Two and a half years have passed since I wrote "The Secret Society of the Forest Children", a Levihan fanfiction that I posted on AO3. And now, with the anime ending, I've been driven to come back here and wistfully wander through my own words, my vision, and who I was back then. I have reread my comments on the fanfics I was reading at the time (a warm greeting to @tundrainafrica, @djmarinizelablog, @fanmoose12 and many more writers whose stories inspired me SO deeply), and I have remembered how much this story has marked me. Honestly, I don't know what this is about. With the last chapter airing I felt the need to give myself some peace of mind again with the ending that was given to us so I wrote another fanfic. However, I feel that this does not completely ease my heart. I reread my first fanfic too, Hange, and I could tell how my resentment towards Eren was fresh and alive at that moment. The last story I wrote I also did as a way to make peace with him and with SNK for taking away my favorite character haha. I feel shy commenting on this, but it's like I'm mourning my favorite character again. My dear Hange Zoë. And between the nostalgia and the new Voice Dramas released, I think I remembered why I embraced them so much, and I still do. To me, Hange is a symbol of something beautiful: the ability and strength to dare to live life with emotion, to observe with curious eyes, and to treat others with kindness and compassion. To be authentic, laugh with innocence and enthusiasm even in a world that can be cruel. For me Hange is synonymous with that kind of freedom. And this space has been a beautiful place of connection between those of us who, I believe, saw something more in this character too (along with Levi, of course, my beloved Levi). In honor of that connection and its meaning, maybe, I wrote this.
And I hope that in a parallel world, our dear Levihan is doing laundry and taxes together.
A hug.

FANMOOSE i just finished reading the devil you know oh my god i loved how you tied everything up, historia, the paths thing, zeke, hanj as a marleyan, them being used as a bargaining chip, even fking floch AHHHHHHH i could kiss you in the lips right nowW you're absolutely right why couldn't they just ,, u know,, ask ymir to stop??? GENIUS genius, I love it! I love how capable and not so helpless Historia and Mikasa are, Historia especially during the paths scene GAH the levihan is top tier you are brilliant and I love you this is so CANON to me you helped me get over the anime cough cough are you yams why is your brain so big such a great fix-it fic i binged it all morning and I LOVE YOU THANK YOU FOR YOUR MASTERPIECE your zevihan kinda inspired me coughs
ohh, the devil you know that's my baby!! i don't really remember who pitched the idea to me (sorry), but i love, love the setting! it gives so much freedom to explore hange's character! it adds more depth to it! i know i haven't actually explored it much in the fic, but i really love the idea of hange growing up in marley? weird, bizarre hange being raised in marley's conservative society? constantly looked upon because of her unusual interests? having to live under the weight of her father's legacy? again, i didn't really explore this theme in a fic because there was no space for it really, but i like the idea of hange as a strange child of a very important, very serious man who tries to shun all her achievements and set her on a right path, but hange persisisting through it all. of course, there is also a matter of marley's policies, of how they treated eldians and how hange disapproved of it all but also couldn't really do much because of her status.
and zeke, oh zeke, they'd make such a great pair. both insanely smart, both desperate to change the world and both quite unable to do that. i bet they had the time of their lives theorizing what would happen if only they were free to do as they pleased.
and then! then! hange arrives at paradise (this too makes more sense in my head. no shade on annie, bert and reiner, but sending kids on a dangerous mission to another part of world without any kind of supervision? not marley's brightest ideas), joins the survey corps and? for the first time in her life she feels like she belongs there? all of them are weird! all of them are rebels in a way! hange feels so free and happy! and then she falls in a love with a strangest, kindest man she's ever met! everything is perfect! until hange remembers who she really is and who all these people are, and.... the tragedy ensues
ok, sorry for ramblings but i really love this fic and this setting so, so much! and i love you @anyareinein you're the best!! can't wait for your next update!

Hi Bianca! Here's a levihan prompt for you: They meet again in another timeline and when they finally recognize each other, Hange goes, "Let's live together in this lifetime, shall we?"
Hi Izela, thank you for the prompt! I'm sorry for taking so long to write this, I hope you like it!
BTW, I wrote this in two hours in the middle of the night while I listening to "Turning Page" by Sleeping At Last and "Cornelia Street" by Taylor Swift... and you can totally tell lol.
It all began with the simplest of things, situations that could pass as part of Hange’s imagination; someone calling their name, the ghost of a touch on their shoulder, a pull on their hair – strong enough to demand attention, gentle enough not to hurt.
Sometimes, while Hange sat hunched over a table and looked through their microscope, they could hear someone calling their name. “Hurry up, four-eyes. Everyone’s tired of waiting for you.” They looked over their shoulder, expecting to see their assistant calling them for the lunch break, but found nothing but a closed door and an empty lab.
It was nothing like Moblit’s voice either, much deeper and colder than his.
Other times, alone in their house after a long shift, Hange prepared two cups of tea instead of just one. One cup with three spoons of sugar and another one with barely any of it. They stayed there, just staring at the white teacups on the kitchen table… The steaming hot tea slowly turned cold, waiting for someone who would never come.
Hange blamed it on the lack of sleep at first, but then, even their nights became a hunting ground. Dreams of another time slipped inside their mind in incoherent flashes. A mist of tender late nights shared with a close friend, and the violent battles that followed without a warning.
They attributed those bittersweet scenes to residue information that their brain tried to process, maybe an action movie they saw, or a romance novel that filled them with hopeless romantic scenarios…
But nothing was ever just as simple. Those sparks of information, those private moments, were just as confusing as they were recurrent. Insistent. Memories that someone else cherished so much to the point of carrying on to the next world.
A dark forest and the feeling of damp clothes against their body, a quiet confession that didn’t require an answer. Dedicate your heart. Their own body is flames, painting the blue sky in the warmest shade of orange.
As most dreams did, those also faded with the daylight, only bits and pieces remained, locked inside their mind, bringing along their grief and hopelessness. Levi Ackerman. The name rolled out of their tongue so easily as a laugh would.
Hange liked coherent things, they used logic to understand the world around them. If they didn’t have an answer to something that piqued their interest, they’d find one, even if that meant spending late nights obsessing over the computer.
“Who doesn’t have an instagram account these days?” They closed another tab after opening tons of profiles, none similar to their Levi Ackerman.
After the light research about dreams and memories proved ineffective – with the google results leading them to “find out about your past-life” meditation youtube videos – Hange decided to go full-on stalker mode. But finding one particular Levi amongst seven billion people in the entire world was a harder feat to accomplish.
