Christopher Nolan’s highly-anticipated movie “Oppenheimer,” set for release July 21, 2023, depicts J. Robert Oppenheimer and his role in the development of the atomic bomb. But while the Manhattan Project wouldn’t have been possible without the work of many accomplished female scientists, the only women seen in the movie’s trailer are either hanging laundry, crying or cheering the men on.The only women featured in the official trailer for Christopher Nolan’s ‘Oppenheimer’ are crying, hanging laundry or supporting the men.
As a physics professor who studies ways to support women in STEM – science, technology, engineering and math – fields and a film studies professor who worked as a screenwriter in Hollywood, we believe the trailer’s depiction of women reinforces stereotypes about who can succeed in science. It also represents a larger trend of women’s contributions in science going unrecognized in modern media.
Lise Meitner: A pioneering role model in physics
The Manhattan Project would not have been possible without the work of physicist Lise Meitner, who discovered nuclear fission. Meitner used Einstein’s E=MC² to calculate how much energy would be released by splitting uranium atoms, and it was that development that would prompt Einstein to sign a letter urging President Franklin Roosevelt to begin the United States’ atomic research program.
Einstein called Meitner the “Madame Curie of Germany” and was one of a pantheon of physicists, from Max Planck to Niels Bohr, who nominated Meitner for a Nobel Prize 48 times during her lifetime.
Meitner never won. Instead, the prize for fission went to Otto Hahn, her male lab partner of 30 years in Berlin. Hahn received the news of his nomination under house arrest in England, where he and other German scientists were being held to determine how far the Third Reich had advanced with its atomic program.
Of Jewish descent, Meitner had been forced to flee the Nazis in 1938 and refused to use this scientific discovery to develop a bomb. Rather, she spent the rest of her life working to promote nuclear disarmament and advocating for the responsible use of nuclear energy.
Meitner was not the only woman who made a significant contribution during this time. But the lack of physics role models like Meitner in popular media leads to real-life consequences. Meitner doesn’t appear as a character in the film, as she was not part of the Manhattan Project, but we hope the script alludes to her groundbreaking work.
A lack of representation
Only around 20% of the undergraduate majors and Ph.D. students in physics are women. The societal stereotypes and biases, expectation of brilliance, lack of role models and chilly culture of physics discourage many talented students from historically marginalized backgrounds, like women, from pursuing physics and related disciplines.
Societal stereotypes and biases influence students even before they enter the classroom. One common stereotype is the idea that genius and brilliance are important factors to succeed in physics. However, genius is often associated with boys, and girls from a young age tend to shy away from fields associated with innate brilliance.
Studies have found that by the age of 6, girls are less likely than boys to believe they are “really, really smart.” As these students get older, often the norms in science classes and curricula tend not to represent the interests and values of girls. All of these stereotypes and factors can influence women’s perception of their ability to do physics.
Research shows that at the end of a yearlong college physics course sequence, women with an “A” have the same physics self-efficacy as men with a “C”. A person’s physics self-efficacy is their belief about how good they are at solving physics problems – and one’s self-efficacy can shape their career trajectory.
Women drop out of college science and engineering majors with significantly higher grade-point averages than men who drop out. In some cases, women who drop out have the same GPA as men who complete those majors. Compared to men, women in physics courses feel significantly less recognized for their accomplishments. Recognition from others as a person who can excel in physics is the strongest predictor of a student’s physics identity, or whether they see themselves as someone who can excel in physics.
More frequent media recognition of female scientists, such as Meitner, could vicariously influence young women, who may see them as role models. This recognition alone can boost young women’s physics self-efficacy and identity.
When Meitner started her career at the beginning of the 20th century, male physicists made excuses about why women had no place in a lab – their long hair might catch fire on Bunsen burners, for instance. We like to believe we have made progress in the past century, but the underrepresentation of women in physics is still concerning.
Diversity as an asset to science
If diverse groups of scientists are involved in brainstorming challenging problems, not only can they devise better, future-oriented solutions, but those solutions will also benefit a wider range of people.
Individuals’ lived experiences affect their perspectives – for example, over two centuries ago, mathematician Ada Lovelace imagined applications far beyond what the original inventors of the computer intended. Similarly, women today are more likely to focus on applications of quantum computers that will benefit their communities. Additionally, physicists from Global South countries are more likely to develop improved stoves, solar cells, water purification systems or solar-powered lamps. The perspectives that diverse groups bring to science problems can lead to new innovations.
Our intention is not to disparage the “Oppenheimer” movie, but to point out that by not centering media attention on diverse voices – including those of women in physics like Meitner – filmmakers perpetuate the status quo and stereotypes about who belongs in physics. Additionally, young women continue to be deprived of exposure to role models who could inspire their academic and professional journeys'

