"Initiate phase one," I added a growly undertone to my whisper, holding my phone inconspicuously, as if I was making a simple phone call. There was no answer but I didn't expect one: I was testing the voice recorder app that I had downloaded for the sole purpose of documenting and relaying the inevitable fall of one Flash Thompson.

Making my way through the crowd of students during the busiest time of the day, I made the most intrigued and outraged facial expression I possibly could. Spying my targets, I leaned against a nearby wall, putting a hand over my mouth in fake outrage, keeping my eyes wide and trained on the opposite wall. Just as I had predicted, the two sophomore girls started giving me side-eye by minute two of my staring and finally approached me as I contemplated the wall for whole five minutes.

"I'm sorry, are you okay?" The brunette asked, her blonde friend hanging a step back.

"Yeah, totally," I mumbled. "I'm, like, shook beyond imagination, but nothing, like, bad."

The girls traded a curious look, seemingly coming to some sort of conclusion. The greedy gleam in their eyes had me internally cheering. "What happened?" The blonde one asked, coming closer.

"I'm not sure if I should tell that to anyone," I stammered, watching them bodily move forward. "Well, okay, I can't keep quiet. But you must never, ever speak of it or I'll get expelled or something," I said nervously. They both nodded so rapidly it reminded me of Funko Pop figurines. "You know the senior guy, Flash? Brown hair, kinda hot?" Again, they both nodded, conspicuously grinning. "I think I just saw him in the closed girls bathroom on the third floor with, like, some brunette from Ms. Johnson's History class," They both gasped. Predictable. "But that's not the worst! They were like, y'know," I made an obscene gesture with my hand and they instantly covered their own mouths with their palms in shock. "And the chick was like 'is it in yet?' and he was like 'yah' and I just closed the door and ran, oh my god I hope they didn't hear me," I squealed at the end, playing the part of a mortified teenager.

All three of us giggled uncomfortably for a moment. The blonde girl stared at me suspiciously. "And what were you doing there?"

I faked a nervous stammer, looking around briefly and showing them my lighter for a moment. They both gasped and nodded in recognition. "Don't tell anybody or my mom is going to have kittens," I pleaded. Both of them nodded solemnly, noticing their own group of friends approach. I used the brief moment to get lost in the river of pupils and by the time they turned around to introduce me, I was already at the opposite part of the hallway.

For the time being, everything seemed peaceful. There were a few giggles and side-eyes directed towards Flash Thompson but nothing out of the ordinary. He was disliked by most of the student population even if nobody dared to admit it outright. I took care to walk around without my earbuds for the day and pulled out my phone to record the most interesting conversations around me whenever I caught the tell tale signs of a gossip mill beginning to run its course around the school.

"Oh my god, I heard about this girl that was caught fucking Flash in the girls bathroom and she literally said 'is it in yet', can you imagine the shock, jeez!"

"Some chick literally just rejected Flash because his dick was too small."

"Rebecca from AP chemistry told me someone saw Flash's micropenis. Poor guy!"

"I wonder if his girlfriend dumped him because he can't do shit, I mean, he doesn't look like the type to eat the kitty."

Those were just the highlights of the Friday afternoon. Come the weekend and the news of Flash's unfortunate condition will make the rounds through every single group chat that the school has and by the time Monday rolls around, nobody will have a clue who started the rumour in the first place. I had to carefully select the girls who were to distribute the rumour and I was happy with the outcome: Marissa and Layla with their squad of chatty, bored rich girls were the perfect choice. I thought they would jump at any opportunity to cause drama and I was right.

It was sufficient to say I was bristling with pride as I cut and compiled the audio track from today's school day before sending it to the group chat.

Clint, Peter and Natasha appeared online as soon as the message delivered and I was delighted at their response. Romanoff's kind words, specifically, made me all warm and mushy inside. I didn't resist the feeling, basked in it even as I did a happy dance around my room. Peter's nonsensical string of emojis was another point of laughter for me.

It wasn't exactly the smartest way to go about killing Thompson's reputation... Alas, simplicity is the way to success when it comes to large crowds of teenagers. That tiny little vindictive part of me was very much looking forward to the weekend and the results of the inevitable distortion of the rumour I had started. Who knew, maybe by Monday Flash Thompson would not only have a micropenis but horns and hooves as well.

