Cabin Pressure Advent Day 23: Wokingham

WOKINGHAMMMMMMMM!

I absolutely love everything about this episode. Literally everything. It's just basically perfect.

It's also, like Vaduz, an episode that would never, ever, EVER have happened in S1. I mean, S1 had a dude literally die on the plane and "it "what to do" was turned into a comedy routine... this is a much more, Idunno, humanist approach, I guess. It's hilarious, but it takes its humor from things other than the actual medical situation itself.

But even beyond that- would S1 Douglas have played along when Carolyn said that he cried when confronted by the bird strike in St Petersburg? Would he have even put a pause on the game? Would he have even shown up? Almost definitely not. The only constant, of course, is Arthur, who would have been equally willing to show up to keep Martin's mother busy in any season you can name. Lovely, lovely Arthur, and what an absolutely perfect scene by the way.

Now, there's the meta way of looking at it where people are like "I appreciated it when JF was writing a darker and more cynical show," which a) I disagree with factually (I think there were always hints of what the show would become from the beginning- I mean, as far back as Abu Dhabi, Douglas helped Martin out with the match) and b) I disagree with as a matter of taste (the heartwarming episodes are GREAT). But I have to hope that the meta people at least concede that the development FROM S1 to S4 in terms of the very different ways that people behave is extremely consistent with the character development. Douglas and Carolyn have both made some strides in the way that they relate to Martin that allow them to go run interference for him, but at the same time Martin has grown to become the kind of person who they mind less running interference for. He's mellowed, he's started to be less hung up on his rank for the most part, he's less obsessed with his self image. S1 Douglas would have never done it- but S1 Martin would have given him little reason to, and we've seen that change pretty organically.

It also helps, obviously, that Douglas and Carolyn know exactly what they're dealing with. Some of it, maybe, is seeing how Martin (and, to be honest, Caitlin!) ended up that way, with Simon to cut him down to size- and, as we've heard, his dad as well back when he was alive. (Incidentally, I meant to mention this in Uskerty but I found the fact that Martin has worn his dad's signet ring since the funeral to be both really sweet and just... gah. Emotional.) I feel like we've also all, at some point, met people who are, if not Simons themselves, have Simonistic qualities, so to speak. Carolyn and Douglas, as people who love to put on performances like this and have a bit of a proprietary feeling about Martin (in an "only we get to tease him" kind of way), presumably did it at least partly for the fun of it!

That said, this episode would not have been what it could have been without Wendy. Prunella Scales is amazing, and it's worth noting that (as JF mentioned in a podcast interview I heard once) she was in the early stages of dementia and, according to JF, was not always with it offstage but was just absolutely astonishing as soon as they started performing. She plays every note so perfectly, and adds a really interesting note of, well, momness (or I guess I should say mumness) that is really easy to identify with and also a VERY striking contrast to Carolyn, both for better and, occasionally, for worse- Carolyn would have never said anything remotely like "maybe Simon knows best" lol.

All in all, just really really good fun, hilarious, well plotted, all the usual... oh, and with another amazing audio humor joke with the doctor asking about the costume party. Just perfect.

Important question though: how on earth in this whole brag-off with Simon did Martin never slip that he's dating the freaking Princess of Liechtenstein?! How?!?! I'm not going to call it a plot hole because that's not how these things work, but I can imagine that he had to REALLY hold himself back from blurting it out.

tagged by @aleng-neng. What are my fave top 9 shows in no particular order. (All of these I have at 10/10.) I'll only pick recent shows, as they're the ones I have listed on MyDramaList and thus have a ranking for. XD This means it's mostly bls and cdramas. 1. Moonlight Chicken.

One of my feelgood shows, even though it's still new. It feels comfortable and adult and grounded, with a bunch of amazing actors who are clearly comfortable with each other. As an 'older queer' it resonates with me a lot and I didn't dislike a single thing about it.

2. The Blood of Youth.

A really fun show with gorgeous, engaging characters and the right mix of beautiful scenery, beautiful people, and creative storytelling that I like. Sprinkle in some excellent fight scenes and a bunch of my favourite actors and I'm sold!

3. Old Fashion Cupcake.

I talked about mature stories earlier and this is another one of those. I could see myself in the main lead just a bit too much for me not to love this. Nozue recognizes that he's maybe stuck in a rut and complacent when he doesn't have to be. And, maybe, that handsome junior at the firm could help him get out of it (and make him recognize he's not straight).

4. KinnPorsche.

Look, I know it has its issues. I know. And I know people have an issue with some of the fandom. I get it and for the most part I agree. However, this was the first BL in a long time that I had the urge to write fic for. I enjoyed the complexity of the universe and the characters that much. (Even if some of it didn't make sense. but that's half the fun!) And that's why I like it. It got my brain involved. (And I just adore Tankhun, okay.)

5. Word of Honor.

Years ago I watched a few cdramas and then...somehow forgot about them? (I don't know how I did that.) However, back in 2019 I got back into them and eventually stumbled upon The Untamed. 'This is the pinnacle of cdrama for me and my tastes!' I thought. But then Word of Honor showed up. Look, everything about this show is stunning. The story, the characters, the setting, the clear and unadulterated love between the two main characters. Everything and everyone is beautiful and I've never gone through a cdrama as fast as I did this one. It's beautiful in ever sense of the word. And so, so queer. Don't believe me? Just search 'word of honor cdrama' in the gif section on tumblr and marvel at the art.

6. A Tale of Thousand Stars.

This is not the first Thai BL I watched, but it almost feels like it? Because ATOTS is the first one I remember going crazy about (and it set me on the road to basically loving everything EarthMix are in together). I was super invested and wanted to draw art and everything. It's just such a nice, soft, romantic story and the characters are so fun. This is probably the one I've rewatched the most.

7. Semantic Error.

As you can tell, I generally like stories that feel far away from home. I like magic and fantasy and settings that aren't typical. However, this is one of the few exceptions. I think it's the characters and their journey and the perfect execution of tropes that would have felt stale in any other show. It's a fun story with excellent characters and I get why it's so popular.

