Day 5- Forbidden Love
Tumblr media
Obligatory Tags: @our-newdream @autumn-sundrop @seadrreams @the-writer1988
For today’s prompt I decided to do a small drabble! This takes place in an au where Eugene was pardoned, but isn’t allowed to date Rapunzel or be in the palace. For now at least, Frederic wants to try out a few suitors for Rapunzel. It was inspired by this particular concept art, because it’s really cute and I love it XD
~~~~~
“Let me guess, date with Prince Bradley didn’t go like you hoped?” Cassandra asked as she glanced down at the full cup of tea.
“Oh, nono, it was fine!” Rapunzel quickly reassured, “Well..until he called Pascal a salamander.” Ahhh, so that’s why he’d been red all day.
“Could be worse. Your dad could be setting you up with one of the princes from the Southern Isles.” Cass tried to cheer her up.
“I know, but I don’t want a prince from the southern isles. I don’t want any stuffy old prince.” Rapunzel replied, “They’re nice and all, but I….they just don’t understand me. And they’re WAY too interested in my hair. I keep telling them, it doesn’t heal anymore.”
Cassandra frowned, her heart breaking at her friend’s misery. She didn’t like this any more than Rapunzel did, but neither of them had any choice. Rapunzel had to find a suitable prince to marry, and Cassandra had to act like she was in full support of it.
“I just wish I could be with someone who loved me. Not the princess.” Rapunzel sighed, falling down onto her bed. Without even looking, she reached her hand under her pillow and pulled out a small flag. The flag Eugene bought her for her birthday. He’d given her the kindest smile when he handed it to her, and chuckled when she held it up to the light.
“It’s no lanterns, but any true devil may care rogue makes sure to get the birthday girl a present, Blondie.” She recalled him saying.
“Yeah I know, Raps.” Cassandra responded, “But…sometimes life doesn’t always work that wa-“
“Oh, Rapunzel! Let down your hair!” A familiar voice sang out.
“Lance! I told you not to sing!” They heard Eugene mutter. Cassandra and Rapunzel gave each other a look and headed outside to the balcony. To their surprise, they found a familiar pair of faces scaling the tower to Rapunzel’s room, bickering to each other about a dramatic entrance.
“Eugene! Lance!” Rapunzel cried out happily.
“And there’s the someone, right on cue.” Cassandra snarked, “Looks like he was preening a little extra today.”
“You know what Cassandra?” Eugene started to retort, but his voice died in his throat a little as he laid eyes on Rapunzel.
“Hey..” he whispered.
“Hi!” She chirped, her smile shining brighter than the sun. Eugene couldn’t help but find himself smiling back. She looked So beautiful with the sunset behind her like this, practicality bathing her in a halo of light. From up there she looked like an angel. That stunning dark purple dress that brought out her beautiful eyes. Those gorgeous freckles that perfectly painted her rosy cheeks. Short bubble sleeves like the one on that dress complimented her so well. She should wear them more often.
“What brings you and Lance out her?” Rapunzel asked.
“Damaging stone that’s hundreds of years old…and breaking into the palace…again.” Cassandra added dryly.
“Well a little birdie, or rather frog, told Eugene that you had a bad day.” Lance explained.
“So I brought a picnic!” Eugene announced. He moved his arm to grab the basket so he could show her, but then his arm flew right back to the arrow lodged in the wall as soon as he felt himself falling.
“And I’m here for musical ambience!” Lance announced proudly.
“And I’ve also got some candles too!” Eugene added, “And lanterns in case you wanted those instead of candles. But both are very romantic.”
“Exactly how long have you guys been scaling the wall like this with all this stuff?” Rapunzel asked.
“Uhhh….2 hours?” Eugene answered, “But don’t worry, my arms aren’t tired at all.”
Rapunzel barely stopped herself from giggling, “Do you want to climb my hair?”
“…Yes please, this is killing me.” Eugene finally whimpered, looking up at her like a kicked puppy. Rapunzel let the giggle out this time, and let her hair fall down from the balcony. Eugene quickly abandoned the arrows and grabbed on, now climbing much quicker. Rapunzel couldn’t help herself from leaning over the railing as Eugene finally made it to the balcony. Her heart soared as their eyes met and they smiled at each other. He must’ve gotten closer without her realizing, because before she knew it his lips were on hers. She giggled once more and happily kissed him back, her hands rising up to hold his face.
“Hey.” He purred when she pulled away.
“Hi…” she whispered, her cheeks flushing.
Lance chuckled to himself as he saw the scene, walking over to Cassandra as the two love birds pulled their picnic out.
“I doubt the King will ever approve of this.” Cassandra warned him quietly, “He’ll never allow them to be together.”