Near bedtime, I had all the avengers send me their regards and thumbs up. I answered the flurry of texts as quickly as I could but there was no point in keeping up with ten or so people constantly streaming their questions, opinions and comments.

I settled on a single easiest response: pulling my dad's old uni sweatshirt over my tiny lacy pajamas to preserve some modesty, I settled in front of my mirror, turning on my Bluetooth speaker to play "Boss Ass Bitch". In true gen-z fashion, I put on my best resting witch face and solemnly lip-synced to the song's eponymous chorus. My eyeliner was sharp enough to cut paper and my prismatic highlighter glittered enigmatically in the cold light of my blue lava lamp.

The response was, once again, delightful and I genuinely belly-laughed at the adults' attempts to meme after Peter. His blushy face emoji started a whole nother conversation that I didn't participate in but watched from the sidelines with glee, snorting every time his friends and mentors gently teased him about the very obvious crush he harboured on me.

Seeing Peter starting to go absolutely nuts, I interjected with an offer (more like a dare) of a lip sync battle. He jumped on the bandwagon, immediately going offline to undoubtedly film an epic video of what I thought would be dorky-dancing to some hipster song. I was pleasantly surprised when it turned out to be a pre-recorded tik tok video of him and Ned fighting with lightsabers while mouthing the words to Fergalicious that played over the Imperial March.

Weirdos. I still followed him on the app, though, it was pretty funny.

Bucky interjected with a very well executed rendition of "Bring Me to Life": he was wearing his full Winter Soldier get-up, complete with an AK-47, dramatically serenading Steve who looked seventeen shades of done with his partner's antics. Wanda's following twenty second voice message consisted of nothing but pure hysterical laughter, summing up everyone's reaction to the video. Bucky was going to go viral one of these days...

Obviously, I had good competition and nobody else seemed to want to participate so I rearranged my surroundings a little bit and stood up at my full height and swapped the old sweatshirt for a cute crop-top hoodie. My thigh-highs were on display and with my make-up, I looked like a proper internet e-girl. I leaned against the mirror as I mouthed along to the song with my best interpretation of the famous Lucifer smirk, seasoned with a tiny bit of angelic innocence: "Doctor, doctor, give me the news, I got a bad case of loving you..."

Needless to say, I won the competition. Eventually Wanda joined in, looking menacing and ominous with her dark clothes and Natasha's red hair flashing somewhere in the background; even Tony did a round (AC/DC as his soundtrack of course) with one of his Iron Man suits but nothing beat my stunt and the reaction that it caused.

I had accidentally called out Bruce with the choice of my song and his teammates gave both of us a lot of cheeky comments about it. We relented and flirted with each other a bit as the conversation flowed into more mundane discussion; I said my good nights somewhere between Tony's bitching about the hobbies of my generation and my nightly skincare routine. The little green heart that I'd become accustomed to over the past few weeks greeted me just as I was about to lock my phone.

Bruce was really too precious for this world. My crush on him was different than the one on Tony, it mellowed out in comparison. I wanted him to hold me, to stroke my hair, to call me his darling and wrap me up in one of those dorky button-ups that he insisted on wearing in spite of Tony's unwanted, however very valid, fashion advice.

For all that's worth, the scientist probably knew or at least suspected and had the good grace to play along just enough to satisfy my deep need for attention... Without crossing any actual lines. It was frustrating, it was disappointing but I had virtually nothing to complain about. Besides, I didn't want to lose the quirky friendship that we had. Banner was, probably, the least judgemental person I knew and I wasn't about to trade that for an awkwardly stolen kiss.

Monday and Tuesday passed in a flurry of giggling and snorting every time Flash walked by. His girlfriend broke up with him, very publicly, accusing him of cheating and he didn't even deny it - just insulted her and stormed off, leaving even his friends looking lost and clueless. I started dragging Peter and his two pet nerds along with me just about everywhere I went in case Thompson decided to do something stupid again. If judging only by the looks he was throwing our little company, he was on his way to figuring out who began nibbling at his reputation.

The week was coming to an end and the rumour began dying off, slowly. That just didn't sit with me, I wanted the fucker gone. Due to the obvious time constraints, I approached MJ regarding Peter - after a brief argument, we came to an agreement regarding Peter's safety should I need to leave him alone in the hallways or at lunch.