pygmalion for the wip meme!! 💖💖
this is the felix and malkar pre-series backstory one and I'm pretty sure I didn't just start writing it so I could make the pygmalion reference but also probably I was thinking about it at the time. basically just me digging a little more into particularly the early days of felix's, uh, apprenticeship and his relationship with malkar pre-series, because that's the shit that I'm into.
Before the fire, before Lorenzo and the Shining Tiger, me and Joline used to tell each other stories. Stupid stories, the kind only dumb kids and kept thieves less than a septad believe, about one day some flash lady seeing us and feeling so sorry for us that she’d buy us from Keeper and we’d go home to her big house. And there’d be big fancy baths with scented soap and always enough food for seconds. And if one of us was there and the other wasn’t we promised each other we’d go begging saying we were sister and brother and couldn’t possibly be kept apart, lady, if you please. Then the fire, and Keeper died, and Joline died, and I saw a fair number of flashies but weren’t none of them going to take me home with them. And then there was Malkar.

So don’t freak out
Synopsis - Clarisse is Bad at keeping secrets
Pairings - college! Clarisse x mortal fem! Reader
IMPORTANT - this FIC takes Place after PJO and HOO and is during TOA, so spoilers are ahead, this is basically cannon clarisse outside of camp
Tumblr media
It had been a year since clarisse left camp. After the war against the Roman’s and Gaea she was just ready to finally attend college and be a ‘normal’ girl.
So far everything was going great. In an advance intro to Greek mythology and culture course mainly she took since she needed a fine arts credit she met you. You were just some mortal girl, at first she didn’t really notice you but after being assigned on a project together she quickly realized how much she liked you.
Even after you introduced clarisse to your friend group and invited her out to eat she just couldn’t get you out of her mind. She would pray to her father and Aphrodite in hopes for advice little did she know Aphrodite was playing match maker against ares better judgement.
After a few months clarisse caved and asked you out.. Even after a few dates she was still to nervous to ask the question so you did, that’s how you two started to date.
Your relationship was perfect. You loved spending time with clarisse and her mother, you also love playing with her hair and watching her when she would dominate the court no matter what sport it was in the gym.
——
You were sitting by clarisse in her dorm room as you did an assignment. “Uh huh, you know you really enjoy the story of achilles and Patroclus”
Clarisse rolled her eyes. “Shut up”
“I’m serious!” You joked “I don’t know it’s just the way you talk about him and write his story it’s like you are him, or maybe you lost your Patroclus so you relate” you smiled at first but soon straightened your position when she grew quiet. “Did I..”
“No.. no” clarisse sighed and set her pen down before rubbing her eyes.. she let out a sigh and looked over at you gently grabbing your hand. “About two years ago.. there was this big event in my life. I had a best friend named silena.. she was my everything and I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love her.. silena had recently lost her boyfriend and when she had died in the accident which was my fault, it hurt.. a lot. I did everything I could to save her and I even got vengeance for her, so In a way yeah I lost my Patroclus but that’s ok.. I have you now” she leaned over and kissed your cheek wanting to cheer you up some.
You rubbed her hand softly.. you had so many questions but decided against it not wanting to press the issues.
——
It was Saturday. Clarisse was messing around with you as you two were walking back towards the college campus while laughing together after going on a date. You let go of her hand and walked ahead before stopping so you could take some pictures of her..
Once clarisse caught up and took your phone out of your hand she leaned down and kissed you. “You know your dumb right” you rolled your eyes. “Yeah I’m aware”
There was a loud bang from an alley way.. while you thought nothing of it You noticed clarisse tensing up. “Babe-“
She grabbed you and forced you behind her. “Don’t move” she instructed. You were confused, what you saw was a stray dog eating some trash but clarisse was acting like she saw a monster. “Y/n” she whispered and grabbed your waist. “We’re gonna run”
“Lise what’s going on”
“I’ll explain later but we need to RUN!” She yelled and grabbed your hand running down the street with the barking dog now chasing you.. you had never seen clarisse act like this..
Turn after turn after turn. All you knew was that clarisse continued to run with you in her hand, you looked back and for a moment the dog chasing you… it wasn’t a dog it looked bigger meaner.. hellish even. You didn’t understand and you didn’t want to.