8. Mysterious Lotus Casebook.

Technically, I can't say this show is 10/10 yet because it still has a bunch of episodes to go. However, I can tell it's going to get close at least. (And will probably get to 10.) I keep comparing it to a perfect blend of The Blood of Youth and A League of Nobleman, in that it's a fantasy world with a master swordsman who's dying (and begrudgingly adopts a cute puppy who loves him) and a bunch of cases that need solving (to unravel the overarching plot). It's so much fun and the settings + characters are so beautiful. (And I may or may not heavily ship the loyal, eager puppy with the stoic, lying dying man who tries to push him away (and literally abandon him) in an attempt to keep him safe (from harm and heartache).) The hurt/comfort and love against all odds is strong in this one! He gave up his lifelong dream to protect a man who's been lying to him ever since they met and whom is at that point a wanted fugitive!! Because he trusts and loves him so. Also, it has a bunch of very handsome and gorgeous actors/characters in it, whom I love (and who suffer beautifully).

9. ??? I only have 8 shows that I've given 10/10 to (or a prospective 10/10, lol), so I'll just leave you with some other recommended shows that came close! Bad Buddy

Ranking (bullying) LD Curtain's season 2 fashion choices

Because even if the show seems to have forgiven him, I sure haven’t. 

DISCLAIMER: This is in NO WAY criticizing the costume designers of this show- it couldn’t be farther from that. They’ve done an amazing job with every single piece in the show, and all of these fit Curtain’s personality and aesthetic perfectly. This is just me mocking the in-universe fashion choices that the character makes, because he needs to be bullied more. All lighthearted, all in good fun.

Disclaimer #2: I know literally nothing about fashion, please don’t attack me. 

Okay, from least heinous to most heinous, here we go! 

First up:

As much as it pains me to admit this. I actually. Really like this one. (”And if you told me I would never say something like that, well, I would never say something like that, but here we are.”) I think the silhouette is interesting, and all of the pieces come together well. Plus, in some of the tighter shots you can see that the fabric texture and detailing is really cool:

The leaves as clasps and that crinkly texture kind of really slap, and I really love the way the collar sort of wraps into the placket.

Interview outfit:

Wow, look! Another one that doesn't inspire immediate feelings of rage! We're doing so well.

This one isn't as visually interesting as the first outfit, but I do sort of like it. The collar folds create kind of a cool shape, and the grey accents under the top is a nice little contrast. I don't know how I feel about the zipper right below the collar, it's kind of a weird choice and might look better if it wasn't so visible, but I'll let it slide for this one since we have a much more heinous zipper situation coming up later.

I like the contrasting shades of blue with the button up shirt, and the lavender shirt he wears under it later in the episode, and the fact that part of the collar can kind of fold down to make a different shape.

Clown sleeves:

So the sleeves on this one are. kind of a lot. But they gain a couple of points for being the only thing in this outfit that really pops. They're sort of weird, but I can see the appeal of them standing out against the black vest, and being a pretty nice contrast that draws the eye.

On someone else I might like this outfit, but on him it just looks so dumb. He looks like he's about to go skydiving with how much he's buttoned up. Better watch out or he could get carried away and spend 20 minutes unstrapping and unbuttoning it to reveal his fun little vacation shirt underneath! It's somehow stupidly formal and stupidly casual at the same time, and I just think it's a very silly little outfit. He's joining the army as penance for his fashion crimes. If you ask very very nicely he might tell you what's in his four huge, weirdly-placed pockets.

The worst of the worst:

I'll be honest, I don't really know where to start this one. There are too many things to choose from. Do I start with the weird asymmetrical pattern on the sleeves, with the red and blue stripes that aren't even made up of the same type of pattern?

Or maybe the fact that the buttons (and the piece of fabric they're attached to) ends too high above the neckline of the top layer?

Or we could talk about the fact that the top layer looks like one of those smocks you'd wear to get an x-ray at the dentist, made in a fabric that must have been rescued from the back of a fabric store after 50 years of not being bought.

I think by far the worst part is the length:

The fact that those strange little smock flaps go almost a foot past the zipper, halfway down to his knees. It swallows like 2/3rds of his body in this horrible block of grey fabric, and this man has the audacity to carry himself like it’s fashionable, instead of an assault on the senses. 

I want to set it on fire. I want to burn him along with it. I want to gently take his tailor aside and ask if Curtain held him at knife point and made him design this monstrosity. TEAR IT TO PIECES, GET IT OUT OF MY SIGHT, TURN IT INTO SCRAPS FOR SQ'S ART PROJECTS.

#6 Avengers 1

Welcome back for my #6! I'm so glad you're still here!

So obviously by the title, my #6 ranked is Avengers 1 and I will be explaining why that is, so keep reading :)

So this movie was my all-time favourite movie growing up. I vividly remember seeing it in theatres with my whole family as my birthday gift. So, just for that, it gets bonus points. But, not only does it hold great memories for me, that's not the reason I love it so much. It genuinely is such a great movie. Great characters, great plot, great humour, and is literally the baseline for all future Avengers movies.

So, I know a lot of people either don't remember the plot of this movie or simply have never seen it. So let me break it down, without spoiling... don't worry, I would never ;)

So basically, Nick Fury, director of "Agents of Shield" recruits 6 highly skilled and trained people and activates the "Avengers initiative". He gets, Natasha Romanoff (Black Widow), Bruce Banner (Hulk), Tony Stark (Iron Man), Steve Rogers (Captain America), Clint Barton (Hawk Eye) and Thor to work as a team to retrieve the Tesseract, which harnesses the most power known to man, from Loki.

So now, that you understand the base of the movie, you can clearly see how it already seems intriguing. From the amazing heroes, to my personal favourite villain, and everything in between, this movie comes together so well.

I'm gonna start off with why I love the heroes so much, particularly in this movie. So, these 6 people, are the original Avengers. Throughout the movie, they go through their ups and downs as a team. They strongly dislike one and other and can't seem to figure it out. Therefore, failing their mission multiple times in the movie, just because they're careless towards each other. Along the way, they realize that the only way to defeat Loki, is to work together and put together a proper plan to out smart him. I love this because it really shows how powerful teamwork really is. As for me, I've always played team sports, so I've experienced many times in my life that you can't do it all on your own. No matter how mad we could be at each other, it's important to come together to out smart the other team. So the message the Avengers portrayed has a deep meaning to me personally. Especially, because at the end of the movie, they realized that they want to continue to work together because they will be able to change the world.

