It's Tell a Friend Friday!
Please enjoy this photo I took of a flock of western gulls (Larus occidentalis) and note the pink legs that distinguish them from the very similar California gull (Larus californicus). Then tell someone you know about my work--you can reblog this post, or send it to someone you think may be interested in my natural history writing, classes, and tours. Round 2, Side B: Match 32
[Image ID: Two pictures of gulls. The left is a California gull standing on rocky ground. The right is a red-legged kittiwake standing on a rock with a small leafy branch in its bill. /End ID]
The California gull (Larus californicus) breeds in interior western North America and migrates to the western coast of North America in the winter. They typically measure 46-55 cm (18-22 in) in length and 122-137 cm (48-54 in) in wingspan. They have white underparts and head, grey upperparts and wings with black tips and white "mirrors," yellow legs, and yellow bill with black ring and red spot. They feed on fish, insects, worms, bird eggs, and carrion. To catch alkali flies that congregate on the shores of salty lakes, they will run through swarms with their head down and bill open, snapping flies up along the way.
The red-legged kittiwake (Rissa brevirostris) is a small gull that breeds on islands in the Bering Sea and spends the winter at sea. They typically measure 35-39 cm (14-15 in) in length and 84-92 cm (33-36 in) in wingspan. They have white underparts and head, dark grey back and wings with black tips, short yellow bill, and red legs. They feed on fish, squid, and invertebrates. They are listed as vulnerable by the IUCN.
