Kuranda Scenic Railway - crossing Stoney Creek Falls bridge, Kuranda Range, Far North Queensland, Australia
flickr
Kuranda Scenic Railway - crossing Stoney Creek Falls bridge, Kuranda Range, Far North Queensland, Australia por Geoff Whalan Por Flickr: The Kuranda Scenic Railway is the name for the railway line that runs from the coastal city of Cairns, Queensland, Australia, over the Great Dividing Range to the town of Kuranda on the Atherton Tableland. The tourist railway snakes its way up through the Macalister Range on the Cairns-to-Kuranda railway line which is no longer used for regular commuter services, but instead operates as a tourist service, operating every day of the year, except Christmas Day. It passes through the suburbs of Stratford, Freshwater (stopping at Freshwater railway station) and Redlynch before reaching Kuranda. The line is used for some freight services and other passenger services, such as The Savannahlander. The railway is 37 km (23 mi) in length. It takes about one hour and 55 minutes to climb one way including the stopoff at Barron Falls.

Welcome to the Jungle
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media

One of the most popular train journeys in Australia is the Indian Pacific, which travels from Sydney to Perth and takes two days and three nights to complete. Along the journey, you will get the chance to witness stunning landscapes, including the Blue Mountains, Nullarbor Plain, and the outback.
Another iconic train journey is The Ghan, which runs from Adelaide to Darwin. The journey takes three days and two nights, passing through the beautiful red earth of the Australian outback, ancient gorges, and rugged mountain ranges.
For shorter journeys, you can explore the scenic coastal route between Melbourne and Sydney via the XPT train or head to Queensland to ride through lush rainforests, waterfalls, and undiscovered beaches on the Kuranda Scenic Railway.
With plenty of options for train travel in Australia, it's no wonder that it's a popular mode of transportation for locals and tourists alike.

Cairns, Australia
Welcome to Cairns, Australia and Dr. Mary Travelbest
In this episode: FAQ is: Dr. Travelbest, What are the seven natural wonders of the world?
Today’s Destination is: Cairns, Australia
Today’s Mistake- Leaving my wallet in a taxi
Travel Advice:  Avoid single supplements when you travel.
FAQ: What are the seven natural wonders of the world?
Answer: One will be talked about on this podcast, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia, which is located by Cairns.
The other six are:
Aurora Borealis (also known as the northern lights)
Harbor of Rio de Janeiro.
Grand Canyon, USA
Mount Everest.
Victoria Falls.
Parícutin, Mexico volcano
  Today’s destination: Cairns, Australia
It’s a city in Queensland, on the tropic north east coast.
The population is about 150,000 plus lots of tourism is happening here.
Some of the world’s most beautiful diving spots are here, on the Great Barrier Reef.
It’s known for agriculture, the port, and now a destination for worldwide travel.
The best time to visit is spring or fall, as the tropical rainforest and climate is lovely nearly anytime.
The people here are genuine and really easy to relate to. They are kind and personal and warm. You can meet them where they are and get to know them with a few nice greetings and respect for their surroundings. When I visited, I met several of the locals and they were all helpful and accommodating.
I flew to Cairns from Brisbane, and stayed for about a week before flying to Alice Springs. The Great Barrier Reef was my destination and I enjoyed the boat trips Snorkeling with the turtles and seeing the many Islands.nI’d like  to name all of the nearby islands, but there too many to name. Some islands are not for humans because they are protected. Here are three main ones, where you can spend the night if you want.
  https://greatbarrierreef.org/islands/best-islands-to-visit-near-cairns/
Fitzroy Island
Green Island
Lizard Island
Besides the ocean, on land, you’ll want to visit the Kuranda Scenic Railway. It’s built into the mountain it seems in some areas. It’s a train right through a dense rainforest, with steep ravines and picturesque waterfalls within the World Heritage listed Barron Gorge National Park. This 2 hour journey gives a view of Barron Falls, 15 hand carved tunnels, 37 bridges and waterfalls you will love. https://www.kuranda.org/listing/kuranda-scenic-railway