“Are you gonna say anything, goody two shoes?” Lance teased, but the twinkle in his eyes gave him away that he already knew the answer.
“I won’t say anything if you won’t.” Cassandra said anyway, “Besides, what they do when the king isn’t looking is their business.”
Fanart for Forbidden Love by @nerdasaurus1200
Tumblr media
∘⟡˖* Do not repost ∘⟡˖*
Obviously used the concept art featured in @nerdasaurus1200's original post as reference, as well as the literal wikipedia photo for facepalm to do Cass and some rock climbing videos for Lance xD
I loved that little story, it's so cute! Features most of my fave characters! Has that beautiful combination of serious politics, humour and beautiful new dream love!
Go check out their fic if you haven't!
Yeah. Just another piece of fanart for NDAW I guess. This one was honestly a lot easier cause I got a reference and obviously inspiration included with the fic!
Lance Strongbow Appreciation Week: Bonding with Rapunzel.
I’ve said it before; I’ll say it again: No Time Like The Past - time travel + Rapunzel and Lance bonding + new dream agreeing to disagree on Cass = potentially perfect episode.
The original draft I made was in bullet points, but to write in long, boring essay form:
(doing this in 3rd person because extraterrestrial aliens could write dialogue better than I)
Rapunzel starts the day like she always does: early and ready to get things done. She gets distracted when Lady Crowley appears to have moved all of Cass’s things out of her bedroom. Rapunzel protests against this and an annoyed Lady Crowley tells her to put her things back herself if she’s that insistent.
Eugene is hesitant to help (and Lance is just being goofy Lance) while Rapunzel reminisces over Cass’s old treasures. Eugene suggests that Rapunzel just let Cass go. Rapunzel responds insistently that friends don’t leave friends behind and Eugene sternly replies that Cass was the one who left her behind. Lance awkwardly finds himself in the middle of their exchange as Rapunzel solemnly takes a crate of Cass’s things up to her room.
(alternative episode: go!)
Rapunzel mopes in her room, looking through Cass’s treasures, remembering their good times together. As the minutes tick by, Rapunzel hears a knock at her door. It’s Lance. Rapunzel reluctantly lets Lance in and it appears that he’s brought some treats from Atilla & Monty’s bakery and some drinks with him. After offering some pastries, he tries to lighten the mood by cracking a few jokes with Rapunzel, but nothing seems to boost her mood. He then tells her some stories about him and Eugene as young thieves.
He shares his tales about them in the biggest and grandest fashion he can muster. Stories like their first big hiest with the Stabbingtons, beyond terrifying introduction to the Baron, daring escape from Eugene’s (almost) wedding with Stalyan, bizarre adventures in the circus and, reluctantly, a tragic incident regarding a broken window. Rapunzel listens in awe, engaged in all these fascinating adventures until the brink of dusk.
Through all these stories, Lance explains that Eugene has learned to be incredibly cautious of people, especially of “friends” who’ve betrayed him. Through a life of constantly being on the run and having to leave anyone or anything behind when necessary, it only makes sense for Eugene to be weary of Cass after her betrayal. Rapunzel rebuttals with the fact that Lance not only betrayed Eugene, but her as well. (The Return of Strongbow) However, since then, he’s only changed for the better and has been nothing but sweet and loving to all his friends and the citizens of Corona. Lance can only suggest that she go talk with Eugene and settle things out.
As Rapunzel goes to put Cass’s crate of treasures back, she’s surprised to see the room almost fully refurnished, with a perplexed Eugene trying to decide where to put Cass’s various trinkets. Eugene admits that he shouldn’t have been so harsh, but also states that he may not be able to forgive Cass after what she did to all of them, especially Rapunzel. However, he recalls his promise to be patient with her and at least make Cass’s room presentable if she ever decides to come back. Rapunzel apologizes for her dismissal to Eugene’s point of view and, thanks to Lance, can now understand where he’s coming from.
The three of them finish up furnishing the room by nightfall. Rapunzel and Eugene agree to disagree over their lost friend and finally make up. Lance finishes off the rest of his drink, knowing that he’s successfully prevented a potential crisis.
Lance Strongbow Appreciation Week Day 1 - Arnwaldo Schnitz
Arnwaldo is a difficult name for the children in the orphanage to pronounce. It gets shortened to ‘Arnie’ or ‘Waldo’ and he hates the sound of them both. Eugene had joked that the reason they were never adopted is because nobody wants a child named Eugene or Arnwaldo, and he’s inclined to agree. Arnwaldo Schnitz and Eugene Fitz(herbert) make a pact; they’ll leave their names for dead at the orphanage door, and the helpless people they used to be along with them.
