Remember to treat your Laurel well! Give her a healthy lifestyle and plenty of enrichment and she'll live a long and happy life with you~
Silly redraw I did to teach myself Inkscape that ended up taking on an aesthetic of its own, reference under the cut:

Okay, for those who have been enjoying my Critical Role fic -- specifically the ones centering on Cassandra de Rolo -- now that the great big longfic is done, it's time to come clean.
Here's the deal: I live in New York City. In Queens, specifically. And there's a couple of names that crop up on street signs in Queens, perfectly ordinary names, except that, well ...
... they're kind of doubletake-inducing, sometimes, if you're familiar with Vox Machina.
So after the fifth or sixth time this doubletake happened to me, I said you know what, fine, and decided to lean into it. Which is why, in forgive us the days forgotten to fear, every time I needed to name a new side character, I consulted a list I made from looking at a map of Queens. Hence characters with names like Hollis, Maspeth, Bellerose (shortened to Bell but appearing once in its original form), Linden, Malba, Roslyn, Auburndale, Laurelton, Meadowmere, Albans ...
I've been quietly giggling about this, and expecting to be called out on it, for years.

MWW Artwork of the Day (3/22/24)
Grace Spaulding John (American, 1890-1972)
Patterns: Portrait of Ruth Pershing Uhler (1932)
Oil on canvas, 151.4 x 136.1 cm.
The Houston Museum of Fine Arts
Grace John prepared her own canvases; one of her hallmarks was her brown linen canvases prepared with rabbit-skin glue, a technique taught her by Hawthorne at Laurelton. She painted in the traditional manner, out of doors, seated in front of her subject, quickly making a small preparatory sketch and then working on the prepared canvas. She favored brilliant colors, broad brushstrokes, and occasional thick areas of paint applied with a palette knife. She used many media -- oil, pastel, conté, charcoal, pen and ink, and watercolor. In addition to her use of such techniques as etching and lithography, she was one of the first artists to use plexiglass as a medium.

Kevin O’Conner (Kevin Bernhardt) had arrived in Port Charles with his brother Dr. Patrick O’Connor. They moved into Bobbie Spencer’s brownstone apartments along with her stepdaughter Terry Brock. Kevin, Patrick and Terry were all from a small town called Laurelton. Kevin and Terry fell in love and got engaged. But Terry was haunted by memories from her past. After Terry’s grandmother was found murdered, Kevin was arrested on suspicion when it was discovered that he was left half her fortune in the will. Kevin went on trial for the murder when a witness was called, a mousy librarian named Lucy Coe. Lucy claimed she never saw Kevin the day of the murder, but it later turned out to be a lie. She and Kevin, it turned out, were having an affair. Kevin had planned to marry Terry, the other beneficiary of her grandmother’s fortune and murder her on their honeymoon, then run off with Lucy. After fighting Frisco Jones and escaping, he went after Terry. She was saved by Jake Meyers but it was Terry who hit Kevin with a boulder, sending him to his death. (1986).

What a contrast! To the left is the place that I left to be in the shelter. I kind of feel like Moses (in the Bible) must have felt when he left living in the palace and ended up living in the wilderness then living with his Father in law in crowded less luxurious conditions.
It is 9:26 pm January 14, 2023
But while you are on your journey to fulfill your purpose, expect to be taken out of your comfort zone. How am I out of my comfort zone? Well, let me count the ways:
1- I am in a new borough; Brooklyn, I was use to and born in the borough of Queens, NY. My entire family is in Queens. My job is in Queens. I am comfortable in Queens, NY. At least I’m still in New York City. It is just two (2) buses (picture shown) and one trai ride away. Actually, at this exact moment (9:32 pm) I have EXACTLY 1 hour and 28 minutes to get back to the BBC SHELTER in Brooklyn. The exact part of Brrooklyn it is is Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
I no longer have the luxury of my own private house. When I lived in the houses in Laurelton, Queens, I had the entire house to myself. Now I am living with between 100 to 200 people. I have gone through interruptions in my life. It’s exciting. If you live your life trying to please God, fulfill another mission that God has you go through is exciting!

The Foundling - Ann Leary
Historical fiction based on a real eugenics asylum.
Mary Engle is thrilled to be offered a job as a secretary at Nettleton State Village, an institution where intellectually challenged girls can be properly cared for, headed by the fiercely progressive Dr. Agnes Vogel. An outspoken feminist and lecturer, Vogel quickly becomes a figure of Mary's admiration and loyalty.
However, when Mary recognizes one of the inmates as her childhood friend, the polished facade of the Village and Dr. Vogel begin to crumble as Mary uncovers the truth of the injustices they perpetuate.
Based on the historical figure of Dr. Mary Wolfe, a very progressive feminist of her day: she was one of the first female psychiatrists, a leader of the women's suffrage movement, and an outspoken advocate for women's civil rights, health, and welfare.
She was also a eugenicist.
The Laurelton State Village for Feeble-Minded Women of Childbearing Age, where Wolfe was superintendent, was a place where girls and women were locked away from society to prevent them having children who would inherit their mental defects. In reality, it wasn't just women who were deemed to have low intelligence who were sent there, but anyone considered "morally defective" — i.e. women who had children out of wedlock, prostitutes, lesbians.
This novel is a fictional account of one of many eugenics asylums in 1920s America and depicts the deplorable and horrifying practices that those beliefs naturally lead to. It manages not to be as dark as I was expecting from the subject matter, and it has a wonderfully satisfying and exciting ending.
