““Did you hear?”
“Yeah he moved out of the residents where the pyrokentics stay.”
“They’re all mostly dumb little kids anyways they should have kicked him out ages ago.”
“Shh don’t let management hear you. I heard they hired him on full time as an employee in the power development branch.”
“Are you serious? He’s still going to be here?”
“Worst of all...that greenhorn of a medical officer willingly took him in.”
“Took him in?”
“They’re living together.”
“Does that woman have a death wish? Does she know who she let into her own home?”
“It’s a shame, she would have made a great doctor. Oh well.”
You’d been subjected to it all. From the stares like you were stricken with leprosy. To the intrusive questions any sensible person wouldn’t dare to ask of a practical stranger. The opinions of others fell on your shoulders one by one like bricks as they tried to build a house around you to understand why exactly, out of all the people in the world, you agreed to let The Reaper live with you.
“Everyone shut up. I’ll do it. Kurono can live with me.”
Those words still rang true when you said them. No one clapped or patted your back at the board meeting when you were the only one to step up and offer a welcoming home to the freshly written off third gen. Who could really blame them? He was on thin ice as an asset with the damage he’d caused in multiple rooms during treatment. Just the money alone spent to contain his tephrosis could have funded something else or extended a lease on something in any of the multitude of fingers Haijima had in the Tokyo Empire’s daily life. For what should have been a begging, thankful man as an outcome. Only made a surly, hard to work with, intimidating bully of a man who no one wanted to shoulder the burden up.
So in reality, you were the first one to place the very first brick on your shoulders. Bearing the weight of your decision you made all on your own. Even without a pay raise.
Like most hyped up things, they’d slowly become yesterday's news.
The questions, intrusive and rude, trickled down to a near stop after a while. A new arrangement becoming old news to everyone. Only employees in their first week on the job would yank you aside to ask in a hushed voice if you were ok after their first encounters with The Reaper. To which you’d laugh it off in the end. At first it would prickle your nerves and leave a sour taste in your mouth at the audacity from people who didn’t even know your first name yet alone anything about you or him. Now though you only chuckled in their face and let the concerned newbie know what you two had planned for dinner and that you’d let them know tomorrow if the meal sat well with you or not. No one thought it was as funny as you did. Still thought they insisted on asking so you never gave them the answer they were looking for.
Because it simply wasn’t there. Living with Kurono just; really wasn’t that different from living alone. For the better part of the adjustment period that was. You two went to the same place to work. He wasn’t a bad cook so you split kitchen duties down the middle. Clean and tidy in both personal and shared spaces so chores were never an issue. Already equipped with the tools to talk to him because of treatment as well as being the only coworker to tread those waters. Going from work to home wasn’t much of a change. The only thing different wasn’t the leery stares you got from overly concerned strangers who didn’t know the first thing about either of you two. Their fear was rooted in what you could only excuse as a natural instinct. Maybe yours had been dulled the longer you were around him. Leaving you perhaps vulnerable but to what you weren’t exactly sure. Kurono hardly expended more energy than an average house cat on a particularly busy day. That lull in complacency is probably why the first time he woke you up at night, you weren’t that startled to see his familiar set of orange eyes on you.
“...What- Yuichiro- What- What time is it?” You fished for your phone when absolutely no light was trickling in from your curtains. And were even more surprised to see it was barely past midnight. Asleep just long enough to be disoriented when there was a soft wrap of knuckles on the door. He’d succeeded in waking you up but when you rubbed your face squinting Kurono remained motionless in the doorway, “Is something wrong? Did I forget to turn something off?”
This was probably the moment all your coworkers tried to warn you about over the past few months. How most of them would be in hysterics if The Reaper had stood in their doorway with minimal backlighting to illuminate his figure in the doorway. At that very moment all you could do was think you left rice in the rice cooker or the stove on after meal prep.
“Can’t sleep.” Kurono finally voiced.
Not what you expected to hear and it dragged you from your tired haze more than if he’d said the stove was on fire.
“What?” You rubbed at your face unsure you heard him correctly.
“Can’t sleep.” He repeated himself without a hint of inflection to his voice.
Finally sitting up in bed you looked around the dark room hardly able to the outlines of your own belongings. Yet you could see enough of him to make out that same complacent expression he always looked at you with. Rightfully tired you didn’t think much of what came out of your mouth next.