And again, even if they did find him… What then? He may live on the other side of the world. He may speak a different language. He may enjoy life in total reclusion from the problems of modern-day society.
Somehow, that last idea didn’t seem so far-fetched. “Maybe we should just live here, right, Levi?”
The more Hange looked, the more frustrated they got. Curses came out of their mouth as fast as they typed into the search bar of yet another social media website. The same curses always accompanied by his name, already so familiar in their vocabulary.
Their anger brought no results. Hange went to bed when the day broke through the horizon, with deep bags under their eyes, more frustration than one body could endure, and prepared for another set of nightmares.
By the next afternoon, when Hange was close to giving up, a glimpse of hope appeared on their twitter timeline as a suggestion. “Maybe you should follow these accounts...”
The profile had no more information except for his age and a small picture where his face was barely visible – it didn’t matter, Hange could recognize that shade of dark hair easily. The adrenaline rush made them click the request follow button way too fast, and the aftermath of that decision caused them to sit on their couch with their hands clasped together, biting their nails and moving their legs up and down like the anxious mess they were, hoping a new notification would soon pop up.
The notification didn’t come that day, nor the rest of the week. Every day, Hange logged in to their account, just to check, only to be disappointed. Then, when disappointment dimmed, they tried to argue that maybe Levi only accepted people he already knew, or maybe he hadn’t updated his account in years.
“God, I’m acting like a teenager.” They blocked their phone and threw it on the furthest end of the couch.
Searching for Levi led them to a dead-end. Childish illusions. What if Levi accepted their follow request? What would they do then? “I know you have no idea who I am, but I think you’re my soulmate from another life and we should live together until the end of times?”
Right… He’d waste no time blocking me.
Hange decided to give up on chasing useless dreams – or that’s what they tried to believe. The long-lost memories continued to make appearances during the nights, the phantom touches from another life still reverberated on their body, and the absence of someone else grew bolder with each passing day.
During those days, weeks, and then months, longing and loneliness walked hand in hand. The more they dreamed about the unknown, the more they missed it.
Saudade.
***
Winter arrived early that year. Hange decorated the apartment for Christmas in various red, golden, and green ornaments, all as an excuse to celebrate a stranger’s birthday. They placed a few presents under the tree, something he might like, and then stepped outside to the balcony with a warm blanket and two cups of tea – one with three spoons of sugar and another one with barely any of it.
The first snowfall of the year came and covered the streets, cars, and rooftops in white. Some snowflakes sparkled in the light shining from the lamp posts, and Hange took some time to imagine that they were dancing outside, twirling in the cold while someone held their hand.
“It seems as if I’ve waited a million years, already.” They whispered, imagining, hoping, that maybe Levi heard them. “but I can wait a million more for you.”
The lights flickered, a perfect opportunity for their ghosts to come to life. Two small figures emerged from the shadows, swaying from side to side in the middle of the sidewalk, kicking snow everywhere, and almost kissing under the moonlight.
A million years were no match for Hange’s devotion.
***
Summer brought a bit of serenity back to Hange’s life. More work, a regular sleeping schedule, and fewer and fewer dreams. Somehow, they missed those wild nights of dreams and nightmares blurring together. There was no regret in receiving those memories back, Hange concluded that possessing that knowledge was better than staying in the dark about their best friend’s existence.
Maybe Levi was out there, waiting for Hange too. They could only hope that the future would be kinder… That their next life would have more compassion…
“I’m sorry! Do you know where Dr. Hange’s lab is? I just started working here and–” A raspy voice called out for them, shouting their name in a manner too intimate for a first meeting. The person stopped talking once Hange turned around.
There was no such thing as love at first sight, but Hange couldn’t find any other logical explanation to the feeling spilling from their chest – no other explanations besides a deep feeling in their gut screaming that they’ve met before, centuries ago, in another world ravaged by hate.
The sunlight glistened through Hange’s glasses, poorly hiding the tears. The wind brushed Levi’s hair away, revealing his shocked eyes. He looked so young, so free. This life treated him well, apparently. No one deserved it more than him.
Hange called his name at the same time he called theirs, it echoed like a prayer in their lips. The memories, which at that point were merely broken glass shards reflecting a messy story, came together. Hange remembered everything, and they were sure that Levi did too.
In seconds, Levi crossed the sidewalk outside of the college campus and pulled Hange against his body. Their face pressed against his neck, his hands intertwined in their hair, his touch raised a million buried feelings.
“I hope I never lose you… Not this time.” He murmured, voice laced with fear, still hugging them tightly.
“You won’t.” Hange unwillingly stepped back, only to stare into his eyes and smile. They could barely distinguish their own emotions, but something similar to relief resurfaced. With a deep breath, they closed their eyes and pressed their forehead against Levi’s “Let’s live together in this lifetime, shall we?”

hi jello!! what about post timeskip levihan? commander hanji is working very hard and rarely, rarely sleeps (let alone eats and bathes properly. its worse than before now though.).
what if one time levi discovers hanji passed tf out due to sheer exhaustion in the most weird and random of places. he doesn’t want to wake them up bc hanji def needs the rest so he carries/tucks her into bed.🥺❤️
JAZZY thank you for the prompt! I kind of combined it with this one too:

Thank you, Anon!

Hange gave a small laugh before saying, “Thank you Levi, I feel much better now.”
“Tch, you haven’t even done what we came here to do,” Levi scoffed.
Hange made a confused sound.
“Drop the dish.”
It had been 3 years since Shiganshina. Levi climbed into the carriage and sat across from Hange, who was still reading through her notes from the long and grueling meeting that lasted for the better part of the day. All the highest ranking military officials had been called to the capital to discuss Paradis’s best course of action. Queen historia was there, along with her staff, advisors, and of course Zackley. Levi had been to plenty of these meetings before, but this time was different in a bit of a distressing way.
Over the years, Levi had watched Erwin defend the scouts countless times. From questionable means of gathering information, to explaining away hundreds of lives lost, he always had an answer for everything and he always managed to leave with a favourable image. It was something Levi truly admired and even envied about Erwin.
But now he had been watching Hange flounder. She has indeed improved over the last 3 years, but she still doubts herself and while it might not be known to those around her, Levi can’t help but feel sympathetic to her situation. Today however, the other officials had been particularly ruthless.
“Take a break, Hange,” Levi ordered. Hange just sighed. Then her stomach growled. “Have you eaten today?”
