency to make fun of me for being smaller than her. But she’d only do that if the person was considered “tall” by typical standards.

Say, you’re 6’0, she’d tease you for being understandably smaller than her just to mess with you

How’s the talk with Mandy and Ozzy going? -🐈‍⬛

[ Mandias and the other two kids come back to the apartment, Qrow immediately heads off to his room while Glynda sits down on the living room couch. ]

[ Mandy looks at her and smiles before heading towards Ozzy’s room ]

Y. Glynda: um… before you go in there, Ozzy gets combative when he’s scared or doesn’t want to talk about something. Keep pushing with it but don’t push too aggressively.

Ozymandias: I understand, thank you.

[ He cracks open the door a little bit and looks around before stepping inside. At first glance he doesn’t see him. ]

Ozymandias: Ozpin?

Ozzy: …in the closet…

[ He looks towards the closet and gives a confused look. He steps inside the room, closing the door behind him, going and sitting outside of the closet door. ]

Ozymandias: I thought you hated small spaces…? Because of…

Ozzy: I do.

Ozymandias: …I see. You don’t need to do that, you may have done something wrong but there’s no reason to mimic that situation again as a punishment. You don’t deserve that even if you haven’t been particularly nice.

Ozzy: . . .

Ozymandias: …however I do know that you feel like you do need to do that. But I hope that we could find something… a little healthier? To process things like this.

Ozzy: . . . I don’t know how.

Ozymandias: well I wasn’t expecting you to just know on whim how to do that, you three grew up without learning those things.

Ozzy: are they still mad at me?

Ozymandias: Glynda is worried, Qrow… is frustrated. But he’s frustrated because he doesn’t know why you do the things you do. In his mind you’re just doing things without any real intent behind them and doing them just because you can. Which I know isn’t true.

Ozzy: . . .

Ozymandias: so, in that vein of thought… why… do you treat me the way you do?

Ozzy: …because every time some nice guardian like figure comes into our lives and we decide to trust them, they throw us under the bus or try to hurt us in some way.

I’m happy for them that they can trust you, and I really want to too but… I’m too scared of what’ll happen if I do that.

I know logically you won’t. But emotionally I don’t know if I believe that.

Ozymandias: what do you mean that “everytime” a guardian-like figure comes into your life that they throw you all under the bus?

Ozzy: …they didn’t tell you …did they?

Ozymandias: about?

Ozzy: about how we ended up in that hell to begin with.

Ozymandias: …no, they did not.

Ozzy: we thought we’d struck gold for the night, we all had just gotten finished pickpocketing a bunch of rich people and were able to buy ourselves a good meal. Then this motel owner found us and asked if we needed somewhere to stay.

Of course we said yes and followed her back to the motel, we stayed there for the night. It wasn’t until in the middle of the night that a bunch of those shitty pursuers busted in through the door that we realized it was a set up. The motel owner knew we were necromancers, and called over the pursuers to come take us in the middle of the night.

They knocked me out because I kept fighting. When I woke up I was in the hall with other captured necromancers, I saw Glynda and Qrow, tried to run after them to no avail, and that ended up being the last time I saw them until I reached the docks of where the songbirds were at.

Ozymandias: . . .

Ozzy: not only that but… I am still kinda mad at you…

Ozymandias: for what…? If I may ask?

Ozzy: I know there wasn’t much you could’ve done, and I wasn’t asking for you to save my life or some shit. I just wanted you to be there for me when they did all that they did. Instead… you weren’t ever there except for when they nearly threw me into the Atlesian ocean…

Ozymandias: . . . I’m sorry. I’m assuming that’s why you wanted nothing to do with me after… one of those happened…

Ozzy: yeah… but at the same time I know it’s not realistic to expect you to put yourself through that shit just for some kid you don’t even know. So… I’m conflicted I guess is what I’m saying.

Ozymandias: I understand.

Ozzy: cuz like… you’re traumatized too. And that would’ve just added more to that.

Ozymandias: ! How do you—

Ozzy: it takes one to know one I guess.

Ozymandias: …I see.