“...I guess, you can come lay down?” You offered as you padded the empty side of your bed. Normally untouched and had been since you bought it.
Silent as he came over to the opposing side of your bed. You rolled the covers down and looked up at him only half aware of what was going on. Wanting nothing more than to get back to sleep as soon as possible. So the solution in the dead of night to let him sleep in your bed seemed like a no brainer.
And as the weight of another person finally on the other side made your frame creak with a tiny groan. That was the first time you’d let him sleep in your bed. Your back to well, his side, you weren’t really sure as he hardly moved after getting in bed next to you. And you had no idea what position he slept in honestly. Awake before your alarm for the following morning went off. That was the first time he asked to sleep in your bed with you but by far wasn’t the last.
See because the very next night it was the same thing. Confusing you more than making you cranky since this time he’d made his way into your room before midnight at least. Leaving you sure he hadn’t even attempted to sleep in his own bed before telling you that he couldn’t sleep. Perhaps taking it as a kindness to not wake you up like the night before. Kurono’s odd ability to be intrusive in the least rude ways with you had you looking at him weird when he made that statement again. Though after the night before you really couldn’t complain as he hadn’t kept you up and you’d slept like a rock.
So again, rolling down the covers to the other side of your bed, you invited him in. Watched even as he settled down beside you. Legs tucked under the covers neither of you had pulled up yet. Very aware of the sleepwear you both would wear as more often than not neither of you were in a rush to get dressed on weekends. So when you smiled at him and let him know you were going to turn off the light. Kurono silently looked down at your lap until the click of the lamp. Followed by the shuffle of bodies in bed. One was yours and the other his. You were in a strange way glad he didn’t wake you up this time. So when the threat of sleep was on the verge of taking you over. You thought nothing of it when you felt a familiar hand lay itself against the small of your back. Just the faintest touch when he’d extend his fingers to loop them in the fabric of your shirt. Not infringing on the way you slept or anything. Just the subtle notice that told you he was right there with you. It was strangely comforting but before you knew it you woke up the next morning to him out of bed and the covers pulled up. Once again this wouldn’t be the last time he asked to sleep in bed with you.
The third night and you pulled the covers down to the other side of the bed without even thinking about it. In fact you’d stopped to look at it weirdly as you’d never done it before. But when you looked up from the side of the bed previously untouched, there he was standing in your doorway like the previous nights.
“Can’t sleep?” You asked with a bit of a smile when you came back around to your side of the bed.
Lips set in a stern line Kurono looked down, “...if you don’t mind.”
Getting into the well worn groove of your side of the bed just too look up at him you kept smiling, “I don’t mind at all.”
Because the fact of the matter was you didn’t. You also hadn’t given it much thought as someone looking in might have found this odd and inappropriate. But that seemed as rich of an opinion as those coworkers who swore you’d be dead by the end of the week if you let him move in with you. You weren’t dead. And honestly you liked the comfort of a body next to you. Even if it were just his knuckles brushing your back in the middle of the night. It felt nice to be close.
Something was different tonight though. The first night Kurono had woken you up. The second night you were already in bed. But this third time you’d seen each other getting into bed before the lights were even off. So now in the darkness it felt off in a way you couldn’t quit pin. And as you stared off at the wall where you always laid at the edge of your bed. You couldn’t quite fall asleep the same as you had previously. On a whim suddenly rolling over to face the middle of the bed.
Surprised to see him not on his back or facing the other way. Kurono had rolled onto his side before you even noticed it. Leaving the two of you facing nose to nose on separate pillows to stare at each other.
“...can’t sleep?” You asked in a hush whisper between the two of you.
His expression, though hard to see in the dark, looked a little pensive as he laid there with his hand tucked up under his cheek, “I can leave if you can’t sleep.”
The immediate threat of him leaving made you instinctively reach out. Grabbing onto the bit of corner pillow case he wasn’t lying on. It took you a second to realize what you’d just done as well as glancing at your hand so close to his face, “I...No, stay.”
Of course he complied by staying utterly still. Even after months of living here Kurono kept referring to it as your place. Your apartment only. Not yet once vocalizing that he saw it as his home as well. Even as he laid in bed only a few inches away from you in the under lit room.
“...are you doing ok here?” You asked as too much time had passed and neither of you seemed close to falling asleep, “I mean...in the apartment. Here with me. Are you adjusting ok?”