Lance Strongbow is Flynn Rider’s best friend. It’s written in all the stories— the extravagant sidekick with shiploads of charisma and flair. Eugene has decreed himself Flynn; Arnwaldo becomes Lance. Lance rolls off the tongue, and isn’t shortened to anything. He’s in Flynn’s shadow most of the time, but that suits him just fine, despite his love for the limelight. Taking centre stage means dealing with the hecklers, and the hecklers in their line of business tend to be armed with knives. Flynn doesn’t begrudge him when he escapes through the back door, because they both know he’d do the same.
There’s honour among thieves, but there’s no chivalry among assholes.
When Lance meets Flynn again, it’s clear something in him has shifted, and something shifts in himself too. Honestly, loyalty, trust— these things are foreign to Flynn and Lance, but Eugene tries them on like his very own new three piece suit. Lance doesn’t wear it so well, but then again neither does Arnwaldo. Lance, he decides, can try to learn.
At first Eugene wanted him to follow in his footsteps and shed the charade, to finally stop wearing the mask of a folkloric rogue, but it’s not so easy for him. For one thing, he doesn’t have any princesses to rescue from towers and evil witches, who can hold his hand and reveal to him the error of his selfish ways. For another, Lance Strongbow isn’t the mask that Flynn Rider was. Lance isn’t trying to hide his heart of gold or play coy with his intentions; he wears his heart on his sleeve for all the world to see.
On a legal technicality, Kiera and Catalina pick up the surname Schnitz. Despite himself, they wear it well, but he still goes by Strongbow, and sometimes the girls do too; they enjoy their aliases, when it’s their choice to wear them. Arnwaldo, at the end of the day, is just a word. It’s a name like any other, even if it’s harder than most for children to pronounce. And what’s in a name? Arwnaldo Schnitz, Lance Strongbow, Lancy Perlson— they’re all synonyms for the same noun.
He remembers Anrwaldo Schnitz with fondness, the rotund little boy at the orphanage who paid ransom to the bigger kids and threw rocks through windows to vent the frustration. Although that memory will always be a part of him, it isn’t who he is anymore. Lance Strongbow had been the name he’d taken to emulate the person he’d wanted to be, and he knows Arnwaldo would be proud of who Lance has become.
Free Day
That’s right folks, it’s time for us to appreciate Lance Strongbow again! This time, he gets a week and a day instead of just a week! (Honestly, I figured it was just a nice way to round out the month.)
The above prompts are only suggestions, and you are not at all required to follow them. Remember to tag your posts @tangledbea and “#Lance Strongbow Appreciation Week” (no need to include the +1, since this is an annual thing). And yes, I did deliberately have the prompt involving Eugene land on FitzFriday. Two birds with one stone, eh?
Lance Strongbow Appreciation Week
By @tangledbea
Day 4: Bonding with Rapunzel (AO3)
He and princess were never close. He wasn't her fiance, like Eugene, nor his best friend like Cassandra. He wasn't her family, and, frankly, he didn't know exactly were did he stand with Rapunzel. Hell, even Varian had some kind of relationship with her, something like adoptive siblings. But he? He was neither her close friend, nor complete stranger.
He knew the princess saw him as a friend. She did that to most of the people she interacted on a daily basis and weren't her family or servants (Cassandra was an exception though). But he never really had any bonding moment with Rapunzel, nothing to make him feel they had this something between them. Whatever that was.
That's why he was surprised when she suddenly asked him to go with her to the market in another town.
Granted, Eugene's birthday were coming up soon and she needed his help in finding the right present. After all, he was the one who knew him the longest. Didn't change the fact he was now sitting awkwardly on a cart next to the princess, Max steadily pulling it towards their goal.
He should say something, break this awkward silence before it suffocates him. But any conversation starter he came up with sounded blunt and weird.
"So…" Rapunzel sounded to his right and he shot a glance at her.
She was playing with the hem of her skirt, fingers fiddling nervously. She looked sideways towards him and when she noticed him staring, they both looked away, embarrassed.
Way to go, Lance. You made it even more awkward than it already was.
Rapunzel chuckled and he stole a glance in her direction.
"This is awkward, isn't it?" She asked, rubbing the back of her neck.
"I'm sorry." He said before he could even stop himself. Her head shot up in surprise.
"For what?"
"I don't know." He shrugged. "I just-" He made a vague motion with his hand as if it would explain what he meant. It didn't. Not to her, and definitely not to him.
"Don't know what to say?" She asked and smiled a little. He smiled back.
"Yeah."
She nodded and stared up ahead. Her hand moved to pet Pascal perched on her shoulder.
"I messed up." She said, continuing before he had a chance to say anything. "You're Eugene's best friend and I barely talked to you. We spent the whole year on the road together, we fought Zhan Tiri, and all I know about you is you took your name from the book, just like Eugene, you're his friend from the orphanage, were a thief, are afraid of clowns and have a really good singing voice."
