Hi, I'm just having a rough day and just wanted to vent, and also wanted to know if I was overreacting
So my 16th birthday is on Friday (the 3rd) and last week me and my Best friend made plans for her to sleepover but she said she probably won't be able to come over and I was on the phone with my mom about this because my mom wants to go to a Chinese place for my birthday and stuff and asked if she's (my Best friend) was still coming so I asked and she replied and basically I just started crying because I want my best friend to be with me for my birthday and it's not like she hasn't bailed on sleepovers before but It's my birthday so it kinda hurt then my mom heard me crying and I told her she's not coming then mom basically said to stay positive and other stuff like how she (my mom) told my sister that she's in pain and can't take care of her kids but my sister doesn't care and that I should be grateful that I don't have a disability, and on top of all this I might have a ear infection and currently feel like garbage.
Hey there,
Firstly, I hope you had a great 16th birthday!
It can really hurt when we have something so big like a birthday coming up and really, really want a friend to help us celebrate but then they cancel for whatever reason right before. It can be tough because even though we have our family, it can just be really nice to have someone we care about and have a good friendship with to also be there on our special day. So you are definitely not alone in feeling as you are, many people have been in a similar if not the same situation before, and it just really hurts and sucks big time when plans fall through!
I am sorry that your Mum kind of disregarded your feelings so easily. This would have only built onto your already growing feelings of distraught and feelings of hurt and pain. In the moment I do not think you were over reacting at all and your Mum being insensitive to you wasn’t helpful either, but now that several months have passed since your birthday, how are you feeling about it all now?
I know that the feelings of hurt may still be there but looking back maybe your friend had a reason to cancel on your sleepover for your birthday. I cannot speak for your friend and I of course do not know hers or your situation, but I know for me that making and sticking to commitments/ plans I have previously made, really hard. I find it tough to do these things due to my anxiety and just really overthinking everything in a not so great light. Again, I do not know your friend but has she shed any light on why she cancelled and has cancelled on past sleepovers with you? It might be a good conversation to have perhaps.
In regards to your Mum, staying positive when you are already feeling hurt and low is really hard. It can almost feel like a kick to the stomach and can make us feel incredibly unheard/ like our feelings aren’t important too. If this happens every now and again maybe this would be worthy of a conversation with your Mum, so at the very least she understands where you are at and what is helpful and not helpful for you in different situations, and maybe even you can communicate with her what would be a helpful response from her? Just an idea!
I really hope that you didn’t get an ear infection but if so, I hope you had a speedy recovery!
I hope that this has helped a bit and please do let us know if we can help to support you in any other way!
I’m thinking of you and hope that you are going well!
Take care,
Lauren

"Did you get the flowers?" Mary asked as she sat on the couch flipping through the tv.
Frank patted his chest and then his jeans in search of his keys.
"What?"
Mary kept changing the channels without a beat,"Frank. You're supposed to buy a girl flowers on the date."
Frank furrowed his brow, "Uh...no. Have you seen my keys? Really?"
Mary rolled her eyes, "She's not gonna kiss you goodnight."
He searched on the kitchen table and rummaged through old mail when a knock at the door interrupted his concentration. As he bee-lined to the door, Mary turned off the tv and hopped off the couch to grab her latest book she'd chiseled her way through for the week.
Frank swung the door open abruptly and started you as you stood at their doorstep.
"Hey! You made it, great!" Frank exclaimed. "Sorry, my head's a mess."
Mary now situated herself at the kitchen table and shouted over her shoulder, "It's because he hasn't been on a real date in over six months."
Frank turned red," What? No...I mean yes, but jeez, Mary. Remember we talked about how to read a room?"
He turned back to you, "Come in, come in. I'm just trying to find my keys."
You chuckled and nodded to the doorknob which held his set of keys and he smacked his forehead.
As you walked into the house, you noticed little knickknacks here and there on shelves. And books. Mountains of books everywhere. Piling on top of each other.
"Hi Mary," you smiled as she kept her back to you, nose deep in her book.
"Mary…" Frank scolded as he put his hands on his hips.
"Hi, Ms. Y/N."
You smiled as you approached her, "May I sit?"
She nodded in agreement and you pulled out a chair.
"I brought you something…" you say as you rummage through your canvas bag for your book on crabs. "Well, actually I was hoping you could help me...see…"
Frank smiled as he saw the two of you bonding. He caught himself admiring you more than he'd like to admit as he needed to head off to his date soon. He appreciated your assistance with babysitting Mary as the two of you first met at the local library. His date, Justine, was a waitress at the bar he would visit from time to time. While there was a chemistry between them, it was really just through vanity. With you, he had come to know you at a deeper level: the way you’d squint or furrow your brow when reviewing your clipboard. Or how adorable you’d look chewing on the cap of your pen when trying to finalize an email at your desk. He saw that you loved the color yellow, considering how many skirts and cardigans you’d paired together. And that you were a romantic at heart - the classics were your fave to read and how’d you get lost in historical facts when he had first asked you what your hobbies were. Seeing how a beautiful person you were, inside and out, he now regretted asking Justine out with you on his mind.
Tumblr media
Mary's eyes scanned the books of quantum physics and mathematics. At first you thought perhaps she had another book instead, but as you watched her day in and day out, you were astounded at the tiny prodigy and her ability to ascertain such knowledge at her age. You'd correct the cataloging errors for the day and find her reading for enjoyment it seemed.
Then one day Frank arrived. Mary had always left on her own, but as if it were any old regular day, the handsome uncle came to retrieve his stellar niece. He had a warmness to him. His dark brown hair and beard complemented his face, one that was obvious in an overall attractiveness. And he was kind, he showed that by adopting his niece after her mother had passed away and truly nurturing her gifted talent. You learned he fixed boats for a living and lived not too far from the library. You smiled at the odd pair together, they somehow seemed to work however.
As you checked their books out, Mary tiptoed over the large walnut desk and glanced at you.
"You're pretty," she stated.
"Mary. What did we say?" Frank tsked, embarrassed, but didn't disagree with her observation.
"What? Frank, you told me that I need to state facts, rather than assumptions. And I am stating a fact that Ms. Y/LN is pretty. Do you think she's pretty, Frank?"