While most of his answers always tended to be curt, to the point and blunt. There were moments like these that you could see him take his time to figure out the way he wished to word them. It was seconds like these you wished your coworkers saw more of. These times where he truly curated his answer based on how he felt and not just by the gut reaction of those around him.
“...It’s nice here.” Kurono muttered, “In your apartment. I like the extra space and no alarms going off randomly.”
Rubbing the cool fabric of his pillow case between your thumb and forefinger you looked at your action with such intensity you nearly zoned out for a moment, “This is your place too you know? It’s your home not just...not just another holding cell. I- I want you to like it here.”
His orange eyes shifted up to your face. The one thing you could always see in the dark. Where you should have been uneasy to look a snake in the eyes in such a dark room. They brought you comfort that couldn’t be explained even if you had all the words in the world to do so. No one would understand this. And those who heard your thoughts would call you crazy.
“I do like it here.” Kurono spoke frankly.
Such a broad term and you needed more reassurance you were doing the right thing, “In the apartment? In your room? What part do you like?”
“I like it here.” He said again, this time with the slightest gesture of his gaze that quickly tipped you off that he meant your room.
“Oh. Oh-” You laughed a little under your breath at the misunderstanding and stopped rubbing the pillow case so close to his cheek, “You can have this room, we can switch this weekend if you’d like.”
“It’s not the room.” Kurono cut in to clarify. He stirred a confused look from you and he could be heard sighing softly in the dark room even if you couldn’t really see anything, “I meant the bed. I like being here...with you.”
Then it dawned on you. From the very moment you met him. Though through an observation glass as thick as your fist. You two, hadn’t really spent a lot of time apart. Why else would you have offered to let him stay with you if not for the fact most of your day was spent together anyways? It seemed so natural that amidst the change in scenery and paperwork that went with it, you hadn’t thought about the fact he just came to live with you because he wanted to.
“Yuichiro?” You whispered across the small gap between the two of you.
He didn’t say anything but you felt and saw his gaze on you in the small space you had between each other.
“...can I hold you?” You asked, hardly sure you said it loud enough to hear in the room. Yet at the same time it made your ears ring it felt like the loudest thing you’d ever said in your life.
Static silence. Certainly a wrong move that would result in your coworkers being correct about him. Over your dead body they’d say they told you so. As you held your breath concerned with what you’d just said. All of it was released when Kurono leaned forward in the cramped space of your bed.
Forehead to your lips when he buried his face into the ratty old t-shirt you chose to wear every night. Quickly to not pass this up you engulfed him in your arms when you could. Arms tucked under his neck and draped over his shoulder to engulf all of him. You buried your nose into his mop of straight, thick black hair and moved your body all that much closer to the side of the bed you never laid on. The Reaper in your arms as his face felt a million times warmer than any blankets you could put on yourself. What happened after that was simply the quickest you’d ever fallen asleep. One second you were curling your arms to adjust his head into the crook of them. The next you woke up to bright lights threatening your blinds and the same mop of black hair still tucked into your chest as when you’d fallen asleep hours before.
So as the questions still came in like stragglers late to class. Asking if you were ok or if you were being compensated for living with the awful Reaper who still plagued Hiajima. You learned to laugh them off. Making everyone who only said they were concerned about your safety uncomfortable. Good. Because really they had no say in anything that you chose to do. And you liked it that way. Just like you liked the way Kurono came to ask if he could sleep in bed with you. Because in just three days you were sleeping better than you’d ever had in your entire life.
Now you would wake up with an arm cinched tight around your side and his face buried in the back of your neck with his knees pressed to the back of yours. As close as he could possibly get nightly. Waking up like this every morning made you smile. And made you so happy that he’d asked to come sleep in your bed all those years ago.

Some interesting revelations came out of a conversation with @mal-the-konohoe @mortyvongola2-0 and @justmyownreality last night. Jmor asked if Masa and Kurono were with anyone else besides Gaara and Kankurō (and Itachi in Kuro’s case), who would they be with? The conclusion was the wildest ship that I had never even considered EVER before.
Your girl lives alone, is sick, and has no plans for the day. So prepare yourself for a surprise twist ship that will make your heart flutter.

_____________________________________________________________
5 years...