Eventually clarisse threw you into a random gas station and slammed against a shelf panting.. the dog sat patiently outside not moving but eerily watched as you and clarisse caught your breath. Clarisse dragged you to the bathroom and locked the door. “Look—“
“Clarisse what the fuck is going on!” You yelled, your dress now messed up along side your now frizzy hair and sweaty face. “It’s a dog!”
She held her head down before looking at you with concern. “It’s.. a dog” You spoke however this time less assure in yourself.
Clarisse shook her head and opened the bathroom door.. she walked out for a moment before coming back and nodding her head in a different direction. “Common this way” she softly took your hand, you squinted your eyes thinking you were seeing things.. it was almost like clarisse had a spear? In her Hand more specifically an Ancient Greek style spear. You shook your head and the spear disappeared leaving only clarisses keys in her hand.
You left out the back way and took a longer way back to campus.. neither of you spoke until you got to clarisses dorm.
You sat down on her bed and watched as she hung her keys on the wall.. there it was again the spear but it left as soon as you saw it.
“Claire”
“Hm” she flatly spoke and opened her computer.
“That wasn’t a dog was it..” you spoke quietly. She sent an email before sighing and walking infront of you taking your hands. “No.. no it wasn’t”
“Can I Tell You something Crazy” You mumbled, clarisse nodded while squeezing your hands. “The dog…. It almost looked like a hellhound like from Mr. Anthony’s talk on Greek monsters, I know I sound crazy.. but it only lasted for a second”
“That’s” she gave a dramatic sigh. “That’s because it was a hellhound” You looked up confused. “Y/n.. there’s something you need to know”
This was to much. You didn’t like any of this clarisses tone the apparent hell hound chasing you NOW the spear on the wall clear as day not disappearing. You faced clarisse again and nodded. “All those myths you know and love.. their real and I am a daughter of ares”
At first there was silence until you started to laugh. Clarisse looked back at you offended all while you just laughed. “You’ve gotta be joking!” Clarisse was starting to grow irritated, you calmed down.. noticed clarisses face you Just scoff. “Right because Zeus and hades and fucking ares all exist? Clarisse baby I love you but if your seeing things we can get you help I mean me seeing a hellhound of everything was probably just a result of the alcohol I had earlier and some adrenaline”
Clarisse tapped her foot before letting go and going to her night stand. You watched as she rummaged through until she pulled out a golden coin. “What are You Gonna do with that” You asked with a smile.
“Prove to you I’m not lying” she sighed and grabbed a crystal her roommate had, she propped it up on a table and flashed her phones flashlight through it to make a prism and stepped back. “Oh Iris, goddess of the Rainbow, please accept my offering."
She tossed the coin into the cystals light and it dissolved..your smile dropped and was replaced by confusion. “Camp halfblood Dionysius”
The prism shimmered and soon showed a reflection of a middle aged man sitting at a table with a centaur beside him.
Chiron looked up and smiled. “Ah clarisse daughter of ares, what can I do for you”
Mr.D looked over and rolled his eyes. “Clementine always a pleasure” his tone clearly sarcastic
Clarisse rolled her eyes. “You mean clarisse”
“Same thing”
You had a look of horror on your face as you watched the scene before you. “Claire.. did you say Chiron as in the centaur guy” The two men exchanged looks wondering what the call was really about.
She nodded and held her hand out now showing Chiron and Mr. D You.. there was some silence until Mr.D complained.
She ended the Iris message and turned to face you. “You believe me Now” You nodded slowly, she chuckled and walked over grabbing your cheeks and kissing your forehead.
“I.. have a shit ton to explain” she sighed but smiled as you hugged her in response. Clarisse was worried, you were a mortal now stepping into her world but one thing clarisse knew was that you weren’t gonna get hurt she would make sure of that.
Tumblr media
Clarisse - and uh that was the battle of manhatten

Finished another quilt! An art quilt with raw edge applique and free motion quilting because that's an appropriate project for a beginner, right? But I had this pattern for at least 18 months after I've seen someone else do it on reddit.
And now I'm on meth! Methylphenidate I mean. And have reorganized my room to actually take full advantage of the space. I'm so fucking productive right now!
The pattern is called Ariel by Lise Bélanger, at libexpression.com and etsy.
Anyhow, happy pride everyone!