Frank coughed into his fist and blushed, you smirked, half wanting to know his answer, half laughing inside of how Mary was so blunt.
"Yes, Ms. Y/LN is very pretty," he replied and gazed at your eyes. He licked his lips and you had to turn away feeling flushed. You closed the last book and placed it in Mary's backpack.
"All set," you replied. "These are due on the 23rd."
Frank zipped up the backpack and slung it over his broad shoulder. "Thanks, we'll see you tomorrow."
"Oh?" You replied as Mary looked at you both attempting to assess the flirtation occuring before her eyes.
"Well, yeah, she loves it here, I mean. And we have a few other books to return."
"Yes, we'll see you tomorrow. Bye, Mary."
"Bye," Mary replied and skipped off.
Tumblr media
Frank showed up every day after that. You found it endearing, but not wanting to read into something that wasn't there, you focused your attention on Mary. That only seemed to peak his interest further. While he had a knack for attracting women, his heart was never in it for the long haul since the minute they found out about Mary, they'd either run away from the possible responsibility, or Mary would run them off herself. But with you it was different. You were genuine and kind to Mary. Knowing quite well of her mathematical abilities, you would challenge her in other areas: art, zoology, history. You found that while she could read more college level books than any person you met in the small town, she still was a child wanting to learn about all other aspects of life. You'd sit together at a table: you, reviewing inventory spreadsheets for the latest book fair and her, immersed in some book that would put you to sleep at night.
"Frank, you should ask Ms. Y/LN out," Mary stated one day as the three of you sat at a table together. Frank practically choked and you shook your head, secretly wanting to say yes.
"Aw, Mary. Well, I bet Ms. Y/LN has guys lined up at her door every night."
"No, she doesn't," Mary replied as she turned a page of her book. Frank laughed and placed his hand on Mary's shoulder, pretending to shake her.
"Well, actually Ms. Y/LN…" he said as your heart skipped a beat.
"Y/N," you interrupted. "You can call me Y/N. I feel we're on a first name basis now considering you're here everyday."
“Y/N,” he smiled. His hair was more combed today. You had noticed that he seemed to be disheveled when you first met him, however either Mary’s tactics were rubbing off on him, or it was your pure imagination.
“Yes?” you piped. You haven't been regularly dating lately. There just weren’t many prospects these days. Not ones that could keep up with conversation, let alone intellect. So instead, you found yourself immersed with your favorite fictional characters in the sea of books you’d grown to know and love.
His brow furrowed, he seemed nervous and he picked at the edge of a book as he attempted to gather his thoughts.
“Do you have a favorite book?” Mary interrupted as Frank turned to her, but seemingly glad she saved him from embarrassment.
“Do I have a favorite book? Hmmm...” you thought and a childish smile appeared on your face. “I have many favorite books, Mary...The Velveteen Rabbit, The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe…”
“Yeah, but what’s like your most favorite book?”
You extended your hand out to her and she willingly accepted. Frank perked up his interest as he watched the two of you scamper off into the fiction area. Curious, he stood up and decided to follow. The two of you giggled quietly as you made your way around the columns, your free hand lightly ghosting over the spines of the books. The subtle scent of paper and dust permeated Frank’s sense of smell. He was more of an outdoorsy person nowadays as he had left behind his scholarly days teaching in Boston. It’s where Mary learned most from, his appetite to keep learning, vernacular, and wit . You slowed down and perused a row until you found your favorite book.
“Aha!” you exclaim and hid the book behind your back as Mary jumped up and down with excitement. “Now, I’m not sure if this is something you’d be interested in, it’s more for ten year olds in my opinion. However, I know you’re a very mature young lady and I find that you’d quite enjoy the story if you give it a chance.”
Frank smiled, perplexed as to what book could possibly be your favorite. You pulled the book from behind and showed Mary.
“Little Women,” she stated. “By Louisa May Alcott.”
“Yes. It’s a beautiful story, really. About sisters and the trials they endure during the American Civil War. There’s friendship, love, and growth.”
Mary bunched her nose, you could tell she was on the fence about whether she’d enjoy a story about fictional sisters and yucky love stuff. You started to pull it away, however she grabbed it from your hands. You laughed and looked at Frank who leaned onto the columns and folded his arms.
“Seems someone is wanting to expand their horizons,” he chuckled.
“So it seems,” you smiled back as Mary skipped off to return to the table leaving the two of you behind.
“I’m more of a Lord of the Rings man myself.”
“Really?” you responded playfully. “The Hobbit included, right?”
“Of course,” he scoffed. “I think I actually just read that one to be honest, I just wanted to impress you. I spent my time reading Calvin and Hobbes more, probably how Mary learned my sarcasm.”
You laugh and touch his forearm as a reflex, but quickly realize and pull away. The spark that you felt when you connected was undeniable. You felt butterflies with him standing next to you and you hoped he hadn’t noticed your inability to remain calm.
“Y/N…” he started to say nervously. “Would it be alright if I called ya? Maybe we can get together sometime?”
“Oh, umm,” you replied, caught off guard. While you definitely had caught feelings for the handsome man, you never would have thought it’d be reciprocated. You stuttered, trying to gather your response.
Your hesitation threw him off, and he quickly replied, “I mean...like to sit for Mary or whatever. She really likes you.”
“Of course...yes,” you reply defeated in hopes that he would have asked you out. Instead of asking why he didn’t, you started to walk back to Mary. Frank scrunched his face in frustration in knowing he missed his shot with you and blurted out the most platonic question instead. He realized as well and quickly shoved his hands into his jeans pockets and followed your lead.
Tumblr media
Frank watched as you comfortably plopped yourself next to Mary on the couch, dreading that he had to meet up with Justine. He’d much rather relax on the couch with you and the rugrat, enjoying some silly kids movie together.
You peered over the couch, “Is it okay if she has popcorn?”
“What? Yes,” Mary said flatly and jumped off the couch to the kitchen.
“Okay, miss. But not too much sugar. Bedtime is still at 9,” Frank replied as you shrugged your shoulders.
“It’s the weekend, Frank,” Mary called out from the kitchen.
“Yes, but-“
“Will you be late?” you asked.
He looked at you in surprise, “Um, no. Probably before ten?”