It’s been 5 years since you discovered you have a supernatural ability in your hometown of Musutafu, Japan. A city where you are surrounded by hundreds of thousands of people with extraordinary abilities that are unique to their own. In this universe, these powers were known as…
                                                       … Quirks.
Throughout those years, you worked hard to get your Quirk to its full potential, lightly using it on a daily basis to better understand what you're truly capable of. You didn’t quite recognize it at first, but your earliest recollection of developing your Quirk was masked by your survival instincts that kicked in due to a robbery at a Convenience store you had passed through. Before the crime had happened, you had a subtle low pitch ringing in your ears, and hummed right up to the point a ragged man walked in through the front doors. You thought nothing of it at first, until the man had the clerk at gunpoint.
After this moment, you began to notice a consistency between the conveniently timed low pitched ringing, and any sort of danger near you, and took heed of its warning. As the year progressed, so did your Quirk. Later into that same year, you were startled to hear voices within your head, only to realize that these voices weren't from some sort of split-personality, but were from the people around you; A new development in your Quirk that was allowing you to hear the thoughts of those around you, without the consent  of the people near you.
In the following year, you practiced your Quirk day by day, gradually expanding the reach of your psychic ability. With enough focus, you soon found that you could also see into people’s memories and even watch their dreams, potentially exposing their deepest, darkest secrets. And only after a short amount of time, you then enhanced your Quirk to the point that you could alter a person’s memories, making them believe whatever you would have wanted them too.
And soon, you were able to give your Quirk its very own name:
                                               Mind Invasion.
Seeing how your Quirk had developed throughout the years, you knew it would be dangerous to register it with the government, taking into consideration the rise of crime and rumors of the infamous All for One returning. With this in mind, you decided it would keep you safer to be listed as “Quirkless” in the records, and prevent any harm to yourself.
*****   *****   *****   *****   *****   *****   *****   *****   *****    *****
                        ~~Present Day~~
On a random weekday just after midnight, you waited until the latest hour to explore the half asleep city to practice more mind reading and memory alteration. The emptying streets made it easier for you to focus on your Quirk with little distractions. However, tonight was a special night, and the perfect opportunity to truly test your abilities in action. Rumor had it that an old underground gang has resurfaced, and their new leader has been spotted in a local area trying to recruit more members.
Their gang was called the Shei Hassaikai, a new image of the Yakuza, and every low-level thug and small-time criminal would kill to be recruited by the legendary gang. Reports had flooded in that they had been gathering near the wet markets just downtown, making deals in the back alleys out of sight. And with big names such as theirs, you had a feeling that it would become popular with some interesting characters in the streets. This made it sound like the perfect place to see how far you could take your Quirk, but you knew you had to be careful and blend in with the local crowd.
Once the time felt right, you made your way towards the more crowded sections of the market, hoping to catch any sort of action. As you got deeper into the stalls and stands, you could feel the soft hum of a low pitched sound coming to ring in your ears. Trying to determine the location that you're being warned of, you could hear the low ringing become more intense as you came closer to an ally in between two stalls.
As you followed your instinct, you navigated the complex pathways behind the buildings until you came up to a dark and narrow alleyway, with the soft glow of a street light shining just around the corner. Just as you tread in the dark, you carefully approach the edge of the building, hugging your back against the wall, trying to get a good peak around the corner without being noticed. You could see a small space that led to a dead end, and three figures in total: Two thugs, and one regular man.
Thug 1: “Looks like you were short on your payment last week. And the boss ain’t too happy with the lousy amount you send us. Tell me…Where’s the rest of it?”
Victim, stuttering: “B-business has been t-tough.. I.. I don’t have the r-rest of it-”
                                               *PUNCH*
*Thug 2 lands a heavy blow to the man, causing him to cough heavily*
I wonder… as you thought to yourself.
You tried to focus on the first thug that was doing most of the talking, and wanted to try to alter his memory of the incomplete payment, but the angle you were at and the rush from your heart beat made it difficult to concentrate. And the only thought left was to try and get a better view of him, and to get closer. You browsed your surroundings for a better location, but there was no other option than to peer around the corner. While you were trying to get a better view, your hand slipped from the edge of the wall as you leaned in a bit too far and you stumbled into plain sight of the thugs, catching their attention.
                                                                            I’m screwed…
          “HEY!”
“What are you doin’ sneakin’ ‘round here?!”
