YASUKE - Análise

Se existe um animador americano que vem se destacando nos últimos anos na indústria dos animes, esse cara é LeSean Thomas, um afro-americano completamente apaixonado pelo o Japão e por sua cultura, e Yasuke, novo anime original da Netflix, é mais uma prova disso, em seu segundo trabalho para a locadora vermelha (o primeiro foi Cannon Busters), o diretor explora a figura histórica e a lenda de Yasuke, o primeiro e único samurai africano na história do Japão, dando suas romantizadas ao inserir elementos de fantasia e ficção-cientifica na obra, o anime segue por um caminho um tanto parecido com a franquia de jogos e anime Sengoku Basara, não se importando com os fatos históricos para obter mais liberdade de escrita.

O anime se divide em duas tramas, a primeira no passado de Yasuke, de como ele chegou ao Japão, e virou um samurai a serviço de Oda Nobunaga, esse núcleo apesar de tomar certas liberdades, é bem coerente com o que sabemos sobre o verdadeiro Yasuke, mostrando sua lealdade ao senhor feudal e sua mente estrategista.

A segunda e principal trama da obra se passa 20 anos após o incidente no templo de Honnō-ji em 1582, onde Oda Nobunaga foi traído por seu general Akechi Mitsuhide, e forçado a cometer seppuku (um ritual de suicídio realizado por samurais), nesse núcleo LeSean Thomas pega o período desconhecido do samurai negro, que após esse incidente, ele nunca mais foi visto. No anime, Yasuke é assombrado pelo seu passado em Honnō-ji, e vive escondido em uma vila, onde vive como pescador, até que uma atraente cantora chamada Ichika lhe pede para levar sua filha doente, Saki, a um médico especial, no meio do caminho eles atacados por um quarteto de mercenários, e a donzela acaba morrendo, Yasuke então decide proteger Saki e levar a garota ao médico, mas ao longo de sua jornada ele percebe que está mexendo com forças que vão além de sua compreensão.

O anime é competente em criar a atmosfera do Japão feudal, mesmo inserindo robôs gigantes e lobisomens na história, em seis episódios a série conta um arco fechado e redondo, com alguns pequenos ganchos para serem trabalhados em possíveis futuras temporadas, a direção de LeSean Thomas não deixa a desejar, principalmente pela a animação, já que aqui estamos nas mãos do estúdio MAPPA, que vem se destacando como uns melhores estúdios da indústria com trabalhos como, Jujutsu Kaisen (2020-2021), The God of Highschool (2020), Yuri on ICE!!! (2016), e Shingeki no Kyojin Final Season (2020-2023).

Enquanto a dublagem, o indicado ao Oscar Lakeith Stanfield, entrega um ótimo trabalho de voz, construindo um personagem amargurado que encontra redenção, já a trilha sonora brilha com uma mistura de instrumentais tradicionais japoneses, com uma mistura de lo-fi e hip-hop, composta pelo parceiro de longa data de Thomas, Flying Lotus, onde não nega a inspiração em Vangelis em inúmeras faixas.

Yasuke, é um anime de ação que ressuscita a figura de um personagem importante da cultura afro-otaku.

"During my stay at STUDIO MIR in Seoul, South Korea, i was working as part of the core story team on Nickelodeon's hit series "The Legend of Korra." Above are a couple collections of ROUGH STORYBOARDS i did from my ACT 1 section from episode 2 " A LEAF IN THE WIND... As part of Story team 2, It was our first epsiode to work on( i handled from the beginning of act 1 all the way until Korra sneaks out from airtemple island, when she jumps in the water) and we hadn't gotten all the final model/costume materials just yet, but as you can tell some of the energy and shots still remained in the final (the bit where Tenzin tenderly fixes Korra's Air Temple Uniform was added by Joaquim and executed by RYU KIHYUN in the final animatic). There's also dialogue/scene that was deleted in the final animatic edit."

From what I can tell the deleted scene/dialogue was: Korra: "I have classmates?" Tenzin/Jinora/Meelo?: "Walking the circle teaches us how to evade an opponent"

Yasuke xoay quanh câu chuyện về samurai gốc Phi cùng tên có thật trong lịch sử Nhật Bản thời đại Sengoku. Trong anime, Yasuke đã từ bỏ lối sống của một samurai sau cái chết của chúa công Oda Nobunaga. Nhưng sự xuất hiện của một cô bé đặc biệt khiến anh phải tái xuất và bảo vệ cô cho đến khi tìm được người có thể giúp cô bé kiểm soát được quyền năng lớn lao trong mình. Từ đây, Yasuke phát hiện ra bộ mặt thật của lãnh chúa đang cát cứ kinh thành Kyoto. 

Yasuke vừa phải thực hiện nghĩa vụ của một người hộ vệ bất đắc dĩ, vừa phải đối diện với những bóng ma của quá khứ vẫn còn vương vấn từ 20 năm trước. Liệu người võ sĩ năm xưa có còn tồn tại? Hay y đã để những u uất trong quá khứ bóp nghẹt và rồi tự dìm mình trong men rượu hòa trong dòng nước của con sông vô danh? Qua hành trình này, người xem cũng từng chút một biết được quá khứ của Yasuke.

Yasuke ít nhiều lấy cảm hứng từ tư liệu lịch sử. Vì thế, theo đánh giá của cộng đồng fan, anime Yasuke phần nào chuẩn xác trong việc khắc hoạ một samurai gốc Phi có thật trong lịch sử Nhật Bản. Cannon Busters: Black representation beyond social issue dramas

Content Warning: Discussion of racial stereotyping/caricature

Oftentimes, the desire to resonate with a character based on what they look like is made to seem shallow, or even ungrateful within fan communities. You can repeat, “Representation matters,” until you’re blue in the face, but it doesn’t mean the creators are required to give it to you. After a while, you get so used to not seeing yourself accurately depicted in the media you watch, that you lap up even the smallest, usually stereotypical, BIPOC representations like water in the desert. After all, seeing a Black character that looks ripped straight from the illustrations of a minstrel show poster is better than no representation at all, right? As if having your physical features or cultural traditions used for comedic shtick and typecast caricatures has ever felt good to anyone. Not all representation is necessarily good representation.

Cannon Busters, on the other hand, seemed to promise the kind of representation I was looking for. The whispers of an anime with a mostly-Black cast of characters piqued my curiosity immediately. Anime with multiple Black leads, though not unheard of, were rare. I had to know if this was a fluke, or an elaborate marketing ploy to bait viewers like me, who eagerly soaked up every ounce of non-stereotyped diversity they could get their hands on. What I discovered was so much more than that. The fun of Cannon Busters isn’t just its inclusiveness, but in the way it doesn’t take itself too seriously.

I took interest in the series because I was Black, but the show doesn’t try to cash in on representation as a gimmick. It is merely a show that just so happens to have a mostly BIPOC cast, which can be rare to see in animation, let alone anime. At its heart, Cannon Busters is an epic adventure comedy that really didn’t see the traction it deserved after its debut.

So there’s a bit more information on the Yasuke anime. It will be an alternate reality, where magic and mecha are present. They reiterate that Yasuke would have to protect a girl from unknown dark forces, but still keeps the identity of the “dark forces” a secret. 

The anime is slated to only have six episodes. So it sounds more like a short-and-sweet sort of deal, like a movie, rather than a long-running TV series.

The character art looks amazing, though there’s not much to see by way of the environment yet. The armour on the ninja-like character looks a bit RPG-esque, so I’m anticipating the cities and such might look a bit fantastical and not just flat out historical.
