The Hazbin Hotel fandom’s issue with accepting aromanticism and asexuality
Now that it is officially Aromantic Spectrum Awareness Week, I want to talk about this!
I find that, as an aroace myself, I am constantly grasping at good representation and coming up empty— it usually ends up in one of two ways.
One: the character is portrayed as emotionless, cold, and robotic in nature. It’s the question aromantic and/or asexual people are often asked: “Are you heartless?” The answer is no, of course, but general media makes it out to be the opposite.
Or two: Their lack of attraction is seen as something to “fix” because they “haven’t found the right one yet”, and they end up with a partner as a “happy ending”.
It frustrates me greatly because of how little people actually see aromanticism or asexuality as a true part of the LGBTQIA+ community.
So when I watched Hazbin Hotel, and I found out about Alastor being aroace, I was over the moon. I was on cloud nine. I also saw how his voice actor has looked up the term as an attempt to learn about aroaces, which makes me OVERJOYED?? Amir is truly a blessing, and I love that he’s proud to embody a character that’s part of our community. It’s so beautiful to finally have a proper character, a fan favorite at that, who just so happens to be aroace— and that’s another thing I love about this.
It’s never explicitly stated in the show (though it is stated in interviews), but it’s rather clear when you’re watching, isn’t it? Alastor’s aversion to any sort of sexual advancement, coupled with Rosie’s blatant “I know you’re an ace in the hole” comment sort of spell out his asexuality pretty clearly, as well as what side of the spectrum he falls upon. In addition, his Valentine’s day card was strictly platonic, which caters to his aromantic side. It feels so validating to finally be represented, to finally have a character in media who shares the same lack of interest in romance and sex as I do.
When I entered the fandom to look for more content, I kind of expected to see the same respect for Alastor’s orientation there too. But that… wasn’t the case? I am fully aware that aromanticism and asexuality are both spectrums— of course, aromantic and/or asexual people can enter those kinds of relationships. I’m not denying that and they belong in the community as much as anyone else on the spectrum.
But, the more I see the same line again and again and again, the more it feels like an excuse to just ship what you want.
Usually I don’t mind shipping? I’m often a firm believer in people shipping what they like as long as it’s harmless and they don’t go crazy over it. I also know for a fact that Viv doesn’t have a problem with people shipping her characters. They are fictional, after all.
But in this case, people are ignoring the very thing that makes Alastor a part of the aroace community! People are ignoring his lack of romantic or sexual attraction!
Is this not the same as changing a gay character’s orientation to suit a straight ship? If not, how so? I’m told that we are a part of this community, so why aren’t we being treated like it? Why is it so hard to accept the people on the end of the spectrum who aren’t interested?
Something I’ve been noticing throughout my life is that society has not exactly progressed very much on the idea of accepting asexual or aromantic identities. Maybe we have, a little, since the old days— but hell, people in “the old days”, which in truth wasn’t very long ago, believed that asexuality was a medical condition to be “fixed” by taking the right medication or having sex. That’s a pretty low bar to clear. And on the romance side, you’re seen as a “late bloomer” or “boring” if you don’t express interest. These days, being friends with someone is treated like a gateway to them possibly becoming a lover. Not getting married, not going on dates, not wanting a partner— it’s all treated like a crime when it’s not.
Maybe I’m selfish, or sensitive, or I’m butthurt over nothing, or I’m making it all about me. Maybe I’m gatekeeping or whatever the term is. But please, please, please, I just want an aroace character like me who simply is not interested in sex or romance.
And I want fandom to respect that. I admire the creations that fans make— the art, the animatics, the writing and the character analysis. And I want people to keep creating because creation is indeed a beautiful thing.
But I really would like people to treat aroace identities like they’re important. Like it’s more than just a spectrum to get wiggle room to wrangle in another ship.

hey friendly reminder to the entire TMA fandom that jonathan sims, the archivist, is asexual. he does not have sex with anyone. this is canon and stated in the show. please don’t erase that aspect of his character. please don’t erase asexuality representation.

in light of all the recent and incredibly disheartening discourse across my dash regarding aro and/or ace men, I raise all of you the question:
who are you to decide who is queer and who isn't? who are you to dictate who is "queer enough" for the community?
either educate yourself on identities you may not fully understand or shut the fuck up and mind your own fucking business.
your identity is not more important nor is it more queer than someone else's. your opinion on how someone else identifies and what their label means is not more important than the person who uses that label.
you do not get to decide who is welcome in the community and who isn't. check yourself.

Probably the most salient moments of our story Think of Me, from DC Pride 2022, written, drawn and coloured by us, lettered by the amazing Frank Cvetkovic.
It meant a huge deal to us when @whatthe-shea asked us to be the ones to bring Connor Hawke out of the closet as asexual. We’re both asexual ourselves, so having the chance to broaden representation in superhero comics was absolutely great.
The monologue was really important to us; not only was the letter format our way of referencing Connor’s old habits of writing letters to his mom from his adventures, but it was also the most elegant way to thread a bunch of different needles in terms of establishing Connor’s current continuity, bring him out of the closet, and try to explain at least one of the ways being asexual can feel in an allosexual society to help readers who might have little experience with asexuality feel like they could relate a bit more.