To continue, I love Loki as the villain. That is probably one of the most controversial things I could say, so don't come at me. But whatever, he is. He is one of the smartest ones, he knows how to manipulate almost anyone, he's very sneaky and smooth with his getaways, and he somehow will always manage to trick me. Also, because he is Thors brother, they always go a little easier on him, so it gives him more room and opportunity to manipulate and escape, which always keeps things interesting. Lokis character in general is so fun to watch because he is so tricky with his words and gets in my head. He will always make himself the victim and play with the characters emotions and my own.

Furthermore, what makes this movie so great is the comedy. Like almost every Marvel movie, there are so many great jokes cracked in throughout. This one in particular because it's filled with the funniest and wittiest characters, like Thor, Loki, Tony, and occasionally Steve. My two favourite scenes are the ones when Hulk tosses Loki around like a rag doll and says "puny god" and one scene when he is against the wall with one of the aliens, and they just stare at each other, and he just punches him out of nowhere. My brother and I used to think that they were the most comical thing in the world. I remember almost every time I've seen this movie with my brother, and I can't help but smile every time I imagine them.

To conclude, I just love this movie so much, it brings back so many childhood memories, like my Avengers themed 7th birthday party inspired by this exact movie. The plot is so intense and very original, it brings together my favourite characters and creates the most powerful team in the world. The only reason I'd put this at #6 and not higher, is strictly on the CGI. This movie was made in 2012, so I understand, but now that I'm older, it's so easy to tell how fake it is, so it ruins it in the slightest way.

But overall, an amazing movie, it'll never get old, not even in 3000 days.... hehe, get it? Okay, I'll stop

Who are your favorite, top tier, iconic romance heroines?

Oh, love this! Of course, it changes from time to time.

I reeeeeally adore a lot of the IAD heroines, so I'm going to limit myself to two from their ranks, 10 heroines total.

Neomi Laress, Dark Needs at Night's Edge--A former burlesque dancer turned ballerina turned vengeful (and horny) ghost??? Tbh, the moment when I knew Neomi was a forever girl for me was when she was attempting to prove that Conrad could see her by doing a striptease for him while he desperately tried not to react. She's both fun and sweet and tragic and bitter. She's super gentle, and at the same time very sexually bold and borderline hedonistic. This is one of those books where I genuinely didn't know how there would be a happy ending even though I knew there had to be, and I was clutching my pearls.

Ellie Peirce, Lothaire--I've actually spoken to people who are reading this series and haven't read Lothaire yet, and they're so bummed because they know his Bride is a human... And I get that on paper, the Big Bad falling in love with a mortal girl sounds disappointing and cliche. But Ellie is SUCH an icon. Brash and defiant with a cunning streak a mile wide and a bone deep vulnerability. I love that she's tough as nails, while also having a really tender heart, even if she tries not to let him see it. Like, she's never afraid of getting her hands dirty if it'll save her life (how much do I love a heroine who sees that the villain hero is DESPERATELY horny and is like "I'll fuck my way out of this") but then you have scenes like her sobbing in his arms about the hopelessness of her situation, or her being genuinely really hurt and degraded by the way Lothaire treats her after sex.

Elayne/Elena, Shadowheart--A new favorite of mine, just a really gorgeous heroine with an amazing journey. She begins as this very innocent, sheltered girl with no concept of her true importance, and she develops into this natural political mind who makes some truly tough decisions. I'm a sucker for books where the heroine is a with a Bad Man who mentors her in his evil ways (see: Lothaire lol) and this is a perfect example. Allegreto literally teaches Elayne to be his undoing, and I don't know exactly how aware he is. Also, Elayne's discovery of her sexuality and what she wants from him is so, so good. Like, her being all "UMMMM I WANNA PRETEND YOU'RE MY CAPTIVE PRISONER AND FUCK YOU WHILE YOU HANG FROM THE CEILING *hides face*" is so... weirdly.... cute? I love her.

Nellie Young, The Duke Gets Even--I loved Nellie before she got her own book, and I loved her even more after. She really gets a very "hero" type story. She's seductive and can't get any closer to a man than what a casual fling provides. She's rebellious and breaks the law for what she believes in. She has a deep-seated pain and woundedness she wants to hide from Lockwood so badly. Nellie is a true female rake and she's executed so well. The moments when you can hear her internal screaming as she realizes she's in love? Adore her. Also, would for sure recommend this book to people who are a fan of Megara from Hercules, now that I think about it.

Isabel Beckinhall, Thief of Shadows--She's beauty, she's grace, she picks up grievously injured men from the street and strips them down to tend to their wounds and makes them rock hard. I love that Isabel is shamelessly sexual, I love that she withholds herself from the kid she's caring for (her dead husband's illegitimate son, at that) because she doesn't want to let herself care; I love that she's so naturally caring and bighearted, but has been hurt so many times she can't bear to let on. Her breakdown about her past is such an achingly sad moment, but she has such strength and resolve. Winter gets a lot of attention for this book, and rightfully so, but Isabel is a fabulously done heroine; the ideal "refined lady getting seduced by the masked vigilante", but flipped in her superior experience, her jadedness contrasting with her desire to feel alive again. Also, she absolutely blew that boy's mind. In many ways.

Hester Wyatt, Indigo--I call Indigo one of my favorite rake/virgin romances, which I don't think a lot of people expect when they hear about the book at first. Indigo does have a very emotionally heavy plot (and it's also very fun and adventurous) but there's also a classic "quiet and practical virgin blossoms under the affections of a ladykiller in love" plot. Hester has been through so much, and she's a lot older than her years, and she stands up for what she believes in with such quiet passion... And I kind of love that, for all that there is a big Plot Plot, there's also this evolution of Hester and her ability to accept pleasure and joy. I also just really love her "oh FUCK" realization when the big Gesture is happening.

Gia Mancini, Mafia Madman--YEEEEEEEEEEEEAH BITCH!!!! Gia is a big favorite of mine, because she is such. Such. SUCH. A bratty heroine. I love the contrast of Frankie falling in love so quickly despite her attempt to put up a fight with Fausto, to Gia genuinely being like "I am going to fuck. This. Man. UP." with Enzo. She's so angry (rightfully so) and bitchy (very rightfully so). How can I not adore a heroine who gets kidnapped by a loony tunes hero and locked in a cage... realizes he's watching her through cameras... and does naked yoga...? That's icon behavior. Also, trying to escape a yacht by grabbing a couch cushion and jumping into the ocean. It's no wonder Enzo fell so hard.