I needed to do this alone so if I got caught, I won't drag them down with me. Granted, I would probably get something like a suspension and the school will attempt to call my mother (she never picks up) but that's about it. That's where her reputation comes in handy-people consciously avoid dealing with her, she can be that unbearable.

But first, I needed to get a teacher that's on my side. After carefully considering the candidates, I settled on my Social Studies professor - he taught the college-level classes and was overall a very chill, nice dude. And he disliked bullies with a flaming passion. So it didn't take me long to work him into a righteous fury - just a quick chat over a cup of tea in his homeroom and a few pictures of Peter's bruised face, complete with my own pleading puppy eyes. We agreed Mr Davies would "accidentally" leave the teacher's lounge unlocked during third period and I would sneak in. The plan wasn't foolproof but if it worked, not only Flash, but also his whole misogynistic, bigoted family would go down.

As I was leaving, Mr Davies looked up at me with a bright smile: "Give them Hell, alright?" And I suddenly noticed he was, in fact, very attractive. The smile brought out the fine wrinkles around his mouth, the crow's feet around his eyes - he smiled a lot. Silver strands mixed in with the wooden brown of his hair.

I let my eyes slide over him briefly before baring my teeth in return. "I owe you one," I don't know what possessed me to say that. My mouth really had a mind of its own sometimes. The room suddenly became hot.

"Sure," He replied, totally oblivious.

On Friday, I made myself a small nest in the empty classroom opposite the teacher's lounge and sat waiting for the signal from Mr Davies - he'd tap on the door once and I'd quietly go inside the teacher's lounge, retrieve Thompson's file and make my way back to the empty classroom to grab my backpack and carry the file to my locker for further examination.

The first part went successfully and I managed to snag Thompson's file. It was heavy and hefty, all the evidence of his rowdiness compiled into one flimsy plastic folder. There were A LOT of pink slips and I rejoiced internally: at least there was a paper trail of his exploits. The principal didn't do anything about it which was... If not against the rules then at least frowned upon; the plan was to take copies and anonymously submit them to the school board prompting at least an investigation into the blatant disregard for Flash's immoral and illegal behaviour.

On my way back I stumbled upon the principal herself which got me not only a stern talking to, but a whole detention for skipping class. Whatever, I was too elated from potentially ruining the life of a dumb fuck who ruined my friend's face.

Surprise came in the face of Mr Davies, who, having heard the commotion in the hallway, stepped out of his class and saw me being lectured by the principal.

"I'll take her for the detention," I heard the familiar voice behind me. The principal nodded solemnly and I had no choice but to sigh in resignation. "Three thirty, be here," He nodded to me, walking back, looking way too smug for his own good. So I wasn't the only one excited about the successful completion of stage two of my nefarious plan. Cue evil laughter.

DC/Marvel Crossover

Prompt: How about one where batsis goes on a solo mission and the avengers arrested her because they didn't know who she was and bat fam gets worried because she hasn't been back and Bruce sends Tim to get her

“You’re telling me that you want to break into Avengers Tower and … what? Download all of the information on the Avengers?”

Bruce nods, “That’s exactly what I want you to do. They have too many people on that team that could one day try and take over the world, I need to know how to stop them.”

“And how am I supposed to get into a building that houses a god, two super soldiers now, a Hulk, two assassins, and a genius? That’s not even including their handler, Phil, who I have met and have a deep respect for”

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out” Bruce lays a hand over your shoulder before making his way to the Batmobile, “I need those files, Y/N. I’m depending on you for this. Stark would expect me to go after the files, he won’t expect you. There’s a gala in one week that I am invited to, that would be the best time to strike, all of the Avengers are going to be in attendance.”

“Fine, I’ll start planning now”

Getting into Avengers Tower is surprisingly easy. There aren’t any assassins, or even that many security guards in the building. It isn’t until you’ve already gotten thought the servers firewall and are halfway finished uploading the Avengers files that you notice something is wrong.

Those files do not belong to you.

You let out a shriek (that you’ll deny later) when a voice starts talking from the ceiling. “What the fuck!?”

You have not been authorized by Sir to access these files.

“Who are you?”

I am JARVIS, I am the artificial intelligence that runs Avengers Tower. I have already scanned you, you are not a SHIELD agent, nor are you an employee of SI.

