He drove his Cadillac under the glittering sun. Shadows that might have been cast by all the peoples of the earth flickered over it. He was an American builder and millionaire. The souls of billions fluttered like spooks over the polish of the great black hood. In distant Ethiopia people with dysentery as they squatted over ditches, faint and perishing, opened copies of Business Week, abandoned by tourists, and saw his face or faces like his. But it seemed to me that there were few faces like his, with the ferocious profile that brought to mind the Latin word rapax or one of Rouault's crazed death-dealing arbitrary kings.

Fusion music is cool, right? Multiple different cultural styles of music coming together and forming something that isn’t quite any of the originals, but which takes the best parts of its parent genres and makes a cool, funky hybrid.  You’ve got jazz!  Now, what happens when that fusion genre fuses with another fusion genre?  Hey, now you’ve got Latin jazz!
And when your double-fused genre meets yet another fusion genre, especially a really friendly one like klezmer?
You get this.  And it is awesome.
The Klezmer Company Jazz Orchestra was founded in Florida by a cantor’s son named Aaron Kula, after he moved to Florida from Long Island.  In some ways, it recalls the Latin music craze that swept the American Jewish community in the 1950s, and in other ways, it goes far beyond anything you might have hear on Bagels and Bongos (1959).  Kula calls this style “Jubano Jazz,” which really kind of sums up the fantastic mixture of dance music cultures going on here.

Brazil’s Copycat Insurrection Won’t Be the Last
Social-media misinformation feeds anti-democratic rage that risks going global.
Tumblr media
What is it about January that makes people want to take a little jaunt in their nation’s capital city for some fresh air, and before you know it, they’re launching a full-scale attack on every democratic institution in sight?
Two years ago on Jan. 6, a small group of violent Americans wrote the Proud Boy playbook for “How Not to Throw an Insurrection 101” after Donald Trump invited his radical supporters to storm Congress and prevent Joe Biden from becoming president. We all know how that worked out. Fans of Brazil’s Jair Bolsonaro apparently felt the American manual lacked pizazz, so they attempted to write their own this weekend. Let’s call it “Insurrection for Dummies.” I took creative liberties in designing a possible cover:
Tumblr media
What Eduardo Porter calls a “pathetic” and “crazed” gang of rioters lacked virtually every element of coordination possible. Brazil’s congress wasn’t in session at the time of the assault. The inauguration of Bolsonaro’s rival for the presidency, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, had already taken place, and he wasn’t even in town the day the mob trashed his offices. As for Bolsonaro, he hardly seems ready to seize the reins of power, having been spotted moseying around a Florida Publix before returning to his favorite place on Earth, the hospital. Little wonder the mutiny was extinguished by Brazilian police within a matter of hours.
Still, antidemocratic demons continue to haunt nearly every corner of Latin America.

26: Empire Bakuba // Empire Bakuba [1986]
Tumblr media
Empire Bakuba [AKA Obosini Kisomele] Empire Bakuba 1986, Syllart
Every few years some branch of ‘world music’ sweeps through the American and European charts. Today, reggaeton/Latin trap is probably the trendiest; in the 1980s it was a bramble of interrelated African dance music genres like Afrobeat, highlife, jit, and soukous. Soukous is a Congolese form, marked by giddy rhythms and sugarcane guitar improvisation, usually led by a charismatic vocalist who doubles as a hype man. With roots in American R&B and Cuban rumba, it’s a kind of pan-Black form of music—and yet, the guitar style is also faintly reminiscent of bluegrass. So, of course, it’s easy to see why white people, most notably Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel, and David Byrne, went nuts for it.
I have a handful of mid-‘80s soukous LPs, mostly French pressings on account of it being a craze there at the time. It’s always exciting sliding a record out of the sleeve and seeing the huge rings—soukous LPs were meant to soundtrack lengthy dance parties and the tracks, usually two per side, average from 8 to 14 minutes each. Empire Bakuba were a locally beloved band with a considerable discography, including a few self-titled releases; this one, which I’ve also seen referred to as Obisini Kisomele after its opening track, is from near the height of their popularity in 1986. It’s endlessly listenable, like most of what I’ve heard by them. They understood their job to be making people move, found a sound that irresistibly did so, and stuck to it.
There’s something about their music that feels like someone has slipped a very, very long finger into my ear so they can rub on my brain’s pleasure centres. After each side, I almost feel sore from all the direct stimulation—but then I stagger over, give it a flip, and check in for twenty minutes’ more bliss.