With the thugs’ attention on you, the victim saw his window of opportunity to make a run for it.
      “H-Hey! You get-....”
                        RRRRRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
                                                                 “DAMMIT!”
The first thug threw his hands in a fit before turning to you with a malicious glare. You could feel the low hum in your ear growing louder as the seconds passed. “I’m gonna kill you for interfering with us…” he growled. As you barely had a chance to react, his partner lunged right at you with his arm cocked back ready to swing. You ducked as fast as you could, feeling the force of air from his swing graze the top of your head before his fist landed into the brick wall. The contact from his powerful blow echoed on the walls, as a cloud of dust exploded from the inflicted area.
With the cover of the dust from the impact, you used it to escape from the dead end and maneuvered through the complex pathways of the back alleys. You knew that your only chance of safety was to make your way to a public area, and to the nearest precinct for local law enforcement, but you didn’t pay attention to which direction you originally came from. Your heart was racing, and each dim light you passed under made it difficult to make out the objects in front of you, and their light shined a little less with each step.
As you descended further into darkness, you could feel the presence of the two thugs disappear from behind, but the low ringing sound still resonated in your ears. Although no one was in sight, you didn’t slow down as you felt uncertain of your own senses. So you took a brief glance behind you, only to see the pitch black alley. Even though no one was in sight, you still had to dodge obstacles ahead, so you turned to look forward and
                                               *SLAM*
With the momentum of your body bouncing off whatever you ran into, you landed heavily on the ground with a growing ache on your forehead from the impact. While you gathered yourself, you firmly gasped your head in an effort to comfort the pain; Your hands and rear throbbed from the landing. But before you could collect yourself, you became overwhelmed with an intense sensation through your body. The weight of the air around you grew heavy as your body was held down from a tingling sense.
You sat there, frozen with fear, hesitant to look up at the persons in front of you. As your eyes made their way up, you could see a man at your feet, dressed in a long white cloak, hooded, and covering almost all of his body. Peeking out from his hood was a burgundy plague doctor’s mask lined with gold stitching, and silver hair tipped with pointed arrows. But behind him were two sinister gold eyes, glowing in the darkness. As your eyes locked with them, you could feel your breath escaping your lips, taken by the fear they put into your body.
A faulty street light flickered from behind, until it finally stayed lit, casting a soft glow over his figure. It made it difficult to make out specific details of his appearance, however, he slowly walked in your direction, giving you a better view. A green bomber jacked with purple fur lining the collar rested on his shoulders. And underneath wore a black dress shirt and pants, with a clean white tie. As he walked closer to you, you could see the street light reflect off the gold plating of his own plague doctor’s mask. Although it was burgundy like the other, it only covered the lower half of his face, allowing you full view of his glistening gold eyes. His short, feathered brown hair was exposed, and three gold stud earrings for each lobe.
      It’s… Him…
The rumored leader of the Shei Hassaikai…
                                             …Overhaul…
You sat there paralyzed. A numbness creeping throughout your body as your eyes filled with fear. You knew that there would be danger coming to a place like this, but never did you think you would actually come into contact with a Yakuza.
“Y’know…” grunted his henchman, “It’s rude to bump into someone and not apologize…”
Although you heard his voice, you didn’t have the strength to respond under the immense pressure of his sinister presence. As you stared at him longer though, you could feel his narrow eyes giving off a seemingly…  soft look. They were mesmerizing, and the longer you looked, the easier it was for him to lure you in. Lost in his golden eyes, you accidentally activated your Quirk and could hear his deep voice echo in your head.
Why is she staring at me?...
                                                 I hate when people stare…
Your facial expression changed instantly once you realized what you were doing, and you turned your head to avoid his glance, as if you were a dog that had just been scolded. But Overhaul noticed your reaction, and became interested in your behavior as he looked down on you.
“You could hear what I was thinking… couldn’t you” he asked.
As you snapped your head back in his direction, your eyes met with his a second time, still barely able to let any words slip past your lips. Shit.. You knew that the situation was already bad, but having him of all people know what your quirk is would prove dangerous. It would be best to wait and see how to play it out… but you couldn’t wait long. Annoyed with how long he’s had to wait, he walks right up to your feet before crouching down to eye level with you, never breaking eye contact.
“Did you hear what I said?”
