This picture started out with me looking for a reference for a study and practice with new techniques and tools, and then of coarse I find this amazing landscape piece I liked. And anytime I get the chance to put a character into a scene well, there you have it. So I guess you can say its derivative-ish? I technically don't have to site the reference since its free to use non-commercial and commercial without attribution but here it is anyway since hey, look at the difference, how I made it my own to a degree, and this could be a chance for self-analysis and critique.
Actually this is kind of funny that I live so close to this formation. :d I am biased I like Utah and Arizona's terrain.
Self Critique: If I had to change things in this image, I would do a coffee paint stain before laying the graphite wash down, for a sepia off-set. I think I would also try to keep the border more congruent since there are parts that are off like the gems, and some parts of the coloring and shading in the border could use more oomph. The character pose, I probably should have changed so that it wasn't so stiff. The reference person had their hands in their pockets. If I placed the arms and hands in a different pose it would have loosened the whole up. Perhaps even adding a sword in to help. I honestly almost want to redo this one and see how much better I can really make it. So perhaps in the future this will end up being a draw this again challenge.

Practice sketch with Bic Ball Point Pen. I’ve not drawn with these since I was in high school and it was a fun exercise to see if I could. The think about these types of pens, is they have a tendency to break and bleed, so you learn really fast how to use them to your advantage and how to make mistakes part of your work and disguise them. :d I would say its been a while since I’ve also free handed something, as I usually always set up proportions or block out my work, and with drawing straight to pen without sketching over pencil, you have to just go for it and be fearless.