“And you’re just now confronting me? If you control the whole building why didn’t you stop me sooner?”

I was curious as to your goal

It sounds like the AI is amused, of course Stark would make an AI with an attitude. “And now that you know what I’m doing, what are you going to do?”

I have intercepted the file uploads and blocked them. I have also shut down the room you are currently in, have locked it, and informed Sir of your presence.

“Of fucking course you did”

You will not have to wait long, miss. The Avengers are on their way now.

Natasha Romanoff is the first one to reach you, and when she starts to tie your hands behind your back you don’t even try and stop her. You might be a vigilante in Gotham, but unlike your brothers and father, you know when you’re outmatched. So instead of further injuring yourself, you quietly submit to being tied up and gagged.

“JARVIS, who is she?”

I am currently running a facial recognition scan now, Agent Romanoff

“Good, I’m going to take her to Interrogation Room 3. Tell the others to meet us there”

Of course.

Natasha marches you down several flights of stairs, and through a steel door to an interrogation room.

“I’m going to take off the gag now, and you’re going to answer my questions. Understand?” The gag is quickly pulled off. “Now who are you?”

“It’s an honor to meet you, Ms. Romanoff. I’ve always looked up to you, you know? I mean you survived the Red Room, the Soviets, even the Winter Soldier. And what happened in Budapest! You and Mr. Barton were amazing there! I didn’t think you guys were gonna come out alive …”

A knife presses against your throat, leaving a shallow cut, “How do you know about any of that? Who sent you here? Who the hell are you?”

The door slams open, “Agent Romanoff! Put that away, and untie her”

“Sir …?”

“Now, Agent Romanoff”

The knife quickly pulls away from your throat, a thin trickle of blood left in its place, but you don’t pay much attention to it. Instead you twist around and throw a grin at the older man, “Hey, Phil, it’s been a while”

“Ms. Wayne, I can’t say that I am glad to see you. According to the report JARVIS gave me, you were attempting to upload the personal files for all of the Avengers. I assume that your father was the one to send you?”

“Yeah, Dad said something about needing to have a plan for if anyone here went evil, he wants to know how to kill them. You know my father likes his plans”

“Unfortunately, I won’t be able to get you out of this mess. The transgression did not happen on SHIELD soil. The Avengers will decide what they want to do with you”

“So … I get to meet everyone?”

Phil lets out a chuckle, “Yes, you will be able to meet the rest of the Avengers, however these aren’t the best circumstances to meet them under.”

“You really think dad would let me meet them any other way? This is probably the only time I’m gonna get to meet the Winter Soldier”

“The other Avengers won’t be happy with what you did. It was a complete violation of their privacy. Even if I put in a good word for you, I don’t know if they will listen to me”

“It’s fine. Even if they decide to torture me, I’ll be alright. I mean I’ve probably had worse from the Joker and from the al Ghul’s.”

Before Phil can answer, the door once again opens and Tony Stark steps through, “You can hold off on that facial recognition scan, JARVIS. I know who this is”

“Hello, Tony!”

“Hello, Y/N” He spins the chair around and plops down on it, straddling the back of it, “I can’t say I’m happy to see you though”

“I know, I hate that I had to do this, but you know my father, he’s not someone you say no to”

“Natasha, will you untie her?”

“Not until you tell me who she is, and what we are going to do with her” Natasha crosses her arms, knife still help tightly in one hand. “All I’ve gathered is that both you and Phil know who she is, and that she was attempting to steal our personal files.”

“Sorry, I forgot to introduce myself! My name is Y/N Wayne.”

Phil sighs quietly, “She is also known as the Sparrow, the one who managed to get Red Hood to stop unnecessarily killing, she is also SHIELDs contact in Gotham, and she is the liaison between SHIELD and the JLA”

“How have I never met her then?”

“It was considered a conflict of interest for me to meet the Avengers because I am already in the JLA. Of course, my father doesn’t give a damn that I’ve possibly just ruined the relationship between SHIELD and the JLA, all he cares about is being able to stop you if any of you decide to go homicidal.”

“He thinks that he’ll be able to stop any of us?”

