The Tutor (Snzfic, Original Characters)

I was trapped in an airport for about six hours this weekend (curse you, Southwest Airlines) and for some reason that was just the kick I needed to crank out... 18th century snzfic?

Huh.

Well, regardless, here is the result of my boredom. Eleanor Seton is the poorer cousin of a wealthy noble English family, and has lived with them since her parents passed away when she was a teenager. Christopher Annesley (known as "Kit" to his friends) is a graduate of Edinburgh University who aspires to be a lawyer but can't afford the school fees, and so is employed as a tutor for Eleanor's younger cousins. I do love this pair and I'd like to do more with them (possibly a part two?) so if you have any ideas for what I could write next with them please let me know!

England, 1770

Eleanor's face glowed in the dim firelight as she sat in the parlor, the only sound disturbing the silence of the evening being the rustle of pages turning as she read a novel. It was late, past 9 o'clock, and almost everyone in Ashwood House had gone to bed. This was perhaps her favorite time of day, as she could unwind and recharge in complete solitude, without the Dowager Marchioness lurking around every corner making snide comments or the children running after her and smearing jam and other sticky substances on her skirts.

Lost in her own thoughts, Eleanor was startled when the door opened and her cousin's tutor, Mr. Christopher Annesley, entered the room. He appeared surprised to see her as well, and stopped in his tracks.

"Miss Seton! My apologies, I didn't intend to disturb you. I thought everyone had already retired for the night."

"Everyone except for the both of us, it seems. But please, do not worry." Eleanor waved away his concerns. "You haven't disturbed me in the slightest."

Mr. Annesley gave her a small smile at that, nodding as he cast his gaze around the room. "I only came looking for one of my books. I seem to have misplaced it, though I can't recall where."

Eleanor followed his eyes, and spotted a stack of books on a low table across from the sofa. "Perhaps it is among those?"

Mr. Annesley crossed to the table, sorting through the volumes quickly. As he did so, Eleanor noticed he was sniffling softly every few moments, and there was a pink blush to the tip of his nose which could not be explained by the warmth emanating from the fireplace, seeing as he had only just entered the room. Something in her chest tightened sympathetically- the poor man appeared to be coming down with a cold.

"Ah, here it is!" Mr. Annesley held up a thin, leatherbound volume triumphantly, then suddenly sniffed (much more sharply this time) and began patting down his waistcoat, likely searching for a handkerchief.

"Here, Mr. Annesley, are you in need of this?" Eleanor asked, offering him one of her own handkerchiefs from her pocket. He looked more than a little sheepish, but accepted it gratefully.

"Yes, thank you. My apologies, once again," he said, turning away from her as he steepled it about his nose and gave it a soft blow.

"It is no trouble at all, truly. Though I hope you are not unwell?"

"A slight cold, I fear, but nothing more." He gave his nose one last wipe, then straightened up looking relieved.

Eleanor hummed sympathetically. "It is a dismal time of year to be unwell, what with this cold weather."

"It is only a mild annoyance, truly." Mr. Annesley folded the handkerchief in half neatly and awkwardly held it. "I should like to return this to you, but I fear that in such a condition..."

"Keep it," Eleanor cut him off with a smile and a shake of her head. "It is not my only handkerchief, and you may yet have need of it."

He once again returned her smile, gratefully, and tucked the cloth away in the pocket of his waistcoat. "Thank you, Miss Seton. You are very kind."

Breakfast at Ashwood House was usually a quiet affair.

The Marchioness, Lady Ashwood, breakfasted in her room every day, and all of the children (with the exception of Lord Edmund, who was away at Oxford, and Lady Charlotte, who was deemed old enough to eat in the dining room) ate in the nursery. The Marquess, Lord Ashwood, and Mr. Annesley were usually Eleanor's only breakfastime companions other than Charlotte, and all tended towards silence in the early hours.

The next morning, however, soon became an obvious exception. While Mr. Annesley's cold had indeed been relatively mild when he had gone to bed the previous evening, he woke up with his nose dripping more than ever despite being completely blocked and a nagging itch in it to boot. He tried to alleviate his symptoms by blowing his nose before leaving his room, but to no avail. Thus, he was forced to spend the entirety of breakfast sniffling damply and resisting the urge to sneeze.