“Uuuuuuuhhh,” Hange mused as she genuinely struggled to remember.
“Tch, there’s your answer,” Levi crossed his arms. The rest of the officials had a big dinner scheduled for tonight, but of course the Survey Corps got shafted and had to leave early in order to prepare. Hange met his eyes again with an exhausted look he was all too familiar with.
“How have you been sleeping?”
“Not great,” she admitted. Levi’s stomach sank. He had dealt with his own insomnia his whole life, but it seems worse on Hange. Perhaps it was the stark contrast from her former bubbly and loud personality. Hange pinched the bridge of her nose and let out another long sigh. Levi couldn’t help feeling inadequate and helpless. He rarely got himself to sleep, how could he help Hange?
Levi looked out the window at the setting sun when he got an idea. He realized what Hange had been neglecting while trying to be a good commander. Something that wasn’t just eating and sleeping. Something that was unique to Hange.
“Hange, there’s one more thing you need to do before we leave.”
Hange raised an eyebrow.
Levi told the driver to wait for them and escorted Hange to the dining hall.
“Levi, we were technically invited, but I don’t think showing up for food after we already said goodbye is a very good look for us,” Hange practically whispered.
Levi opened the doors and they were greeted with a sweet aroma of bread, appetizers, and whatever was going to be the main dish. Hange’s mouth watered. The long elegant table was decorated with ornate candles, beautiful china, crystal glasses, and there were 4 sets of cutlery for each place setting.
“Relax, they won’t be here just yet. They will all be busy getting dressed for dinner.”
Hange grabbed a bread roll and took a huge bite, not bothering to chew before she commented, “I never understood ‘dressing for dinner’ ugh. What’s the point?”
Levi was about to make a half hearted comment about how Hange could never fit in with “civilized” society, but he stopped himself when he saw she was eating and was a little bit more relaxed. He found a small plate of savoury looking appetizers and handed it to her. She immediately took one.
“MMM, Levi!” she exclaimed, pointing at the plate. She popped another in her mouth before saying, “you gotta try these!”
Levi put up a hand and said, “you enjoy.”
Hange enthusiastically cleared the whole platter in less than a minute, and Levi was watching her, endeared at the behaviour. He had missed this side of her. Despite how gross it was, there was a glimpse of the carefree Hange he once knew. A small hint of a smile tugged at the corner of his mouth.
Then Hange belched.
“Disgusting,” Levi waved the air in front of his nose.
Hange gave a small laugh before saying, “Thank you Levi, I feel much better now.”
“Tch, you haven’t even done what we came here to do,” Levi scoffed.
Hange made a confused sound.
“Drop the dish.”
Hange’s one eye widened as she processed what Levi was saying.
“C’mon, you need to blow off some steam. They were total assholes to you today, and for what? You didn’t know the exact amount of your food budget? And yet,” Levi gestured to the banquet. He then picked up a delicate looking wine glass. He held his arm outstretched, and loosened his grip, letting it crash to the ground. “Oops.”
A mischievous smile stretched across Hange’s lips. “Oops,” she mimicked Levi and let the empty platter fall to the floor, breaking into dozens of pieces. She slowly started to lap around the long luxurious set up, like a predator admiring her prey before pouncing.
“Right? And Nile, ugh, what a hypocrite! Giving me shit for not knowing about that small thing, belittling me in front of everyone,” Hange snapped a salad plate against the edge of the table. “It wasn’t too long ago when he would have been the first to admit he had no idea what the first interior squad were up to! We had to find out for ourselves. Erwin was almost hanged!” Hange kicked a chair over on its side.
“Yeah, fuck Nile,” Levi egged her on. He took a seat at the head of the table and started sipping from one of the water glasses.
“Is this his spot?”
Levi shrugged but Hange was already pouring out a glass of wine all over the white seat, staining it a deep crimson. Levi hid his delight behind another sip.
“And did you catch what he said at the end? ‘Some of us have wives to get home to’”, she imitated in a mocking tone as she casually pushed a platter of dumplings off the table. “Yeah, run home, Nile. Run home to Erwin’s SLOPPY SECONDS!”
Levi blew water out of his nose, and before he could react, Hange reached under the short side of the table and flipped it over, sending its contents hurtling across the room. Hange was elated at the result, laughing almost maniacally.
“Idiot,” Levi hissed, grabbing Hange’s wrist and leading her out the side door. He heard footsteps, and so he instinctively dove into nearby shrubbery, taking Hange down with him.
They hid in the bushes for minutes, Levi pressing his hand to suppress Hange’s uncontrollable laughter. It had been so long since she’d laughed like this. It was infectious and Levi might have actually laughed himself, were it not for the fear of getting caught. He had no problem telling the MPs where to shove it, but he didn’t want Hange to get in trouble. Her whole body was convulsing, and it was rattling the leaves around her. Levi used all his body weight to stop her jerky movements.
After about another minute of total silence, Hange tapped Levi’s arm, signalling to let go. He was hesitant, but he obliged. Hange drew a couple deep breaths, fanning herself, trying to calm down from laughing so hard. Levi was transfixed by the way the moonlight danced on her tear-stained face. They stared at each other for a moment before Hange snickered once more, causing Levi to cover her mouth yet again. “You’re impossible,” he said, pushing her head back down.
Once the coast was clear, they ran back to their carriage, hand in hand. Partly because Levi wanted Hange to keep up, and partly because it felt nice to hold her hand. They ducked their heads until they were off of the main roads. A few minutes later, Hange started giggling again.
“What?” Levi asked.
Hange bit her lip playfully as she reached into her coat and pulled out a bottle of expensive wine she must have swiped from the banquet.
Levi rolled his eyes, but couldn’t help his smile. She looked like a child that just got away with stealing more dessert. She looked joyful for the first time in a long time. She yanked out the cork and took a swig before offering the bottle to Levi. He graciously accepted and tasted the wine for himself. It was too sweet for his taste, but he couldn’t deny that it was spectacular.
“That’s nice,” he commented.
“Pfft! It tastes the same as the cheap stuff!” Hange scoffed as she took the bottle back. Any other time, Levi would have teased her and started an argument, but not today. He wanted to cherish this moment. He leaned over to look at the stars through his window. Not a bad ending to an otherwise terrible day.