You shrug as much as you can with your arms still bound, “No idea, I don’t try to understand his way of thinking. Phil,” You tilt back, trying to make eye contact with the agent, “You know he’s going to send one of my brothers after me. I don’t want them hurt”

“I’ll warn everyone, don’t worry. Now, Natasha, if you’ll untie Y/N and bring her to the common room. We can await the arrival of one of Y/N’s brothers there. In the meantime, you all can ask her any questions you’d like”

“So you’re telling me that Bruce Wayne is Batman, one of your brothers has come back from the dead, you aren’t allowed to kill any of the villains that have taken hundreds of lives, and that you were once a part of the League of Assassins. Am I missing anything?”

“Yeah, I once stopped Superman and Superboy when they were mind controlled, and I work as Lex Luthor’s assistant and help him curb his homicidal tendencies … I’ve also time travelled before”

Steve Rogers puts his head in his hands, “Of course you have. Is there anything else?”

“Nope” You glance around the common room, locking eyes with Bruce Banner, “Can you turn into the Hulk? I’d really like to see him again.”

“Again?”

“I met him once, about a year after you left America, he saved my life. I had just blown up one of the League of Assassins compounds and didn’t get out in time, I was trapped under rubble. I had accepted the fact that I was going to die there when a huge green hand smashed through the rubble and dragged me out. Hulk left before I could even say thank you”

“I don’t remember that”

You flash a brief smile, “I’m not surprised, I did some research on you after that. You don’t remember 85% of what happens when you’re the Hulk, right?”

“Yes, that’s correct, how did you …?”

“I have a lot of connections, Dr. Banner. Who do you think was the one that got General Ross to leave you alone once you came back to America?”

Bruce’s eyes go wide, “You … you … how?”

“I have some friends in high places that owed me a favor or two, they cracked down hard on Ross, forced him to stop hunting you. SHIELD tried to get him to stop, but even though they’re a top secret government organization they didn’t have enough leverage to get thing’s done”

It takes Bruce a minute or two to speak after that, “Thank you, that means a lot that you’d do something like that”

“He saved my life, it’s the least I could do”

“So, Phil, how do you know Y/N?” Clint drops down from the vent opening, perching on the arm of the couch.

“Phil and I met while he was in Tahiti, after the Chitauri invasion.”

“Why were you in Tahiti?”

“I was captured by the al Ghul’s and tortured for 4 months. By the time my family found me I was almost dead. SHILED sent me there to heal, like they did with Phil. We’ve run into each other a few times after that, but that was where we met”

Phil rolls his eyes, “Y/N refused to stay in her hospital room and constantly snuck into mine while we healed. I wasn’t allowed out of bed for several weeks, and every day Y/N would limp into my room to keep me company”

“Phil’s someone I consider a good friend now”

Clint sticks his bottom lip out, pouting at his handler, “How come I never heard of her? We could have been BirdBros!”

“I’ve been begging Phil for years to let me meet you guys, but he kept saying that it was a ‘conflict of interest’ but I just think that he didn’t want to deal with the paperwork”

Phil raised one eyebrow, “Unfortunately it seems that I wasn’t able to keep you two apart, and now I dread the mayhem that you will cause.”

“Mayhem will have to wait until after my brother’s inevitable rescue attempt”

Surprisingly it’s Tim that was sent to rescue you. The Avengers had put you back into the interrogation room, and were all watching from the control room.

“Hey, Red. I thought you were off with the Titans this week.”

“B called me in, said that you needed to be rescued, and some files needed to be retrieved”

“I’m sorry, babybird, but we won’t be getting those files today”

Tim smirks, “They don’t even know I’m here …”

The speaker crackles to life, “Unfortunately, kid, we do know you’re here and your sister’s right, you won’t be getting access to those files tonight”

“Sorry, Red, they kinda set up a trap to catch all of us birds. They knew that someone would come for me, and now someone will come for the both of us.”

Tim sighs, “Do we have to stay in this room the whole time?”

The door opens and Tony steps in, “Of course you won’t. It’s team bonding night, so movies and snacks. I’ll even let you call your other brothers so they can get in on the action.”

“We’re going to have a sleepover with the Avengers?”

You chuckle, “It looks like it, babybird, it looks like it”

Olympics, Music, Broadcasting And A Sense Of British Pride

This will be a bit different from previous posts, but it’s something I’ve wanted to talk about for a while. This is a story set in the Summer of 2012, and focuses on music, animation and technology used by the BBC in their television programming for the London Olympics.