Sara Fielding, Dreaming of You--I will go to the mat for Sara. I adore this bitch. Shoots a man dead within... what? The first 5-10 pages of the book? Is like "oh fuck; oh shit; whoops" before sizing up Derek Craven and asking him to let her shadow him at his club like he's a fucking goblin king and she's owed a favor for saving his life??? Gets so horny she would've let him take her virginity on like? A COUCH? AT A PARTY? Honestly, Sara is a total chaos agent. It's no wonder he's in tears over her at the end.

Lennix Hunter, The Kingmaker/Rebel King--Such a GREAT heroine. You get everything from her. The "don't call me kid, don't call me baby" anger, the activism and passionate beliefs, the brokenness and determination to keep going. Also, she's SUPER hot, it must be acknowledged. Never has it been more understandable for a hero to become absolutely obsessed with a woman.

Ling Suyin, The Dragon and the Pearl--I really love Suyin because she's so composed and seductive and knowing, while also having a truly innocent core. She doesn't want to fall in love, because she knows it will break her; but she can't resist. She's jaded beyond her years, she's cool, she has a deep desire to be loved and vulnerable. I find her very sweet and almost tragic? Everyone thinks she's a sly femme fatale, but she is in fact baby.

Like, my take on ChatGPT is just...it isn't glamorous, one way or another. But the people who borderline worship it are extremely annoying specifically *because* it isn't glamorous. I can at least get the fear-mongering more, especially since we DO have this phenomenon where something doesn't have to be *good*, it just needs to be *convincing* for people to use it over human beings. (See: Google translate.) I know that people are absolutely using it to, say, write books and stuff. (I think that a lot of the concerns re: fanfic don't...hold up as much as people think, like this so called wave of people plugging in hundreds of fanfics, just because anyone who's used ChatGPT knows there's a character limit. It could be they're using another one, but I think that a lot of people just enjoy stoking fandom's anxieties over this sort of thing.)

Basically my approach isn't "use ChatGPT religiously" or even "like ChatGPT"; it's more..."realistically understand what it is and isn't so you can frame your criticisms correctly instead of relying on a bunch of Tumblr posts by people who have ALSO never used it."

jihyo zone album review!!!

first off: i literally cried while ranking these. they all served and she is amazing. this is just my opinion, feel free to disagree! stream zone, support our girl zyo, im actually so addicted to this album already and she was barely born.

room - this song oh my gosh i feel like so many of these songs feel so nostalgic, this song reminds me of one of my favourite bands, the aces, and i feel like it just has that calm, indie kind of vibe, which is so stunning, and its so so beautiful with jihyo's deep vocals. it 100% feels like a retro indie kind of song, i can already picture the film camera and vintage clothing, like oh my gosh, it gets better each time i play it.

killin' me good - its so iconic. i can't. i love the instrumental in ways i have never loved an instrumental before; something about the synth kinda style keys just triggers the right part of my brain. again, the more chill style instrumental is HEAVEN when paired with her powerful vocals. she absolutely ate this up with those iconic vocals, i can't even. it's stunning. it's beautiful. it's the title track for a reason. jihyo, you absolutely served, the vocals, the choreo, visuals. everything is an 11/10. stop it, though, because i'm a chaeyoung bias, and you're actually fucking with my brain. go away. leave. please. but like, don't. because imma need 900 mini albums now, as well as all of those unreleased bsides.

wishing on you - i felt this was like the 'basics' of zone; it was THE chill bside and i can def see myself playing this when im getting ready in the mornings, its giving me a bit of iu kind of vibes, like bbibbi, but also feels a little bit red velvet, with the high vocals. i love this song so much because it almost feels like shes singing a duet with herself, because she has the contrast between her higher, sweeter voice, as well as her deeper voice, and it amazes me constantly that her vocal duality is that powerful, when she does the higher harmonies during the 'you, you, you, you' in the chorus, with her deeper adlibs, i ASCEND. stunning. chefs kiss. if songs were edible, i would've eaten the plate too.

talkin' about it - THIS SONG LITERALLY ATE UP JIHYOS VOCALS, the prechorus with her deep vocals??? im now in heaven. and the contrast between her rich vocals and then the 'mmh, mmh, mmh." it's like what i was saying before where its like she sings a duet with herself, because of her vocal duality, she constantly changes it up. it's such a powerful song. and the electronic instrumental reminds me of 'love foolish', which is such an iconic twice bside. this is so incredible, and her english pronunciation is also incredible. and the guitar in the prechorus reminds me of avicii's older songs (rest in peace). 24kgoldn gave me a jumpscare, did not see that coming lmao, but yk what, it's growing on me. he did well, but like, he was in a duet with the park jihyo; she's the moment, so she def outshined without meaning to, but it's okay, like, its her mini album and her song anyway. no hate to him, love him. but jihyo served so he could slay. i would've loved to see this with a strong, deep-voiced female rapper too, i feel like it would've been such a good combo, like imagine this with moonbyul, jessi or youngji, GASP i would pay such good money for that, it would've been absolutely chefs kiss.

closer - omg stop jihyo with the spanish style influence, I CANNOT. i'm actually obsessed with her bsides in this album; they're all really chill and i feel like have quite minimal instrumentals, meaning they really really let her strong vocals shine through. i feel like with itzy, the really bright, energetic bgm works well for them, since their music and vocal style is different, but for jihyo, because her vocals are so powerful, she needs the more simplified instrumentals to let them properly shine through, and i feel like that was really well done with this album, so a+ to their producers for making sure you did our jihyo justice with her iconic deep vocals.

nightmare - WHEN I SAW THIS LIVE DURING THEIR CONCERT I LITERALLY DIED, i feel like the j-line solo stages during their ready to be tour went viral, but jihyo and chaeyoung's vocal stages were ABSOLUTELY STUNNING. i'd seen all the other solos on instagram but i hadn't seen or heard jihyo's and it was gorgeous. it suits her vocals so beautifully, the deep, strong song, and the fact that she wrote it?? an icon. it would've ranked higher, but this is one of those songs where the recorded version doesn't do the live one justice. it's stunning, but since i've been blessed with the live version, i can't listen to this one without feeling like its a bit less powerful and raw.

