Watcher fans sure are entitled and a little insane, ngl. "No one is going to sign up for your service! We're all poor! You've made the worst decision, and you'll be back in no time!" Saying this directly to the creators really reminds you of how low the respect for people you don't personally know has gone. I miss the forth wall between creator and audience.

I get and fully understand not having the money to support them, but... Watcher does have fans with money. A lot of them actually. They have merch sales. Their live tour sells out most venues. They have thousands of supporters on Patreon, where the cheapest tier is $5. They're able to gauge the rough finances of their staunchest supporters; that's how they landed on the subscription price. Yes, this move will reduce their viewership in sheer numbers, but to say all of their fans are broke and none will follow/support is factually incorrect.

It may not be a decision everyone agrees with, but severing the limitations of advertisers and youtube in favor of artistic freedom is a good thing. Yes, even if it comes with a loss of revenue. They understand that risk.

Also, I'm begging people to stop treating this like "another Netflix" or something and instead look at it as, "I am supporting a creator I like, similar to Patreon." They literally said in the video that they don't care if you share accounts. Get five friends, and you'll pay $1/mo.

I hate feeling compelled to rant in favor of their decision because I have my own reservations about whether it's the best move. However, I know it's not a choice they made lightly, and I like to think they understand that they'll need to branch out like crazy to entice subscribers.

Also just want to give some flowers to the animators this season. We've seen a lot of different alien planets these last few episodes and all of the backgrounds have been really breath taking and beautiful.

I watch a lot of adult animation and the only modern, western animation that even comes close to what LWD is doing right now is probably Disenchantment, the main difference being that the LWD backgrounds still mange to mesh pretty seamlessly with their normal character animation style in a way that the Disenchantment backgrounds didn't.

The artists on this show have just been going above and beyond this season and I appreciate them so much for it.

#james talks #riverdale #miss the whole crew really but Betty especially bc Lili was so magnificent #god as perfect as the finale was (and it really was one of the greatest finales ever) i wish we had gotten another season #they had as good a run as a show on that network could hope for but there are few shows on there that eclipsed the network like Riverdale #like the list includes like. Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Gossip Girl. and ig The Vampire Diaries. and that's it. #(that list is for shows almost exclusively produced by the CW. I'm gonna have to really tighten up my budget soon (the student loan pause is ending 😔), so I decided to give myself one big manga buying last hurrah before I sit down with the finance spreadsheet. I also, for unrelated reasons, ordered a couple volumes of manga, a webcomic printing, and a book earlier this week.

I have more packages coming in the next month than I've had at literally any other point in my lifetime. It's Hanukkah in August for Andromeda.

#I'm usually. uh. kind of a miser #Even the past few months. as I've been celebrating having a good job and disposable income for the first time #I'm still pretty careful about what I spend money on #but I've ordered eleven packages in the past week #10 of which are a book or manga of some kind #used book sites you are my very best friends #I got 5 things today for like 45 dollars total #and a large chunk of that was one specific expensive thing #we're cutting down the book budget from here out #but damn I'm excited #I read a LOT of manga digitally for obvious convenience and price reasons #can't beat the low low price of 🏴‍☠️ #but there's something so special about being able to curl up w a physical copy of something I love #I had like no physical case study volumes for a long time #so it's good to remedy that #invasion of the frogs #I promise I'm not bragging I'm just very very excited about this