Tagged for the 'fic writer interview' by @veliseraptor!
I feel like I may have seen this meme going around before? Some of these questions strike me as familiar, particularly the 'thoughts on foreign language dialogue?' one, since I'm puzzled as to what this question is asking and I remember being stymied by it before. I think that I want to fill this one out with any answers that have changed since last time and any questions I like to talk about, and skip the questions that don't have interesting answers.
Fic Writer Interview
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
207 as of current!
2. What's your total AO3 word count?
2,939,672. Getting close to the 3million mark there -- possibly, as with Lise's case, this year's MDZS big bang may put me over the top. (If not, that + other current project probably will.)
3. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Without even looking I'm pretty sure that the top two spaces will be Loki fics and the third will be Ceru's fic, lmao. *checks*
Close! Loki fics take up first, third, and fifth place, and Ceru's fic is in second. However *yakety sax arrangement for guqin and xiao* has crept into the top five, at place 4, making it the first of my Untamed fics to do so. (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧
4. Do you respond to comments? Why or why not?
Yes, usually. There are some factors that may lead me to not respond including 1) too short or had no content for me to reply to (i.e. a string of emojis), 2) it's on a fic from a fandom I don't really consider myself part of any more, or 3) too negative, such as when people for some reason have chosen to use the comment box as a space to rant about how much they hate a character, oftentimes with little to no connection to what I actually wrote.
On the other hand, I will almost always reply to a comment that poses a direct question, also incl. requests for permission to translate or podfic. I love when people ask questions. It used to be an ongoing source of angst to me when people would leave comments with questions on Fanfic.net, but without any way for me to reply. ╯︿╰
5. What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
Probably Rise From Ash, a downer ending Loki fic where Loki got caught in a timeloop trying to prevent Ragnarok from happening. More recently, probably nostrum. In both cases though the Bad Ending is simply a reversion to canon mean, so it probably could have been worse.
6. What's the fic you've written with the happiest ending?
I do love happy endings! There's usually at least some element of melancholy or bittersweetness, but the ones I'd say are most happiness-loaded with that regard would probably be either One Elegant Solution (which was literally written for the purposes of giving the characters the happiest possible ending) or the coda ending of the refrain series (where I literally spell out at the end what I think the ideal ending for each character would look like.)
7. Do you write crossovers?
Not in the old-school understanding of the term crossovers, where the characters and settings of series A and series B literally meet and interact, but I write a lot of fusions, where characters of series A are placed in setting of series B or are otherwise remixed together. Modern fandom seems to have largely elided the distinction.
8. Have you ever received hate on a fic?
A few times. I'd put these into three buckets: 1) people who didn't like what I was doing with the character/story and told me so, but were civil about it and merely stated they were not going to continue reading; 2) people who write unprompted character hate in my comments, usually unrelated to whatever's going on in the text, which I don't enjoy but don't really take personally; and 3) people actually writing callouts or otherwise putting me 'on blast' for a specific fic. That last one has only happened once (that I know of) and while it wasn't particularly upsetting to me either then or now, it sure was A Trip. This is already a long post, so I won't elaborate here unless someone asks.
9. Do you write smut?
Occasionally. It's one of my less favorite things to write, but I'll do it if the story seems to call for it.
10. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
This rings a very very faint bell, possibly sometime in the aughts I have a vague recollection of encountering one of my own stories on some geocities site under someone else's name, but I don't recall who it was or which fic. Not since then that I know of.
11. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Enough times that I have lost track of all the specific instances, but I think maybe once or twice a year I'll get a request by someone to do a translation or podfic. I do not recall any instance where I said no, but I do prefer to be asked first.
12. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yes! With @faux-fires, a Tsubasa Chronicle sci-fi AU, many years ago. Alas the currents of life took us in different directions before we could write the next part.
13. What's your all-time favorite ship?
Don't have an interesting answer for this.
14. What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
I do have lingering regrets over my abandoned WIPs from Critical Role fandom, Molly's Moving Castle and Fjord Mustang's YEEHAW! Fun and Pony Ranch, both of which fell victim to the march of canon and my eventual departure from the fandom. The latter fic in particular was going to go some wild places.
15. What are your writing strengths?
I think my pacing is excellent, my character voices are usually solid, I can do humor very well and action competently. I can spin a coherent plot and an exciting adventure. I both enjoy and am good at AU worldbuilding and can convey exposition without infodumping, and can do melodrama and angst that packs a solid punch.
16. What are your writing weaknesses?
Mostly those of career fanfic authors everywhere: I'm weak at developing original characters and largely unmotivated to write plots that don't shadow or mirror the original text in some way. I've also noticed a recurring and growing difficulty with romance; I like romance, but when trying to write a romantic story, often fail to move the romance arc convincingly forward. (See also above answer re: smut.)
17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
Don't have an interesting answer for this.
18. What was the first fandom you wrote for?
Gundam Wing, baby! I feel like there was a bit of a GW revival on tumblr recently? Man, now there was a fandom whose fanon vastly overshadowed its canon.
19. What's a fandom/ship you haven't written for yet but want to?
Fandom - I have a half-written draft for an Encanto fanfic lying around somewhere, if you can believe it; I'd also like to do some ZhanChengXian work, but haven't figured out an approach for it yet. If a romance with two principals is hard for me, imagine how much harder adding a third participant must be!
20. What's your favorite fic you've written?
Not gonna pick one! I like some fics more than others, for various different reasons, but none of them stand out as an All Time Favorite.
And that's it! For tagging people... @cerusee, @faux-fires, perhaps @tavina-writes or @nyoomerr?