don't wanna go back - i love it, its like kdrama vibes but also kind of like early 2000s, it sounds like something tlc would have eaten up back then. i do love jihyo with this song but i feel like it wouldve worked really well as a group song too? like i can see xg doing this as a bside. as every song in this album does, it ATE, but its the kind of song that i wouldnt search up and play, but i wouldn't ever skip it either if it came on when im shuffling music.

hi!! sorry for the late answer i have to consider a lot about this lmao. i apologize in advance because i'm bad with character rankings, so: this top 10 are not in any order, i limit myself on one character per series, and it's probably rly rly subjective and even then i'm still not sure so it's more like just a ten characters i love list :D

kim dokja (omniscient reader's viewpoint): character of all time, really. it's actually so hard to verbalize how much i love him but--someone who finds himself unlovable but loves with all his heart. i adore his dynamics with every single other character in orv and the writing utilized a very interesting first person pov in his stead. also he's a sad pathetic loser and that's why he's so perfect

takumi asa (ikoku nikki): a young girl who's just a girl--she's silly and outgoing and withdrawn and serious, she's trying her best to be the her that she wants to be. i just feel like she's written with so much empathy and care and it shows in how wonderful her character arc is so far 🥺🥺 i truly love her so much

iwakura mitsumi (skip to loafer): a girl with SO much dream and spirit, how can you not adore her!! overwhelmingly honest with herself and so emotionally intelligent anyone would be shamed. just such a refreshing character to see when we're talking abt a story of youth

natsume takahashi (natsume yuujinchou): you can literally feel his compassion from just reading/watching him he's just so 😭😭 the epitome of you need to choose to be kind yourself but it's only from others that you could get to know what kindness is in the first place. he has to learn to accept that he is loved first to properly love!! that's peak fiction!!

hinata shoyou (haikyuu): actual ball of sunshine and probably who made me end up loving outgoing characters lmao. infectious passion and just absolute masterful writing. haikyuu is just rly good but hinata's character arc is an all timer

sohma yuki (fruits basket): all he ever wants to be is to be kind and to be himself!! i feel like i need a read to get a proper grasp on him but his arc means so much to me. once again, learning to be loved to love

hild (vinland saga): i'm unreasonably attached to her and it's probably not stopping for a long time lol. how she parallels with the mc but is her own person, letting go of the grief and anger and relearning to believe in others. also i simply have the biggest crush on her

qi yan (clear and muddy loss of love): girlboss gaslighter, something is just so wrong with her. the conflicting feelings between revenge and lesbianism and everything else is just so good. a pathetic little meow meow with several successful assassinations under her belt

anonymous (shimanami tasogare): to live positively in isolation, to be alone but not lonely... they're the first one to taught me that it's possible. so much charm in just a short character arc

kodama sakuko (koisenu futari): she means so much to me!! straightforward and honest and always true to herself. very very amazing journey of self discovery i have never been so proud of a character!!

perhaps half of this would make no sense without the context that comes with the character's story but i hope this is decipherable lmao

#tldr i love characters who are inherently kind but still has to put an effort to show that kindness #especially when it comes to learning that they to are worthy of love and deserving of kindness #just. clenches fist. these kinda guys #that's why it ended up such a long post. sorry about that

Slightly more detailed responses below the cut, in the order in which I actually played them. With the exception of Scarlet, this is also basically in order of how long I spent playing each one, which I guess is pretty analogous to how much I enjoyed them.

Red. I played this when I was, like, 6, and the copy I had couldn't hold a save because the internal battery was dead. I never got very far in it because I literally could not turn off the GBA without losing all my progress. It still makes me nostalgic, though. Love the soundtrack, especially.

Silver. Also played this when I was 6 and also didn't get very far. I liked it, but I remember more about where I was when I played it than I remember about the game itself.

Soul Silver. I loved this game, and I'm still lowkey mad that I can't find my copy. This was the first game where I made it into the hall of fame.

Brilliant Diamond. Somehow, I skipped four generations, including the original Diamond & Pearl, so BD was my first introduction to the Sinnoh region. I feel like if I had played the originals, I probably would've hated BDSP even more, but as it stands, I'm pretty neutral towards them. I beat Cynthia, and then I kinda just didn't care anymore.

Legends Arceus. Amazing. S-tier Pokémon game. Probably the only Pokémon game where I've put in over 100 hours. Definitely the only one where I actually "caught 'em all".

Sword. Meh. Beat Leon, caught Zacian, stopped caring. It was fun starting out, especially since, as I mentioned, I skipped several generations, so a lot of the Pokémon were new to me, even though many of them had actually been introduced in earlier games.

Let's Go Eevee. Eevee's adorableness was not enough to save this game. Maybe I just don't like the Kanto region, but man, I did not care for this game much at all. My biggest complaint is still that it's a first party Nintendo game, and it doesn't support the Pro Controller.

Scarlet. I haven't played it any more since the last post I wrote about it, so you can just go read that to get my thoughts.

I have tried playing a few of the other games (specifically Blue, Leaf Green, Emerald, and Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team) but only on an emulator, and idk what it is, but I've never really been able to get into games when they're being emulated. I'd much rather play them on the original console, but with how expensive used copies of some of these games are, that isn't usually an option. So, like Scarlet, I haven't played them enough to really give them a proper review.

Okay so I just watched episode 5 and here's my review be warned it's not in order at all its literally just a stream of consciousness/rambling *clears throat*

- Love how I didn't even notice that the op didn't play until like halfway through the episode 💀 I was just that enraptured by Bachira the show 😌

- ISAGIIIII MY BABY I honestly need to talk more about him cause like I love my little mildly psychotic blueberry muffin 🥰

- I have a feeling that Isagi is gonna become an absolute beast as the story progresses because being able to access the entire battlefield is such an amazing and op skill like asjrdhfdhf and I KNOW this boy is a monster so he'll probably find a way to enhance it and I for one can't wait to see it

- I love how he was the lowest ranking and then became the highest-ranking person in the span of a few episodes but I love how it's not rushed or forced it just makes sense you know?

- And at first, I thought it was gonna be Kunigami (I love this teddy bear of a man so much, especially after episode 4) because he was the one to score the first and only goal in their last match, but then I realized that like seriously without Isagi it wouldn't have even been possible

- And I love love love love how he's the team's “one” now. Like I said it was gonna be Kunigami at first, but nope. They follow him and aim to be his rival/beat him and that just goes to show how he's already changing as a player. I'm so proud of him. 

