The Tomb of the Bull-King (Week 4, 22/01/2023)
Week 4 has been a little... delayed. Sigh, such is life and attempts to do a thing regularly. Here we are, the last wing of the first level, a tomb dedicated to an ancient warlord. Rich in future plot hooks as leading deeper into the complex.
Tumblr media
22. Priests’ Vestibule
This chamber is bare aside from stone hooks along the east and west walls, and a series of carefully concealed holes in the east wall (DC 15/Medium to spot). Anyone who stands in front of the stone door in the north wall triggers a magically maintained dart trap. The trap will fire four darts from the holes in the east wall, each dart targeting a random creature in the room (+8 to hit, 2 (1d4) piercing damage and an additional 11 (2d10) poison damage in a failed DC 15/Medium Constitution save). The trap rearms and reactivates every round, but can be disabled with a DC 15/Medium check or by pressing a holy symbol of Elemental Water against the northern door.
23. Mummy Preparation Chamber
Shelves line the west wall, stripped bare of the various embalming tools that would once have been stored here, and likewise the two tables are both bare, although the north one is covered in dark stains. The opposite east wall is covered in an expansive bas relief that depicts the mummification process, with the priests depicted as bird-headed humans.
A close examination of this room notes the priests engaging in a cleansing ritual centred around an altar, similar to the one in the Temple of Cleansing (Room 25) after working with the mummies, and has a chance (DC 20/Hard) to notice a secret door in the middle of the east wall, opened by pulling a lever built in the shelves in the west wall. A strong acrid smell greets anyone who opens it.
24. Secret Storeroom
Four horned mummies (use zombie statistics) guard three heavy wooden chests in this secret chamber. They will attack anyone entering the chamber who does not present a holy symbol of Elemental Water. The same strong acrid smell released when the door was opened fills the room.
The smell comes from the north chest, which contains various spoiled alchemical reagents and unguents for the mummification process. The south chest contains 200 gp in antique coins, each stamped with a bull’s head.
The middle chest is obviously locked (DC 15/Medium) and trapped (DC 15/Medium to spot); any attempt to pick the lock rather than unlocking with the correct key triggers a poison needle that does 1 point of piercing damage automatically to the lock-picker, who must then succeed on a DC 15/Medium Constitution saving throw of suffer 11 (2d10) poison damage, and be Poisoned until they rest for the day. This chest contains a religious text written in Infernal titled Psalm Of The Burning Bull, which espouses a philosophy of martial domination as a means of achieving a divinely sanctioned order. It is magically preserved, has a red enamelled cover depicting a bull held aloft by wings of fire, and is worth 300gp if sold to a suitable collector. It can also be substituted for the material competent in any spell to summon fiendish spirits; it is never consumed when used in this way.
25. Temple of Cleansing
The east wall is covered in bas reliefs of horned humans engaging in various activities at sea: fishing, sailing, swimming, and the like. The altar against the east wall has a silver bowl embedded in it, which fills with 3 pints of holy water at moonrise everyday. If someone washes their hands in the bowl, there is a blaze of brilliant blue light and they are targeted by a lesser restoration spell.
26. The Bull-King’s Throne
There is a massive stone throne in the centre of this room, decorated with brass bull’s heads on the arm rests. Investigating it (DC 10/Easy) finds an long-looted secret compartment underneath the throne.
27. Hall of the Honour Guard
This long, wide corridor echoes silently. Four large, shattered sarcophagi stand in alcoves along the west wall. If any one approaches the centre of the corridor, where there is a set of stairs leading down to a pair of brass doors, four skeletons rise up from the sarcophagi and attack, seemingly forming of the dust and loose rubble. No one has yet identified the magic that animates these skeletons.
28. The Tomb of the Bull-King
This chamber has been converted into a makeshift campsite by the current inhabitant, an antisocial minotaur named Pyronica. She is swift to attack any intruders, but if reduced to 19 hit points or less she will retreat and can bargain with or be intimidated into surrender. She knows very little about the rest of the complex, having not ventured far, although she can explain the hazards of the Hall of the Honour Guard (room 27), the Priests’ Vestibule (room 22), and the Grand Staircase (room 29).