Cairns, 1703 km north of Brisbane
the perfect starting point for exploring Far North Queensland. The coastal attractions include the magnificent Great Barrier Reef and, further north, the tropical beaches of the Marlin Coast. Inland you will find the rainforests and plains of the Atherton Tableland and the Gulf savanna. To the north lie the lush Daintree National Park and the varied wet-tropics landscape of Cape York. Are you also excited to buy diary planners, check out a big collection of diary planners with best price here.
The city itself mixes grand colonial architecture, old pubs and high-set Queenslander style homes with modern shopping malls and apartment blocks. In the early days Cairns and Port Douglas were great rivals but in 1924, when
the railway line from Brisbane was terminated at Cairns, Cairns then became the major city in North Queensland. It has grown at a phenomenal rate since 1979, with many new suburbs appearing as if by magic -its population is now 101,000.
The city is a major tourist destination for overseas travellers, especially since the opening of the Cairns International Airport. It is also a popular holiday destination for Australians wanting to experience this part of their own country. Accommodation ranges from the luxury island resorts and five star hotels to rainforest retreats, family units, camping and caravan parks to backpacker hostels. There is a stunning array of things to see and do in Cairns. Explore the deserted mining towns and the small isolated communities that still service the mining and pastoral industries. Take a trip out to the Great Barrier Reef for snorkelling, scuba diving, swimming or just admiring the myriad life forms and fascinating colours of the coral.
The Kuranda Scenic Rail ride up the range west of Cairns goes through tunnels, over bridged ravines and past the Coral Sea at Australia AdventuresBarron Gorge waterfalls, arriving at the station of Kuranda, reputed to be the prettiest railway station in the country. The Kuranda markets are famous for their variety and quality. Also, there is a 7.5 km trip to Kuranda on the Skyrail, the world's longest gondola cableway, which rides above the World Heritage rainforest canopy, with spectacular views of the Coral Sea beaches, cane fields and the mountains.
Other activities include whitewater rafting down the Tully River, a thrilling hot-air balloon flight at sunrise, a 4WD safari through the rugged outback country, or a Tiger Moth or helicopter sightseeing ride over spectacular waterfalls and rainforests. The Australian Woolshed puts on shearing and working sheep dog demonstrations, and Barron Gorge Power Station, an underground hydro-electric power station, is open for tours.
The future of Cairns seems well assured, with the tourist industry continuing to grow, the $100 million Sherga RAAF Base near Weipa currently under construction, the multi-million dollar Tully Millstream hydro-electric scheme and the possibility of the Cape York Space Station project finally becoming a reality. Cairns' main annual festival, 'Fun in the Sun', is held every year in October.

The sugar cane crops are ready for harvest, when the old diesel locomotive rumbles by & sulphur-crested cockatoos disturbed from their feast, wing their way across the autumn sky. Down the track from Freshwater Station—they linger guarding hidden treasure while consuming their fill. A dreamlike journey captures dappled scenes from a moving train; of sylphlike clouds crowning pink-fringed fields, at the base of shimmering, sun-spotted, blue velvet hills.

I rarely use green when I'm coloring, so I figured while I have Xiao brainrot anyway I'd make the most of the opportunity. I dipped into my photos from my semester abroad in Australia in 2018 for some scenery inspiration and painted the background referencing several pictures I took on my phone while on the Kuranda Scenic Railway in the tropical Atherton Tablelands of far north Queensland!
I initially wanted to do a more exciting pose but my inspiration just wasn't having it, and I spent more than enough energy on the background in any case, so this effectively turned out to be an embellished landscape painting. |’D
But hey, I still got to draw Xiao.

I wasn't planning to post a wildlife photo tonight but the kids and I were ecstatic to finally see one of these amazing creatures in the wild today. This is the southern cassowary, the heaviest flightless bird in Australia. Sadly it's listed as endangered in the Wet Tropics region due to a number of factors including habitat loss, vehicle strikes and dog attacks. The southern cassowary plays a vital role in spreading the seeds of rainforest trees. We were lucky enough to see this guy resting just a few metres off the walking track today. We stopped quietly, snapped this picture (with a zoom lens) and then retreated a little distance to give him some space. The encounter capped off an awesome adventure today for the boys and I. We caught the Kuranda Scenic Railway train up the mountain from Cairns to Kuranda, had lunch and then enjoyed a fascinating journey over the rainforest canopy and back down the range with @skyrailcairns. An awesome day out! #exploretnq #thisisqueensland #seeaustralia #southerncassowary #kuranda #theancientrainforest #cairns #rainforest #bird #birdsofaustralia https://instagr.am/p/CGXJ2rsnF1e/