- It's really interesting how his “monster” and ambition to become the greatest really contrast with his personality. Isagi in general is sweet and polite and quiet-mannered. When he's playing his best on the field, he's aggressive, selfish, and unyielding. A completely loose canon. For rn at least. I can't wait to see how these contrasts continue in the series. That spacial awareness shot with Isagi looming over the field with those intense eyes contrasting him sitting all tiny and cute beside Chigiri is a great example to prove my point. 

- Chigiris's injury really shocked me cause like how are you gonna participate in Blue Lock and become the greatest striker with the constant risk of losing your entire career before even being disqualified. And I'm really worried that it might be why he gets disqualified. But then I heard his reasoning. And. I. Call. Bullshit. I'm with Isag on this one. I think that instead of Chigiri looking for a reason to quit, he's actually looking for a reason to keep playing and he doesn't know that yet because it's a selfish wish he's hidden deep inside himself. But luckily for him he has colored hair, the mc took particular interest in him, and this is Blue Lock. Like hell Ego is gonna let any of them give up so easily when they all have so much potential.

- ALSO, I love how Isagis victory was portrayed. Just cold and solid and unyielding. And he enjoyed it. He enjoyed looking into the eyes of his defeated opponents. It sent chills down my spine and I can't wait to see his character development. And I knew I would love his character from the beginning because a character that starts their story from the bottom truly always has the best character development. 

- Not related to the episode, but I can't wait to see everyone's development. I already know who gonna last longer and remain solid side characters for a while. Call it observation and intuition. Here is my list in no particular order. Isagi (obv), Bachira (my baby ❤️), Kunigami (the teddy bear 🧸), and Chigiri (he's so freaking pretty like the heck). As much as I'm liking the others, I don't think they're going to last long. And thankfully this show isn't like Haulyuu in the aspect that you get to know almost every character on a personal level and then see them lose and never see them again. I don’t think I could take doing that again with this show 💀.

- Also, I love how even though it’s survival of the fittest and there can be only one winner, all of them are still bonding (except Chigiri but I’m sure he’ll come around because of Isagi) and getting to know each other. It's really adorable how each goal, no matter who made it, is still a team victory. I'm glad that they're still getting along and still getting to act like teenage boys together. 

- I already had a ship the first episode asshdgshfdhj 💀💀 but can you really blame me? It's a sports anime, they're all literally so gay. Anyways it’s Isagi x Bachira because give me the rivals-to-friends-to-lovers RN. Idk it's just something abt the friends-to-lovers trope that always hits for me and it's by far with no competition my favorite romance trope of all time. These two are the personification of leash bf x caretaker bf aehfsjfsgf. And I can't wait to see how many emotional moments they have together. Their syncing nearly every match has made me go “ASFAHDGSJGDSJGDSHGD OH MY GOD YESSSSSS” every single time without fail. This ship has already dug its claws into me. I'm so screwed lol. 

- I have seen so many pictures of and read so many x reader fics of new upcoming characters and I am so ready to meet them and fall in love with them (or hate them but that's rare) and analyze them. I wanna see the difference between the fandom versions of them that I've read so far and their canon versions, I like to think I'm pretty good at differentiating between the two versions. Again, I have avoided the heck out of spoilers but I'm particularly looking forward to meeting/getting to know Itoshi Sae (why are the red-head characters always so hot I can't AND THE TURQUOISE EYES KILL ME WHY DONT YOU UGH) a character named Rin (I’ve heard he's quite the favorite in the fandom also very much a tsundere and emotionally constipated so I am very excited to analyze this one), Oliver Aiku (I heard he's a playboy with many red flags and at first I was ohhh kay so not falling for that one but then I heard he has hair highlights like Bachira and heteromeric eyes and I shut up real quick, guess we shall see) and Reo (purple hair and tongue blep make me go heart eyes, again reminding me of Bachira, I love Bachira okay leave me alone HE FREAKING CHOSE A DOLPHIN AS HIS TOOTHBRUSH MARK I CANNOT HES TOO CUTE). 

Anyways I think that's it can't wait to watch the next episode. This show is bringing back my sports side that I developed from Haikyuu and that's partially really terrifying because I know that means I'm already unconsciously invested. But also it's probably a good thing that I'm already invested now with Tokyo Revengers ending, so like I am in desperate need of an emotional rollercoaster of a show to cope.

I'm really looking forward to seeing Rin and Aiku (are we even surprised atp?) Yeah i totally get it. Like when it comes to bllk people have a hard time understanding the manga at times especially since the whole thing is centered around being 'devoured'; but its more like completely annihilating a person, crushing their place on the field and establishing dominance (istg ego is gonna send everyone to therapy) and its not forced; its keeping good pace with the flow of the plot

Oh yeah!! Kunigami and his left kick! I love the small conversation between him and Isagi that follows after when they're sharing a meal together ଘ(੭ˊᵕˋ)੭ ੈ Isagi is what holds the team together even going ahead it is like that and it gets interesting when he joins Bastard munchen (i am hellbent on giving spoilers today ◝(ᵔᵕᵔ)◜)

As for Chigiri; I know that he had an acl and there's a whole backstory to it as well but acl injury or rather any injury to the knee is dangerous and it can be stuck with you for life so I can understand where he comes from but at the same time he doesn't want that to repeat cause football is what caused him that injury, but Isagi is right. He can't let that one injury hold back his potential and he is pretty! Mans got a whole routine for his hair (つ﹏⊂) princess chigiri (they literally call him that later)

I don't ship characters together for some reason...? Unless its like super obvious like Victor and Yuri; I'm not trying to start anything here, people can ship whoever they want and all, but it went overboard with the bnha fandom with everyone harassing the author himself to make their ships sail; meanwhile I'm doing selfships and pairing people with their fav characters (Ｔ▽Ｔ) and I love doing it as well Itoshi Sae huh? I see your point though cause ngl red hair and blue eyes are definitely something like Vulcan from fire force :

Least favorites

Sesshomaru (Inuyasha)

I didn't actually finish Inuyasha but I know the gist of it. I love his design and I find his journey as a character interesting. Sesshomaru is a villain that eventually becomes a reluctant ally, I watched Inuyasha as a teen and at that time media kept bombarding us with villains that kept getting redeemed at the end so watching Sesshomaru never actually getting redeemed was a breath of fresh air. Boy, it's so funny to see the struggle of the main characters in trusting him bc he never showed that he could be trusted and most of the times he helped it was bc it was convenient for him to do so.