She is convinced that this is the tomb of her ancestor and has been engaged in repairing it, as evidenced by shoddy repaints to the faded and cracked frescos that cover the east and west walls, and the painting and mason’s tools scattered haphazardly around the room.  Pyronica’s other personal effects, which included a stash of 3 eye agates worth 10 gp each and 7 days of iron rations (mainly dried deer jerky), occupies the south-west corner of the room.
The remains of the supposed ancestor are interred in a massive sarcophagus on a raised dais, which has been crudely repaired by Pyronica since being obviously smashed open. The cover is carved to depict a large male minotaur dressed in heavy plate and holding a greataxe, however the bare skeleton within is that of a human with curved bull horns growing from their skull, admittedly one that would have stood seven feet tall! Either a successful history check (DC 15/Medium) or questioning Pyronica will identify this as Ast-Nicron the Bull-King, a mighty war leader of the civilisation that built this complex the Riddle stands on top of. Pyronica can explain that his magical relics were stolen by intruders and have been taken deeper into the complex, returning either the armour or the axe will secure Pyronica as an ally for future delves.
At some point, something burrowed into the complex here, leaving behind a 300 foot long tunnel that emerges in the hills north of the Riddle. There is a one-in-six chance that anyone entering or leaving this way will encounter a bulette.

Portrait of My Gender as [Inaudible]
- Meg Day
I knew I was a god when you could not agree on my name & still, none you spoke could force me to listen closer. Is this the nothing the antelope felt when Adam, lit on his own entitling, dubbed family, genus, species? So many descendants became doctors, delivered babies, bestowed bodies names as if to say it is to make it so. Can it be a comfort between us, the fact of my creation? I was made in the image of a thing without an image & silence, too, is your invention. Who prays for a god except to appear with answers, but never a body? A voice? If I told you you wouldn’t believe me because I was the one to say it. On the first day there was no sound worth mentioning. If  I, too, am a conductor of air, the only praise I know is in stereo
(one pair—an open hand & closed fist—will have to do). I made a photograph of my name: there was a shadow in a field & I put my shadow in it. You can’t hear me, but I’m there.

Exodus 12:14-13:16, Matthew 20:29-21:22, Psalms 25:16-22, Proverbs 6:12-15
Today is the 31st day of January welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I am Brian it is wonderful to be here with you today on the last day of the first month of the year. Obviously our 31st day on our journey through the Scriptures. And, so, we’re a month in. We’re kind of out beyond the shoreline now. We have sailed and we look back at where we started, and we can't see. We’re out in the deep. We’re sailing across the year together and it is a joy to be on this voyage with you and it is a joy to be able to gather around the Global Campfire today and take the next step forward, the step that leads us to end our first month and that next step forward leads us back into the book of Exodus, back into the story of Moses, back into the story of the deliverance of the children of Israel from their Egyptian slavery. And we will see that story come to its fruition today. Exodus chapter 12 verse 14 through 13 verse 16.
Commentary:
Okay. So, in the book of Exodus today we have the…the moment of deliverance and we were able to witness that as Passover was observed and…and Egypt lost their firstborn. And it didn't have to happen, but it did happen. And at that point, like there was nothing else to do would let the people go. Because after the firstborn have died than who's next? Like if this is where…if this is where were at then this God who is invading Egypt is a very powerful God. And…and they can keep resisting but every time they resist, they get destroyed more and more. So, they can resist until they're completely destroyed, or they can realize that they've Artie been destroyed and it's time to let the people go. And the people marched out plundering Egypt - silver and gold, garments supplies, 600,000 men on foot. Well over a million people by the account in the book of Exodus are heading into the wilderness and it's a magic moment because freedom has come for the children of Israel. It’s a terribly sad moment for the Egyptians who were becoming more and more clear that their gods were not powerful enough to save them. And the awe and reverence for the God of Israel, the most-high God had descended upon Egypt, and God was made famous in Egypt and stayed famous in Egypt and this whole Exodus story spreads throughout the entire land as we will see as we go forward. And it might seem like, great man! They're going to go to the promised land now. This is the story. This is awesome! And it is awesome, but this is just the beginning of the story. We have many dusty miles and many lessons to learn as we navigate ourselves into the wilderness.