The Pupi Campo Centennial
Born 100 years ago today, Cuban American singer, dancer and bandleader Jacinto “Pupi” Campo (1920-2011). Originally a dancer in Havana nightclubs, Campo was called the “Ray Bolger of Cuba”, by virtue of his eccentric Latin moves. He put together his band during the Latin craze of the 1940s, when Vincent Lopez, Xavier Cugat, and Desi Arnaz also achieved popularity (he got his U.S. start by…

It didn’t feel ‘cool’ to be on tumblr back then
attention - rumbling forward!!!
you were warned
recently i’ve watched some essay youtube videos of people that, just like me, were part of the tumblr (should i say community?) about 10 years ago when we all were teenagers about said platform. when i talk to friends (just one friend actually) younger than me about tumblr, they weren’t old enough to be on it, but somehow participate in the revival through tiktok - a idealized nostalgia - like every nostalgia, doens’t really express truly the experience.
i agree that tik tok can be very damaging to teenagers, girls or anyone trying to fit in that aesthetic-craze - but at least they are accepted now.
but honestly, it didn’t feel cool to be on tumblr. i was here because i was too lonely, sad and weird to be anywhere else. i did fake the tumblr persona to myself because i couldn’t afford cool clothes, straightned hair and hang out with my “i’m a freak” group of friends in american suburban neighborhood.
i come from a working class family in latin america, my parents were very strict, so hanging out with friends without an adult wasn’t a thing. i was thin, but wasn’t the “right” thin, my hair was wild, my smile cracked, my attitude shy and i had different interests than others. conclusion: was bullied from day one in middle school.
Add to that: i studied in a protestant school and i questioned the “religion” teacher because i saw of something called “atheism” on the internet (yes, i was that naive) conclusion: i was heavily bullied from day one in middle school til the day i left for sophomore high.
does that still affect me today? of course, dummy! i am 24 yo now, is saturday night and i am reflecting on the topic because i feel like shit due to a traumatic event i went through on monday. shit happens to me and everytime i spend hours and hours asking myself “why do i feel so awful?” and my mind always gets me back to those pleasent memories of the good ol’ teenage years.
i decided to write here because i got inspired by those yt essays, i want to vent about what happened to me on monday, but i can’t really vocalize nor write it yet. i want to go to a psychologist to understand what happened and cope with it properly before telling my family, i don’t want it to be a long lasting trauma like the bullying in school days.
10 years forward, i’m not a depressed, teen anymore. anxious adult? sure. but now i have a ~life and i don’t have to nor want to rely on a internet persona to be validated, to exist. i just want to vent, to rumble, to understant what i’m thinking before speaking to my loved ones, so they don’t ask me things i can’t answer and worrying (see the anxiety coming thru?).
So, tumblr.
what was the question? yes, “It didn’t feel ‘cool’ to be on tumblr back then” it didn’t, but it was special anyways. i’m not miserable all the time, but sometimes i do, other times i write. it’s a wrap!
you’ll never read this, but thank you, Frog, for holding me tight <3
see ya next time, folks

Kerala, the Latin America of India!!!
The small state of Kerala, located to the very south of India, might be famous for way many stuffs. The cuisine, the backwaters, the waterfalls, ayurveda, boat race, culture etc. etc. It is fondly nicknamed as the god's own country due to its moderate and pleasant climate all round the year, making it a tourist’s haven. But something that is not much celebrated outside is the state’s unparalleled passion for the game of football. In a country that is crazy for cricket, with practically no other sport managing to pull crowds to that extend, Kerala holds a special place (may be along with West Bengal) What makes it unique is the immense fan following that foreign football clubs and international teams enjoy in the small state. Notably the two Latin American giants, Brazil, and Argentina. The Keralities, often referred to as Malayalees (people who speak the language Malayalam) traditionally take sides of two upon anything and anyone. Be it their taste of politics, its either the Left (Democratic Communist Party) or the right-wing (Congress Party). When it comes to movies its Lalettan or Mammookka since the latter half of 80s, (Two reigning superstars, Mohanlal and Mammootty) before that it was Sathyan and Nazir. Even among the neighbouring state language’s cinema there is this grouping of two among Malayalis, to Vijay or Surya. (Tamil superstars) So here they are…. when it comes to the beautiful game, the people of Kerala had sided with two of the most successful and aesthetically playing teams in the world, The Canaris and The Albicelestians.
Like all the above-mentioned crazes, this one too wasn’t developed overnight. Brazil had traditionally produced superstars and won 3 world cups even before the 1980s, that is relevant because the revolution of television hit the country during that decade. Players like Pele, Garrincha, Vava and Socrates had already been part of the Kerala folklore, as much as they been to that of Rio De Janero or Sao Polo. The Malayalam newspapers, sports magazines and radio stations made poetry out of their games.
That was when the Mexico world cup of 1986 arrived. That was also the time of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi who were a strong advocate of television culture, with nationalised television serials and government programs already up and running among the limited TV audience of the country. Like most of the country, the not so rich Kerala also dived into the trend. If not in every household, at least in every neighbourhood, came TV.
In that world cup, Argentina was led by a new and young captain. A short statured, curly haired young man, Deigo Armando Maradona!!! The name had already started to make waves in the footballing world. What happened in Mexico was history, but it also marked the beginning of unending love towards Argentine football, nearly fifteen thousand kilometres away from the mainland of Argentina. That was followed up by another stellar performance by the legend, making Argentina runners up in the next world cup.
All these paved way to the formation of numerous fans clubs and associations for both Brazil and Argentina all over the state. Not just the fandom, but the game too grew with them. Hundreds of football clubs were formed, tournaments held, even involving foreign clubs. Today seldom will you find an empty gallery for any tier of football match in the state, a craze that matches the streets of Latin America. A feat that was admired even by foreign star players when they got a taste of it through the Indian Super League. The Kerala Blasters FC once had an average attendance that ranked them among the top 10 in the world.