“Okay, have fun.”
“It’s Y/N’s birthday,” Mary replied, carrying two coke bottles and a bag of jelly beans.
You shook your head in regret of ever telling the child when your birthday was. She was so inquisitive that day, asking about all your favorites: food, animals, books, and now birthday.
“It’s your birthday?!” Frank asked.
“Yeah, no big deal.”
“How old are you?” Mary asked as she set the drinks on the coffee table and then remembered how Frank would scold her about leaving water rings. She grabbed the coasters and placed them under the bottles.
“Mary!” Frank detested and placed his hands on his hips.
“How old do you think I am?” You tease, waving off to Frank that it was okay.
“Older than Justine, that’s for sure. She said she was 24, but looks 34. But she acts like she's 12. She hasn't even read anything on quantum physics, she thought wave mechanics was something Frank was working on with a boat,” she said coolly and popped a few jelly beans into her mouth. She nestled herself back into the couch cushions and wiggled her feet.
“Mary Elizabeth!” Frank’s voice boomed as he entered the living room.
Mary leaned over to whisper to you, “Frank says I'm not supposed to correct older people. Nobody likes a smart-ass.”
“And a busy body,” he huffed.
You nodded and laughed quietly, entertained at his expense.
“Well I am 32,” you smiled and looked at your watch, “As of one hour ago as a matter of fact.”
“That’s good. You’re much more mature than Justine and a better fit for him. Happy Birthday.”
“Thank you.”
“Mary…that’s it. You’re on your last warning,” Frank bellowed. “Don’t make me let Y/N go home and then you’re stuck with me tonight.”
“What? No! Okay. I’m sorry,” she lamented and folded her arms.
Frank’s demeanor changed as he turned to you, “I hadn’t known it was your birthday. Don’t feel pressured to sit for her tonight if you have other plans.” Secretly he wanted to cancel on Justine and spend the night celebrating you instead.
“Oh it’s okay! It kind of appeared out of nowhere. I usually go back home and celebrate with friends and family, but my schedule didn’t permit it this year. Next year, perhaps.”
“What’s your favorite dessert?” Mary asked as she chewed on another handful of jelly beans.
“Red velvet cheesecake,” you smiled. “I have a sweet tooth.”
Tumblr media
Frank couldn’t concentrate on his date with Justine. His mind was elsewhere. On you. Justine grazed her hand as they sat next to each other at the bar. He seemed unfazed by her gesture and looked at his watch, 9:14pm. Would it be too obvious if he cut the date short that he was into you? He coughed and took a swig of his beer.
“Do you wanna come back to my place?” She cooed and bit her lip in anticipation.
“What? Oh actually I was gonna head out. The sitter needed me home by 9:30,” he lied.
“Oh, sitter?”
“Yeah, Mary. Remember? My niece?”
“That’s right. How old is she again?”
“Seven,” He said, annoyed. He recalled they had met once before. The bartender approached them and handed Frank the receipt.
“Hey, do you have any desserts on the menu?”
Justine’s ears perked in curiosity of where he was going with asking about dessert.
The bartender grunted slightly and threw a mangled tri-fold menu and Frank grabbed it quickly.
“Buddy, ring me up for the red velvet cupcake.”

The One in Which Thor has A Birthday

Summary: The Team decides to throw Thor an Earth Birthday.

“I do not understand how it will be a proper celebration without horns full of mead, fire-eating acrobatics, and rousing battle songs.” Said, Thor. He was sitting in the only armchair in the main common room of Avengers Tower. By sitting; Thor was perched as best he could, the chair looking like it might call it quits and give up supporting his large frame at any minute. The chair was not having a good day, but, Thor was. It was his birthday.
“He has a point,” Tony commented from the couch across from Thor. He took a sip of the whiskey, swirling the rocks in the glass. Steve shot him an annoyed glance.
“By normal, I don’t mean Stark normal.” He said. “Not everyone has parties like you.”
“Oh, and yours was just a blast in the Depression was it? What’d you get, a used pair of socks and a slice of cake to share?” Said Tony, egging Steve on.
“They were actually new socks thank you.” Said Steve. He turned his attention back to Thor, who had downed his own glass of whiskey and was refilling it.
“All I am saying, is I appreciate the sediment, but nothing can compare to an Asgardian party.” Said, Thor.
“Again. He has a point.” Tony comment. Steve sighed.
“Regardless, we…” Tony cut him off.
“You…Clint and Natasha” Tony corrected.
“We… “ Steve said again, emphasizing his gesture to include Tony.
“thought it would be fun to throw you an American party.”
“It probably will be fun.” Said, Thor. “Anything that Clint does is fun.”
“Speaking of, where are our little birdman and lady spider?” Tony asked.
“They are actually doing all the party stuff.” Said Steve.
“Why? Because you’re outdated?” Tony asked. Steve looked sheepishly at the ground. “Something like that. My job was to entertain Thor.”
“Well entertain me mortal!” Thor commended. He had just downed the second glass of whiskey. “Yes! Entertain us mortal.” Echoed Tony.
That’s when the armchair gave out and Thor crashed to the ground. Surround in the sad remains of the chair Thor beamed.
“Now it is a party!” Boomed Thor.
It looked as if Clint and Natasha had bought the the entirety of Party City and brought it back to the Tower. The living room was decked out in all the cheap decorations. Green and yellow streamers hung from the ceiling. Gold metallic balloons spelling Thor were tied to the table. Confetti was thrown across the floor, the chairs, and any surface that was available. The table itself had a large cake with “Happy Birthday Mighty Thor” written across it in orange frosting. The paper plates had dinosaurs on them.
“We were going to get ones with his face on them, but they only had plates of Ironman and You, so we figured dinosaurs were a better bet. It was either that or trucks” Said Clint to Steve.
“What are these fierce lizards!” Asked Thor, examining one of the plates. “And where can I have one as a pet?”
“They are extinct.” Said Natasha.
“That is sad indeed. Why do I have dead lizards on my plates?” Bemoaned Thor.
“Maybe I should have gone with the trucks.” Said Clint shrugging.
“Here. Put this on.” Natasha said handing Thor a paper party hat. Thor took it and eyed it suspiciously.