After Shiganshina, he and Hange had lost so much. Their comrades, friends; life as they knew it had completely changed and they barely had a moment’s breather to come to grips with it all. Levi was unfortunately accustomed to it, but Hange wasn’t. Hange had been so strong through all of this and Levi wanted to find the right words to tell her. Maybe it was the exhaustion they both felt; maybe it was the close proximity, but for some reason, somehow, Levi felt a tiny bit of courage surge through his veins.
“Hey, Hange, I-”
When he turned to look at her, she was fast asleep, neck crooked as she cradled the bottle of wine. Levi smiled at her. She looked peaceful, like she was getting quality sleep. He took the bottle from her arms and gently maneuvered her to a more comfortable, lying down position. He removed his jacket and draped it over her, as a make-shift blanket.
“Goodnight, Four-Eyes,” he mumbled to himself and returned to his seat. Hange slept the whole way home. When they finally arrived in the southern barracks, Levi couldn’t bring himself to wake her up. He quickly ran their luggage up to their rooms, and came back for Hange.
Being as gentle as he could, he scooped up the commander and ignored the curious look he got from the carriage driver. She was taller than him, and her long limbs made the trek a little difficult, but he was determined. Her steady breaths tickled the skin of his neck.
He carried her up the winding staircase and into her quarters. He lowered her on the bed, careful not to go too fast. He cradled her head for a split second longer than he needed too. He took off her long boots one at a time, placing them silently on the floor at the end of the bed. He undid the top two buttons of her jacket and shirt, just for comfort. Then he pulled the blanket up to her chin, and tucked around the sides.
Finally, he removed her glasses and eyepatch, caressing the tender skin underneath. Placing them on her night stand, he got up to leave. The door hinge creaked as he opened it, and Hange stirred.
“Mmm Levi?” She called out.
Levi wasn’t sure if she was actually awake, or if she was sleep-talking. He was still deciding whether he should answer when she continued, “Thank you, Levi. For everything.”
“You too, Hange,” he spoke just above a whisper, as he closed her door.

“You’re shit at kissing...” Levi coughs. Everything hurts, and him hacking up his lungs is testing the integrity of Hanji’s stitches. The loud humming of the forest fades to a whisper when she breathes life back into his ribs.
The shock and desperation fades from her face and she’s laughing now, “but Levi...” she drawls, “we’ve had so much practice...”
Not enough... He breathes. In a world full of people he chose her, and he has built a home in her. Now he just needs a little more time. And Hanji understands. But this world has been kind. Thirty four revolutions around the sun and she’s here in the forest with him. Everything has gone according to plan. At least in all the ways that matter. There’s still time. The world is suspended in a sunbeam, dancing like dust glinting when it catches the light.
There’s still time... We can pretend we’re the only two people left in the world...
To build a home in another person, all you need is a little wonder. But in this time and space, Levi is young and whatever skills he exhibits in the battlefield, he makes up for with lack of imagination.
Because imagine that- Levi having anything to do with Hanji Zoë.
“You’ll love me Levi, just you wait!” Hanji had teased, three days after first introducing herself to him with a smile and enough sunshine to last Levi a lifetime, “we’ll be best friends in no time”. To which Levi responded with a glower and a seething “not even if we’re the last two fucking people on earth.” And Levi hates himself for saying that. How fucking childish. But the need to be eloquent with Hanji is always lost under the temptation to bicker like children. They all tease him about it. Tell him that Hanji is just- well- an inevitability. And she’s never wrong. But Levi doesn’t think much of it. Her prophecy is mostly forgotten beneath the humdrum of routine death and destruction.
Until now.
Except it really isn’t a prophecy, because prophecies are mostly right aren’t they? And Levi is sure whatever they’re doing is testing the boundaries of friendship. Maybe people do kiss their best friends around here. After all what would a street rat from the underground know. But Levi’s pretty sure it’s just Hanji.
“What are you thinking of?” Hanji asks, breaking the silence that comes with being the only two people awake in the dead of night.
Levi pulls himself out of his thoughts, the lines on his forehead relax, Hanji’s words looping monotonously in the back of his mind like a mantra. “Nothing,” he says, because he’s not quite ready to give Hanji the satisfaction of being right. But it’s mostly an inevitability anyway.
“Well... Just imagine I’m a girl you like... Or a boy... Both are fine,” Hanji says, “I don’t really care,” she winks at Levi.
And Levi still thinks this is a ridiculous idea. Then again they’re young and the experiences they have in this life are limited by the affordances of what comes with the job- or the people that come with the job.
Except they’re not young. Hanji has made it twenty two rounds around the sun without dying, without so much as a scar on her arm from that one time she had failed to check her blind spot. And that means something in their line of work.
And Levi has always been susceptible to persuasion. “Join the Survey Corps.” Erwin had said, sure it took near drowning with his head dunked in a drain and a plan he has since abandoned, but he’s here now. He’s here now in Hanji’s room in the dead middle of the night and maybe it means something because he’s here even though his head is still above water and nobody is commanding him to do anything.
But there’s still this feeling in his chest, like everything is wet and he’s drowning.
He clears his throat, “why are we doing this again?” Because he’s lost the plot somewhere between genuine annoyance and realising his annoyance is a farce.
“I don’t know... Pretend we’re the last two people on earth or something?” A shrug, then “got a good image in mind?”
Everything is so simple with her and Levi struggles to come up with an image to make it easier to breathe.
But Hanji is so close to him now that they’re bumping noses. And even in the dark she’s more vivid than any image Levi can think of.
He figures he doesn’t want to imagine.
He tucks a stray strand of hair that had escaped his braiding behind her ear. His fingers skim her cheek. And at this point, Hanji thinks maybe it’s pointless to pretend that she’s imagining that boy who tends to their horses back home, or the girl from the Garrison she couldn’t quite keep her mind off- until now.
But this is just practice, a little experiment, an experience bounded by its own set of rules- this is all just pretend, it doesn’t mean anything.
So Levi thinks fuck it, because Hanji might be right, they might die tomorrow, might as well live a little.
He doesn’t tell her he’s imagining daylight- the sun streaming through the day curtains, warming the sheets. He’s imagining that sliver of light on her face, catching fire in her eyes. The place within this ray of light is one of safety. Nobody can touch them there. And Levi wonders how long it will last them.
Hanji is surprised when he leans in first and kisses her. Tentatively at first, like he’s waiting to see if she will change her mind. But Hanji is resolute in all the ways he is, and she kisses him back with fervour. She imagines they’re younger. Imagines meeting under different circumstances. Imagines they don’t have a war to fight, and they’re sitting on the edge of the wall, shovel by their sides, peering far past the fields and she’s telling Levi all the ways the earth moves to form hills and valleys. And she thinks maybe they’ve always been friends.