So @veliseraptor finally posted a fic she finished ages ago that is really something wonderful - and I'm not just saying it because I edited it.
I know you all want to read about Pete saving Vegas from kidnappers as they both try to pretend Vegas has a normal life actually in front of his rich, fancy college friends!

ANATOMY OF A FALL (ANATOMIE D'UNE CHUTE) (2023)
Starring Sandra Hüller, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado-Graner, Antoine Reinartz, Samuel Theis, Jehnny Beth, Saadia Bentaieb, Camille Rutherford, Anne Rotger, Sophie Fillières, Julien Comte, Pierre-François Garel, Savannah Rol, Ilies Kadri, Vincent Courcelle-Labrousse, Cécile Brunet-Ludet, Nesrine Slaoui, Antoine Bueno, Anne-Lise Heimburger and Messi the dog.
Screenplay by Justine Triet / Arthur Harari.
Directed by Justine Triet.
Distributed by Neon. 152 minutes. Rated R.
If you want to see the difference between America and France – both in judicial pursuits and also in simple filmmaking styles – all you have to do is watch Anatomy of a Fall.
Anatomy of a Fall is technically a courtroom drama, but it turns out that there is so much more to it than that. It tells the story of a couple who are living in a huge farmhouse in the French Alps, one that French husband Samuel (Samuel Theis) is trying to renovate and resell, but it is turning out to be much more expensive than he originally imagined.
His German wife Sandra (Sandra Hüller) had moved to his old hometown for the project, even though she knows few people there. Sandra is a relatively successful novelist. Samuel is also a writer, but he never has had his wife’s success. Their marriage has also been changed by the fact that their son Daniel (Milo Machado-Graner) had an accident while Samuel was supposed to be watching him, which has nearly completely ruined his eyesight. (He can see a bit but is essentially legally blind.)
In this tinderbox, one day Samuel falls out of the attic window and is killed. But did he commit suicide? Or did his wife murder him?
The legal system seems to be pretty certain that it is the second choice, particularly when it comes to light that Samuel has been secretly recording conversations with his wife – supposedly to gain material for a potential book – and those recordings include a few rather contentious arguments, at least one of which appears to have led to violence. Therefore, Sandra is forced to come to court and defend her life – literally.
Also drawn into the maelstrom is young Daniel, who has been witness to the animosity building in his parents’ marriage. He doesn’t want to believe that his mother could have done so horrific an act, at the same time he doesn’t want to believe that his father was suicidal. Therefore, he goes to court almost every day, reliving the horror and learning secrets about his parents’ strained marriage, which is shown throughout in flashbacks.
It's an intriguing story, and frankly one that is probably all too common. A bunch of basically good people getting into bad situations and taking it out on each other. No matter who is ultimately responsible, no one will come out unscathed. And no one can really know exactly what happens in anyone else’s home.
Watching the film as an American, even when the verdict comes down, you’re half expecting the other shoe to drop. And while Anatomy of a Fall does spend a good 10-20 minutes on exploring how the verdict affected the main characters, it does not throw in one last plot twist. Perhaps, just perhaps, the legal system could have actually gotten something right.
It’s not totally surprising that Anatomy of a Fall does not mimic the traditional legal thriller. Writer/director Justine Triet said that she was trying to emulate Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage rather than say… Witness for the Prosecution or Law & Order.
In doing so, she has made one of the most intriguing legal dramas in recent memory.