The US public got its first taste of bananas at the 1876 United States Centennial Exhibition. The Philadelphia event’s many displays included the new typewriter, Alexander Graham Bell’s telephone, the Statue of Liberty’s still-unattached right arm, and an exotic banana tree. The plant was so popular that it required its own security guard, and curious visitors could buy and try its phallic fruit for just 10 cents. At the time, bananas were largely unknown outside of their native locations, but they quickly became common household foods in Europe and North America.
Today, bananas are the most consumed fruit in the world, with an industry that generates 12 billion dollars per year. Developed countries account for 80% of the fruit’s consumers, though 75% of global exports come from Latin America and the Caribbean, where bananas are the most grown fruit. The crop’s dominance and ubiquity has had serious and far-reaching implications for the region, engendering exploitative labor systems, climate change, and migration.
La Fiebre del Banano / Banana Craze is the first major study to examine the banana’s role in shaping culture, nature, and politics in the areas where it’s grown. The digital exhibition and research project is co-curated by Dr. Blanca Serrano, the project director at the Institute for Studies on Latin American Art, in New York, and Dr. Juanita Solano, an assistant professor of art history at the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá, Colombia. Together, Serrano and Solano have gathered nearly 100 banana-related artworks by artists dating from 1960 to today. The database is divided into three themes — identities, ecosystems, and violences — but the online interface also allows viewers to search and encounter works alphabetically, chronologically, and geographically. The site is available in both English and Spanish, and will continue to be updated into the future. [...] “It was a small show, but it showed us that we could tell a very complicated history through just one fruit,” the curators explained to Hyperallergic in a recent email. “We saw that we could tell the sociopolitical history of Latin America in the early 20th century through the banana.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Standouts from the online display include Claudia Claremi’s installation La memoria de las frutas (Puerto Rico) (The Memory of Fruits [Puerto Rico]) (2015-16), which users can experience through installation images and a linked video. The piece records residents of San Juan, Puerto Rico, as they describe the island’s native fruits. Shot in black and white on 35 mm and 16 mm film, the photos and videos show speakers’ hand gestures as they reminisce about these fruits, which have largely been pushed out to make way for more marketable crops like bananas. [...]
Another work, the series Fotografías de las antiguas instalaciones de los campamentos de la UFCO (Photographs of the Old Camp Installations of the UFCO) (2014), by Elkin Calderón, captures the abandoned buildings of the United Fruit Company in Magdalena, Colombia, where the company massacred protesting banana workers in 1928. Calderón’s pictures radiate a haunting stillness, showing the camp’s current state of decay and hinting at its tragic past. This and other works are accompanied by detailed texts that offer deeper context. La Fiebre del Banano / Banana Craze uses its dynamic, extensively researched online interface to its advantage, encouraging viewers to explore and discover at their own pace. [...]