In the book of Matthew, we are…well…we are heading toward the conclusion of the book of Matthew, but we are heading into the passion narrative, the story of the last days of Jesus. And, so, we arrived in Jerusalem today for these last days and we will be moving through that for the first time this year in the coming days. But while He is on his way to Jerusalem. So, like while He's coming from the Galilee and going to Jerusalem He's going south. It's like 90 miles south, but the way that the path could be handled most easily was to head from the Galilee down into the Jordan Valley, and then follow the Valley like along the Jordan River, follow the Valley and follow it all the way to the city of Jericho and then go up to Jerusalem from there. And, so, Jericho being below sea level, that's a pretty steep climb, but it's an 18-mile hike up to Jerusalem. And, so, we find Jesus in Jericho today on His way to Jerusalem. So, He's left the Galilee, gone into the Jordan Valley, made His way south to Jericho and now He's got this climb up into Jerusalem. But He’s in Jericho and as He's passing to Jericho there are blind men on the road and they hear that it's Jesus that is passing by and they begin yelling, “have mercy on us, Son of David.” They’re just calling out because they can hear that there's a big crowd but they’re blind so they can’t see. They can’t get through the crowd, they can’t find Jesus, they wouldn’t know Jesus if they found Him. They don’t know what He looks like. But they've heard of Jesus, and they know what His reputation is and they’re yelling to try to get His attention. And the crowds trying to keep them quiet of course. And they’re just yelling, “Jesus. Jesus Son of David, have mercy on us.” And He heard them. He heard them and He stopped, and He brought them to Him, and He said, “what you want me to do for you?” And they said they wanted their eyes opened. And Jesus opened their eyes and they could see and they followed Him. It’s a beautiful story. It’s just story that if we go one layer deeper, we realize it's our story. It's our story encapsulated in their story, and it reveals to us a posture, a posture of heart that we are to espouse, knowing that on our own we are spiritually blind, that we are wandering, that we can't see where we’re going, that we fall down, that we’re disadvantaged, that we can’t get anything done, that we’re blind. And when we reach a point where we realize this, and we understand that it's total and we cry out, have mercy upon me, when we realize our utter need and our utter dependence and reach then we hear these words coming back, “what you want me to do for you?” And our response is what Jesus has been calling out in His ministry. Our response is to ask for eyes to see and ears to hear. The blindmen say it beautifully. “Lord, let our eyes be open.”
Prayer:
Jesus, this is our prayer today. Let our eyes be opened. May we see things as they are. May we see through Your eyes, not only the world and the people in the world around us, but may we see ourselves through Your eyes. We are reaching for You in desperation, knowing our utter dependence and our complete need of You. We are blind. Open our eyes. May we have eyes to see and ears to hear, we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Community Prayer and Praise:
Good morning this is Early Riser. I'm on my way to work. I’m simply calling in to express how much joy I have when I hear the variety of people talking. Last week someone prayed in the Asian language I think it was Chinese. Hearing different accents. I'm in the Midwest. So, hearing what an accent is to be from the northeast or the southeast or a western accent or Canadian accent or people calling from the UK, South Africa, it's such a beautiful picture of what the diversity in the Kingdom of God is like. What I consider an accent is flavor, different minerals, and salts. Somebody else can hear me and think that I have an accent. And it's just this beautiful expression of the diversity of who the Kingdom is and who is also around this…
Hello this is Lisa from Oklahoma and I just listened to DAB and I heard Emily from Washington praying about her anger. I also struggle with these issues. So, I would like to know if you up in prayer. Dear God as we come before You we ask that You would help Emily Lord Jesus. You see her heart and You know that she doesn't want to be this way. And You see her trying and I just ask that You would bind Satan in the name of Jesus and that You would keep away this anger and help her Lord to find peace and comfort in knowing You and that You can give her what she needs to be the mother that she needs to be to her kids. And help her give herself and not to beat herself up Lord because sometimes things affect us that we're not even aware of and it makes an anger and we don't even know where it's coming from. I have been there, and I have lived through it and You have helped me and You can help Emily. God just wrap her in Your arms. Give her the peace that she needs. Let her know that she can get through this and with God all things are possible. I'm praying for you Emily I hope you have a great...