Your body began to temple in fear, as you struggled to make out any words. “I.. I’m sorry”, you stuttered, “I didn’t mean too..” Overhaul’s expression never changed, but you could sense a shift in the air. Although Overhaul was showing his interest in you, his henchman from behind seemed a bit stand-offish.
So you can hear my thoughts… Overhaul’s voice said in your head.
  Interesting…
You could prove useful to me then…
                                      Shit..
                                                              He knows..
Out of nervous behavior, you took a gulp as you sat there helpless. As your eyes broke contact, Overhaul stood up and slowly tread around you, observing every inch of you. As you stared off into the alley in front of you, you could see his henchman growing uneasy, removing his hands from his pockets.
“Tell me,” said Overhaul, “what else can your quirk do?”
You still sat there speechless, trying to think of what to do, or even say.
Do I tell him everything, and pray I stay alive?
Should I be crazy and try to alter his memory real quick?
Or do I keep quiet and hope he just leaves me be?
As Overhaul continued to circle you, he came to a stop in front of you again, and you could still feel his golden eyes piercing through you. Gracefully, you looked back up at him, doe eyed and all, admiring his appearance. For a big-time baddy, his figure and composure was sure alluring.
Growing impatient with your response yet again, Overhaul reached his hand out to you, and his gloved fingers gently, but firmly, grasped your jaw, softly squeezing your cheeks to assert his dominance.
Don’t make me kill you…
As you heard his voice in your head again. You could feel him gently pull your head to him, allowing your neck to slightly stretch as your eyes locked with his again. You were hesitant to answer him, since you weren’t entirely sure what his true intentions were. But you heard his voice in your head once more.
I asked you ‘what else can your Quirk do’...
His eyes were so persuasive, and you weren’t sure of what would happen. But you realized the low hum from earlier had disappeared.
Am I safe now? How?
Either way, it would be smart for now to explain, and at least see how things play out. He may let you live after all… He released his grip from your jaw to allow you to speak freely…
“I… I call it Mind Invasion…” you said softly, keeping eye contact with him as he stared back down at you. “I can hear a person’s thoughts without their consent… no matter how much they try, I can always hear or see what they’re feeling…” Overhaul seemed intrigued, and wanting more than what you were giving him. He knew there was more to it based on your body language, and he wasn’t going to let you keep it from him.
Keep going… he asked in your head.
“If I have a target, and can focus on them enough, I can see into that person’s memories if I wanted to… and learn everything I want to without them knowing.” Once you finished, his hooded henchman scoffed in disbelief. “Enough Kurono,” said Overhaul, as he looked back at him. “Let her prove it.” His golden eyes looked back to lock onto yours again, eager to see what you present before him. He signaled for his henchman, Kurono, to come closer to you.
“I want you to show me what you see from his memories,” gestured Overhaul, “And then we can decide if you’re worth keeping alive or not.”
You looked up at Kurono, searching for his eyes through the glass covers on his face. As you took a deep breath, you delved into the pool of memories circling inside his head. As you locked onto one, you began to describe the scene that played out before you. “I see… a balcony,” you said. “And it’s overlooking a part of the city at night.” Kurono looked to Overhaul in a cautious manner, reminiscing in the most re-lived memory in his head.
“I can see you [Overhaul] with a black face mask and a black dress shirt with the top buttons undone, and you leaning on the railing with your arms, and your fingers intertwined.” Overhaul continued to stare at you, with his brows slightly raised. What else? You could hear him say in your head. “He [Kurono] stands behind you, watching you [Overhaul] hang your head in frustration… you two are talking about how ‘the old man doesn’t understand something’...”
As you finished, you could see Overhaul nodding his head to Kurono before turning away to walk into the shadows again. “That’s enough for now.” Overhaul said, sounding pleased with what he’s learned. “ I think you’ll be of great use to us… Kurono.” As Overhaul disappeared, Kurono lowered his hood to reveal his silver arrow-tipped hair with short and long pieces.
Naturally, you raised your arm up to try and defend yourself from what would happen next, but instead gave him the upper hand. A short piece of his hair stretched out towards you, piercing your arm. As you stared at him, your body became heavy, and your movements slowed down tremendously. What.. is this? You tried your best to move away from him, but your limbs moved at the speed of a snail.