But the image fades a little when she brings a hand to his face, cupping his cheek, and he sighs into the kiss. Besides, she’s already told him countless times how the earth breathes.
They pull apart to breathe because breathing is somehow necessary, Levi thinks maybe he’s getting used to drowning. His eyes are glazed over.
But he snaps out of it fast enough when Hanji breaks into laughter that sounds like the morning. He scowls and pulls her close by her ponytail, pressing his forehead against hers.
“You’re shit at kissing...” he murmurs.
“Really?” Hanji drops a peck on the tip of his nose, completely unconvinced, “I guess I just need more practice...”
But the clumsiness of youth doesn’t quite abate with practice.
They’re on an expedition and it's storming outside the tents and Levi makes himself at home in her tent. He’s so close to her now that she can hear him breathing. And she feels like a stupid teenager with a stupid crush. But that's exactly what she is.
When she's done pretending she's asleep, she opens her eyes only to find him staring at her in the dark. She holds her breath, but she doesn't look away. Because that's how they get you right? You lose some sort of secret competition and then everything goes down hill from there and you'll have to deal with the humiliation of it all. So she forces herself to look at him, thanking the gods for her bad eyesight.
A shock of lightning illuminates the inside of the tent like a paper lantern and finds the greys of his eyes. Hanji thinks she sees her reflection swimming in his irises. Swimming or drowning- well, there's a fine line isn't there? He shifts closer to her, scowling like he's moving against his will, and Hanji holds her breath. He wraps an arm lazily around her, pressing his face into her shoulder.
"Wha-" Hanji starts, clearing her throat before continuing, "what's this?"
"Whatever you want it to be..." Levi doesn't look up, but even so, Hanji knows he's frowning, "I'm cold..."
"Alright then..." Hanji chuckles, fingers scratching at the short hairs on his neck, "we're the last two people on earth waiting for the storm to pass..."
Levi thinks about thunderstorms, and sure enough, there’s a steady patter of rain he had tuned out earlier in favour of the thrum of Hanji’s heartbeat beneath his finger tips. He hates wet weather. It’s inconvenient to say the least. Earth becomes mud and everyone tracks said mud into the mess hall. He still remembers the way Isabelle looked when she died- the rain washed away the blood, she looked peaceful almost. Maybe it’s apt. The girl who loved storms spent her last moments on earth listening to the sound of thunder.
His breath evens out against her blouse, "and?" Levi wants her to continue, to fill the gaps of thunder with her voice, because that’s all he’s been thinking about lately and he thinks he knows why.
“And we hate each other’s guts...” Hanji grins.
“Why?” Levi asks, thinking Hanji is missing the point here.
“Everyone loves a good enemies to lovers story...” Hanji laughs.
“That’s dumb...” Levi says, but Hanji is so warm that it pulls him in.
“You’re dumb.”
He scoffs. “Fine.” He says, because Hanji is an inevitability, “and then what?”
She hums, thoughtful, “we hate one another until a storm rolls by...”
But it's not always storming, and in fair weather, it’s hard to say what you mean. And Hanji finally realises what she feels, it’s somewhat of a breakthrough. Yet, the first thought that flashes across her mind is how inconvenient this whole situation is. She had just been teasing. She just wanted to get a rise out of Levi. And now they’re spilling over the edges of “more than just friends”.
But there’s little time to think of the details. They get into trouble and Hanji blames it on the potent mix of youth and reckless abandon. Levi blames it on Hanji.
They crash a party for the high society snobs within the inner wall only because Erwin told them they couldn't come along. Hanji’s in a borrowed dress and Levi wonders why he lets himself get dragged into these situations. But there’s more alcohol and food than they’re used to, and they learn champagne goes straight to their heads.
“What now?” He asks, when they’ve stuffed themselves full of roast and potatoes and Hanji almost feels sick.
“Wanna dance?” She replies, pupils blown wide so he knows she’s not all there.
They’re too drunk to actually call it dancing, but Hanji remembers the basics. So she leads. And Levi thinks if he looks into Hanji’s eyes now his heart will explode and he’ll be a dead man. So he opts for staring at her clavicle and mumbling the first thought that comes to his mind.
“What?” Hanji grins down at him.
“What’s this?” Levi says again, because his heart is beating out of his chest and he feels like he's going insane.
Hanji looks down at their feet, still keeping rhythm in her head- they're doing a simple box step so they can't fuck up, no matter how drunk.
"A waltz?" She says, confused, because it should be obvious enough.
"Idiot..." Levi mutters, and Hanji thinks it could be the alcohol because his cheeks are red and he's leaning too much into her. So much that she trips.
They fuck up their rhythm.
The streets are cold. That's the only reason they're holding onto each other for dear life.
That and the copious amounts of champagne in their bloodstream. Bold, brash, bubbling. They had bolted the moment Erwin had spotted them, finger raised accusatorily in their direction, mouth agape with shock. And they had done such a good job avoiding him the entire night too, only to have their cover blown when they tumble to the ground in the middle of the ballroom, with Hanji falling atop of Levi, a shared gaze between them like a cliche.
Hanji is laughing so hard she has to crouch down in the middle of the streets, arms wrapped around her belly to stop the shaking. Her dress is stained at the hem and she'll have to wash it out before returning it to Lynne. But Levi has abandoned all notions of hygiene and neatness and he's now sitting on the ground with Hanji, watching her laugh. There's a smile tugging at the corners of his lips. And he thinks to himself yeah, this is inevitable.
"You know what one of the old snobs told me when you were busy chugging champagne?” Levi says, because the moon is out and it's so full that it's almost bursting at the seams. Nothing matters. The streets are cold, but Levi feels a fire coursing through his veins.
Hanji looks up at him, wiping the tears from her eyes, "what?"
“He told me ‘your wife’s a real handful’” Levi doesn’t know why he’s quite so breathless. But it doesn’t spare him the fact that he is.
“And what did you say?” She chuckles.
Levi makes the mistake of looking up into her eyes. Her eyes with their own gravitational pull, and Levi gets dragged into orbit. “yeah she is...”
“Ah...” Hanji replies, thinking maybe she needs more alcohol. Maybe they could stop at the pub on the way back. But the churning in her gut tells her otherwise. Besides, there's enough of this to go around- this thing she calls youth and reckless abandon. In a few years she'll call him an old man, the cadets will call him a relic. But that's the distant, distant future. For now they're young and the only thing that matters is the way she's smiling at him.
