What Are Correspondences and How Do I Use Them in Spells?

In one of my previous posts, we talked about casting spells. In that post, I said that the only things you need to cast an effective spell are your will, your intention, focused energy, and a ritual action. But if that’s the case, why do witches include so much stuff in their spells? Why include herbs, oils, and crystals if you don’t need them for your spell to work?

Short answer: It’s an easy way to add power to your spell without draining your own energy.

Long answer: It’s related to the concept of magical correspondences.

In the book Wicca for Beginners, Thea Sabin says that, “Correspondences are things that ‘go with’ other things. They have similar qualities or similar energy… The idea is that things that are similar are bound together energetically, and including one in a spell might attract the other.”

In her book Green Witchcraft, author Paige Vanderbeck describes correspondences this way: “The same way a zodiac sign can give us a vague picture of who a person is, correspondences give us that for everything from plants and crystals to animals and actions.”

Vanderbeck goes on to list some different types of correspondences: botanical name (for example, mugwort’s botanical name is Artemisia vulgaris, which hints at its lunar associations), elements (earth, air, fire, water, and sometimes aether/spirit) astrological associations (example: sunflowers are associated with the sun and with the zodiac sign Leo), chakras (example: rose quartz is associated with the heart chakra), energies (which Vanderbeck describes as the item’s “talents or areas of expertise”), and magical uses (using roses in love spells, for example).

I would add that we can also gain info about an item’s correspondences by looking at its medicinal and culinary uses. For example, dong quai (better known in magic as angelica) is used medicinally to treat painful menstruation and symptoms of menopause — in American folk magic, it is used for protection and is thought to be especially good for protecting women. In cooking, cayenne is used to heat up a dish — in magic, it can be used to “light a fire under” someone to motivate them to action. These are two of many cases where a plant’s mundane uses mirror its uses in magic.

Choosing the right correspondences for your spell is like cooking. If you’re making a chocolate cake, you’ll probably add certain ingredients based on their culinary uses. You’ll add flour to give the cake structure, sugar to sweeten it, and chocolate for flavor. Likewise, when you cast a spell, you’ll add certain things based on their correspondences.

And just like you probably wouldn’t add garlic to your chocolate cake, you probably wouldn’t add an ingredient that corresponds to binding and banishing to your love spell. Once you’ve been practicing magic for a while, you’ll begin to develop an intuitive sense of which energies “go together” and which don’t.

Although most plant correspondences are based on natural properties, some correspondences are subjective. Color correspondences, for example, may vary quite a bit from one witch to the next. As always in witchcraft, it’s important to do what feels right to you — even if that means using an item for something unusual.

For example: earlier I mentioned using cayenne in a spell for motivation. However, some witches believe that cayenne should only be used for cursing and banishing — some witches won’t work with it at all because of its association with curses. Neither interpretation is wrong — every witch will have different associations for the herbs, crystals, and oils that they use in their craft.

I’m planning to put out several posts about specific correspondences in the next couple of weeks, but in the meantime if you want to do research on your own, I highly recommend the book A Green Witch’s Cupboard by Deborah J. Martin. This book lists the medicinal, culinary, and magical uses of 60+ common household herbs and spices. These are things you either already have in your kitchen or can get easily at a grocery store, so this is a great place to start for beginner witches.

(I tried to not do flowers that are too predictable because I know that’ll get boring)

Aries: Milk Thistle {Silybum marianum} Bright but prickly and highly protective, like really, a thistle literally saved Scotland once. Don’t fuck with a thistle, and don’t fuck with Aries. Thistle is also used for breaking hexes/curses/jinxes. Use it for lifting the mood as it’s a strong mood enhancer and can be used in magick involving mental health especially depression. You can probably use thistle to curse people too, it just depends on how you use it’s power. It’s useful for a ton of things and it’s obviously very powerful. :)

Taurus: Frangipani {Plumeria} A flower I personally associate with friendship. You could probably gift a necklace with a Frangipani symbol on it to a friend for long lasting friendship. It’s aesthetically pleasing, and smells of heaven! It softens others to you, attracts love, trust and admiration your way. Trust is very important to a Taurus. I feel it reminds me of Taurus because it’s colours are neutral and the flower is simple yet beautiful. It also promotes self-love.