"Are you quite well, Mr. Annesley?" Charlotte asked after he had forced back what must have been his tenth sneeze that morning (still using Eleanor's handkerchief, as he had forgotten to remove it from his pocket the previous night).

"A s-slight cold, milady, nothing more. My apologies for the disturbance." He winced as the words came out sounding garbled and nasal, and sniffled yet again in an attempt to rectify the situation (with little success).

"Not at all." Charlotte shook her head, her eyes wide with earnestness and concern. "I only meant to say... perhaps you would be more comfortable in bed today."

Whether it was her phrasing, or the fact that it was hardly a secret that the girl had something of a crush on Mr. Annesley, an awkward silence immediately descended over the table. It was broken only when Lord Ashwood, who had been concentrating on his meal with a wholly uninterested air, looked up.

"Leave the man alone, Charlotte. Have you not finished breakfast yet?"

She looked down at her plate, her cheeks having flushed pink. "I have, Papa. Please excuse me."

After Charlotte had all but fled from the room, the silence was practically impenetrable. Eleanor, who had been deliberately avoiding looking at Mr. Annesley up until now, chanced a glance at him. He was neatly dressed as always, with his hair pulled back and tied at the nape of his neck. However, the dark shadows under his eyes and the redness of his nose betrayed the fact that his cold had indeed gotten worse. Charlotte had been correct- he looked as though he should be in bed.

"Well, I must attend to some business matters this morning. Please excuse me, Annesley. Eleanor." Lord Ashwood stood, flashing the pair a smile, and then was gone from the room.

Eleanor knew this was her only chance to say something. "I see you are still making use of my handkerchief."

Mr. Annesley blinked at her, appearing slightly startled. "Yes, I, ah, seem to have misplaced my own."

"Then I am glad I could be of some small assistance to you in your time of need," Eleanor replied, allowing a smile to cross her face.

Mr. Annesley let out a breathy chuckle, though this seemed to be a mistake in his condition as his face almost immediately crumpled and he was forced to duck to the side with a wet sneeze, barely muffled by the handkerchief.

"God bless you, Mr. Annesley!" Eleanor exclaimed.

"Th-hhh... hih-tzshew! Ah-schew!" He was interrupted by two more powerful sneezes, each directed into the rapidly dampening handkerchief. "Snf... my apologies once again, Miss Seton. Those took me quite by surprise."

"No apology is necessary, Mr. Annesley, truly. Though it sounds as though Lady Charlotte was correct. You ought to be in bed."

He looked at the handkerchief sheepishly, and may have blushed a little at Eleanor's remark, though it was difficult for her to tell as they were already flushed pink from the sneezing (and a possible fever). "It sounds much worse than it is, I assure you. And I would not wish to leave my pupils unattended, as I believe education to be of the utmost importance regardless of one's own feelings." He punctuated this statement by wiping at his nose, though the effect was slightly ruined by the fact that it had clearly lost most of its effectiveness.

Eleanor considered him for a moment, then reached into her pocket and pulled out another handkerchief. She held it out across the table to him, smiling softly.

"Will you at least take this then, sir?"

Mr. Annesley hesitated for a moment, then accepted it with a grateful smile. "My deepest thanks, Miss Seton."

I follow too many football teams

Decided to sit down and compile a list of all the various football teams I'm following at the moment, across different leagues and countries, and note the reason I started supporting them as well as the extent to which I follow. I was surprised.

Arsenal WFC: started following the club on 4th July 2018, when they signed my favourite footballer, Tabea Kemme. Bought a season ticket and attended as many games as my work pattern would allow; from the first game I was amazed by Dutch striker Vivianne Miedema, the best forward I'd seen play since Robert Taylor's purple patch in 1999. Despite missing all 4 of Tabea's appearances for the club, I bought a shirt with her name and number on it which I've worn to every game possible, home and away. The last match I saw in person was a 4-0 win at Brighton back in January (easier to get to than home games, so of course I'd go) during which I realised that despite Tabbi's injury worries, I was in deep enough to care about the other players. This turned out to be prescient as two days later she retired from playing. Thanks to the FA Player, I can watch (almost) every match streamed live to my tablet.

