Hello Tumblr!
Do you like bookstores? Do you like unions? Do you like bookstores having unions?
Answer yes to any of those questions, and boy howdy, do I have a call to action for you.
Half Price Books employees at several locations across the country have organized and, after months of being dehumanized by corporate lawyers, have finally reached the financial part of their contract! Hurray!
Except not hurray, because they are refusing to even budge on giving anything more than a pathetic 1% increase. And what’s worse, is the offer is actually a thinly veiled 6-7% pay cut, due to taking away quarterly bonuses that make up so much of the employees’ income.
There’s thankfully something you can do about it though! The unionized workers are partnered with UFCW, and they have made a website that has made it super easy to tell Half Price Books that you think their employees deserve a living wage.
The company has proven that it cares a great deal about its image, so any public support can give the bargaining employees a lot more power over their contracts. It only takes a couple minutes to fill out and any and all help is greatly appreciated.

"The Writers Guild has reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers to end its strike after nearly five months. The parties finalized the framework of the deal Sunday when they were able to untangle their stalemate over AI and writing room staffing levels.
“We have reached a tentative agreement on a new 2023 MBA, which is to say an agreement in principle on all deal points, subject to drafting final contract language,” the guild told members this evening in a release, which came just after sunset and the start of the Yom Kippur holiday that many had seen deadline to wrap up deal after five days of long negotiations...
Despite today’s welcome news, it still will take a few days for the strike to be officially over as the WGA West and WGA East proceed with their ratification process. During the WGA’s last strike in 2007-08, a tentative agreement was reached on the 96th day and it wasn’t over until the 100th...
All attention will now turn to ratifying the WGA deal and getting SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP back to the bargaining table to work out a deal to end the actors’ strike, which has now been going on for 70 days.
Details of the WGA’s tentative agreement haven’t been released yet but will be revealed by the guild in advance of the membership ratification votes. Pay raises and streaming residuals have been key issues for the guild, along with AI and writers room staffing levels."

Companies That Union-Bust Must Now Automatically Recognize Union, NLRB Rules
The National Labor Relations Board issued a ruling on Friday that changes the framework for unionizations, making it easier for workers to organize and harder for companies to fight back against them. The new process comes as part of a decision in the case between Cemex Construction Materials Pacific, LLC and the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, where the Board found that the employer had committed over 20 “instances of objectionable or unlawful misconduct” between the filing of the union election petition and the election itself, intending to dissuade workers from organizing.

Visual effects crews at Marvel Studios today filed for a unionization election with the National Labor Relations Board, with a supermajority of Marvel’s more than 50-worker crew having signed authorization cards saying they want to be represented by IATSE. “We are witnessing an unprecedented wave of solidarity that’s breaking down old barriers in the industry and proving we’re all in this fight together,” said IATSE President Matthew Loeb. “That doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Entertainment workers everywhere are sticking up for each other’s rights, that’s what our movement is all about. I congratulate these workers on taking this important step and using their collective voice.” According to the union, “this marks the first time VFX professionals have joined together to demand the same rights and protections as their unionized colleagues in the film industry.”

Trader Joe’s management has continued its intense union-busting tactics at every store that's filed for a union election and refuses to bargain in good faith with its workers. Meanwhile, Trader Joe’s crew members at stores across the country are unionizing to fight for the pay, benefits, and safe working conditions that match Trader Joe’s “progressive” image.
As Trader Joe’s management doubles down on union-busting ― we need to double down on our people power. One of the best ways to do this is when folks like you, Trader Joe’s customers, use the power of the purse to show Trader Joe’s you won’t shop there until it becomes a workplace that actually reflects the values they claim to have.
We haven’t asked customers to boycott Trader Joe’s, but as their union-busting attempts increase, we need to know how many customers will stand with us in the fight for a fair contract.
We’re asking folks to support Trader Joe’s United by signing on in solidarity and letting us know you’ll stand with us if we call for a customer strike! >>
