Marquayrol was Martin’s villa in southwestern France, overlooking the village of Labastide-du-Vert. Martin summered there each year having purchased the property in 1900.

In 1900, Martin acquired property in Labastide-du-Vert, a small village in France’s Midi-Pyrenées region. On the thirty acres of land stood a large seventeenth-century manor named Marquayrol, a place Martin would enjoy as a summer residence and the setting for many of his greatest pictures.

30/04. Étape 26 . St Cricq du gave - Arancou. Initialement je devais passer par Sorde l'abbaye et traverser le Gave d'Oloron mais le pont est en travaux depuis janvier pour une durée de 13 mois. Et les chemins entre st Cricq et Sourde semblent être en très mauvais état (source Naomie) donc pour ménager GG je vais faire du hors GR 655 et donc passer par Caresses et Labastide-Villefranche pour rejoindre Arancou ou je dors ce soir et donc récupérer le chemin. Dommage pour Sorde qui doit valoir le détour. Pour l'instant entre St Cricq et Caresses, très vallonné, vert, calme, c'est vrai nous sommes dimanche, un pur bonheur de progresser (évidemment en solo) dans cette campagne, accompagné par le chant des oiseaux. Je progresse par petits bonds , je ne dois pas arriver à Arancou avant 15h00. A tout à l'heure...

La façade d'une maison s'ouvre sur un jardin et une allée. La double porte de couleur verte est entrouverte, comme une invitation à pénétrer à l'intérieur, laissant libre cours à l'imagination du spectateur. Deux arbres et deux jarres encadrent de façon symétrique cette porte et rythment ce paysage luxuriant et paisible, dépourvu de présence humaine. Henri Martin étudie à l'École des Beaux-Arts de Toulouse avant de s'installer à Paris en 1879 où il devient l'élève du peintre académique Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). Après un voyage en Italie, l'artiste change totalement de style et s'oriente vers le divisionnisme des néo-impressionnistes mais d'une manière plus spontanée que théorisée : des touches courtes, séparées et parallèles construisent les formes et la lumière, dans un chromatisme idéalisé et propice au rêve.

The facade of a house opens onto a garden and path. The green double door is opened inwards, like an invitation to come deeper inside, giving free rein to the imagination of the viewer. Two trees and two pots symmetrically frame this door and give rhythm to this luxuriant and peaceful landscape. Henri Martin studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse before moving to Paris in 1879, where he became a student of the academic painter Jean-Paul Laurens (1838-1921). After a trip to Italy, the artist totally changed his style and turned himself towards the divisionism of the neo-impressionists, but in a manner more spontaneous than theoretical: short, separate and parallel gestures construct the shapes and the light, in an idealized color range conducive to dreams.