Gemini: Baby’s Breath {Gypsophila} One of my fave flowers, associated with the heart, purity and immortal love. Light and elegant. Small flowers with a a big impact, especially when bunched together, plus they look like their gossiping, no tea ☕️ . Makes every bouquet look prettier imo. I made this Gemini’s flower because these plants bring together people AND bouquets. They seem.. social? Gemini’s are good at bringing people together to have fun while keeping situations light. I also associate both baby’s breath and Gemini’s with youth. Gemini’s are very energetic and sometimes it takes a while for them to grow up, but that’s just because they let their inner child roam free, letting themselves have fun.

Cancer: Hyacinth {Hyacinthus} Named after Hyakinthos, a Greek prince from ancient strokes who was in love with Apollo! He was gay and I never knew of this story, now I’m interested. Hyacinths are associated with emotion and sometimes sadness, forgiveness, consistency and sincerity. Also homosexuality and ummm I’m going to say freedom. I think I put this flower with cancer because cancers believe in all types of love and will protect and fight for it. This flower also as similar properties to the moon because it represents the emotional side of things.

Leo: Winged Everlasting {Ammobium alatum} So I just found out about this flower and I’m shook. It’s so cute. Associated with summer, it’s attractive, protective, and resembles the sun. The reason why it’s a good protective flower is because when it grows, the flowers bunch together. No one is more fiercely protective than a Leo. It also has a really pretty name and can be known as sandflower. Winged everlastings are like sunflowers and daisies mixed together, if that makes sense. The white petals are actually apart of the stem and the yellow in the middle is the actual flower. Like this flower, Leo’s are interesting and deserve to be noticed, pay attention because they have a ton to offer. x

Virgo: Magnolia Flowers {just...magnolia?} Has anti-anxiety and healing properties, good for virgos! 😂 Magnolia is said to increase feelings of love and loyalty, is peaceful and promotes a sense of freedom. It helps open you up but in a comfortable way and it is associated with femininity. You can use it to have a happy, long lasting marriage because Magnolia enhances faithfulness in marriage and is also used to purify homes. This flower reminds me of what virgo stands for; purity, hearth, health, and loyalty. Or at least that’s what Virgo represents to me.

Libra: Jasmine {Jasminum} The flower of purity, sensuality, attraction and grace! Jasmine essential oils are one of the most expensive, and Venus ruled Libra live for luxurious items. Jasmine is associated with psychic abilities and can clear the mind, letting you see things for what they are, and Libras respect honesty. This flower will enhance your femininity whether you’re female or male, it’s all about equality when you’re a libra, right? The scent of jasmine is the most heavenly scent I’ve ever smelt in the entire world, so you guys are lucky I let you have this one! 😂

Scorpio: Opium Poppy/Oriental Poppy {Papaver somniferum Papaver orientale} I’ve put both because in Australia we wear Oriental poppies on ANZAC Day, when I was younger someone told me we wore them because all the dead soldiers blood on the field grew deeper into the soil and blood red poppies. Associated with death and sleep but sometimes also pleasure, given as offerings to the dead. Even though this flower is associated with death, I think it’s beautiful because it’s all about respecting the dead and remembering. It’s not about the sadness, it’s about saying thank you. ❤️

Sagittarius: Lilac {Syringa vulgaris} Protection, romance, and happiness. Lilacs are most commonly used for driving away bad spirits from haunted homes and mask the scent of death, but I associated Sagi’s with Lilacs because they lighten up lives and remind people how good life can be by having fun. I read that if you want to attract a short, flirty romance that isn’t too deep and is just for the summer 👀 use lilacs in spell work. Sagi’s love being flirty and having fun but they don’t always want to be bound to one person.

Capricorn: Periwinkle {Vinca major} Used for strong protection against evil and can eliminate negative energy. Can enhance your inner power, and it’s said to be quite powerful. In welsh folklore it’s said that if you pick periwinkle from a grave you’re surely to be haunted, but respect the periwinkle and it’ll protect you from negative entities and witches who might want to curse you. It’s said to exorcise demons too. Periwinkle is powerful and a hard worker and great for any type of magick so you can see why I thought of capricorn.