Matches seen: 5 home, 5 away (Lewes, Brighton [Amex], Crawley, Spurs [new White Hart Lane], Brighton)

Shirts: 1 - 2018/2019 home shirt with Kemme 22 on the back.

Gillingham FC (mens): Where it all began. Attended my first game against Doncaster Rovers in April 1995, taken by my dad and granddad. The Gills won 4-2, my younger brother and I had room enough to chase each other around the terrace. Since then I've experienced nauseating lows, dizzying highs, and creamy middles. As of 21st May 2019 my support for the club has been on hold - they appointed Steve Evans - a man who had previously convicted of tax evasion and falsifying accounts, a man who had previously sought to incite Gillingham staff and players whenever his teams played against the Gills, and an all round nasty piece of work - as manager of the first team. I could not in good conscience support a side managed by him, in person or remotely, so I packed away my shirts/scarf/badges, muted the club's social media accounts, and my Saturday afternoons were a lot more fun as a result. He's still at the club, they're currently fourth in the League One table, but this summer they cut loose the associated women's side, so I don't know if I'll ever go back.

Matches attended: bloody loads. In the three figures, easily. Had a season ticket one year. Attended at least 1/3 of all games - home and away - in the promotion season linked above. Been going at least once a season for the past 20-odd years, mostly more than that. Away games at Crawley a few times (making it my joint second most visited stadium, apart from Priestfield and tied with Meadow Park), once at Spurs (old White Hart Lane), West Brom, Millwall (that was fun, got the tickets through work, ended up with the home fans, Gillingham got a last minute winner that we couldn't celebrate), Charlton twice, a reserve game at Leighton Orient, the above linked game against Wycombe when we went down, strangely not Brighton though despite living here for nearly 10 years.

Shirts: had plenty over the years. I've still got the shirt we got promoted in with Thomson 27 on the back, signed by a number of the squad, somewhere. Currently I only have two - the 2009 promotion shirt because it looks pretty good, and the 2011 home shirt because of fond Football Manager memories!

Borussia Dortmund (mens): Over a decade ago I started a relationship with a German woman. In the getting to know you stage, I asked her what her nearest Bundesliga* club was. (My small talk has since improved. Slightly.) She replied "Dortmund", and I started following the club. I'm not saying that I'm responsible for the team's subsequent uptick in form - they won the league two seasons running after I visited the ground, adding the Pokal (cup) in the second season as well - but I'm not not saying that either. The availability of streams plus the free-flowing, attacking football made them an easy follow, especially at a time when Gillingham went 35 games without an away win in all competitions. I look forward to the club starting up a women's side next season, especially as they're starting from the bottom rather than expecting to be parachuted into the Frauen Bundesliga.

Matches: just the one so far in person, an entertaining 2-3 loss to Wolfsburg in December 2012.

Shirts: had a 2004 home shirt that was horrible material, very plasticky. Also have a really comfortable and stylish 2012 away shirt that I couldn't wear for a few years due to it having Hummels' name on - thankfully he's returned from his Bayern defection now. A Munich fan who stayed with us a couple of years ago found the whole thing hilarious.

*I'm glad I specified the country, as while she grew up nearly 100km from the Westfalonstadion, she was only 20km from FC Twente - but it was complicated enough explaining to people in the early days why I was following a German team, and I think trying to tell them I was following a Dutch side due to my German partner might've been far too much!

BSG Chemie Leipzig (mens): Dortmund aren't the only German side I've hitched my wagon to, but they're the most high profile. Faced with an indefinite period of time with nothing to do during lockdown, and growing tired of my other FM careers, I set about giving myself a challenge. Due to the high praise dished out by the media to Red Bull Leipzig, a team funded by the energy drink conglomerate who bought their way up the league, I decided my challenge would be to - in the words of Sir Alex Ferguson - "knock them off their f**king perch. I wanted to make another team the biggest side in Leipzig. Scouting around the Wikipedia page for the city, and aided by this thoroughly informative Reddit post, I settled on Chemie due to their political leanings and colour scheme. Six real-life months and a dozen fictional seasons into the career, I'm one Bundesliga and one Pokal away from equalling the energy drink's trophy haul. I've taken an interest in the real life side as well, languishing away in the fifth tier of German football (an unholy hell of regional leagues and village sides).