“What is this tiny paper hat?” He asked.
“It's a birthday hat. You wear it because you are the birthday boy.”
“It's designed to humiliate you,” Tony said.
“Put it on,” Natasha ordered.
Thor placed it on his head. “You have to pull the string under the chin or it will fall off.” She said. Thor followed her instructions, pulling the tiny elastic string under his chin. It was too small and bit into his neck.
“Are Midgard parties always filled with pain and dead lizards?” Thor asked, tugging at the string.
“No! It’s..” Steve started but Natasha cut up off handing Thor a noisemaker.
“Blow.” She said.
“Now it's a party,” Tony said into his glass.
Thor took a deep breath and blew into the noisemaker. The paper unrolled and a raspberry sound came out. Thor started laughing uncontrollably.
“This is incredible.” He proclaimed. He blew it again. “I feel like a mighty warrior calling my men into battle in my tiny pointy hat.” He blew it again.
“What is that thing even called?” Bruce asked.
“I don’t know.” Said Clint. “I’ve always called it the birthday noise thing”
“It’s a party horn!” Exclaimed Thor. He tooted it again.
“Okay! It's game time!” Said Natasha.
“Tell me we are playing grown-up party games like beer pong and not…” Tony began.
“Musical chairs!” Natasha interrupted.
“I know this one!” Said Steve. “I was really bad at it.”
“Are you still?” Asked Clint.
“What are musical chairs?” Thor asked. “And do I get to blow this tiny horn?”
“If everyone would be quiet for a moment I would explain.” Said Natasha.
She explained the rules of the game and asked Jarvis to play the music, stopping at random intervals. They all stood around the set of chairs. Jarvis started the music. No one moved.
“You have to move,” Natasha said. “And you have to dance. Or you are disqualified.”
Thor started to dance and the circle moved slowly. Suddenly the music stopped and they all flung themselves at the nearest chairs. Bruce easily sat in one. Thor and Steve were right behind him. Tony had managed to hardly move and sat in his original chair. Natasha slipped in the last second, beating Clint to the last chair.
“I let you have it.” He said.
“Yeah whatever Birdman,” Natasha said.
“This is fun!” Said, Thor. He blew the party horn. “Another time!”
“Since I lost that round. I am going to start drinking.” Said Clint.
“I would join you brother. But I must win this game and need my wits about me. I do not trust any of you.” He said. The music began again and so did the next round. It didn’t end nearly as well, however. The chair collapsed under the weight of both fighting Steve and Thor, dropping both men solidly on the ground.
“Do all Midgardian birthdays involve breaking chairs?” Thor asked.
“No. Your fat ass is just too heavy for them.” Tony said comfortably from his chair, which was suspiciously the same one as the last time.
“To be fair to the chair, I don’t think it was built to support a god and a super soldier.” Said Clint.
“Oh, what do you know? You are out anyway.” Tony said.
Steve and Thor helped each other up, laughing. Thor gave Steve a large huge.
“Well fought brother, but sadly not enough.” Steve grinned. “I fully expect a rematch.”
“And you shall have it!” Said, Thor. Steve went over to join Clint as the game continued. Next out was Bruce. One look from Natasha was enough for him to yield the seat and proclaim himself out. The fourth round ended with Natasha yelling at Tony who was still sitting and hadn’t moved.
“ I call BS,” Steve said. Tony is cheating.
“I am not,” Tony said. “I just have really good timing.”
“Lies.” Bruce coughed into his drink.
“Actually Sir, you are not playing fairly.” Said Jarvis.
“Like a knife in the back,” Tony said. He stepped out of the circle, dragging his chair with him. He joined the group of men who were out and drinking.
“Okay Lighting Boy, it's just you and me,” Natasha growled.
“I’ve been waiting for this my whole life,” Thor said, readying himself on the balls of his feet.
“You only just learned about this game fifteen minutes ago.” Tony protested. The last round began. The music got faster and Natasha and Thor moved quicker, darting around the single chair.
“There is no way either of them come out of this alive,” Bruce said. It was a fierce round. Then Clint threw a piece of popcorn at Natasha. She swatted it away. He threw another one. She turned to find out the origin of the popcorn and at that moment the music ended. Thor lunged for the chair. Natasha, momentarily distracted was a second behind him. She jumped, landing on top of Thor, clinging to his back. She tried to slide down as he sat, attempting to reach the chair first.
“I will squish you like bug human,” Thor said, sitting backward.
“Is that a threat?” Natasha asked, maneuvering herself behind him.
“Anybody want to stop that?” Tony asked. The others shrugged. “Yeah, figured. It’s entertaining.” Tony said. Eventually, the two ended up in a fit of laughter, collapsing against each other.
“Draw?” Natasha asked.
“If it makes you feel better about losing. Sure.” Said, Thor.
“I only let you win because it was your birthday,” Natasha said, untangling herself from Thor and the chair.
“As long as my chair is in one piece,” Tony said.
“Anyone want to play Twister?” Clint offered.
“I do.” Boomed Thor.
“NO!” Shouted everyone else.
“It's time for cake,” Tony said. Thor liked the cake. He loved that it was lit on fire first and there was singing, though he had a thing or two to say about the quality of the singing. His favorite game was the pin the tail on the donkey. Turns out that if superhuman individuals have enough to drink and are spun enough times they are equally bad at the game. The wall was covered with new holes and the donkey was still tail-less
As the day wore on, the drinks and cake slowly disappeared. Eventually, the evening found them comfortably settled on the couches, a small pile of gifts around Thor.
“So? What do you think of an Earth birthday party now?” Tony asked.
“I am pleasantly surprised,” Thor said.
“As am I.” Said Steve.
“Why? Because they still have party horns?” Clint asked, tooting on his.
“Yes actually. It’s all very familiar. Nice to know some things don’t change.”
“Thank you all for celebrating with me,” Thor said.
Tony’s phone beeped.
“Tt's here!” He said. “I got you one more last-minute present.” He ushered everyone back into the common room, where the remains of Thor’s chair were still sadly broken on the floor.
“What are we looking at?” Clint asked, eyeing the broken chair. Tony pointed. In the room was a new chair. A bigger chair. A Thor-sized armchair.
