What happened to the Vacuan royal family?

In what would become Vacuo City after the fall of Paradise Oasis, someone built a "magnificent palace" that would one day become Shade Academy, and its protection attracted people to settle the scattered oases around it to eventually form Vacuo City. (Before the Dawn, pages 14, 142)

But according to the author of Before the Dawn, whoever ruled from that palace was not considered the king of "Vacuo".

In fact, at some point, all survivors and known descendants of the royal family of Paradise Oasis apparently disappeared, and no one mentions how or why.

When the possibility of modern living heirs to the throne comes up, the author has Professor Rumpole talk about the impossibility of tracing lineage back to the first king of Vacuo rather than to the last one, just as the author seems to conflate the original invasion of Ancient Vacuo with the later invasion of the Vacuo Campaign.

The last king of Ancient Vacuo is never named, only blamed for allowing Vacuo to become "lazy and soft". In terms of succession, he should be extremely important even if the people hate his guts. (Before the Dawn, page 173)

Furthermore, even if "conquest and war" destroyed most records of Ancient Vacuo, the people would begin to make new records after settling the beginnings of Vacuo City around that "magnificent palace" and its ruler. If that ruler was the last king of Ancient Vacuo, or obviously related to him, then any modern claimant to the throne only needs to trace their lineage back to him.

But no one ever mentions whoever ruled from that palace when discussing legitimacy, even though their descendants could have been ruling the land as short a time ago as 80 years.

So the only logical conclusion is that the ruler of the palace was some new warlord, unrelated to the old royal family. They might have possibly been the ancestor of the horned faunus woman who united and led Vacuo into the Great War and its alliance with Vale, and then into Vacuo's surrender to Vale.

Possibly, the magnificent palace wasn't the only fortress to appear in the clustered oases, just the biggest, safest, and possibly the only one that survives to the present day in any form. Because one way to avoid having any legitimate king of Vacuo during the classical period is to suppose that many warlords built palaces and tried to declare themselves king or queen, with no unified country forming until later.

since cinder and winter share some similarities in their journeys to becoming maidens—mainly that they were both promised maiden powers and that forcing the transfer was always on the table — i wonder if something similar is going to be the case with raven and whoever the summer maiden will be.

because i can see the potential there; raven's method of avoiding getting involved is running away, the tribe changing location every now and then to stay hidden; meanwhile, summer's lesson is "don't view the world at a distance — take an active part in it and the events around you", which could mean that instead of moving from one place to another to stay hidden, the summer maiden is staying in one place, practically hiding in plain sight.

i mean, who would suspect your friendly neighbor who has lived there for who know how long and stays out of trouble, when the maidens have been characterized as the type who journey around remnant, alone?

The Mighty Modern Vacuo

Vacuo might have been the Great Kingdom least impacted by the Great War, since they joined the fight very late.

In addition to the boons of their plunder, Vacuo's markets would enjoy a boom in trade with their new best friend, Vale.

Relations with Mantle (later Atlas) and Mistral would eventually improve as well, especially after Atlas entrusted Vacuo with the gift of a Cross-Continental Transmission tower. This gesture indeed involved a lot of trust in Vacuo's strength, since Atlas needed to have the confidence that Vacuo could adequately guard the tower from destruction and prevent the entire network from failing.

It is noteworthy that Salem targeted Beacon Tower and Haven Tower before turning her attentions towards Shade Tower. Qrow voiced his confidence that she would have a hard time getting her way in Vacuo.

Which reminds us that even before Atlas entrusted Vacuo City and Shade Academy with a CCT Tower, the Last King of Vale entrusted Shade with protecting the Sword of Destruction and the Summer Maiden.

Back when all four Great Kingdoms agreed to work together to build Amity Coliseum, Vacuo contributed a whole fourth, just like the others. True, in terms of sheer volume, Vacuo’s piece is the smallest, but we cannot judge something on size alone when we have no idea what materials were used to make it, or what purpose it serves. But we can take it for granted that the fruit of Vacuo’s labor was deemed acceptable by the standards of the other three great kingdoms. After all, they stood to lose much if the coliseum failed because of any one part.