A Mammoth Preparation

Let me set the scene - it’s a cold wet Winter in the British Isles, preparations are well under way for the Games of the XXX Olympiad and the XIV Paralympics, more commonly known as the London 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games happening the following year in July. Venues are having their finishing touches added to them, the London Mayor’s office is planning transport links for the huge surge in visitors, athletes are training in their home countries to get ready for the Games and the BBC are laying out their plans for television and radio coverage. Before anything kicked off, the hype was big enough in the UK that they even made a mockumentary about organising the Games.

I don’t work in media (yet), I certainly don’t work in the BBC but I can have an idea about the huge undertaking that broadcasting the Olympic Games (in the British Broadcasting Corporation’s home country and city) must be. And for 2012, the BBC were going full out; they planned to broadcast all 5000 hours of sport across 27 channels including the red button, Sky, Freeview, Freesat and online.

There’s a lot to prepare like: what programming they’re going to have and what features they want to produce and what filming locations they will be at and which presenters and commentators they want and what additional visual and audio equipment they’ll need and all the hundreds of behind the scenes crew that come with that as well as additional systems they need to set up to facilitate such a large amount of television being sent over the airways. And a big chunk of the BBC’s coverage is live which adds a whole layer of complexities.

I could quite easily nerd-out on the audio-visual and broadcasting technicalities the BBC/OBS (Olympic Broadcasting Services) set up for the 2012 Olympics like suspending the BBC Parliament channel to make room for more sport and how the Games were broadcast in 3D across the world but that’s not the main focus of this post today.

A Song For The Olympics

The BBC isn’t new to this shindig - they’ve broadcast live coverage of every Summer Olympic Games since 1960. A small but significant part of this coverage is a theme tune and a title sequence, and that’s actually what this post is about.

In November 2011, it was announced that Elbow, an English alternative/indie rock band would compose the soundtrack for the BBC’s Olympic coverage. This is on the back of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games, in which Jamie Hewlett and Damon Albarn (the musicians behind the British virtual band Gorillaz) produced music and animation for the opening titles.

"This builds on our recent tradition of using great British contemporary artists to deliver our music, as we did with Damon Albarn in 2008; and we reckon Elbow have a unique combination of credibility - hence their Mercury Prize - with a style that can be enjoyed by people of all ages." - Roger Mosely, BBC's Director of London 2012. The BBC asked Elbow to come in and consult on composing the soundtrack. It’s reported they said: “if we asked you to do the Olympic theme, what would you do?” Garvey was told he had been invited along because of Elbow's 2008 single One Day Like This (an epic, anthemic, art-rocky track), which has been used on countless sport montages. Garvey replied: “Well, we can give you something similarly rousing. Something anthemic and bold. And we'd put lots of different parts in it for different parts of the coverage.”

And that is just what they did.

The track isn’t available on Spotify or officially from Elbow due to it being a commission by the BBC (of which royalties were waived in support for charity). Additionally, it was only released as a digital-download through selected retailers, none of which still seem to be selling it. So unfortunately this YouTube rip is the best quality I could find.

“First Steps” by Elbow is an epic 6 minute 21 second lasting tidal wave of sound that hits you with incredible emotion. The anthem was composed in secret by Elbow in Salford over the 2011-2012 Winter and recorded with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the NovaVox gospel choir in Spring. Although the full version lasts more than six minutes, it was intentionally composed to allow different clips of one or two minutes to be played during montages of winners or losers. Additionally 40, 30 and five second edits along with a title sequence were used throughout the BBC’s London 2012 campaign.

The first bars of it would be aired around the time of the torch relay beginning in May 2012, with the full work revealed near to the Olympic Games opening ceremony. A one-minute edit of the track, accompanied with video sequence (more on that later) was first shown on BBC One during half-time of the UEFA Euro 2012 final on Sunday 1 July 2012. A four-minute edit of the track was premiered on Chris Evans' Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2 on Friday 27 July 2012 (the morning of the opening ceremony). It was used in the opening and closing title sequences of BBC Sport’s Olympics coverage on the first and final days of the Olympics as well as throughout the Games.