“Just try not to break this one alright?” Tony asked.
Thor beamed. “Is that a challenge?” He asked.
“No it's a threat.”
“I accept.”
“Happy Birthday Thor.”

AN 2: I will not be doing every episode of the series. That might actually kill me. More than likely I’ll pick the big episodes and then add in other one shot/ happy moments not included in the series. Anything currently listed is planned. More will be added later.
AN 3: If there is no link attached to a title, then that story is going to be written eventually but it’s there for me to plan accordingly :)

drunk lauren returns! we love her (and sober lauren too)
do you think the diaz boys have any family traditions (for holidays, birthdays, etc.)?
SHE’S BACK BABY it’s weird getting drunk when your parents live in the same house but whatever we’re making it work!!!
i think chris’ birthday is a no school day if it’s on a week day. eddie let’s him sleep in and they go out to breakfast to the diner that makes the fluffiest pancakes in the whole wide world. and then they do whatever chris wants — art museum, aquarium, riding the ferris wheel at the pier for 4 straight hours, WHATEVER. and then they come home and do dinner/presents with abuela and pepa and buck and anyone else that’s available. and every year it’s the same cake: yellow cake with chocolate frosting and rainbow sprinkles. and they both love it so much because they get to do it all together 🥺🥺🥺

Holding on to the Memories
So, this is my first time writing, so forgive me if it’s terrible. I have been in the twilight mood lately, so this is my twilight fanfic. Also, I am always open to story requests, suggestions for future chapters, and helpful criticism.
Summary: Lauren is the Cullen’s adopted baby sister. Her life has always been a dream. One day, while the everyone is out hunting, life isn’t a dream anymore.
Warnings: Self harm, bullying, very very sad and will make you cry.
Length: pretty long
Chapter 1
Tumblr media
“You guys mean to tell me that I get to be home alone all day?!” I squealed excitedly.
“Yes, dear. We all need to hunt, and Renesmee and Jacob are down at the beach with the rest of the pack.” Carlisle said with a small smile on his face, happy that I was so excited.
“I didn’t think you’d be so happy to get rid of us, brown bear.” Emmett said as he ruffled my hair slightly. I gave him a small glare as he used my nickname from when I was little.
“I am excited, Emmett. This means that I get to control the TV for once.” Everyone started laughing as Emmett frowned at you.
“I don’t control it that much, do I?”
“Yes, you do.” Everyone said in unison.
“Plus,” I started, “I will be free of having 8 vampires watching my every move, there will be no one digging around in my head,” I scowled at Edward who gave me an apologetic look, “and no one will be able to mess with my emotions,” I finished as I glared at Jasper.
“It’s not our fault we’re vampires and you’re our human sister,” Jasper said.
“I know that, but that still doesn’t mean I like it when you mess with my emotions.” I said as I gave him a small scowl. “Nor do I like it when people dig through my head or know what I’m going to do before I even do it. I can never surprise you guys,” I pouted.
“Hey, we act surprised, don’t we?” Edward pointed out.
“It’s not the same!” I complained, earning myself a laugh from everyone. “Okay, you guys should go now. All of your eyes are pitch black. It’s kinda scaring me.”
Everyone laughed again and gave me a hug as they walked out to their cars.
“We’ll be gone until after supper tonight, so you’re on your own for meals.” Esme told me as she gave me one last hug.
“Mom, I know. I’ll be fine. Don’t worry. If I need anything, I’ll call Jacob and Renesmee and they’ll come home. And if something really bad happens, I will call you or dad or Emmett or Jasper or Rose or any of you and you’ll all come running. Don’t worry about me. I’ll be okay.”
“Oh honey, I know you’ll be okay. I just want to be sure.” She gave me another hug and kiss.
“Dad, can you come get Mom?” I called. “Unless you come and get her, I don’t think she’s going to leave.”
“Darling, Lauren will be okay. She’s 15 almost 16, she’ll be alright staying home for one day.” Carlisle said, suddenly appearing at my side.
“Thanks. I know the drill, call Jacob and Renesmee first and then you guys. Now go! Bella and Jasper look like they’re going to snap soon.” I said as I tried to push them to the door.
“Alright, bye sweetheart. We’ll be back before you know it. Just try not to break anything. Don’t do anything Emmett would do.” Carlisle said with a small grin on his face.
“Hey!” Came a shout from outside. I started to giggle because as much as Emmett hated it, Carlisle was right.
“Okay Dad. Bye, love you.” I said as I gave him his last hug. “Bye guys! See you later! Catch a big bear for me, Emmett!”
Everyone shouted out their goodbyes and I love you’s as they drove away. I stood in the doorway for a moment longer and then raced back into the house to enjoy my day alone.
I spent a good portion of the morning wrapping and putting the finishing touches on gifts for my family. It was going to be my 16th birthday in less than a week, but I wanted to give everyone else gifts. I already had everything I could ever want, and all I really wanted for my birthday was to see everyone smile. So I decided to give them all gifts. It also gave me something to work on in my spare time.
I was going to give Alice a snow globe of two sisters ice skating. She and I had started a collection of snow globes together when I was a couple years old. We added to it every time we went on a shopping trip or anytime one of us had a birthday.
Rosalie was going to get a beautiful locket, with an inscription inside that said A sister is worth 1,000 friends. Hopefully she wouldn’t put an embarrassing picture of me in there.
Emmett was going to get the games Cards Against Humanity and What Do You Meme. Little did he know, I was going to kick his butt when I played with him.
For Bella, I got her a new charm for her bracelet. Currently, there are only three charms. Jacob’s wolf, Edward’s diamond heart, and the Cullen crest. I was giving her a small open book, because when I was a kid, she read a lot of books to me and gave me over half of the books in my collection. I owe my love of reading to her.
Edward’s gift was a bit more difficult, but I think he’ll like what I gave him. It was a handmade book of all our favorite songs. My lullaby, both Renesmee and Bella’s lullabies, some of my favorite songs, and a few of his favorite songs. I painted the front cover of the binder with a beautiful collage of music notes and pictures of him and I playing the piano. He didn’t really need the music for all the songs, what with his vampire memory and all, but this way Edward would always have a part of me.