Further, the kingdom of Vacuo manages to afford hosting the Vytal Festival in Vacuo City at least once every eight years, with all of the visiting student competitors, their families, and unrelated tourists from the other three kingdoms.

And most curious of all, what seems to truly concern Salem and her minions about Ozpin returning so soon is that he might convince Ironwood to seek aid... from Vacuo.

All of the kingdoms suffered from the Grimm attacks caused by the Fall of Beacon, including Vacuo, but remember that the only thing Mistral lost in the recent White Fang attack was an academy headmaster. That attack didn't cause any further damage to Mistral's economic or martial power.

Additionally, Atlas and Mistral traditionally have strong diplomatic ties, while Atlas should have some of the worst relations with Vacuo since their Mantlese ancestors seem to have been the first kingdom to invade Vacuo's ancestors. That would seem all the more reason to ask Mistral for help, if Mistral could help at least as much as Vacuo.

SALEM.

Her father, Lord Ithai, was the third-born scion of a noble house of no special renown before he rescued the princess Salome from a group of dissidents who had kidnapped her. In reward, he was granted Salome’s hand in marriage and the two fell deeply in love.

Their firstborn was a boy called Kalev, whom both parents agreed was the most perfect child in all the world. Salem followed him a little more than two years later—but her birth was protracted and painful, and ended in tragedy. Salome died as her daughter came into the world, and when Ithai laid eyes on the newborn child, all he could see was a murderer.

He named her Salem after her mother and decreed that she would never leave the tower room in which she had been born. While her brother was reared as the crown prince of the realm, Salem was raised by an irregular parade of nursemaids and servants—many of whom were quite cold to her, all terrified of incurring the prince-regent’s wrath by treating his beloved’s ‘killer’ with too much mercy, and several of whom were downright cruel.

Ithai came to see her only very infrequently; Kalev was a more frequent visitor, and although the boy was vicious to her when they were young, he began to realize as he grew older that their father’s treatment of her was wrong, and they struck up a sort of alliance against his abuse.

The older Salem got, the more she resembled her mother, and the crueler and more possessive of her Ithai became. Ozma found their way to her through Kalev, who willingly snuck Ozma into the royal household as a trusted member of his retinue, and looked the other way while his vassal and his sister murdered his father and vanished into the night. He did not hear from either of them again until half a century later, when Salem—long since immortal by then, and barely touched by the passage of years—turned up on his doorstep to plead for his alliance in her rebellion against the Brothers.

All of which is to say, this guy ->

…is her brother, and Salem was seventy-three when her rebellion began.

OZMA.

In their first life, at the age of six, Ozma was given by their parents into the care of a knightly religious order. From that point forth they were trained as a paladin sworn to service of the God of Light. These years were characterized by strict rules enforced by dispassionate taskmasters; the order produced warriors in the sternly, coldly benevolent mold of its god.

Ozma, sensitive and caring by nature but also desperate to be good, grew up to become an exceptional warrior beset by an aching, ever-present sense of desolation and emptiness. They flung themself into one just cause after another, caring little whether they lived or died—until the day they helped Salem escape her tower, and felt some long-dead part of their soul rekindle from the ashes.

The illness that claimed their life, the first time, struck as a consequence of breaking their vows to rescue Salem.

SUMMER.

Even though Summer was eight years old when she lost her parents, she has only vague memories of them. She and the twelve other people who escaped the onslaught of grimm that wiped Visage off the map survived only because Summer’s eyes erupted with a blinding flash of white light that momentarily scattered the grimm—and alerted a band of huntsman patrolling on the Vacuan side of the strait to the calamity.

By the time rescue arrived, Summer had collapsed into a catatonic state, overwhelmed by the explosive awakening of her own light. For a month, she passed feverishly in and out of sleep, never quite emerging from waking dreams; and once she did fully regain consciousness, her memory of everything before the onslaught had become jumbled and fragmented. It never came back, although she was able to piece together some information about her family based on the accounts of another survivor, Claire Espinosa, who was sixteen at the time and had often watched younger children—Summer among them—while their parents worked in the mines.