The rest of the walk is quiet, and Levi makes a passing comment about being the last two fucking people on earth with how empty the streets are (“did everyone just die?”). She chortles and he doesn't quite let go of her hand. Somewhere between the party and her room, Levi drapes his jacket over her shoulders. Well, technically her jacket that he borrows all the time. It smells like him now and Hanji holds it close to her with her other hand. And when they’re back at the barracks, he walks her to her door like any boy on a date would. So Hanji tells him just that- that he's behaving exactly like a boy with a hopeless crush-
A lover boy.
And she's not at all embarrassed at the words slipping past her lips. Then again, she has never been one to be particularly careful. She’s been told she’s not exactly good at holding her tongue.
They stand there in the silence, the partial darkness of the corridor. Levi only realises he’s staring at Hanji’s lips when he glances up momentarily and catches a glimpse of her eyes widening in realisation. Realisation like she has found something about him that only she knows. Levi feels vulnerable. But all he can think of is how the blush on the bridge of her nose is beautiful. Hanji looks like she’s about to say something, there’s something amusing about this situation and it’s bubbling between them- bold and brash. In another universe, she would have the opportunity to say it. Probably something along the lines of told you Levi! Enemies to lovers! and this is the part of the story where you kiss me...
But Levi decides he doesn’t want to hear anything she has to say, so he grabs the lapels of her jacket and pulls her close. The kiss that follows, a far too gentle succession to the feeling of crumpled fabric in his fists, a press of lips against the bridge of her nose, and another one- a chaser- on the tip of her nose.
She chuckles and he frowns at the offending noise. “What’s so funny?”
“You missed...” Hanji says before pulling him close by his belt loops and kissing him on the lips.
And there's a hunger that's ignited.
His jacket hits the floor first- the one he had draped around her shoulders. Then his shirt- the only fancy thing he owns. Then her dress-
Like a waltz for two- fingers reaching, exploring, lips crashing. But they're too drunk to call it dancing, sober enough not to call it a mistake. So when they're both naked, breathless forms in the dark, Levi reaches out to press their palms together.
“I don’t know how to be anyone’s lover...” he says just before they fall asleep, and Hanji's vision has adjusted to the dark. There are stars in his eyes, brilliant enough to pull Hanji into their orbit. This is the part of the story where she falls in love with her best friend, and he falls for his, and they know one another a little too much to use the word “love”. She can’t help the smile that spreads across her face-
“Neither do I...”
In uncharted waters, Levi can only hope for fair weather again. And maybe it comes in the form of Hanji knocking on his door the night he becomes captain.
“I like you Levi... Does that scare you?” She says from his bed. She’s never had the best timing. But this moment is as good as any other. One terrible mission, too many deaths, and the burden of greater responsibility later, and here they are. One too many revolutions around the sun. Enough for him to be seen as some sort of god, and her, an enigma.
“How much?” He answers. The bed dips where he joins her.
“What?”
“How much do you like me?”
There’s silence. Levi can hear his own heartbeat in his ears when he lies beside her.
“Like a sunbeam...”
He scoffs, “you’re not making sense four eyes...”
She chuckles, a kiss to his forehead, where lines have gathered- hold your horses Captain...
“Imagine you’re lying in bed and it’s been raining so it’s a little cold. It’s not uncomfortable, but you notice the chill and it wakes you a little. But then the sun filters through that gap in the curtains, soft and warm and it kisses your face,” she turns to him to press a kiss to his lips for clarity’s sake, “and there’s nothing in particular you have to do, so you go back to sleep, cradled by that sunbeam, like a cat... Nice huh?”
“Yeah...” Levi says, breathless. The atmosphere is thinning and if Hanji doesn’t let up, he’ll be gasping for air soon.
“That’s how much I like you...” she grins, matter of fact, like she’s talking about the weather, about how the sun rises in the east and sets in the west.
When he goes to sleep lulled by her soft snoring he’ll dream of Hanji. In his dream he tells her he’ll steal a cat for her. Because that makes sense somehow. He needs her to know how much he loves her too. It ends with her naming the cat Albert. Levi absolutely hates it. Or at least he pretends to.
But it’s the present and they’ve sunk back into comfortable silence.
This is the part of the story where you kiss me you idiot... he hears it in her voice, warm and playful.
So he does just that. And Levi figures maybe some part of him is a sucker for romantics.
“Help me capture a titan, Levi!”
Levi would glower at her, tell her no before she’s allowed to finish her sentence. But they head back to camp, titan in tow, captured alive. And perhaps this is as far as romance goes in this world.
And it becomes a ritual of sorts- if we make it back, dinner’s on the sucker with fewer kills.
Except this time the date is them tearing at each other’s clothes.
Hanji never understood why anyone would put this world at the centre of the universe. There’s just too much pride in that assumption. There’s nothing particularly special about this world, yet she will live, love, and die here. A cursed rock, a beautiful rock, orbiting the sun. This is the world in which the death greets them with the hospitality of an old friend. Of an old god that whispers in their ears-
Welcome home, my children.
But at twenty five revolutions around the sun, she can’t imagine being dead. She knows she doesn’t want to die, not really, not when there’s still so much beauty to behold. There’s so much beauty in the way his heartbeat feels against her temple, in the way her toes are peeking out of the duvet, in the way he’s holding her like she is his.
“You won this time Levi... You captured a fucking titan!” She says, meaninglessly. It doesn’t matter in the larger scheme of things. Hanji would get drunk mid-way through dinner and Levi would pay. That’s just how things work around here.
“You nearly died...” Levi says, “you nearly fucking died...” he’s calm now, all the anger, all the frustration he had, has now been wrung dry from his system. Now his face is pressed against her chest, and the marks he left are just starting to surface, more brilliant than her bruises from battle are.
“Yeah... Scary huh...”
So she thinks now is as good a time as ever. This moment is precious enough. She presses a kiss to his forehead.
“What do you want to do when this ends?” She asks, because a little wonder never hurt anyone:
“If you died, all that wouldn’t even matter... Levi says accusatorially, a petty way to be in their line of work. But it’s only because it scares him that nothing has come close to scaring him this much. If she dies, she takes everything that’s left of him with her. Levi doesn’t make the rules. That’s just how it works.