Starfire (Teen Titans cartoon)

Listen. The soft girl archetype is not my thing but I?? love her sm??? For the soft girl of the group, she never becomes the go-to-damsel in distress (everyone gets to be saved one way or the other by their teammates at some point) and the show never makes her kindness into a weakness but rather into a strength which is highly appreciated. I guess my only issue is the design they went for her, I wished her hair was wavy or curly like in the comics for ex.

Alucard Tepes (Castlevania Netflix)

Pretty boy? Check. Long hair? Check. Vampire (dhampir actually)? Check. Queer? Check. Daddy issues? Check. Traumatized? Check. Craves for love but is stoic himself? Check. Alucard basically checks all the boxes to be my favorite and yet his writing and development makes him be in this section. I hope the spin off does him justice.

Neutral favorites

Peter Parker / Spiderman

Not much of a fan of the movies, but I grew up with him as my favorite superhero with cartoons like The Spectacular Spiderman (kinda sad it got cancelled), I also enjoyed him on Ultimate Spiderman (bc he acts like a total lunatic and I love it) and I love Peter B. Parker from Into the Spider verse, he becomes a reluctant father figure to Miles and it's amazing. Overall I think he's biggest charm is how relatable he is to us kids who grew up marginalized by our peers.

Mikaela Hyakuya (Seraph of the End)

I'm too biased towards him, okay? He's my little baby, literally the only reason I haven't dropped the manga yet. Is he well written? No. Do I still love him? Absolutely. Same reasons as Alucard but with a few more layers to it.

Wanda Maximoff (MCU)

Look, this is the only version I've been exposed to of the character, saying this bc I'm aware of people saying that mcu Wanda pales in comparison to comics Wanda. But I love her, ok? I would die for her. "But what if you were in-universe and she killed you?" Bro, I'll die in happiness if she was the one who killed me. I love her, I'm too much of a simp for her. The only issue I have is that she's not well written, I look at her and all I see is wasted potential, but oh well, Marvel Studios never cared about quality.

Absolute unchangeable favorites

Lapis lazuli (Steven Universe)

Steven Universe will always have a special place in my heart and Lapis lazuli has been my favorite character through the whole show. I related to her and her journey a lot. The writing uses her character to show PTSD; trauma and how the same traumatic event doesn't have the same effect on people; how the abuser/victim dynamic is not always the case on toxic relationships, sometimes the roles interchange constantly and they're both the abuser and the victim at the same time; how overcoming trauma isn't (always) lineal, most of the time is taking a step forward and two steps backwards. She had it bad but she persevered until she finally came on good terms with her situation and started to heal and I love her for it.

Kurama (Yu Yu Hakusho)

It's been like 15 years and I still love this guy, even more so as an adult. Yu Yu Hakusho is basically THE comfort show for me, seriously I have since watched the anime in spanish, english and japanese. I'm love with his background and journey, all main guys have great development but Kurama's development is the most subtle but still powerful. The thing about him is that he struggles between trying to be what his loved ones expect him to be and accept that he can't erase who he used to be and what he has done on his previous life. He has an identity crisis (not in the way most fans make it out to be though, it's not a personality issue) about who he used to be, who he is now and who he really wants to be.

Jason Todd (DC/Batman comics)

I love him, your honor. He's a walking tragedy and I love him for that. He's representations for those who grew up on poverty and resorted to stealing to survive, for those who are suffering in the shadow and people, who have the means to help, look away from and act like if they don't look at them they don't exist. He's character is cathartic for those victims that wished they could've stand up and fight back, for those who wished for justice to protect them but failed. I have my issues with his character and how is used, but since most DC characters are ruined from time to time bc of the writing I kinda look past it lol.

Okay- okay okay, this is probably going to be really long and I'm gonna start with DOOM (yes, both of them, both 2016 and Eternal and the DLCS for Eternal), and then move onto the entire Splatoon series (but focusing more heavily on 2 and its DLC since that one just... Got me man)

Warnings below for definite spoilers for DOOM 2016, DOOM Eternal, The Ancient Gods Part 1, The Ancient Gods Part 2, Splatoon 2, Splatoon 2 Octo Expansion

Okay so... With DOOM, just the everything? I hate gore and blood and all that nasty stuff usually but with DOOM it's... Different I guess? All the different weapons you get, and the fact you never have to reload?? I adore that so fucking much. Like and how it goes level by level, slowly giving you things while also feeling like everything's speeding past you, it's the perfect pace. And oh my gods, the soundtrack for them both goes so fucking hard, though I do personally prefer Eternals soundtrack they're both amazing. And the story it tells? How it goes beyond just The Slayer and saving Earth and all that? How every single demon is completely different from the last and how it consistently throws new mechanics at you? I love love love that.

I'm also going to touch on Eternal more here because I love the collectables and the secrets? How you get music that you can play and also all the toys? The Slayers room? It gives him so much more than just huge guts kill maim murder man because he got fucked over. The comics, the books, how it displays your weapons in your room? The broken mech that hangs in the station? Just the entire scenery is... It's incredible, it's so detailed and being able to see just how far it's come from when it first came out to now is... It blows my mind when I think about it too long.

And the DLCs for Eternal? The plot twist? The fact that everything led up to this if you go back and play it and all the little hints they left along the way that didn't mean anything if you haven't played the DLC yet I just... Wow. Wow man wow. Also just saying getting to finally fucking deck Samur? Oh I was thrilled to do that, absolutely delighted I love getting to bash his stupid fucking Seraphim head in over and over. And part 2? Where everyone just showed up to literally help you I had to put the controller down. In a good way because just... Oh it was the perfect ending, just everything about these DLCs was perfect. The very end of the game where they seal you back up? Man... Gets to me every fucking time without fail for a game that's on the surface funny haha kill game

Now for Splatoon... I didn't get a chance to play the first one unfortunately, though I've probably spent a good couple hours digging into it, though I don't know as much about it as I do Splatoon 2. For starters, the square? It's so detailed and thorough. How the TV's move with things on them, how there's players just chilling? I love all that. And that all the characters, at least NPCs all look different, and have such different backstories and personalities on top of all that.