Matches: not yet. One day I'll stand on the terrace of the Alfred-Kunze-Sportpark, Freiberger in hand, cheering on the side. But the raging pandemic that brought me to start the career is, ironically, preventing me from properly indulging.

Shirts: none, as I rarely wear football shirts these days. But this t-shirt is pretty cool.

Gillingham WFC: Simple thing here - when the side were cut adrift from the parent men's club as part of a cost-saving measure in the summer, I decided to go with the team who were not managed by an odious berk. I'm kooky like that.

Matches: one so far, a pre-season friendly away at Lewes last summer. I was the lone Gills fan. There were more dogs supporting the home side than humans cheering on the away team.

Shirts: none, as the club have switched to red after no longer being under the men's umbrella.

Valur (women's team): Some of these have deep, meaningful reasons behind my follow of them. Others, less so. In the early part of 2019 a friend of mine and his Czech girlfriend moved to Reykjavik to live for a bit. We visited them and were surprised to see floodlights from their balcony. Their flat overlooked a football ground, where Valur play, and so it was a simple thing to follow their side to feel closer to Paul and Barbora. It was weird seeing Valur's main striker, Elin Metta, posting Insta stories of playing with the same friendly cat that Paul does!

Matches: just the one streamed so far, due to a dearth of matches available online, but Valur won!

I wanted to get something football related to remember the trip by. Venice was out - I was going to the Venezia store anyway to pick up a few things for a mate who had guided them to glory on Football Manager, and didn't want to tread on his toes. Rome was unsuccessful - Lazio's kits have been cool in the past, but their right-wing fans aren't for me, and Roma had some lovely coloured merch but nothing that grabbed me. A surprise heavy shower sent us scurrying into the Fiorentina club shop, a place I'd earmarked to visit anyway, and a lovely flattering jacket jumped off the shelf at me. (It helped that it was reduced from €100 to €30!) Why the women's side over the men's? Women's football is just much more fun!

Matches: just a 3-1 loss to Sassuolo a few weeks ago. Who loses to a Phil Collins single?!

Shirts: no shirts, but a sexy jacket.

Ashwood City FC (mens, fictional): Ashwood City are Kent's only Premier League side. One of the founder members of the Football League, they've never been relegated from the Premier League. They're also fictional, the main subject of football podcast The Offensive. Now in its third season, it's been a weekly highlight, weaving current football events into an ongoing story arc. It's occasionally sweary, frequently hilarious, and clearly written by someone who's lived in Kent judging by the accurate jabs at Kentish people/Gillingham! It also used an entire episode as set-up for a reference to the 1992 Whitney Houston/Kevin Costner film The Bodyguard, which still frequently makes me chuckle at random moments.

I. PLOT

It’s been 100 years since the last class left Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. The once thriving institute for people born with a unique genetic mutation giving them extraordinary powers, otherwise known as mutants, had to close it’s doors for good because of a shortage of mutant students following the events of House of M. Soon, the world all but forgot that mutants ever existed, and stories told by the older generations were often viewed as nothing more than tall tales. But there’s a little truth to every tale, isn’t there? Over the past couple years, a new crop of mutants have discovered their powers and after being cryogenically frozen for 100 years, Scott Sommers gathered some of them together to reopen Xavier’s for a new class of students. This is the new generation of mutants. Welcome to Xavier’s,  G E N E R A T I O N  X .