DC should stop being cowards and let Batman be interested in men already! We already know that Catwoman likes pussy, but you're really going to tell me that this billionaire isn't a bi-llionaire!???
Also while I'm here, you can't tell me that Two-Face doesn't swing at least two ways.

If I am proud to be queer and the people around me know it, then I hope it inspires someone else to be proud to be queer. Sometimes we just need some help to believe in ourselves.

Jim Kirk’s Bisexuality: A Thesis
I mean, how could anyone ever think this.
How could we ever possibly arrive at or believe, that James T. Kirk, swaggering space captain, might be a bisexual character.
Like where are the receipts though? It’s such a massive 56 year old mystery?
You'd think if that were the case, there’d be some kind of proof by now. Like, oh I don't know, this:
Tumblr media
or this:

Or outfits like this:

Or all that looking at Spock constantly like this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or other substantiated canonical evidence like, you know, allusions right from the creator of the characters and the show. He knows what’s good, he made them, right? He’ll set the record (not so) straight.
Like that time Gene Roddenberry invented a whole new Vulcan word just to thoroughly describe Kirk and Spock’s unique and close relationship as (from TMP novel):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Or upon seeing Spock return to the bridge for the first time in TMP novel, how Jim Kirk mentally describes his relationship with Spock as follows:
Tumblr media
I mean, sure. Y’know. Just bro things. Being mind bonded and whatnot.
Or things posted on official Star Trek social media accounts like this:
Tumblr media
Or y’know, returning to the book by creator of Star Trek Gene Roddenberry (TMP) where they interview Kirk about his sexuality and he says, referring to rumours about him and Spock:
Tumblr media
So OK. Let’s just.
Let us just give pause here.
Take a moment, my child.
This is Gene Roddenberry, the creator of Star Trek, writing as James T. Kirk, who is describing to the world his sexuality:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
People.
I don’t ask for much in this life.
Can somebody please.
Please.
PLEASE EXPLAIN, how they got a 100% straight interpretation out of that.
WHAT PART OF THAT was not James T. Kirk getting up on a table and screaming to the world(s):
Jim: “HELLO UNIVERSE, JUST AN FYI, I’M DTF WITH ANYONE. Like A,NY,ONE. IT’S COOL WITH ME. JUST THOUGHT YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT. I’M GONNA GET DOWN FROM HERE NOW.”
Spock: Jim I am standing right here. The table display was unnecessary. (I also didn’t have to go ham on ‘em all like that. Damn. But I ain’t sorry.  Thank you for coming to my Ted X Talk about ficitonal space queers and for reading my Jim Kirk Bi-Ble. IDIC. Don’t forget to try the plomeek soup-)

There are LDS folks who believe a) all Spirit Children of our Heavenly Parents are binary male or female, and b) everyone's assigned sex at birth matches their Spirit's eternal gender. Since LDS theology holds that our underlying Spirit is part of an eternal existence that has no beginning or end, the binary gender view is particularly significant.
However, consider that there are times sex at birth is assigned incorrectly or cannot be determined:
Perhaps 100 billion humans have lived. If only .02% have had ambiguous/divergent genital/chromosomal presentation, we're discussing 20 million individuals, up to 2 million of whom are alive today. At broader definitions of intersex, that number is more than 100 million persons alive today - about the same percentage as people born with red hair.
Use whatever criteria you want to determine whether a body is male or female, somewhere there will be an individual who rides the line between male and female such that you cannot determine which side of the line they fall on. No matter who defines the criteria, or what those criteria are, there comes a point where we just can't tell.
Which Spirit does God put in that body? What if, under given criteria, the body is 60% male/40% female outside and 60% female/40% male inside? What Spirit is sent to the body then?
We don't have to go far to find cases that raise questions. Castor Semenya was born, raised and competed as a woman her entire life, until it was discovered she was XY (and she still competed as a woman some after that). Other cases, like a 33 yr old man with a uterus, ovaries and XX chromosomes internally, but full outward male genitalia, or an XY woman who never got her period, are mentioned relatively frequently in medical literature and the news. Development factors, natural and artificial, further complicate gender and sex identity. We're still learning about neurological differences outside of typically identified intersex characteristics.
If someone who is reproductively female spends their entire life as a man, what Spirit did God send to that body? Because somewhere, somewhen, this has happened and it may be more often than you think.
Since we cannot make a blanket statement about the gender of Spirits matching assigned sex at birth, let's be more careful about what we say. The truth is we don't always know. The gospel is about ministering to the one, and somewhere that one is listening to you. Be kind to them. Tell them the truth, even if that truth is 'we don't know all the answers for everyone' (LDS Handbook 38.7.7). There is goodness and power in admitting to not knowing everything and in pleading with the Lord for further light and knowledge. Such honesty may give us less to repent of later.