WIP meme: let the foxes fight ?
I have to ask about DoL fic but if I can do two I am 👀 beholding the "original fiction- ex villains project" also
i'll allow it (she said officiously and entirely non-seriously)
so let the foxes fight is one that I think I referenced relatively recently as one of my fics that's like...this feels relevant to only my interests, probably, and would not exactly be a Hit even if anything in doctrine of labyrinths fandom could be described as a Hit (considering its size). the premise is basically "mildmay finds himself back in time before felix gets picked up by malkar, and takes it upon himself to rescue a traumatized older-younger brother from the brothel he's stuck in, and then is like 'okay but what do i do with him now' because as much as mildmay i think likes kids and knows from trauma this is not exactly a situation he was/is prepared to deal with.
i also don't really know where this is going, which is part of why this one has been sitting unfinished on my hard drive for literal years. part of my policy of "oooh I have an idea, let me just start writing it and see what happens" and then a couple thousand words in I run into a wall.
I exhaled hard trying to think what to say and finally just said, “I ain’t mad.” He gave me that real careful sideways look. “You ain’t,” he said slowly. I shook my head and he unwound a little, maybe, so I guess he might be buying my story about being a long-lost relative. That was a kept-thief fairytale right there. Felix was a little old for those now but I guess you never really grew out of wanting. “Yeah,” I said. “Like I said. I just want to help.” He relaxed a little more, and nodded, barely. “Okay,” he said, and gave me this little nervous smile, and it looked like the ones he’d given me sometimes when he was crazy and scared but glad I was there just the same, and sure as fuck felt like someone had my heart in their fist and was squeezing.
and then there's the ex-villain story which is probably my main squeeze as far as original fiction goes right now even if I've been stalled for a while because Worldbuilding Is My Nemesis and I need to do kind of a lot of it. this one was born out of my redemption equals death bugbear and how I love stories about people who have done awful things who then have to try to live with them, especially when they don't really want to live with them but they're kind of stuck with it. so my main character (kazem, @portraitoftheoddity actually made art of him here) is basically the Dark Lord of his world (or, well, he was, up until the local hero managed to beat him/talk him into beating himself) and the story takes place three years later when he is in a depression pit with no idea what to do with himself. also featuring:
a very angry mess of a woman whose sister died as a result of kazem's bad stuff;
another very angry woman who's my main antagonist because of some stuff in the hero's past (because i'm obsessed with hero figures who create their own villains) but i'm going to have a really hard time not rehabilitating her (only my problem is that she would rather die than give up on revenge, so);
said hero character who is basically acting as kazem's sponsor but is more of a fuckup than he looks at first blush;
and I really like it in concept and what I have so far in execution (again, a couple thousand words) but Worldbuilding, My Nemesis keeps getting in my way.
anyway, a snippet:
On the third anniversary of his defeat, Kazem didn’t get out of bed. The first year he’d stayed out of the way of the celebrations out of a sense of propriety and because of the fact that he was still coughing up blood every time he tried standing for longer than thirty seconds at a time. The second year he tried attending, thinking that he should pay his respects, show some sort of regret or remorse or...something.  He’d nearly gotten himself hanged.  So the third year, he woke up in the morning and stared at the ceiling, and made the very deliberate decision that today he was just going to...not. The sound of the celebrations outside drifted through the window of his dismal current abode, and he tried to shut it out. He was vaguely aware that he was indulging in self pity, but could not quite bring himself to care.  He could stay here feeling sorry for himself for the next three days if he damn well wanted to.