II. BASICS

Generation X is a group verse set in the Marvel’s X-MEN universe. Since all characters attend Xavier’s, they should all be mutants but if you have a storyline that makes sense and you really want a non-mutant, human character, we can discuss. When choosing your character’s super power, you should keep their canon in mind and choose a power that fits their personality. Get creative so we don’t have duplicate powers in the verse. No all powerful characters will be accepted. On a scale of 1-5, no character should be above a 3 controlling their power, and they should all still be learning how to control them. Older characters could have a better handle on their powers but younger characters will probably still be novices. Though this takes place 100+ years after X-MEN canon, no canon X-MEN or next gen X-MEN characters will be accepted unless you have a valid reason for their return, (ex. Scott Summers was cryogenically frozen for 100 years.

III. RULES

There’s bound to be mature content including but not limited to sex and violence in a group like this, so we ask that all muns and characters be 18+, no exceptions. 

While in characters drama is encouraged, OOC drama will not be tolerated.

Major plots should always be run by an admin. (ex. major injuries or NPC deaths) Pregnancy and in verse children plots will not be allowed because they don’t really have a place in an environment like this.

Activity will be required either on the group discord or on the dash, but preferably both. If we don’t feel like you’re contributing to the group, you will be asked to leave.

Characters from all fandoms will be accepted as well as original characters.

Each member is allowed up to THREE characters, but we might allow more in the future. If you have at least ONE teacher, you can have a FOURTH character.

Duplicate face claims will not be allowed so if a canon face claim has been taken you will have to use an alternate face.

Duplicate powers will not be allowed so get creative.

I used to watch it, but that was years ago, and I don’t remember much about it, so this is just gonna be sort of a mashup of vampire/werewolf/hunter canon gathered from various sources and mashed into a modern verse, so, please forgive my utter ridiculousness here :

Braig would probably be a hunter of some kind. Right back to the whole ‘his whole life revolves around protecting others’ thing. He’s always been a night owl, so, he doesn’t mind the hours.

He loves flowers in this verse, too. It’s worth noting that Braig isn’t Catholic. That just seems to be the dominant religion in demon-dispelling and undead-culling. He also carries some things that are more relevant to his own (Blackfoot) culture: He wears a wooden charm carved into a sun as a pendant, carries a small hand drum and an eagle-bone whistle, and might also bring a medicine bundle or two, depending on the nature of whatever he’s dealing with, as well as a small smokebox filled with tobacco. (He doesn’t smoke, personally, but tobacco is traditionally used as an offering to the Creator, Na’pi, in Blackfoot culture, and, incidentally, it’s also good at keeping werewolves away.) Most of these things are small enough that he can carry them in little pockets or loops sewn into the inside of his trench. Anything that’s bigger, he puts in a leather satchel that he keeps with him at all times. 

He still fights with swords. Iron blades with silver accents, or something like that. Maybe silver along the blade, or a silver point on the pommel. It’s 2:30 in the morning. But yes, he carries two swords and adores them. He can use a gun, but he’s not as good at it. He prefers swords to guns because he finds them more personal, they’re quieter, more versatile, you can block with them, they don’t jam or require reloading, and, fun fact, it’s perfectly legal to walk around with a sword in Canada, even an unsheathed one, as long as you don’t ask someone for money, favours, etc (Then it’s intimidation). Guns? Not so much.  He also just prefers the aesthetic.

He has way fewer moral scruples in this verse than his canon. In canon, he often wonders why they’re fighting. Sure, he knows the droids are bad, and he wants them gone, and he knows Dooku’s bad, and Braig wants him gone, but, beyond that, why? If planets want to leave the Republic, shouldn’t it be their right? And then you have the business with clones, working with Hutt cartels, whether or not the Jedi should even involve themselves in the war… But with this, it’s like, ‘why are we fighting them?’ ‘They literally eat people, Braig’, ‘oh okay’. Not many problems.

He doesn’t speak nearly as many languages in this verse, but he does have a vested interest in old/dead languages. He’s pretty good at Latin, and is working on Sanskrit, as well. I imagine he spends a lot of times in libraries, archives, and museums, when he’s not on the hunt. (He’s very mad about the whole Alexandria thing. Can go on for hours, if you let him.)

Also, he still has long hair, but always wears it tied back in a tight bun when he’s out hunting, pinned very carefully into place and tucked under his hood. Less of a hassle, that way.