Father God we just praise You today, we worship You today. And I lift up my brother Garrett today God. I will lift up his return to You, his falling in love with You, his knowing that the addiction and the drift and disconnect from You came when he gave all the love that should have been Yours to another god. I pray that You would heal him and You would hold him and he would fall so deeply into serving You God that he will be healthy in the next relationship. I lift my sister Emily God. I lift up the anger of God that she has given way to this year, __ out on her children God. I lift up her children and I pray for a healing of their spirits and their hearts of all they've heard and all they've experienced. But God I pray that Emily would know that this time does come up as prayer and fasting God. Let her know no spirit has control of her God. Let her know right now in the mighty name of Jesus that greater are You in her than anything in the world, that the anger is the work of the flesh that can be broken, the entire back of it can be broken through prayer and fasting, not only her but anybody else dealing with the same stronghold God. I lift up Devon God. I lift her up right now right now God. I thank You for her journey as a pregnant mom and God the journey she's had in learning Your word God. I pray that she'll take it one day at a time, that she won't feel so overloaded with trying to catch up God, that the value and the treasure in each day will be lost in this seed and the load she's trying to carry every day. Let that word just permeate her soul. Thank You for Brian, thank You for China God, thank You for Jill and the DAB family in Jesus’ name. This is Dawn of a New Day. Love you DAB family.
Hi Daily Audio Bible family. My name's Derek from Oklahoma. I've been dealing with a lot of things in the last year - health issues, started drinking heavily. I was terrible to my loved ones and the people around me and my addiction was helpless. In the past month I've been listening with Daily Audio Bible, seeking God. And in my prayer and fasting He gave me this prayer that I want to share with you guys for anybody that's dealt with some of the stuff I've been dealing with and maybe different things, but you know if this is you. Dear God, I felt like I'm not enough for Your service. From this I see come all of my weaknesses. I've short sighted You Lord. I've lacked faith. God please show me that I'm worthy of You and that I've allowed Satan to trick me into believing that I'm not. Forgive me. Put me into situations where I can find my worth in You. Help me to be of service to You Lord Jesus. Make me enough. I've shied away from Your service and I've tried every single thing I can think of to not be all in. Help me to forgive myself like You forgive me and to see myself I was Your temple and Your child. Redeem me Lord. Renew me. Make me whole in You. May my body be a fitting drawing piece for You. Maybe I be light and salt in Your world and help others to seek You. That was the prayer He gave me last night. I love you all. I've cherished listening to your prayers for others and your requests for prayers and I've been praying along with you. I’ve been listening with Brian. Grateful for all of you and grateful for community of Christians. You're so sincere. Love you all. God bless.
Good evening my DAB family this is Mavis calling in from Grenada in the Caribbean. I want to pray for Paul out in Houston who has been separated from his wife and his family for six years and is going to __ at the end of February to be able to bring the family together again. Lord, we thank You. We bless Your name. We thank You Lord because You are in the healing and the restoration business. Nothing is too hard for You to do. We thank You cool Paul and for the strength that You have given him over those years father. We thank You for touching his heart oh Lord. Oh we thank You for his family that You are restoring them, You’re restoring his wife and his children unto him. Bless that relationship oh God. Bless him in the name of Jesus. We thank You that You are going to take full control of this situation. Bring the family back together again. Let him experience Your amazing love. Oh God we pray that You will strengthen him. Oh, he will look to You the author and finisher of his faith. We thank You Lord that he can find the strength in the midst of the storm to continue to serve You. So, we love you Paul and we thank you that God will strengthen you and give you the courage to continue to hold on. Do not give up. Hold on. God is standing right there with you. We love you. Bye.