What I find most interesting in vampire-as-protagonist stories is seeing the world through the eyes of a character who is a walking time abyss - even a vampire "just" a few centuries old comes from a world drastically different than the one we live in, and in case of REALLY old characters or characters originating in particular regions (like Precumbian Americas) they may be they only ones understanding how the world used to be - THAT'S an unfantomable level of isolation and loneliness. (1/2)
(2/2) For the very reason I hold a grudge towards towards modern Western authors of sympathetic vampire fiction, as we meet 20th century vamp after 20th century vamp, and the occassional older characters are out of focus and not expanded upon. What's the point of immortality if you'd still be alive as a mortal? And why focus on a human teenager discovering the vampires and not vampires themselves? Compared to somebody who spoke classical Latin as a mother language, teens are boring!
Hi Anon,
the longer I think about it, the more I think that certain too common set ups ended up boring and repetitive because there was no daring intention behind them. Not to say, the idea of immortals from distant ages aren't interesting, more on that later, although the idea of 20th of vampires is per se not a bad one in itself. So, from my perspective, 20th century vampire after 20th century vampire had a preventable appearance during the Twilight craze, and the many not too unsuccessful copycats. The creators of these works were much more interested in the (arousing) selling potential of the current creature trend for a specifically teenage audience than actually the idea of the monster itself/the actual horror. Like, the 20th century way a century of radical changes within short periods of time. The fall of European monarchic imperialism, two major wars, many movements for more autonomy on personal to national scale, the rapid development and daily installment of technologies. Such could make for an interesting witness of radical cultural, geopolitical, technological shifts. Perhaps also one who can become easily overwhelmed how constant and swift the culture they're known to changes, isolating them as nothing learnt as human remains a constant. Your idea to be an isolated witness sounds great! Especially a Precumbian American vampire witnessing all the social shifts, perhaps also how the mythology about them specifically changes with cultural shifts. The idea you present of a narrating witness over ages is nothing but fascinating as well as deeply melancholic. The idea of vampirism is a state of constant preservation with progress, as there's life with development and change, what would it make for an interesting struggle for a static being overrun my constant development of the world around them. Would they forever by stuck in the time they were alive? How alienating, alien other living people would be around them then. Oh, speaking of Western cashgrab writing trends using vampires during the Twilight phase... More lore specific to certain regions would be so interesting. What would the concept of "vampiric" behavior be in different cultures and different times? (Given that Le Fanu and Stoker, as predominantly known writers of the first vampire novels, were likely more influenced by Irish folklore much less than actual Orthodox concepts from Romania, there's potential for also digging closer into singular concepts of vampirism than thinking of certain famous vampires as essential archetype.)

I decided to do a list of the top manga series I’ve read so far. This is purely for my own entertainment and in no particular order.
Tumblr media
1. Ten Count
This might be cringe but I love BL a lot. Ten Count is a complete series and I finished it practically right away. It’s hot, yes, but I feel like the portrayal of mental illness in this series is handled pretty well. Really it had me in tears near the end, but I’m a sap.

2. Chobits
Perhaps another controversial choice? I bought the dark horse comics omnibus and finished the second one in one night. Really on the surface it’s kind of stupid. Falling in love with pretty robots? Boring and weird. But CLAMP imo just hits it out of the park with this one. It takes that insecurity that women feel being compared to these robots who have been modeled to be the perfect female companion in every way and addresses that. It could also be seen as an analogy (if that’s the term) for just normal human insecurity when faced with anyone we perceive as better than us. Also I thought it was a good metaphor for accepting the fact people can’t choose who they fall in love with and that’s valid. I infer this because of CLAMP’s other works like Wish and even Cardcaptor Sakura. Anyway Hideki is a sex crazed young adult male but he vows to be true to Chi who he can’t be with in that way. Talk about true love.

3. Kimetsu no Yaiba
Ah. My favorite series ever. No lie. Demon Slayer is such a fascinating and well woven tale. I think the overall theme of humanity’s spirit being unbreakable in the face of so much pain is just... idk I feel the more I like something the harder it is for me to talk about it. Okay let’s try again. Tanjiro is our main character and probably one of my favorite characters ever. He is so sweet and fights so hard. He does have weaknesses (though not many) which make him slightly more relatable than he could be. I believe the love he has for his family is what keeps Nezuko from completely giving into her demonic urges. Love is another theme here as well. Another thing I like about Demon Slayer is how the backstory of many characters are revealed. Tanjiro has pity on the demons after they die because he knows they were once human. The demon’s backstories are some of my favorite. I won’t go into anymore detail because I just can’t formulate the words but anyway highly recommend. This series is complete in Japan but the official English translations haven’t finished coming out in print yet so I haven’t finished it yet.

4. Bungo Stray Dogs
I think the thing I like most about this series is the fact that I am being introduced to famous Japanese authors I wouldn’t have heard about otherwise. In the states are world lit classes are predominantly white with some Latin American exceptions. I only read a Japanese novel my senior year of university because my professor had taught in Japan for many years and insisted we read Snow Country. Moving on. There is action in this manga but also tons of hilarious moments. The dynamics between the characters is also priceless. Chuuya and Dazai... don’t get me started. I am also obsessed with the Light Novel spin offs. I’ve read manga volumes 1 through 8 and currently our beloved detectives are fighting against the Guild whose members are based on authors from the English speaking world. Like the Japanese characters these Guild members have powers that the author based off of their respective works. I just find that very clever.

5. Rin-ne
From the beloved creator for so many iconic manga series comes this little gem. I find it so funny. So funny it’s almost absurd, but it always cheers me up. I believe it’s already complete in Japan with 40 volumes? But I’m too lazy to look it up. I’m also aware that real fans go by chapters not volumes but again I am lazy.

6. Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun
The title turned me off. Toilet bound? But I was unaware of the common tale of Hanaka-san of the toilet. Now I am. This series is at times sweet, funny and slightly scary. I don’t regret picking it up.