Carlisle had always loved my paintings, so I made him one that he could hang in his office at work. It wasn’t anything too complex, just a rainbow watercolor background and a stethoscope twisted into a heart, but I’m sure he would love it.
For Esme, I made a cookbook filled with my favorite foods that she had made me over the years, and a few new ones for her to try. Like Edward, she didn’t really need the recipes, but she loved having things I made. On the front of the book, I had painted a collage of different foods like a meatball sub, cookies, cupcakes, salad, and lots of other things. Hidden in one of the back pages,  were pictures of the entire family throughout the past 16 years. One when I was a baby, one when I was a toddler, when I was six, 10, 14, and a few weeks ago. It was the perfect gift for a mother.
I wasn’t nearly as close to Jacob as I was to everyone else, but I got him a gift too. He was still my big brother. I gave him my best wolf drawing, and a dog tag with a heart cut out of the middle. That heart was attached to a necklace I would keep.
For Renesmee, I made a box filled with her favorite candy, a photo album of us growing up together, and a best friend forever bracelet. To me, Renesmee was more like my best friend. We had sleepovers together all the time, watched movies all night long while stuffing our faces with junk food, and went everywhere together. Since she didn’t sparkle in the sunlight as much as the rest of the family, I could bring her to places like the beach or an amusement park on a sunny day without drawing attention.
The hardest person to find a gift for was Jasper. For as long as I could remember, Jasper had been the person I turned to for everything. When I scraped my knee when I was little, when I needed help in school, when I was bored out of my mind and wanted someone to play a game with me, it was always Jasper I turned to. I gave him a CD, and a stuffed horse. Jasper said he always loved it when I was singing. Whether I was humming to myself or singing my heart out to my favorite song, he said he had always loved it. So, the CD was full of me singing my favorite songs, and songs he used to sing to me when I was little. The stuffed horse held a speaker inside, so that whenever you squeezed it, you would hear me say “I love you”. I bet that if he could cry, he would.
When I was finished with the gifts, I played the piano and my guitar for a while. Edward was finally teaching me how to play my lullaby on the piano, and I was teaching myself all of my favorite songs on the guitar. I got bored pretty quickly, so I turned on the movie 10 Things I Hate About You, one of my favorites, and made myself lunch.
After lunch, I decided to turn on the TV and see if anything good was on. At that moment, an ad for a new movie came on the TV. I didn’t see what the name was, but I really didn’t want to know. Although I had only seen a few seconds, the image of a “vampire” holding a young girl in a headlock was enough for me. I lived in a world full of vampires and I knew the risks, but I always tried to push them out of my head. Plus, I was always with one of my siblings, or my parents, so I never really had to worry. They would protect me, no matter what. However, at the moment, I was all by myself. My family was the largest coven of vampires, aside from the Volturi, and every vampire that came through this was stopped at our house. Most of the time, my siblings were able to hide with me in my room and keep me safe. But they were probably in Colorado or Wyoming, up in the mountains at this point. What would happen if a rogue vampire came through here? What if they lost all control when they smelled me? What if Jacob and Renesmee couldn’t get to me soon enough to save me?
A million what ifs crossed my mind as my anxiety got a hold of me. I had had attacks like this before, but one of my siblings was always there to help me. Jasper could always calm me down, Edward could answer every question that crossed my mind, and everyone else would just hug me and remind me that everything was okay until I had managed to calm myself down. But I was all alone. Nobody was here to keep me from my own mind, to keep me from spiraling into a dark place. My head was spinning, my stomach hurt, and I could hardly breathe. I raced to the bathroom, running into almost every piece of furniture on my way there.
In less than 5 minutes, I had thrown up everything I had eaten that day. Currently, my stomach was heaving as though it wanted to throw up, but there was nothing left in my stomach. I began focusing on my breathing, trying to calm myself down. If I could get my breathing under control, I could work through every question in my head. As soon as I had calmed myself enough to make the room stop spinning, I heard my phone buzz. Hoping it was Alice, checking up on me, I reached up to grab it from the edge of the sink.
Much to my dismay, it wasn’t Alice. It was the complete opposite. Maggie was texting me once again. For years, she had been making fun of me and tried to bully me into doing whatever she wanted me to do. When my family moved here to Forks, when I was in sixth grade, she hated the fact that I was getting most of the attention. She didn’t do much harm for the first year and a half, but she kept looking for things to make me snap. She began breaking into my locker, ripping up my papers and writing insults about the teachers on others. The teachers never believed me, so I was always getting in trouble. After I had successfully gotten suspended at the end of seventh grade, she stopped, for about a year. Then things got worse. Way worse. Every day, I would find an insult about my clothes, body, family, everything. I tried my hardest to ignore it, but I just couldn’t. Now that almost all of my siblings, other than Renesmee who pretended to be only 2 years older than me and would graduate in May, had graduated and weren’t in school with me anymore, Maggie took that to heart. She had sent me a picture and a video of me. I knew I shouldn’t look at it, but Maggie liked to blackmail me and post crap about me online, so I looked, just in case she would try to do something. There was a message with the picture.
Wow, look at this girl in a swimsuit. She looks absolutely terrible. Look at the stretch marks on her stomach, she’s so fat!
That was the reason I never wore a bikini. I didn’t necessarily think I was fat, but I did have some small stretch marks on the bottom of my stomach. I was already self conscious, but this just made things a whole lot worse. I didn’t want to look at the video, but I did.
It was a video of me and my ex boyfriend James. We didn’t date long, but we did for a few months last year. It was a video of us making out in a closet. I remember that, we played seven minutes of heaven at Maggie’s birthday party last year. Why the hell did she video tape it? My phone buzzed with one last text from Maggie.
It almost looks like they’re having sex. Wouldn’t it be a shame if someone posted it on the school Instagram feed for everyone to see?
At that moment, there was a new post to the school Instagram page by Maggie. That bitch! Why the hell would she do that. I chucked my phone across the bathroom as hard as I could, managing to shatter the screen and a tile fell off the wall. Sobs racked my body. I couldn’t breathe. The only way to breathe again was to take my mind off what had happened. But how? That’s when I spotted my razor on the edge of the bathtub.