She ran a hand through her hair and sighed.
"This… I feel awful, because I should have talked to you sooner. I should have tried to get to know you better. And I'm sorry."
"No, no, Princess." Lance puts up his hands defensively. "It's okay."
"It's not." She insists and then smiles. "But that's also the reason I asked you to go with me. Apart from the fact you can help me find the perfect gift for Eugene."
"I… what?" He mumbles, stunned by the exclamation. He did not see that coming.
"Yeah. So…" She drums her hands on her knees and takes a breath. "What's your favourite food?"
"My favourite-" He laughs, bending forward. "Princess, with all due respect. One: that's a terrible conversation starter." She huffs in response but he cuts off anything she could reply by raising a finger. "And two: do you really expect me to choose only one?"
Rapunzel laughs and he joins in. The awkward silence is gone.
Lance smiles as he listens to the princess talking about how she used to sneak out every night on her birthday back in the tower to watch the lanterns.
Yes, they don't have this something between them. Not yet. But they are getting there
Lance Appreciation Week Day 4 - Bonding with Rapunzel (and Pascal)
“Come on, Lance, just one date! You don’t know that she isn’t the one!”
“I appreciate it, Rapunzel, but I think I can figure my romantic life out for myself,” Lance says, resting his hand on her shoulder. Nevermind that none of his romantic exploits have ever really worked out in his favour.
Faith just- well- isn’t his type.
Rapunzel tugged on his arm and continued to protest, and it was a challenge to keep his face neutral the longer she continued.
“-And I just think that if you spent a little time with her-“
“Rapunzel, when do we ever hang out?” Lance asks, stopping her in her tracks.
“What do you mean? We hang out! Just last week-“
“Without Eugene.”
“Well… what about the farmer’s festival?”
“Or the girls. Or Varian”
“Uh,” Rapunzel stalls.
“Exactly! Let’s just spend some time together without dragging somebody else around with us, yeah?” he suggests, hoping she’ll finally let this Faith thing drop.
“You’re right. It’s Rapunzel and Lance time.”
A shrill chirp assaults her left ear, and she amends her statement.
“Rapunzel, Lance and Pascal time.”
Rapunzel, Lance and Pascal time, they decide, is shopping time.
Every week brings new merchandise to the Coronan marketplace, with thrifty travellers stopping by and sailing off again, taking their wares with them. It makes every trip unique, despite how frustrating it can be to discover a new favourite jeweller only for them to disappear at the end of the month. Rapunzel and Lance stroll past the colourful stalls, stopping occasionally to admire a wall of watercolour paintings or to buy a brightly frosted cupcake. Eventually their attention is drawn involuntarily to a stall decorated with all sorts of crystal tchotchkes and trinkets, dazzling them with a kaleidoscope of glinting light.
“Oh look, it’s a little glass Pascal,” Rapunzel coos, picking up a glass figurine stained in green that vaguely formed the shape of a lizard. Pascal trills dubiously at it from her shoulder.
“Look at this,” Lance says, lifting up a glass goblet embossed with gold. “You know, my birthday is coming up,” he nudges her.
“Your birthday is whenever you feel like it is,” Rapunzel smirks at him. “It was your birthday three months ago, and again only two months before that.”
“I’m trying to get my senior’s benefits early, alright?” Lance teases.
The saleswoman packaging her goods in the corner finally notices them, and dusts off her hands on her skirt before leaning on the tabletop with a wide smile.
“See anything you like?” she asks, her eyes flicking from Rapunzel to Lance. “These glasswares were all made in Nosçae, Hervania- you won’t find better anywhere else. They’ve got a secret glassblowing technique that’s unique to the region.”
“We’ll take the chameleon,” Lance says, and laying his crowns down on the table.
“Aw, Lance. You don’t have to buy that for me,” Rapunzel protests, but Lance waves her off.
“Think of it as an early birthday present.”
Rapunzel purses her lips but doesn’t argue further; the figurine is adorable but a little too pricey just to buy for herself, but not so absurd that she won’t let Lance gift it to her. Her glass Pascal is wrapped up neat and secure in a bundle of packaging, and with it in hand they set off again. As soon as they’re out of earshot of the stall, Rapunzel leans over.
“So… she was cute, right?”
“Rapunzel.”
“Right. Sorry.”
Lance shakes his head, but can’t help the smile that crosses his face. It’s refreshing to finally catch up and spend time together, Rapunzel’s matchmaking attempts notwithstanding.
And the next time his ‘birthday’ rolls around, he finds himself in the possession of a familiar glass goblet, wrapped up with pink and green.