Hanji chuckles. “I’m sure you can easily find someone else... A nice little wife, an apartment in the city, a brood of kids?” She quirks a brow at him, completely missing the whole irony of lying in bed naked with a man she’s selling her little fantasy to. But she hears the others talk about it all the time- about settling down, having children. Besides this sliver of light will not last them.
“Is that what you want?” He asks.
Hanji ponders this for a moment, she thinks maybe not. It’s best not to drag someone into this life of hers, where nothing is guaranteed, where death lives on her doorstep and she knows it on a first name basis.
“No...” she answers simply. “I just want to sleep. Take a long nap... Wake up and realise it’s mid-day, then fall back asleep again.”
That sounds nice. That has always sounded nice. He thinks of sunbeams, of dust, of a stupid cat named Albert.
To build a house in another person all it takes is wonder and reckless abandon. And being around Hanji has granted Levi both.
“Maybe we could build a cottage in the forest...” he says like he’s dreaming and he has nothing to lose.
Levi doesn’t miss the crack in her voice, “didn’t peg you for a forest kinda guy...”
Levi shrugs, “figured you’d like the forest... Enough dirt for you to play in...”
Hanji chuckles breathlessly, turning to face Levi. She locks eyes with him, and she sees the boy she kissed in the dark “just to see what it feels like”.
“I don’t know how to be anyone’s lover, Levi...” her voice is a whisper, “I don’t clean, I hardly wash... I don’t know how to make bread...” After all, all things weird and abnormal come with their warning labels.
There’s a smile pulling Levi’s face.
“I do,” he says, “I’ll make the bread... Just promise me you’ll take a bath before dinner...”
Levi pictures that- a cottage in the middle of god forsaken nowhere, the last two people on earth- he glowers at her first, then they become friends, an inevitability. And now they will fall in love over a loaf of warm bread. Maybe there’s a storm outside. Maybe not. Doesn’t matter. They’re waiting on that sunbeam that always comes through their curtain in the mornings.
“Yeah...” she answers, it’s hard to breathe in vacuum. It’s hard to breathe when Levi has taken her breath away, “yeah okay...”
But Levi isn’t dead yet- not yet.
“You nearly fucking died...” Hanji had said, accusatorially. And even though she has fought it for years, she thinks maybe she has allowed herself to take him for granted. The invincible Captain Levi, now dredged up to shores like old treasure. And Hanji nurses him back to a soft glow. “What the fuck... You nearly died...” she says again, as if it isn’t already obvious by the state he’s in.
He looks at her, because moments like these are rare as of recent. He feels the ghost of her lips against his lingering under his bandages. From when she had breathed life back into his lungs. There’s still blood on her face- his blood. And even so, god, even so-
There’s sunlight percolating through the clouds, a sunbeam that reaches down to caress her face. She’s here now, this lover of yours, it says. And Levi almost confuses this moment for his dreams. But life on this unspectacular little rock has been kind, and this is reality. Slightly grimmer than he’d hope, but Hanji is still here. And he sees the years that have gone by in the way responsibility has weighed her down.
No matter. She’s here now. Waking up next to him in a beam of sunlight, dust rising and dancing like bubbles underwater. He’ll get up, warm the bread, and she’ll set two cups in front of them. And Levi would stare at his cup.
“It’s tea, idiot...” Hanji would say, but she has no business defending the cup of something that looks far too dark, too murky to be tea. So she laughs and adds a- “you know I’m really shit at making tea...”
He knows. And that’s a problem for later. For now, Levi imagines they’re the only two people left on earth.
“Maybe we could live here together... Right Levi?”
The thing about the sun. It will always be alluring to the little creatures that dwell in the leaf litter. But too much of a good thing would blind them. This little cursed rock will turn on itself, like a little ball of dirt being rolled off to some pre-determined spot. Completely meaningless in the larger scheme of things. But god, does Levi want to fly into the sun.
Instead he replies, best he can, “I don’t know how to thatch a roof...” And that’s unacceptable. It has to be. How are they going to survive in the forest without a roof. What are they going to do when the storm comes. And his reply reads with familiarity- I don’t know how to be a lover... Now a meaningless phrase exchanged between the two of them like a habit. As a warning to themselves to not get too comfortable in this world.
He hears his own heart shatter. This is the moment he realises there might not be a happy ending to their story. This is the moment he realises he had been hoping for one.
Hanji understands. She understands because she’s the same. So she breaks a smile at him.
“Neither do I...” she says. She can’t even make a decent cup of tea to save her life, and now she wants Levi to run away with her. What will they do. But god, she knows she can brave any storm with him.
“But when this is over... We can figure out how...” Levi says, laboriously, and he links his pinky with hers. He’s humanity’s strongest, surely he can learn to thatch a roof.
“Yeah...” Hanji says, breathless. She’s smart. She’ll figure it out. And she thinks she never wants to die. “Yeah okay...”
She takes this as her cue to lie beside him, head leaning against his good shoulder, hand over his heart. Hanji was right all along. Levi kisses her forehead and tells her he wants her.
“What’s this?” She whispers, eyelids getting heavy, like she’s going to drift off to a long sleep. By morning, the sun will caress her cheek, and if this life permits, she will fall back asleep again in Levi’s arms.
“Whatever you want it to be...” he replies.
“Okay...” she says-
We’re the last two people on earth, waiting for the storm to pass.

KnB Commentary: Kise Ryouta and the Curse of Being “Pretty Boy” in Shonen Anime
Cheerful, extroverted, happy-go-lucky and sunshine with a face, Kise Ryota is the screen ikemen in Kuroko no Basket. Although Kise is a cult favourite, but I think he is sometimes pushed aside with Momoi. In KnB people tend to focus more on the other GoMs rather than Kise. Here is my take on how Kise Ryota’s character and his types are scorned in Shonen Manga.
Tumblr media
Shonen and Shojo manga revolve around two different dimensions: while shonen manga focuses on friendships, journeys and solid characteristic developments, shojo manga focuses generally on the romance parts, interpersonal relationships, appearance and struggles of the ordinary main character. Both manga lauds ordinariness and makes the ordinary extra-ordinary one just by showing that they have the possibility to be sublime. While Shojo manga greatly appreciates male beauty to the point of worship, Shonen sort of looks down on male beauty: anyone who identifies himself as good looking, or wants to be good looking is put down by others around him. Let’s see how Kise fell into the same trap.
