i just had a thats so raven-esque vision of one time after the war when legolas and gimli are on Their Travels and they encounter none other than legolas’ old one-sided situationship tauriel. and he’s working his way through a catch-up session that’s family reunion level of awkward. he’s like “heyyyyy it’s been like a month (60 years) since i’ve seen you. how have you been since ummm. well. since that guy died. and my dad banished you.” and tauriel is like “well actually i’ve been great! just sort of living off the land. i visit rivendell sometimes that’s fun. i suppose besides The Grief i’m doing fine but i do miss the spiders sometimes. oh and no hard feelings about your dad banishing me by the way! i mean it was pretty fucked up but i don’t blame you for it.” and legolas is like “good, good………. yeah. the spiders.”

and then there’s a very long silence and tauriel is like “so………. care to introduce me to your friend?” and legolas (he’s absolutely 100% fucked and he knows it) is like “Um. Well. This is………. Gimli. Say Hi Gimli.” and gimli is like “hi i’m gimli. son of gloin and husband to legolas. pleasure to meet you my lady!” and legolas has to keep himself from exploding cartoonishly at the sheer >:3 face tauriel gives him before she’s like “wow husband? how novel for a dwarf and an elf to fall in love!” and it’s legolas’ worst day on middle earth and tauriel’s greatest. gimli and tauriel exchange phone numbers

Au in which the elves, or at least legolas and thranduil and such, don’t treat Gandalf like an old man, and more like an age mate(?).

Listen, we all know that gandalf isn’t actually an old man, that he’s a maia in disguise, but bc he take the form of an old man, people treat him in such a way you would treat an old man.

It really fucks with people’s perception, even the ones who know he’s not an old man in the traditional sense can’t help but treat him like an elderly person.

Except the elves, well, some of them.

Imagine legolas just mindlessly throwing supplies at gandalf during the quest the way he would at a fellow soldier and the rest of the questers feeling like there’s something distinctly not right about treating gandalf in a manner similar to a middle aged adult, but also knowing that gandalf is not actually an old man.

Legolas teasing and ribbing gandalf in such a way that’s not like mentor/mentee / adult/child, etc. But more like a pair of warriors on a scouting mission and it fucks with everyone else’s perception of reality so much because yes, but also no?!??

Just legolas treating gandalf less like the old man he pretends to be (and the minor god he is) and more like a same aged fellow warrior and it’s messing with everyone who has to witness it.

Anyone can participate! In 2023, you can sign up as a creator from Feb 6th to Feb 19th. Bidding on offered fanworks takes place from March 1st to March 5th.

How does it work?

Creators can offer any type of digital fanwork (fic, art, podfic, edits, fanvid etc.) or fan labor (beta reading, translation) for any fandoms, characters or ships of their choosing.

The offered fanworks are put up for auction, and bidders place bids on the works they're interested in. Bidding lasts for five days, and once time is up the highest bid on each fanwork wins! 

The winning bidders then donate the bid amount to one of the specified charity organizations. Once they provide proof of donation, they get to talk to the creator they bid on about the specifics of the fanwork. The creator then makes a brand new work based on the winner's wants! Yay!

Why should I participate?

honestly i get embarrassed i don't have like. a single other interest I'm as into because i just know everyone around me is probably sick of it

to the people who keep talking about rop’s bad script, tbh i found lotr’s script just as bad sometimes, there were so many lines that made me laugh/were unintentionally funny, and rop is the same occasionally, but what i think (???) it may have is a higher proportion of dialogue lines where people speak like NORMAL people, and that’s why so far rop is more my kind of thing than lotr was.

also, to the people who complain about rop’s slow pacing, do you actually remember lotr or do you see it through rose-tinted glasses now (e.g. that ending in rotk KILLED me)

sometimes i think about how we don’t actually use the hobbit characters real names (and probably more i haven’t done much of a deep dive),, like bilbo’s real name is bilba, we know this, it’s canon, we just call him the fake translation bilbo bc we see that version used throughout the books, ive seen one or two people in fic make their real names their real names in a fake “hobbitish” language and then have their fake names be “westron”-ized outer name versions like the dwarves do, which is a wonderful way to squeeze it in, but it’s a bit weird we never just use their real names, like yeah tolkien was basing it off of the translation style of his time, but it’s also a bit of a translation faux pas nowadays, so theoretically we should be using their real names if we’re in keeping with the evolution of translation standards, which is a very fun way of looking at it, a bit tempted to do some thorough research and make an “updated translation” version of the books, which is wholly unnecessary and no more than a fun novelty item type of thing, but it feels like the exact sort of nonsense tolkien would love, the main things that would change besides names would likely be some turns of phrase or minor words and proper nouns and such