It's two forty-three in the morning when someone knocks at the door of Leonard's best hidden safehouse, where he's been lying low for a couple of weeks since the latest – failed, once again – attempt to draw out the Flash. It's the one place where he would have estimated the chance at getting visitors of any kind at under four percent.
And yet.
He's awake and alert in an instant, already reaching for the Cold Gun before the familiar knocking pattern registers. One soft knock – pause – three short raps in brief succession – pause – two slower, harder beats. Repeat. It's the same secret pattern he and Lisa have shared since she was a little girl sneaking to his room in the middle of the night, scared of Lewis' drunken raging downstairs.
Figures that it's Lise. She wasn't supposed to come to Central until he and Mick had taken care of their little Speedster problem, but she's never liked being told what to do, especially when it meant missing out on some excitement. In a way, she's even more addicted to thrill than Mick. Makes it too damn hard to protect her.
He pulls open the door with a scowl on his face. "I thought I told you to—"
The reprimand stops short.
The figure standing on his doorstep is— not Lisa. Six foot tall, slim build, somewhat unruly brown hair. Looks like a college boy who took a walk on the wrong side of town and accidentally ended up on Leonard's doorstep. Except Leonard doesn't trust accidents like that.

Art I made for my fantasy book The Day My Dream Died about a young woman who lives in a world where some people can access a dream realm called the undermind which reflects humanity’s perception of reality. The undermind also breeds dark creatures called fiends which feed on the thoughts and emotions of people. The people who can access the undermind are known as dwellers, and are often relied upon by the people around them to protect, defend and heal those touched by fiends the way a healer wards off disease and helps close wounds. Some societies are more or less proactive in upholding a practice of this tendency, and the view of what it means to have access to the undermind can be starkly different from one culture to another.

Our protagonist, a young woman named Lise, is pursuing her sister who has fled home under the influence of fiends. The problem is, her sister’s fiends seem to have become contagious and spread in the towns she has passed through. Lise finds herself overwhelmed with the number of people dead and dying in her sister’s wake and struggles to catch up in the midst of the terrible chaos. The fiends are devouring people at a rate unseen in recent history. Lise wants to do more than merely survive but even her survival is starting to seem dubious in the face of the fiends’ new developments.

The world this story takes place on is known by many of its peoples as Komalle. It is a planet whose life may seem a little surreal, owing to the fact that a single, full day/night cycle takes longer to finish than 400 of our days and nights. They count days like we count years. Broken into 4 quadrants of 10 weeks of 10 cycles of 10 hours of 100 minutes of 100 seconds. Lise is 18 nights old at the beginning of her journey, the rough equivalent of 23 years old in our world.

Something darker, a spot of perfect darkness, resides behind the mind of Lise. An inherited illness her mother had which she knows only as NON beckons her into a stasis near death. Something deeper than comatose, an undeath, which had plagued her mother throughout her life. For much of Lise’s childhood her mother lay in a cool, near death state. It happened upon Lise herself in her adolescence and she fears how a part of her yearns to return to it and remain in it forever.

tip of the iceberg for u my little tiny captains 🦔 🫡 welcome to a new world
I will end up reinvesting most of whatever I make into the art because that’s basically all I want to do in life anyway. Trying to do a lot with a little here, of course, and I’ll always seek to do more with whatever I have within my grasp. I have pretty severe chronic pain so I’m well accustomed to trying to accomplish a lot within certain limits. I think this project is pretty ambitious for a one person show but when the material is accumulated for everyone to see and all is said and done I think this will really be a great fantasy epic for the ages. It’s got my flair for the distorted and surreal but ultimately wondrous. It is epic adventure and horror and mental anguish and beautiful cursed trees and death and life and other assorted especially cool and radical fantasy psychicologicalphilosophickeries as they say. Please check the story out for free and let me know what you liked or loved. I share new chapters every couple weeks sort of staggered out as I have few readers latching on yet/caught up to what’s already out. Anyway, enjoy!
ART, FOOL! ART!