Watching you struggle, Kurono made his way just to the side of you with his arm raised to strike. “Sorry for this,” he said. “I’ll try to be gentle.” As soon as those words left his lips, he swung the narrow edge of his hand to the back of your neck, knocking you out. Even though it was slow, you could feel his arms embrace your limp body, as he carried you into the darkness.

─Happy birthday to the 2d soulmate and my irl soulmate’s twin ♡
Looking down his nose, his eye's narrowed in their average serpentine manner like they always did.
"And it's paid for?"
Though you sighed it didn’t stop you from smiling even if his first response was to be difficult as always. So with robust gusto you puffed your chest out with triumph because this plan was air tight even by his standards, "Yep, courtesy of my paid sick time even. You get paid today and I have it all planned."
Kurono didn’t let up on his judgmental squint. After all he had just literally opened his bedroom door to see you standing outside it ready to burst for lord knew what exact reason. And he hadn’t even made it over the threshold of his own room before you sprung this on him, “....so, why, exactly?”
“Because it’s your birthday!” You explained far too chipper for this early in the morning.
He leaned to the side to look past you into the empty apartment. Causing you to frown a little and Kurono noticed you dip in morale at his odder than normal stare, “It is, yes. But again, why?”
Glancing over your shoulder towards the apartment’s empty kitchen you then looked back at him with a returning confused scowl, “Because it’s your birthday and I want it to be special. Have you literally ever done anything for your birthday?”
His mostly hair covered brows knitted together in what was only a brief dive in his memories just for Kurono to turn up with another complacent shrug, “No. I work.”
“Ok but-” You were grabbing at anything to get him riled up like you were, “How about before Haijima. It’s not like you hatched from an egg in the middle of the street or something.”
Kurono’s face remained unmoving without an ounce of denying or affirming your statement.
“Never mind never mind-” You waved your hands briskly in front of you to discontinue that thought entirely. Once more proudly puffing out your chest and clearing your throat, “Yuichiro Kurono, I have prepared a packed day to celebrate your birthday.” Extending your hand out you offered it to him with a smile, “Will you allow me to celebrate your birthday with you?”
Warmth of his yellow and orange irises turning into tiny little slits once more as he squinted at you. Kurono was unbudging even after you offered your hand, “...is it expensive?”
Quickly you shook your head and jutted your open palm up towards him again with insistence and excitement, “I paid for it all.”
“But...why exactly?”
“I swear to god Yuichiro-” You grabbed his hand and yanked the suited man towards you, “It’s your birthday, let me make it special for you since we live together.”
He looked down at your hand grasping his. He wouldn’t have to make breakfast this morning. Wouldn’t need to pack his lunch for his too short of a lunchbreak. No need to stand on public transport to and from Haijima. Wouldn’t need to clock in for an entire day but he’d get a paycheck for it? While not having to spend a cent all day long? All while getting drug around the unknown by you? Kurono couldn’t fathom a better way to spend his birthday. And certainly never found the words all day either to tell you how this might be his best birthday yet.
Every detail of every second of the day was filled. While also being explained as you went. Ok well more like you explained it all to him in gibberish over breakfast at one of his favorite restaurant. One you both frequented together on the weekends so when you sprung that as the first stop on the birthday tour, he couldn’t help but be a little tickled with it. Even if he sipped his coffee as deadpan as any other day.
Over his favorite meal of overly saturated pancakes with three pads of butter and the addition of his favorite omurice he said he couldn’t finish but used his pancake to wipe up the last bit of ketchup. Kurono listened intently as you told him about the bookstore trip that was a subway ride away that had an extensive kids book collection, followed up the lunch spot you’d both eaten at before and had some of his favorite curry that they always cooked way past squishy every time, to then go to a movie he was surprised you recalled him wanting to see and a stop by the store he always wanted to get his button down shirts from but never did. All to be finished off with a dinner reservation that a bunch of people had talked about in the breakroom but Kurono never thought about actually eating at.
And like you had promised he didn’t have to think, pay or plan for anything.
At the bookstore he found an enormous encyclopedia of nursery rhythms that you snatched up to buy after watching him sit for almost an hour scouring through it. Even insisting the cashier gift wrap it when they asked if it was a present. Kurono was about to deny a birthday to save the cringe of being told happy birthday as an adult but you covered him and said it was for someone special. To which the cashier dropped it and Kurono let out a little held in breath. Only looking over at you to see you wink at him and thank the cashier when you both left.