The only way to get my mind off everything was pain. My phone started buzzing and wouldn’t stop. I knew it was Alice calling me, but I ignored it.My phone was so smashed from being thrown across the room, it probably wouldn’t answer anyways. I looked at myself in the mirror.
“I’m sorry.” I whispered to my shaking reflection. I pressed the razor into my leg and pulled it across my skin. It hurt like hell, but that was a minor detail. I continued to cut until blood started gushing out of my last pass. Shit, I had cut my vein. I didn’t want to die, did I? I loved my family, but....I didn’t want to deal with life anymore. I didn’t want to feel pain anymore, nor did I want Jasper or anyone else to suffer with me. I didn’t want to live anymore. It was too hard. This was easier. I managed to make a few more cuts in my legs before black spots started appearing in my vision. Suddenly, I was too weak to hold the razor anymore. It fell to the floor as I fell back and hit my head on the wall. Just before I blacked out, I heard voices shouting. Someone would be here for me soon.
“I’m so, so sorry” I whispered. Not a second later, my world went black.

Tags: @meowpurrbooks @thesecretlifeofdaydreamss @lharrietg @car
A/N: This is the second part of my submission to @a-little-counter-esperanto's birthday sleepover challenge! I love Frank because of her - I hadn't watched Gifted until I started reading her Pieces series and I fell in love. So thank you sweet, Lauren for showing me the lovable character of Frank Adler. Happy Birthday and may all your dreams come true!! xx - Cherry
Tumblr media
Mary surprisingly had knocked out a few minutes after the movie. You carried her sleeping body down the hall and placed her gently onto her bed, turning on her nightlight on the desk. You studied her room: little trinkets from the beach, stuffed animals, and books. You smiled at her while she dozed and brushed a tendril of her hair away from her face and tucked her in.
She was such a sweet and precocious child. You didn’t know too much behind their story, just what you had heard through the rumor mill of her mother’s death and that Frank had adopted her at six months old. You were curious to know more about Frank; his life before rearing Mary. Was he different in any way? Would he want more kids? Fred the cat meowed and startled you as he found his spot on her bed and started to purr. You rubbed his head and he closed his eyes in acceptance of your touch.
You noticed a framed photo of Mary with Frank. His arms wrapped around her tightly and his hand squeezed her cute little cheeks. You smiled at what seemed like an adorable moment together. Then wondered who took the photo considering it was always the two of them.
You let out a little sigh as you continued to rub Fred's head. Thinking of Frank and wondering what he was doing at that exact moment made you slightly jealous of the woman he was entertaining for the evening.
Did he only think of you as the librarian who made his niece carry her weight in books home? Just a quick help of a babysitter while another lucky woman would be in his company?
You shook your head. Need not get too attached. This was a one time thing, the two of you were totally platonic and he was just being a nice guy taking his niece to check out books. Don't look too much into it, you told yourself.
You patted the cat one last time and turned to Mary for a final tuck in bed. A knock surprised you and you turned to see Frank. He smiled and had his other hand behind his back as he approached closer.
“You’re home earlier than expected,” you whispered, walking over to him. Careful to not wake Mary. His presence elated you and while you warned yourself to not wear your heart on your sleeve, it was very difficult with this charming man.
“Yeah. Realized my heart wasn’t into it,” he replied as he sat down on the bed. “She give you trouble?”
“Nah, we had a good time. Made sure she brushed her teeth half way into the movie since she was yawning. I hadn’t had a chance to clean up in the front though. Let me go do that now.”
“What? No…don’t worry about that. I…I have something for you,” he beamed.
“For me?”
He revealed his hidden hand and in it was a red velvet cupcake with a lit candle.
“Happy Birthday,” he said, holding out the treat in his hand.
“Omigosh,” you reply. “That’s so sweet of you, Frank.” Your hands covered your cheeks in hopes of hiding how you were blushing in the dim light. It was such a sweet and sentimental thing to do.
“Don’t mention it. Least I could do, having you watch a seven year old on your birthday. Now make a wish.”
Still in shock on this small, yet monumental moment from the person you barely knew: You closed your eyes, smiled slightly in thinking what would make you most happy at this exact moment, and then blew out the candle.
Tumblr media
“Hurry up, Frank! Y/N will notice if we’re not at the library at the same time every Saturday,” Mary gruffed as she pulled on her uncle’s arm.
“Hold your horses, kid,” he jested as he bargained with the old man in the bookstore. He had enjoyed spending two hours or so with you last night as you sat together on the couch while Mary slept. It had been awhile that he connected with someone and it flowed so freely. You learned he was a college professor back in Boston, and like you, had an affinity for learning.
However, as a motorboat repairman these days, his humbled job profession was more slow paced and that gave him extra time to focus on Mary. He seemed to have a strained relationship with his mother, Evelyn Adler who he mentioned was still up in Boston these days and really hadn’t even met Mary since her mother’s death. You shared more favorites: food, movies, and all the things typically discussed during a first date. Which ensued in falling for him even more. Playing pretend was hard on your heart. You could see yourself having a future with him, with Mary.
His knee bumped into yours slightly as you both shared the cupcake together on the couch. He just seemed so genuine - there had to be a reason why he was still a bachelor. Maybe all the rumors were true around town about how he would never settle down. He licked his lips on the final bite of the cupcake and you could melt right into the couch right there. The way his lip curled into a smile, as if he knew how much of a tease he was, only putting fuel to the flame.
Any other guy you knew would have made a move on you by now. But not Frank. He was a friend. He was a gentleman it seemed, although only hours before on a date with another woman. Which was why it all seemed a little too close for comfort. Even though you wished he had made a move, you said good night after realizing nothing good comes after midnight and that you’d see him tomorrow for the normal Saturday schedule, as friends.
Little did you know, his feelings for you were more intense than he had imagined, and while he didn’t want to scare you off, he knew he had to show his affection after he asked you to babysit. He had just gone on a date for Pete’s Sake. While he didn’t want to seem too eager or flighty, he wanted to make it up to you since spoiling your birthday. So much, that the good half of the night after you left, he spent scouring eBay and Offer Up for any hits of Little Women, First Edition. He thought this gesture would solidify his interest and genuinely wanted to find you the perfect birthday gift.

“I won’t go lower than $450,” the old man stated as Frank reviewed the book.