August 13, 2023
August 13, 2023
Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Book of Kings 19: 9a, 11-13a
The Lord came to Elijah in a surprising way.
Psalm 85
The Psalmist shares what God shares with us.
Romans 9: 1-5
Paul laments that his own people could not accept Christ.
Matthew 14: 22-33
Peter’s fear overcame him as he walked toward Jesus on the stormy water.
Our readings this weekend are full of surprises. Most of us might expect to find God in power like wind, fire, and as the first reading states “crushing rocks and an earthquake.  But the surprise is that the prophet recognizes God in a tiny faint sound. Paul is perhaps surprised that his Jewish brothers and sisters did not accept Christ as he did.  And of course, surprising storms were not unusual on the Sea of Galilee but to see Jesus walking on water was startling as was last weeks Transfiguration.  And Peter may have surprised himself as he stepped out of the boat onto the water, but his surprise turned to outright fear as he began to sink.
What are some of the messages for us this weekend?
Elijah, on a mountain, takes shelter and receives a call to stand outside a cave and experience God passing by. The prophet in the verses before this reading, is on the mountain to escape threats made toward him because of his opposition to the behavior of the people and their leaders. He must have believed that in the drama of fire, wind, and earthquake,  God was present and could help him. But the surprise was found in silence and, a” tiny whispering sound.”  In the verses that follow, God asks him to return and carry out his mission.
All around us these days, we are bombarded with sounds like “fire, wind, and earthquakes” not only because of climate change but in our discourse and political lives.  Our nation it seems to many of us, needs to take the time to listen to the tiny whispering sounds of truth, compassion, and respect.  To listen to the powerless voices of the poor and neglected.  We need to abandon lies and self-centered behavior that damage so many people. And in addition, I believe it is important to be aware of the small tiny, often unimportant voices that we hear each and every day.  Voices that may be sending us messages from our God.
Paul must have been heartbroken that he could not convince more of his Jewish brothers and sisters of Jesus’ real identity. He writes, “For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my own people….”   What a heartfelt, powerful statement of love and faith. What kind of a message does this reading share with us today? The love of Paul for his Jewish brothers and sisters is so evident.  And in our lives and ministries at times we disagree with others but the call of Christ for all of us is to love them and make efforts to understand them.
And Matthew shares the surprise the disciples in the boat must have experienced as they saw Jesus walking on water.  They believed he was praying on a mountain and getting some rest.  The Galilee storms were not a surprise but this one seems severe.  What a surprise to see the figure of Jesus approaching them walking calming on the water.  The surprise led to fear and terror.
I have a sense that many of us have found ourselves in a situation that not only surprises us but brings fear and terror into our lives.   It is amazing to me that Peter even stepped out of the boat, but he was showing a level of faith in Jesus. But surprise and fear won the day.
On some level, it may be hard to get our arms around this Gospel story.  What message might be there for us?  Often in the unexpected and surprising moments of life, when we reflect on them, or step back from them, we find God is present and our fears were unfounded.   And often when we are afraid and life overwhelms us like Peter sinking in the sea, we do pray, “Lord save me” .  May we experience the response of Christ in our difficult moments. “Immediately, Jesus stretched out his hand and caught Peter….”  Peter took a risk reached for that hand, and he was saved and recognized Jesus.
May his actions and experiences help as we struggle with the surprises in our own lives.