I love the differences in Pearl and Marina. Looks, their personalities, their histories and backstories just all of it? I mean Marina was a fucking child soldier for the Octarian Army if I'm not mistaken. And Pearls dad is so fucking rich, and yes she's spoiled, but she's kind at the same time. They did a really good job balancing her out and I adore her color pallet. And it's the other little things around the game that really make it for me.

For a game with really simple and repetitive mechanics, it keeps you interested. Because it's not just turf wars. That not your thing? Go do salmon runs, or play one of their ranked battles! Personally I love splat zones. Or you just wanna be here for the story? Play hero mode! That too hard and you want a different branch of the story? Get the DLC.

The mem cakes, the fact that you could skip levels if they were too hard and still get the rewards from them, the fact that the train consistently refreshed with new passengers on it? Oh and dont forget the chat logs you got to see giving you even more story, alongside the fact that once you beat it you can actually play as an Octoling? And OH MY GODS THAT END FIGHT. The music, the setting, the everything got me so hard. I won't even lie I cried a little at it.

It's not just a game where you shoot either, all of the incredibly creative weapons, and how if you don't like the bomb or the special on that one weapon, you can find the same weapon, but with a different bomb and/or special? I love that so much. I also love how it's locked behind leveling, it makes leveling seem actually important and not just... Do it for bragging rights, which yes it's also that once you stop getting weapons at level 30 I believe, but you get what I'm getting at. And all of the clothes and the shoes and the hats you can put onto your little guy! Oh sometimes I just go in to mess around with that.

There's just so much to them both and I love them both dearly.

Saw people talking about things they've never done in warframe and wanted to list some of mine

20 things I've never done in the game as a legendary 3 player with over 3K hours:

1. Other than the quest I've never done one of Kahls missions. I remember reading about it before it was released. I anticipated it so much I literally counted down the days and when it dropped my reaction was pretty much "oh....." it just didn't excite me the way I thought it would. I love Kahl as a character, but his missions are probably the most anti fun thing to be implemented into the game. The only thing that could maybe persuade me into doing them one day is the ephemera, but I wouldn't count on it

2. Never attempted to fight the tridolons by myself. Am I capable? Yes, but eidolons in general don't interest me enough to want to fight all 3 of them without a team, especially after ranking up with Onkko and buying all the arcanes. I'm worn out and over it. Plus, the whole night cycle system is annoying and is another contributing factor. I don't like timed farming or having to try and remember while I'm busy with other things to check when it's night time and usually by the time I remember to check the day cycle is just starting. So, screw it. The eidolons as a whole are a pretty cool concept tho. I mean, giant sentients? They're like the titans of the plains. We're ants to them. The size difference is actually amazing and for someone who is megalophobic fighting them can be both equally terrifying and exciting. I just hate the way de decided to execute the whole thing. Makes it less desirable to do imo

3. Never reached the level cap. I do a lot of steel path endurance runs on Ani for fun, but it has never crossed my mind while in there to try and fight long enough to reach the cap. First, it takes a while to reach it and I don't have that much patience. Second, I don't trust that the game won't crash or my lan cable won't decide to randomly disconnect resulting in me loosing everything and third, I just don't see the point in doing so other than maybe the bragging rights that come with it. I do a few hours and then I dip and restart if I'm up to it

4. Never stayed long enough in the index to fight John Prodman. It only takes an hour, but I just really hate the index. I'm always ready to leave as soon as I spawn in and 9/10 people make the process more boring than it already is with all the rhinos running around hoarding points. Just green globes everywhere you look. I know why they do it, but it's not my preferred play style. I don't really care too much about efficiency, although often times the whole hoarding process makes the missiom longer than it should be anyway. I just want to have fun if I'm going to be there and GOD forbid you don't follow their plan. I've been cursed at so many times and have been witness to other players who are just trying to help being called slurs that I refused to go back in for a very long time. The index is more toxic than it is being on a try hard tridolon team. You're basically given no freedom to play. I'm not a bot and neither is anyone else on the squad. The most I'm willing to do if asked is to not roam the map if I'm the host. If people want to play by a certain strategy maybe they should consider using the recruiting chat instead of throwing temper tantrums like a little child. Meta mentality is an illness

5. Never gone past zone 8 in eso. Literally no point. I just rinse and repeat

6. Never manually put together a K-drive. I rarely use them to begin with, so I don't see a reason in trying to make one of my own. If and when I decide to use one I just use the infested one, bc it looks the coolest. No other K-drive aesthetic comes close to beating its design

7. Never attempted the conclave. Saw that it was pvp and said no, thanks. Pvp makes my anxiety levels shoot through the roof. Adrenaline runs so high I can't even concentrate. It's not fun to me and anxiety is something I already struggle with every waking minute of my life. No need to make it worse

8. I have never attempted to max out all the schools. I think I have 2 left. I tell myself to just get the farming over with, but I loose interest as soon as I go to buy the lenses. It's not a hard process. All I have to do is put a lense on Sayrn and farm eso or just simply do my usual things and my focus will build up over time, but I just can't be bothered for some reason

9. I do sabotage missions and find caches for fun, bc I'm a glutton for treasure hunting, but in all my 7 years of playing I've never gotten nitain as a reward

10. Aside from ranking them I've never equipped a hound or moa as a companion. Their designs are cool, but they don't serve that much purpose to me

11. I've never used a specter. Actually, never even built one

12. I have health restores (the ones that instantly restore all your health) in my gear wheel, but have never used one

13. Never built the smoking body ephemera, bc I can't be bothered to farm the ash piece I need. The circuit made it easier to obtain, but I don't care for it therfore I don't pay it any mind. If he's there for the week I'll never even know it

14. Never played with an incarnon weapon. I know how good they are, but they don't interest me right now. I don't care too much about power. I have weapons I like that get me through whatever I'm doing with no issues and I'm content with that for now

15. Anytime I need standing for my syndicates I just do whatever and let it gradually fill up instead of picking missions off the syndicate tab

16. Never used traps to capture a cephalon target. My focus and ability to follow their movements while scanning them is pretty good, so no need

17. Never picked a spy fissure even if it was the only mission in the tier I was wanting to run

18. Never said anything in the region chat. I just sit back and mind everybody's business

19. Never played the shawzin

20. Never subsumed all my base warframes. I only subsume them when I have a need for their abilities. There's no harm in just getting it all over with, but just like a few other things on this list, I couldn't be bothered