Australia is basically Jurassic Park
Tumblr media
Australia is basically Jurassic Park.  Well, at least it all looks like Jurassic Park and is probably close to as dangerous.  I’m not complaining, it’s exhilirating! I’m just pointing it out…Anyway, Thursday was my last full day in Cairns.  Sad.  So, I decided to have a big day.  I started my trip in the Rainforest and decided to end it int he same way.  I started int he Daintree rainforst and ended in the Wet Tropics Rainforest.  The activities included  Skyrail over the rainforest, Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld, Kuranda Village Markets, hike through the rainforst and historic scenic railway ride back down to Cairns.
Skyrail
The skyrail is absolutely insane!  It is a gondola style rail that goes for over an hour up through the Kuranda Mountain range of the Wet Tropics Rainforest.  It really makes you understand how vast the rainforest here is.  It is also an absolute engineering feat.  It has two stops along the way to see the Barron Gorge waterfall and to have a photo op near the top of the peaks of the rainforest, before climbing even further to where the Kuranda Village is located.  Founded because of the gold rush in the 1880s.  It was a hippie commune in the 1960s and is now a tourist destination, since the building of the skyrail and the reopening of the scenic railway.

Butterfly Sanctuary
When I arrived in Kuranda Village, my first thought was, this is a place that people can live? They can and they do.  Magical!I stopped at the markets and then headed to the Butterfly Sanctuary.  I have to thank my dad for teaching me the all important skill of how to get butterflies to climb on your finger.  Let’s just say, I impressed a lot of guest and got some sweet butterfly selfies out of the deal.  Thanks Dad!

This guy tried to come home with me. Stowaeay.
Birds
Next stop, Bird World.  It should have been a sign that trouble lie ahead when I had to take of my earrings and watch before I could go in.  It is a big open space where birds eat seeds from your hands and land on you and try to steal anything that is not latched doen.  They are very mischievious.  I saw one parrot climb on a womans backpack, unlatch her carobiner and then fly away with it.  Wow!  They also bite, pretty hard.  Once you run out of food for them, they just bite your fingers.  Honestly, they are kind of assholes, but it was worth it for the bird selfies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The only one that didn’t try to bite or rob me.
Tumblr media
Wet Tropics Rainforest
My last order of business was to take a walk through the Rainforest north of the Kuranda River.  For being just off the path from the main trourist area, the RRumum Creek path was beautiful.  It was like I had the forest almost completely to myself  Which was when I realized that Australia is Jurassic Park.  I could actually envision a Velocaraptor soming out and eating me.  “Cleaver girl.”  For all intensive purposes, Cassowaries ARE dinosaurs. I believe they are uncomfortably genetically linked. Seems appropriate. But it was still beautiful and I’ve gotten used to being terrified all the time.  It’s actually a pretty comfortable place to be these days.  Absolutely beautfu place.  I will miss the rainforest alot.

Kuranda Scenic Railway
The Kuranda Scenic railway began construction in the late 1880s as a response to the gold rush and subsequent mining operations.  However, the railway proved to be an engineering nightmare and took over 30 yers to complete..  The Kuranda Rail Station was one of the earliest stations built in Australia.  The railway claimed over 30 lives, directly, and countless more from disease and malnutrition.   The current scenic railway uses the original cars from the 1915 train and a few from the Sunshine express of the 1930s.  The rail was used heavily during World War II to move munitions to the secret bases built in the jungle.  For me, it was just a pleasant afternoon jaunt down the mountain back to Cairns.

Friday I will bid farewell to Australia. It's been amazing. Nextstop, Singapore. This also marks the end of my solo travels. It will be amazing to have Alicua be my tour director, but I'll miss the neverending collection tin of single-serving friends you accumulate travelling alone. They have been wonderful and generous. But on to new adventures. I will post at least once while I'm in Singapore. I'll see you all in Asia!