Aquarius: Yarrow {Achillea millefolium} A highly spiritual flower used to enhance psychic abilities, can be good for astral travel, lucid dreaming, connections to the spirit world and divination. Used for protection, healing and banishing negative entities. In China, yarrow is used to promote intelligence and Aquarians are one of the smartest signs of the zodiac. In Greece its associated with the Trojan War hero Achilles, it’s said that yarrow was used to treat his wounds. Yarrow was important to many ancient cultures and it’s still important today. Yarrow has been used for so many things over the years and it also looks really cute, you can just use it for decor and it’ll protect your whole home.

Pisces: Dandelion {Taraxacum} In my experience, dandelion will highly elevate your psychic abilities and might give you weird ass dreams if you drink Dandelion root tea before bed. The most popular use of dandelions is to make wishes with them, I use to think that the little things that flew off were fairies (and that was before tinker bell came out). So I associated Dandelions with imagination, something pisces has a ton of. You can also use dandelion to connect with spirits or for dreamwork, like lucid dreaming and astral projection.

Pagan Pages: A Witch’s Cupboard

Building a proper witch's cupboard can be a lengthy process for beginners. How do you know which herbs you need? And in what quantity? You see spellwork on social media platforms and think that you could never be able to do a spell like that because you lack the proper materials. For baby witches there is SO MUCH information out there, it is difficult to know where to begin. So this post will be a breakdown of 5 of the ingredients that I use the most often for spellwork and cooking.

Mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) - A couple of the common names for mugwort include Felon herb, St. John's Plant, sailor's tobacco, Artemis Herb, Naughty Man, and Old Uncle Henry. Its leaves are green on the top, white on bottom, with pointed tips and purplish stems. Practical uses of the herb include burning it as an incense, smoking it, or drinking it as a tea to help with divination work and to aid with protection during spellwork. It is feminine in nature, and sacred to the Goddesses Artemis, Diane, and Hecate (Hekate). It can also be used in dream satchels to enhance prophetic or lucid dreaming. As a topical, the antifungal and antifungal properties can assist in relieving common skin ailments and remove warts with continued topical application. Over time, mugwort has been used to terminate unwanted pregnancies in Europe, treat painful menstrual cycles and prevent miscarriages in China, and put in the shoes of Roman soldiers to protect their feet from getting tired. Do not ingest in large quantities or for an extended period of time.

Chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile or Matricaria recutita) - Roman chamomile or German chamomile work very much the same, it just depends on where you live as to which will be easier to find. In spellwork, chamomile is associated with the element water and the sun Gods Ra, Lugh, and Cernunnos. It is used in spells focusing on love, money, peace, tranquility, and letting go of the pain. It can be infused into a tea to assist with the throat chakra, stomach ailments, muscle spasms, and insomnia. Additionally, it can be added to a bath to help cleanse before a ritual.

Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) - Bay laurel, or bay leaf, is one of the first herbs I ever added to my collection. You can find it at your local grocery store as “bay leaves”, or at your garden center as “laurel”. It has shiny, dark green, oval-shaped leaves with a lighter bottom. It will blossom yellow flowers in the spring, followed by dark berries on the female plants. It can grow up to 10 feet tall outside of its native area. The bay laurel is sacred to Apollo, and a wreath of laurel was used to crown important figures in both ancient Greek and Roman history. Garlands of laurel were given to the winners of Pythian and Olympic games in ancient Greece. In spellwork, bay leaves are masculine, ruled by the sun (Leo) and the element fire, along with being sacred to the Gods Apollo, Aesclepius, Ceres, Zeus, Fides, Hermes, and Cerridwen. They can be added to almost any spell to enhance psychic abilities, burned in a smudge to banish an area of unwanted energies, or written and burned to make a wish come true. It can also be carried in a wallet to attract money. Made into an oil, laurel can alleviate arthritis pain, bruises, and other common skin ailments. As a tea, it calms nerves, aids in digestion, and cleanses your body of impurities.

Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum) - A member of the mint family, sweet basil has a square, fuzzy stem and white, pale pink, or purple flowers and a spicy aroma. It is masculine in nature, sacred to Vishnu, Tulasi, and Erzulie, and associated with the planet Mars along with the element fire. In African history, it was taught that basil would keep scorpions at bay. European folklore states it is an herb of “Satan”, and one must curse the ground before planting it to ensure its success. It was also believed that witches used to drink basil tea before they would fly on their brooms. In spellwork, it is used to attract love, money, happiness and to keep your mind clear. It’s also been stated that carrying a leaf of basil in your wallet will protect you on trips outside of your home. Basil oil is high in antifungal and antibiotic properties and can be used to treat common skin irritations. It can also be drunk as a tea to help calm nerves, headaches, upset stomachs, and to prevent flatulence.

Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) - As one of the best-known ingredients in a witch’s cupboard, lavender can be used as an oil, ground up, or as the whole flower. As a member of the mint family, it holds a sweet scent on its tall stalks of purple, white, or blue flowers. Over time, we have come to discover that the Roman soldiers used lavender in their bathwaters, to wash their clothes, and burned as incense. To this day, there remain cultures that continue the tradition of burning lavender to ward off “evil” spirits on St. John’s Day or during a solstice. Lavender is masculine in nature and associated with the element air, planet Mercury, and Virgo sign. The dried flowers can be used in dream satchels to aid in sound sleep. The oil has a very calming effect and can be added to bathwater to relax and help cleanse away unwanted energies. The dried flowers can be braided together and burned to aid in sleep or to clear the mind.

One thing to remember, it can take time to build the witch’s cupboard you want. Specific ingredients can be difficult to find if you cannot grow them or they are out of season. That’s okay. Begin with the plants and herbs that you can find easily and will serve multiple purposes. Eventually, you will have everything you need at your fingertips, but that will not happen overnight. These are only 5 of the infinite amount of ingredients you can keep. All I have shared comes from my personal studies and experiences. Do not ingest anything without speaking to a medical professional. Any oils should be diluted before applying to the skin and may cause adverse reactions to some. Do your own extensive research before you try something new to ensure the best outcome.

Hạ khô thảo có tác dụng giúp lợi sữa Dùng 60 gram gạo tẻ, 30 gram bồ công anh, 20 gram dược liệu. Đem bồ công anh và dược liệu đun sôi cùng với nước lọc lấy nước bỏ bã và cho thêm gạo tẻ vào để nấu thành cháo.

Công dụng của hạ khô thảo chữa tắc tia sữa

Đến khi cháo chín thì cho đường trắng vào nêm nếm vừa miệng và ăn. Sử dụng liên tục 3 đến 5 ngày và lặp lại nếu sữa chưa thông.

Hạ khô thảo có tác dụng trị tiểu tiện khó khăn Dùng 8 gram dược liệu cùng với 2 gram hương phụ và 1 gram cam thảo. Đem tất cả nguyên liệu sắc với 300ml nước đến khi cạn còn 200ml nước, chia ra uống 3 lần trong ngày.

Tác dụng của hạ khô thảo giúp dưỡng da, giảm thâm và nếp nhăn Sử dụng 30 gram lá dâu, 10 ml nước ép dưa leo, 10 gram dược liệu. Đem dược liệu và lá dâu sắc với 3 chén nước đến khi cạn còn 1 chén thì tắt bếp, lọc lấy nước và hòa với nước ép dưa leo thoa lên mặt, rửa sạch sau 15 phút đắp.

Hoặc dùng 12 gram dược liệu và 4 gram cam thảo, đem sắc nước thuốc để uống. Hay dùng viễn chí, hương phụ, dược liệu cùng với bối mẫu. Sắc đặc để dùng.

Hạ khô thảo trị bệnh viêm tuyến vú và viêm hạch Dược liệu 20 gram, huyền sâm 12 gram, thổ bối mẫu 12 gram. Đem tất cả các nguyên liệu sắc thành nước thuốc và uống hết trong ngày. Sử dụng kiên trì và lâu dài sẽ giúp tình trạng bệnh thuyên giảm rõ rệt.
