Gentle Remider...
Note: The fact that Mare thought Cal was such a liar for faking an accent, when Maven over here faked a whole personality.

quick sketch of younger Elara and her son
I was always intrigued by Elaras character and wanted to know more about her, it's a shame that so little is known about her or Merandus family in general. I believe that just like Maven, she was damaged and controlled by her own family and their ambitions (which she probably didnt want and was forced to achieve, just like she did it to her son).
She was a terrible parent, but here i decided to present her in one of her rare tender moments where she is singing a lullaby to Maven

Me, thinking back to this scene in volume 2 of Red Queen, where Mare's best friend, after declaring her one-sided love, also tells her that we don't choose who we love (who we fall in love with in this context of course), then she thinks back to Maven and their kiss from volume 1, when she had just kissed Cale not so long ago.
Me, thinking back to that moment in volume 3 where Mare says she's still clinging to the ghost of the man she thought Maven was and loved. That she wishes to believe that he is still there somewhere.
Mare telling Maven that he broke her heart as much as Cale did in volume 4.
Still in volume 4, Mare wanting to see Maven's body to be sure that he is really dead and that all her suffering is finally over, but at the same time, not wanting to see him and being relieved that his body was not found because seeing the Maven's corpse would have been the equivalent of seeing herself dead too.
Then, Mare, in the last pages, mentioning all the people she misses : Maven being in it.
Mare and Maven had a relationship that was twisted and toxic as hell, but they still loved each other...
Bonus : Maven briefly regaining control of himself, letting Mare kill him so he wouldn't have to kill her / because he didn't want to kill her.

rq flash fic friday
Setup: sequel to this
Maven leaves me standing in the hall, snapping his fingers to the guards. I heave, falling to my knees. After everything he's done, I still find myself betrayed. After everything he's done, I still find myself reeling.
Will you tell them? I want to ask. Will you admit you sunk as low as to fuck me?
I'd get no answer, even if he were here. My guards march me back to my room, silent, sneering as I struggle against them. "You don't want this. You don't want the crown sullied with a Red bastard, a Red disgrace, a Newblood to supplant the next Silver heir?"
Clover yanks my arm, twisting it, forcing me to cry out as we finally approach my room. They throw me on the floor, a cold stab of pain. My hand clutches my stomach. Maybe I'll miscarry. Maybe I'll be saved from this hell of my own making.
Not for the first time, I curse my foolishness, the girl who thought an angel had swept her off her feet. But there are no angels in this world.
My stomach turns. I'm too young for this, as is Maven, both of us barely eighteen. He'll change his mind. He doesn't want to be a father.
But before he can, another storms into my chambers, the clink of metal and whisper of might. Evangeline stares me in the eye.
And in her hands is a small, precious pill.

I'm always perplexed when people try to say that nothing can justify Maven's horrible actions because he didn't always have his mother to influence him... Except that I find that completely stupid. People really just say that if his mother isn't around anymore, he should be able to make an effort to change and if he doesn't, then he is completely responsible for his actions. Just, no. Maven was a sick person. Mentally. No joke. And in the worst way possible. His mother literally trained him to be a monster. Obviously he will continue to be even without her. It wasn't just his presence that was fucking influencing him. She literally cut his brain into a thousand pieces with her fucking powers ! FUCKING MAGIC POWERS ! How can you seriously expect the guy to be normal ? She turned him into a monster and just because she disappears isn't the magic solution to the problem. He still hears her fucking voice in his head. Yes, Maven made decisions on his own, without direct suggestions from his mother, but would he have made them if his mother hadn't formatted him from BABY ?! I think the answer is clearly NO ! If you suggest otherwise it's because you think Maven would have been a monster in any case which is contrary to what history shows. I'm tired of seeing people say that yes it's not his fault if he became like that, but to give ourselves moral superiority, we're going to add behind that he is completely responsible once he reaches a certain age and above all when his mother dies. No. It's not that simple. Yes, Maven did horrible things, but I'm sorry, it's not his fault. The guy's had his brains butchered over and over again since he was a baby ! It is broken ! Completely ! Even if he still has some lucidity, nothing can really cure him at this stage. I remind you, he's had his head tampered with since he was a baby. Maven became a person suffering from madness because of this. His actions are actions committed by someone clearly suffering from madness, and if his mother had never done anything to him, he would never have become a monster. Maven is not in the same situation as many bad guys with bad experiences that transformed him or simply having someone who has influenced him since childhood. This is someone who has had his head / brain reshaped by his mother's literal powers since baby. Can you even imagine ? This is a complete rant, but sorry, I don't understand how anyone can say that Maven is actually responsible for the horrible acts he committed. It's beyond an explanation, it's downright a big extenuating circumstance. I realize that many will disagree, but that's what I think. Maven is a horribly tragic character. Nothing will change my mind.
And if I could, this is what I would do to Maven's dear mother, that bastard Elara... before she touches the baby Maven :

What if I ignored the poll and did a "Maven takes Cal's place as the prince she meets first and the one she isn't engaged to" oneshot and it would be RIGHT after Thomas died and he pours his heart out to her after one too many drinks and--