Because of her eyes, Summer grew up feeling the unquestionable expectation that of course she wanted to become a huntress someday. She didn’t even need to apply to Oscuro Academy: when she turned twelve, she was invited to enroll. The combat school’s stealth and infiltration instructor, a feline faunus called Silvester Kellas, became her closest mentor and something of a parental figure; her admiration for him played a significant role in her semblance manifesting in the way that it did.

Sil is the only person Summer trusted enough to contact after she chose to stay with Salem. He does not know all the details, but he knows that she is alive and involved with some sort of revolutionary movement targeting the Huntsman Academies… and when he learned about the sheer pressure Summer had been put under as one of Ozpin’s top agents, he was inclined to agree that something had to change. Soon after she got in touch with him, Sil applied for and received a transfer to Shade Academy, where he has been teaching stealth and infiltration for close to nine years now—feeding information to Salem, through Summer, the whole time.

OSCAR.

His adoptive aunt gets a rundown here. She found Oscar curled up asleep in a dry culvert one summer, when he was around two or three years old. No one in the area had any toddlers unaccounted for and nobody she asked recognized the child, so Henrietta kept him and raised him more or less as her own. For all intents and purposes, she’s his mother—but he calls her his aunt because she doesn’t like being referred to except by her name, and ‘Aunt Henrietta’ was the compromise they came to.

A couple weeks after Team RWBY and Jaune make it home from the Ever After, Henrietta turns up in Vacuo in hopes of finding Oscar; she is spitting mad about the situation with Ozma, and her presence (and sheer force of personality) helps to shore up the boundaries between Oscar and Ozma—not just delaying, but incrementally reversing the progression of Ozma’s curse.

Amity made it there (Pietro and Maria are okay confirmed) and you can see that there's a bunch of Atlesian airships but also Mistral ones. Maybe Vale as well but that's a reach.

It's clearly been at least a bit of time since they fell. Enough for apparently every kingdom to send forces to defend Vacuo, at least. Well, Atlas probably had no choice and those are what's left of their fleet, but Argus is still standing, so maybe they sent forces too. Idk

Jaune: *Yawn* Man. This Vytal Tournament sure got me tired. I hope my Team doesn’t mind me taking a nap this early in the-

*SCHWING*

Jaune: *With a Saber Pointed to his Face* …Noon.

Winter: Mr. Arc, I presume.

Jaune: T-That’d be me! Wait, were you just waiting for me by the dorms?

Winter: That’s classified. *Sheats Saber* Winter Schnee. Atlas Specialist. I have come to discuss matters pertinent to you regarding my sister.

Jaune: You’re Weiss’ sister?! Uh-! I mean-! We’re good friends! Yeah! Though I guess you could say we started off on the wrong foot…

Winter: Quite the laughable understatement, Mr. Arc. For you see, Weiss has detailed in her letters many instances where you publicly harassed her with your feeble attempts at courting her.

Jaune: Hey, I wasn’t harassing her-

Winter: In case you were not aware, Weiss is a very prominent figure in Atlas, and as such, receives multiple solicitations from wealthy suitors on a daily basis. Men with far more ambition and talent than you could ever hope to achieve in your life.

Jaune: Now, wait a minute. Just because I’m not rich, that doesn’t mean I’m not up to snuff.

Winter: Is that so? *Raises a Folder* Because this extensive background check I have on you says otherwise.

Jaune: Extensive what now?

Winter: *Reading* Lack of proper education. Zero prior experience in the field. And absolutely no training to speak of. The best I could find were your admission transcripts, which were all filled out using crayons for whatever reason.

Jaune: I had run out of ink, okay?!

Winter: SILENCE! If the circumstances were any different, I would have you placed under arrest and locked up in the remotest cell in all of Solitas! However, doing so now would violate the Vytal Treaty amongst the Kingdoms. So instead, I will advise you to recognize my authority next time you elect to threaten the sanctity of my dear little sister again. Verstehst?!

Jaune: Y-Yeah- I-I versteht(?) that, alright!

