sometimes it seems to me that the author originally introduced the Gai's character as a... joke? a bad ridicule? his appearance is presented very strangely and... a little insulting to him because other characters say things like that about his appearance? team 7 mocks him. his appearance seems "stupid" to them, that's so... so. they don't believe that he can be an opponent for anyone. especially for Kakashi.

and it was this character that turned up to be so great written, skillful, tough and kind at the same time, with touching, inspiring backstory, and that happy and well-deserved ending that the author gave him and Kakashi!

I agree about Kakashi and being handsome because Kishimoto has been clear about it but ‘Kakashi Retsuden’ isnt canon and is also written by esaka. Or do you consider it canon for yourself anyway? Just curious

I know a lot of ppl don't like the novels but the light novels are canon, first because Kishimoto didn't just draw their art, no, they were reviewed, approved and co-written by Kishimoto and were all stated in Shueisha official website as an official part of the Naruto series. And also because I have watched an interview with Kishimoto and his editor and they were asked about the novels and his editor answered while sitting right next to Kishimoto by saying that Kishimoto gave them a clear plan and plot points for the light novels, he told them what he wants to be in the novels and what he doesn't want to be there and that he was involved in pretty much all of it because he didn't want the characters to be any different than the image he has for them in his head. I will try to look for that interview and post this part here once I have the time.