It is in my opinion the perfect backdrop to an incredible event and an important time for the country as a whole. It’s so jaw-droppingly powerful and inspiring, it gives me goosebumps every time I listen to it and I have to commend everyone who worked on the track for such an accomplishment of music. Furthermore, Elbow are such nice chaps that they even waived all fees and royalites from digital downloads of the track in support of Children In Need (a BBC charity and annual fundraising telethon).

But this is only half the story, as while the music is incredible and served as brilliant theme/incidental/identity music for BBC Sport throughout their Olympic coverage - they still needed a title sequence.

“Stadium UK”, named for the concept (seen in the sequence) of a giant stadium encircling the UK with athletes preparing and competing in a variety of landscapes, was devised by creative agency Rainey Kelly Campbell Roalfe Y&R. The animation was created by Passion Pictures and it was produced by Red Bee Media in conjunction with the BBC and Elbow.

The anthemic composition and the accompanying visuals were intended to sum up the achievement of reaching the Olympics, the emotions of those who win and those who do not, and the coming together of the whole country to support the event. The title was inspired by a child of one of the band members of Elbow learning to walk during the composition of the song, symbolising the hope and achievement of the moment.

As previously mentioned, this “trailer for the Olympics” was first shown during the Euro 2012 final and many more times leading up to the Opening Ceremony. It’s hard to get across the collective hype that was being experienced in Britain before the start of the London Olympics, because for a lot of people it would be a once in a lifetime event that simply couldn’t be missed. Olympic fever was really was everywhere you went. In the news, on signposts, in casual workplace conversation, on banners in pubs. To be fair though, us Brits love a big ol’ national celebration, we’d done the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee just a month prior.

I can say with some degree of certainty that this Summer in 2012 was one of the biggest, and uncharacteristically, happiest moments for the country in many years. Many people were still reeling from the 2008 recession, the coalition government was struggling to co-operate following the 2010 general election and resulting hung-parliament and just a year ago many major English towns were something akin to a war-zone during the 2011 riots. The Olympics were a distraction, and the relative importance of sporting contests can be argued, but what can’t be is how much of a mood-lifter it was for much of the population. This title sequence got people excited - it had a major impact as it showcased the best of Britain. It not only reminded people that some of our own athletes are some of the best in the whole world, but that the upcoming Games would be a chance to show the world all of the wonderful, impressive and sometimes strange things about the United Kingdom. And that was something to look forward to.

A Legacy For Decades

The impact of the 2012 Olympics continues to this day, mainly in the form of sport centres with signs that say “home of the 2012 Olympic [sport] events” and golden postboxes on the sides of streets emblazoned with the names of winning athletes. The BBC have long since scaled back their broadcasting following the conclusion of the Games although due to the huge and somewhat slightly unexpected huge popularity of their coverage, many features of those Games’ coverage that were being trialled for the first time were implemented in wider usage must faster than they would have been without the Games. Notably; Twitter and social media interaction, live-blogs on the BBC Sport website and additional Red Button live broadcasting, which has been re-used for basically every Wimbledon tennis tournament since.

Elbow’s music hasn’t been entirely forgotten either (I hope this post proves that). I heard it recently during the BBC’s coverage of the annual London Marathon, they’re certainly getting mileage out of it. And why not re-use it for future sporting events, the track’s emotion and feeling is just as applicable to something like the London Marathon as it is to the Olympics. Not mentioned up until now but there was actually an official song for the London 2012 Olympic Games called “Survival”, by another English rock band: Muse. It does deserve a very honourable mention as Muse are a great band and it’s a brilliant song, but it’s very different in style and I would argue is not what people think of when you ask the question “what was the music for the 2012 Olympics?”. There were also two soundtrack albums for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, but these are mainly live cover performances from those ceremonies.

To conclude, the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games were incredible, and I get rather patriotic when talking about them. Bar a few controversies it was largely a huge success. Millions of people who were not able to attend events in person were able to be part of the action thanks to the impeccable British Broadcasting Corporation. Fantastic programming and coverage, great features and analysis and one stellar title sequence and music track. We all know the on-screen presenters but I don’t think the behind-the-scenes crew get nearly enough praise - so personally I would like to say thank you to those hundreds upon hundreds of people who worked thankless tasks so people like me could be a part of one of the greatest events this country’s ever hosted. And thanks to Elbow, for a work of musical genius, that continues to inspire and send chills down the spine of every hopeful athlete or just plain old regular person to this day.