Lunch was just as good there as he remembered when you went a few months ago. In fact he asked if you’d asked them to cook the curry longer than normal because it was perfect. Still you shrugged nonchalantly and insisted maybe they just knew it was his birthday. Never giving him a straight answer. But also not sure where he was putting it all after the breakfast you’d both had. Didn’t matter though because once again Kurono was content and full without realizing the day wasn’t even over yet.
The clothing store, that you once again bought the thing’s he was looking at. Even paying for them beforehand so he could wear the nicely pressed button down to the movies. Perfection even following to the theater when you got a seat exactly where he liked. No one around you both. Kurono finding himself stealing glances at you every so often throughout the movie. He didn’t know why. But as dinner came onto the agenda he just couldn’t stop looking at you.
Thankfully you never noticed.
Dinner at a place you needed a reservation at felt as fancy as it was. Kurono indulged his palette once more with an amazing meal. In a shirt he didn’t buy but looked unreasonably good on him when it wasn’t wrinkled. And as he sat quietly eating his dinner like he’d mostly been silent throughout the day. He noticed upon the dozen or so glances your way that something seemed off.
It wasn’t until the two of you returned to the apartment did something feel off. Kurono off load his clothing as well as the still neatly wrapped book. Looking back to see you’d gone to the kitchen without a word. After he’d set his things down the man followed you to see you frowning. All he could do was return you look with a somewhat slight frown of his own.
“...did you have fun today?” You asked almost tentatively.
“What?” Kurono scowled over at you, “What kind of question is that?”
“You just-” It was difficult to word and it showed on your face until the words made their way forward, “You were quiet. More than normal. I just- I wanted to make your birthday special.” You broke a little bit of a self deprecating smile and looked over at him, “I realize now you probably didn’t want a day where I drug you around the Tokyo Empire and just asked what you wanted to do.”
Kurono took a step forward. Closing the little bit of a gap there was between the two of you. He did look so good in his new shirt. That you were thankful he got at least.
“You didn’t ask me what I wanted to do for my birthday.” Kurono bluntly said.
Groaning you drug your palms down your face shaking your head with your stupid move of todays plan, “God damn it, it was too much, wasn’t it? I’m so sorry Yuichiro I just- I wanted to make up for something I guess and-”
“And all I wanted to do for my birthday,” Kurono rudely interrupted you. Forcing you to shut up and look over at him surprised, “All I wanted, was to spend it with you.” He shifted a little on his feet looking down at them without much of a trace of emotion on his face or in his words, “We could have done that at work or out like we did or...even just here at home.” Kurono finally looked up at you with the most relaxed you’d seen his face all day as he took a moment to stare at you longer than he had all day long, “...With you is all I really cared about.”
Fighting the twitch of a smile on your lips you did so by offering your hand out to him like you had early this morning before everything happened. And like before Kurono scrutinized your gesture with a glare. But this time he laid his pale hand in your palm and watched as you spread your fingers between his and laced them all together.
Stepping to him you lightly slung your arm around his shoulders. Kurono taking the very brash hint to put his other arm around your waist. The two of you looking at one another as you smiled enough for the both of you.
“There’s no music.” Kurono parted the obvious fact onto you.
“I could sing you happy birthday?” You offered with a shit eating grin plastered on your face paired with a cocked eyebrow.
“Please don’t.”
Leaning into him to rest your cheek against his shoulder the two of you began slow dancing in the middle of the kitchen. The click of his work shoes in the small apartment. Your bare feet keeping out from under his steps as you lead. Both of you lazily following the ingrained steps of a mock waltzs as Kurono rested his cheek against the top of your head. Lost for a moment as the quiet alone time presented itself as the best gift you could have given him.
“Yuichiro-” You mumbled against his shirt as you squeezed his arm and stepped forward with the rotation of the dance.
“Yeah?” Kurono said softly above you.
“Happy birthday.”
He realized for the first time today he couldn’t see you. Kurono looking out at the rest of the kitchen where you both spent so much time together. And after an entire day together he still couldn’t have felt more content to be anywhere else. Unable to see you he let the faintest smile curl at the corner of his cheek. Kurono squeezed your hand and tightened his arm around your waist ever so slightly to hold you that much closer to him.
“Thank you...for my new favorite birthday.”