Sunday blessings, friends! How can I pray for you this week? 🙏💗 This may not be the sweetest and most comforting image, but as Halloween approaches I thought it might be interesting to consider some real life monsters of the Bible in order to be reassured of God’s sovereignty over any weapon that could ever be forged against us. Though mysterious and seemingly obscure, the Leviathan is an important creature in the Bible on both a symbolic and a supernatural level. It was first introduced in the Book of Job by God himself in his final answer to Job’s accusations against him. It is the only animal in the book of Job that has an entire chapter devoted to it (chapter 41) and is the last thing God tells Job about before Job becomes convicted of his own lack of understanding and apologizes. In Job God describes it as a fearful, invulnerable, fire-breathing sea monster. When introducing it and another monster (behemoth) in Chapter 40, God tells Job that if he, a human, is truly an equal to God, “Then I myself will admit to you that your own right hand can save you.” (40:14). The point is just as comforting as it is humbling. Nothing can save us from the monsters we face in this world but the Lord himself. This is especially important when we consider Leviathan because I believe it is much more than a symbolic sermon illustration. Leviathan is mentioned again in Psalm 74 as a sea monster whose heads were crushed by God to protect the children of Israel. Then Isaiah 27 describes Leviathan as a coiling serpent of the sea that the Lord will slay during a possible end times restoration of his covenant with Israel. This makes it very interesting when the devil himself is described as “that ancient serpent” and a dragon in the Book of Revelation. So Leviathan may very well be a form of our ultimate enemy whose defeat has already been ordained by God and his son. So even though the darker themes of Halloween can make some Christians uneasy, studying the Biblical truths about our greatest defense should bring us comfort and clarity about any battles we face. ✨ #SundayBlessings #prayerrequests #leviathan #job #cainspirations #kristicainbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/CkDvB1GrGbr/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Ghazal for Finally Leaving What Has Already Left
I imagine there were angels once, or at least the sound of them, trumpeting some broken hallelujah against the ceiling above that bed.
There must have been electricity - a current - to power the elaborate maneuvering that kept me fastened to that bed.
I don’t remember much: the arrivals & departures blurred as healing scars & the kitchen always quiet. There was little concern for bedlam     or bedtime.
& the mornings it snowed kept me close to the windows, screens thawing - like my want - wired & damp. At night, a phantom weight beside me in     the bed.
I imagine spring could have begun kindly & coaxed the steady stride of summer into its measured snare - an entire season of sickness, bed-
bound alone with The Book of Hours - then swung hard into September, pocket watches leaned open in palms like old men in gold rockers; beds
like deep yawns, yawns like gaping coffins. Lord, what was I  but made in your image: invisible. I come to you a cavern of bedrock,
rendered acquiescent. I arrive secondhand. You, Lord, are the woman I longed to be or be with, the walking ache of so many confessions,    the merciful repository embedded
in surrender. Come: weep in my arms. If you are the beginning & end, then let us be what we are best: the slow departure, the     unlikely subsistence, bedmates without a bed.

1 Samuel 24:1-25:44, John 10:22-42, Psalms 116:1-19, Proverbs 15:20-21
Today is the 19th day of May welcome to the Daily Audio Bible I’m Brian it is always fantastic to be here together around the Global Campfire gathering and taking the next step forward together. And, so, it is a joy to be here with you today. And our next step for leads us back into the drama that we have going in…in the book of first Samuel, the drama between King Saul and David, who is the king's son-in-law at this point, but who is also a fugitive on the run, trying to stay alive at this point as King Saul does everything in his power to try to find, locate, and kill David. So, let’s pick up the story. First Samuel 24 and 25 today.