Winter: Splendid. I will be watching the tournament for the remaining of its duration. It would do you well to know your place in the meantime. That will be all. *Marches Away*

Jaune: T-Thanks, have a great day! Hahah... *Nearly Faints* Oh dear…

After:

Yang: Alright, VB! You’ve got nowhere to run!

Jaune: Knock it off, Yang! You’ve been chasing after me all morning! Can we please talk about this?!

Yang: Nuh-uh~ Ruby’s biological clock is ticking, and I’ll be damned if I let the Rose Bloodline end here!

Jaune: Don’t you think this is moving things between me and Ruby a little too fast? Can’t we at least settle for a date first?

Yang: Oh, I’ll arrange you a date, alright… WITH HER WOMB-! *Encased in a Block of Ice*

Jaune: …What just happened?

Winter: *Descending with her Maiden Powers* That should hold her for a while. Imagine my surprise it was just you two causing a ruckus around Vacuo. For a moment I thought Salem had arrived.

Jaune: Oh thank goodness! It’s you, Winter. Sorry for all the trouble, Yang and I had a disagreement and-

Winter: Never mind all that. I was actually meaning to talk to you privately about something.

Jaune: Really? Is it a mission?

Winter: In a manner of speaking, yes. Ever since you and your friends came back, I have been worried about Weiss’ sake. To think I once thought to have forever lost my sister to that blasted abyss…

Jaune: …Winter?

Winter: *Harrumphs* Alas. I have been thinking about your actions back at that bridge. You fought tooth and nail to protect Weiss despite your shortcomings. Believe me when I say you have shown yourself worthy of my sister’s hand and affection.

Jaune: Oh… Wow! Thanks, that’s a… That’s a lot to take in. I’ll be sure to think about it.

Winter: What is there to think about?

Jaune: …I’m sorry?

Winter: You misunderstand, Mr. Arc. I am not merely granting you my blessing to date Weiss. My sister deserves the best, and as your commanding officer, I demand that you provide the best for her.

Jaune: Uh…

Winter: FURTHERMORE! You are to, effective immediately, seek to copulate with my sister for the betterment of the Schnee Bloodline!

Jaune: EH?!

Frozen!Yang: !!!

Winter: With your Aura and Semblances combined, your firstborn will become a key component to winning this war, as well as generating the perfect heir to uphold both our families’ legacy! Of course, I do not plan on holding it against you in the events Weiss explicitly decides to have more children-

Jaune: Okay, STOP! Full stop! Demanding that I hook up with Weiss is already one thing! But you cannot in good conscience order me to sleep with her! She’s your sister, for crying out loud!

Winter: Exactly! She is my sister, and I intend on getting her the perfect husband! I was foolish to dismiss you before, but not anymore! Now come with me!

Jaune: H-Hey! Just hear me out for a second! What I’m trying to say is-

Winter: THAT IS QUITE ENOUGH! I will ask you one last time to not make this more difficult than it has any right to be! You can come along willingly, or I can drag you out by force! EITHER WAY, YOU WILL BE IN MY SISTER’S ARMS SOON ENOUGH!

Jaune: Y-You’re not serious, are you?

Winter: *Saber in Hands, Winter Maiden Powers in Full Effect* I WILL NOT BE DENIED OF MY FUTURE NIECES AND NEPHEWS!

Jaune: …I should get back to running.

No One Falls AU

In my AU, where nobody fell down the bridges, both Winter and Penny got severely injured. The girls (and surprisingly Neo) came just in the for the Schnee after defeating Cinder, who, again, ran with the relic after the massive silver eyes outburst Ruby had due Penny getting attacked. Jaune made it to Vacuo and started healing Penny there. After Team RWBY+ Neo and Winter got in Vacuo, it was just a matter of time till the Kingdom’s forces found them.

So yeah, Neo after getting by double-crossed by Cinder and saved by Ruby, doesn’t really know what to do now.

My drawing is Weiss having a breakdown due Penny and Winter’s conditions, she blames herself. I’ll give more details on later posts cus making an AU is very fun lol.