“This isn’t first edition,” Frank stated as he saw the spine binding, hands placed on his hips.
“No, you know how much those cost young man?”
“Jeez, Frank, you can’t even find the right edition?” Mary tutted.
He rubbed the back of his head in frustration, “Your ad said first edition.”
“Like First Edition. This is a replica.”
Frank smacked his head, “What are we gonna do now, Mary?"
Mary craned her neck back out of boredom as young children fairly do, “I dunno. But I’m hungry.”
Frank huffed in frustration. He really thought he had gotten the right present. Would you like this replica? He wouldn’t.
“Do you have anything else similar? That’s not a replica?”
Mary tugged further on Frank's arm, which only agitated him further.
"Not now, Mary! Can't you see the grown-ups are discussing something important?"
Mary pouted and Frank sighed in regret as he knew the way he responded to her was only going to dampen the mood more.
"I may have something…" the man replied.
Frank brought his attention back, "You do?"
"Yeah…"
Mary huffed again and saw through the window pane an ice cream shoppe across the street.
"Frank…"
Frank didn't listen, however. He was too preoccupied with his conversation, so Mary decided to take matters in her own hands.
“I do have an antique set of Alcott’s works."
"What? You do? Can I see it?" Frank asked excitedly.
"Yes. Let me pull it from the back,” the bookstore owner replied.
Frank clapped his hands, “Yes! Please. Let me take a look.”
The owner went behind a green velvet curtain and Frank turned to what he thought was his niece, but instead a stack of old books.

He frantically looked around the small store, shouting for Mary.
"Mary! Mary, you come out right this instant!"
Panic overwhelmed him as he realized he hadn't diffused the situation properly and now Mary was missing. He ran out of the store, the sun was high and he squinted as his eyes adjusted as best as they could.
He ran down the cobblestone street, shouting at every passer-by if they had seen his niece.
"Mary! Mary Elizabeth! This isn't funny young lady!"
Cars whizzed by and he felt his heart drop to his stomach, thinking of the worst case scenario by now.
"Jeez, she's only seven!" He said to himself. Pained in knowing he could have given her better attention. He had gone half a block down with no luck. He was about to call their neighbor, Roberta to be on standby in case she called her house, when he saw a little girl that looked remarkably like Mary. She was walking along the street, licking a pistachio ice cream cone.
His blood boiled immediately with the fright she put him through. He strided across the street and was about to yank the ice cream out of her hand, when he realized she had a chocolate cone with her as well.
"Frank," she said nonchalantly as he approached her.
"Mary…" he detested and rubbed his face with his large hand. "You can't just leave my sight, sweetheart."
"But I wanted an ice cream."
"It's ten am for Pete's sake."
"So?"
"So? You’re eating ice cream before noon! You left my side! How am I supposed to know where you went? And how did you pay for this anyway?"
"I have money. Roberta gave me milk money in case you forgot."
He sighed in relief, least she didn't beg money for it.
"I didn't go far."
"I know, but you just can't, Mary," he breathed in and closed his eyes. "I dunno what I'd do if I lost you, kiddo."
She held out the chocolate cone as a peace offering and he took it obligingly. He gave her a squeeze with his free arm and kissed her forehead.
"I wish Y/N was here. She said pistachio is her favorite, too."
"Well, instead of ice cream. How about we give her a bouquet of flowers?" he replied as he noticed the flower store next to the ice cream shoppe.
Mary's eyes widened, "Yes! I know her favorite."

Frank held Mary’s hand as she skipped along his side on the way to the steps of the library. The old man in the bookstore didn’t disappoint. He had brought out a blend of six authentic decorative antique books from Louisa May Alcott. Not First Edition, but an avid reader and fan like yourself would appreciate it, at least he sure had hoped so. Frank held them under his arm as they were wrapped carefully in parchment paper and tied with a lavender colored raffia. Mary gripped a beautiful bouquet of sunflowers in her hand that they had chosen from the florist.
He breathed out heavily as they approached the library and Mary observed his unusual behavior.
“Do you love Y/N?” She asked bluntly.
“What?” He replied and stopped in his tracks.
She pointed to the books and lifted the bouquet, “You’ve never gone through all this trouble for any of the other women. You don’t even know their birthdays. Is that what love is?”
Frank bent down and looked Mary in the eyes, “Did you finish reading Little Women? Is that why you’re talking about ‘love’?”
She sheepishly looked at him, “Yes. I don’t understand some of the story. I’m hoping Y/N can explain more of it. But it sure sounds like love.”
“You’re so smart. You knew even before I did that I care about Y/N. I know, I can’t run from my feelings anymore. But...love? I dunno. Maybe one day like how the characters love each other in the book. Love is different on all levels: I love you."
"Yeah, but that's different. With Y/N, that's like yucky love stuff for grownups."
He smiled at the thought of something transpiring between you, too. Hoping that you liked him, even if an ounce of how much he liked you.
"Heh, yeah."
"You gonna kiss her?"
He smacked his forehead at her bluntness, "We really gotta work on your filter, Mare."
He rubbed his thumb over the now wrapped books, but recalled what they looked like when the bookstore owner appeared with them. Their front covers were faded and worn, but their spines were exquisitely embellished with gilt accents and the dyed material was of a navy blue. He sure hoped it was something you’d enjoy, especially since he spent a pretty good penny. He’d be working all summer doing odd jobs for sure to cover what he charged on his credit card.
He gave her a playful shove, "Maybe. Why do you wanna know?"
"I dunno. I'm a lot like Jo in the book."
"Yeah? Why's that?"
"I don't think I'll ever fall in love."
"You got many years ahead of you to break hearts, kid. Ease it down a notch. There's still time, one day. You'll see. Maybe this book was a little too old for you," he laughed.
"You gonna tell Y/N you like her?"
"Yup, that's the plan. Hoping she'll go out on a real date with me. I think it's time, don't you think?"
“Good job, dummy. Took you long enough,” Mary teased.
Frank chuckled to himself, “Yup, you got me. Now come on, let’s go give Y/N her gifts.”
“I hope she likes them,” Mary said under her breath, but Frank was able to hear.
“Me, too, kiddo. Me, too.”