Commentary:
Okay. So, in first Samuel today…well…a couple of things. First of all, Samuel died, and he was buried at his house in Ramah and everybody mourn for him and that's all were told. Samuel died. All Israel gathered together and mourned for him. They buried him at his house in Ramah. There isn't a lot of pageantry about it in the Bible. It’s just that Samuel being the last judge of Israel and a prophet of God, we should at least take a moment here and say, okay, so Samuel’s passed from the story and we’re moving on without this prophetic voice of Samuel in Saul's life or in David's life. But we have kind of journeyed with Saul and David. We saw the whole thing unfold. We saw how David got famous. We saw how paranoid Saul got about David. And we’ve been watching David be on the run, doing everything he can to protect his family, but just trying to stay alive as Saul pursues him. Today we sort of turned a corner in that story, and now the character of the two men is becoming very very clearly apparent. It’s becoming clearly apparent to us, the readers of the Scriptures as we read the story, but it was also becoming very apparent to those who were near David and observing him. So, one of the scenes that we experienced today in today's reading was that Saul and his men are hiding near the oasis of Ein Gedi. The oasis of Ein Gedi is a place until this very day, and it's…it's quite near the Dead Sea. So, we are in the desert. We are very near the Dead Sea. We are really near the lowest point on earth below sea level, which is the Dead Sea. And the oasis of Ein Gedi just is…is a fresh water source in the desert that's running down from Jerusalem toward the lowest point on earth. So, there's a water source there and there are caves all throughout that area all over that area and can continuing further north and south of Ein Gedi. So, just a little north of Ein Gedi would be like the caves of Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. So, there's caves all over this area. But the fresh water source at Ein Gedi would've been necessary. So, David is hiding in the caves of Ein Gedi, and we were just there not too long ago. And there are…there are photographs of Ein Gedi in Promised Land, photographs from the land of the Bible, the picture book from land of the Bible. Ein Gedi is covered in the Promised Land film. So, you can kinda go see all this for yourself. But this is the place where we locate ourselves in today's reading. the king, king Saul has elite troops hunting David, searching for David, and the king is leading them. They’re trying to find David and his men to kill him. David's hiding in a cave with his men. Saul’s gotta go to the bathroom. This is a funny…really, really, funny story to me in its own way because of what's just not being said here. Saul's with his elite troops. If he's gotta go the bathroom he’s gonna go to the bathroom unless he needs some privacy. And he needs some privacy. So, he needs a little privacy to do his business, his royal business. And, so, he…goes into a cave as the Scriptures tell us, to relieve himself and David and his men are in the back of the cave. So, Saul…Saul comes into the cave, right? Probably takes his robe off or whatever, sets it aside or whatever, moves it around, however, and he squats down and he's doing his business, and this is being observed and witnessed and he doesn't know that. And, so, here is David with his mortal enemy with his trousers around his ankles basically like completely vulnerable. He could be killed so easily. And David creeps up behind the king as the king is focusing his attention on what he's doing, and David is able to cut off a little square, a little patch off the king's robe and retreat back into the cave. And the king finishes up what he's doing and adjusts himself and gets ready and goes back out to lead his men and that's when David comes out of the cave. My father, right? King Saul. He calls to the king, and there is a small discussion. David is essentially saying, why…you know that…why are you…what do you think you're gonna win if you kill me? Like, I'm…I’m…am I more valuable than a dead dog or a flea? Who am I? You are the king. Who am I? And and what have I done? In what way have I sinned against you? In what way have I been been disloyal to our nation? In what way have I sinned against God's anointed, the king of Israel? And that's when David reveals that he had cut off a patch from Saul's robe. And he tells him, the Lord delivered you into my hand. You…you could be dead right now, like literally. You’ve been searching and searching everywhere high and low to find me to kill me and do you could be dead right now with your blank eyes staring at the ceiling of a cave. You could be dead. You were delivered into my hand, but I will not lift my hand against God's anointed. Everybody is seeing this. These elite troops of Israel are seeing this. David's men are seeing this. The king is…is remorseful and repents in this in this moment. He is seeing this. He confesses that he's seeing this. So, this is a moment in the story where observing the character and the actions of these people is important as we understand where the pathways of Saul and David lead. David has led with character, and it's being seen and it's going to matter. It’s actually going to matter a lot as we continue forward in the story.
Prayer:
Father, we thank you for your word and we thank you for stories like this that intertwined lives and pathways are forged and we see where the road lead leads and we see where the actions lead and we see the character of people and where their lives take them. Holy Spirit come and shine the light of truth into our own hearts, into our own character. Illuminate the path that we are walking as we observe the paths that Saul and David are walking and show us the narrow path that leads to life, the only path we want to be walking. We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.