Kise is introduced in the story in a very Shojo manga fashion. He is looked from the female point of view of Seirin’s girl students as he walks down the main pathway of the school. That piece of scene almost reminded me Takumi Usui entering school in Kaichou wa Maid Sama. From that point, wherever he goes he is greeted and surrounded by female population en large, much to the annoyance of his team members and opponents. Similar to the effect of “male gaze”, exists a “female gaze” which supposedly decides the desirability of a boy, especially in a high school setting. Kise, being handsome by the contemporary Japanese standards thus somewhat becomes the focus of the female gaze which makes males around him conscious and equally anxious. This phenomenon can be asserted with Momoi’s first encounter in the anime with Kuroko in Aida Gym pool. When Kuroko is hugged by a very beautiful and buxom Momoi Satsuki, the boys on his team lament: “I am so jealous of you Kuroko, hope you’ll die.” This was from a rather “harmless” and “normal” bunch of High School Basketballers, then just imagine how it effects the powerhouse boys with similar primal instinct and with greater ego. Thus Kise is treated with hot-and-cold attitude from males around him: be its his former teammates or current.
Tumblr media
Kise is thus definitely an eligible bachelor and he surely knows it. However his self-awareness is without vanity or narcissistic edge. He is shown to be appreciative of female attention and not portray himself as a “playboy” or a “Scorer”; he is never addressed by anyone as “charan poran” (womanizer) in the series. This is a very contradictory attitude in Shonen anime. In shonen anime Male sexuality have very limited outlets: either one should be hyper-celibate and not pay attention to any organism marked as female, or one could be hyper-sexual to the point where they objectify the female form in a not so respectable manner--there is nothing in the Middle. In KnB Akashi, Kuroko and Midorima fall in the former end of spectrum while Haizaki Shogo and Aomine Daiki fall into the latter. Even dating and having girlfriend can make you the object of male scorn: in the anime Grand Blue, the department of Mechanical Engineer has a secret pact to stay single and when they find out that Iori Kitahara is living with Chisa (who is his cousin), they almost throw a violent fit. The male solidarity in Shonen thus ostricise the males who express appreciation in female company and show interest in courting and romance. Kise is snubbed in a similar manner for showing interest in a more feminine side. A same kind of snubbing was delivered to Hiroshi Fukuda of Seirin when he confessed on the rooftop that he wanted to get into the team for dating someone. In Free Momotarou Mikoshiba too, is either ridiculed or snubbed by his teammates for openly admitting to like Gou Matsuoka.
Tumblr media
Out of all the Generation of Miracles characters, I think Kise is the most discriminated of all. His discrimination is the unsual kind: he is too important in the plotline to be comic relief like Takao and Izuki and he is too cheerful enough to be the bad boy. So what kind of discrimination does he face? He faces the discrimination for being good looking. Yes, there is a thing to be discriminated for being good looking. I also think Kise has been played within the character of being the “dumb blond”. He is portrayed as “pretty boy” and is expected to limit himself within it. His cheerful attitude is often met with cold shoulder and it is absolutely normalised within the storyline. Unlike other players who greet their rivals outside the courts with a broody attitude and slightly glaring eyes, Kise is the one who advocates “Yesterday’s rivals are today’s friends”. This is a very positive attitude to use in real life to keep the unhealthy competitiveness in check, but it is met with a scorn in the anime. It is shown as if being cheerful is the by-product of being good looking and the former should reflect the latter. This is perhaps the reason Kise’s playing style was completely sniped out of the scene from being “the best of all”. According to the society, a good looking person is just an eye-candy for anyone to drool over and if they have too much agency or talent people enviously comment “(s)he gets all that because of the looks”. It stems from the insecurity of one person having too much social power. The entire thing is very limiting. Kise is not only good-looking, he is acing his modelling career, a field which is highly demanding and taxing and at the same time he is doing well in basketball also in a nationally reputed school. These attributes somewhat gets overshadowed because he is somewhat only identified on screen for his looks. This fact is highlighted with his rivalry with Haizaki Shogo. Haizaki, instead of acknowledging Kise as a player, “marked his territory” by “boning” one of the girls claiming to be Kise’s girlfriend.
Tumblr media
Kise is very much aware of the fact that the swarming bunch of girls are intrinsic to his image, especially as a model and for this reason he tries to be respectful towards them. However, he does not identify the admiration of the fan-brigade with genuine affection. This is the core fact which Haizaki misinterprets about Kise that he derives power from the admiring fangirls. Haizaki despite being the antagonist is pretty much shares the similar prejudice with the people near Kise: that Kise Ryota begins and ends with looks and even his playing style “perfect copy” is less than original. But Kise is not the prejudices that surround him, he is affectionate, loyal and genuine with enough dedication to pursue what he loves. The ideal type of Kise : “a girl that won’t tie me down” says a lot about him. He is eager to meet someone who will respect him for who he actually is and not for his looks or fame. He too is someone who grew out of seeing the surface and judge to observe someone and understand---that is how he started to respect Kuroko at the first place. At the end, when he loses to Touou, he sheds the image of a “cool handsome boy” and cries like a baby in public; something his own captain Kasamatsu or his former teammate Midorima could not do. This shows a lot of courage and strength but also shows that expressing ugly emotions in a public can also be dignified and not necessarily be stripping to masculinity.

Hi! If it’s ok to send you asks that aren’t Levihan related, what do you think about Jean as a character and his growth? What about his unrequited crush on Mikasa?
Hello, thank you for your ask!
Jean is one of my favorite characters, but it may disappoint you that so far I can't fully analyze this character with consistency, because of C139.
In this chapter, Jean said that Eren is 律義(conscientious, integrity)くそバ野郎め
I just ??????conscientious?integrity? I really don't understand what he means,OTL.
So I have given up understanding C139. Jean in my heart is still the boy described in the previous138 chapters. I don't know if this will lead to a great difference from your view.
What about his unrequited crush on Mikasa?
For this, I would first explain that I don't ship Jeankasa. Because some official materials are too disgusting. There are panels in Chibi mangas: Jean asks Connie to help him steal Mikasa's underwear. Connie stole it wrong and it became Eren's.
This is a serious trigger to me. But I have to admit that there are also obscene jokes in many mangas. It should not be to portray Jean as a pervert. For example, in the anime Naruto, Naruto's Ninja often appeared a bunch of naked women. These authors just don't think there's anything disgusting with what they drew. They subconsciously used women as just materials for sexual jokes.
In the manga, talking about romantic love(or sexual attraction?), I think Jean is a very ordinary boy, often fantasizes about being noticed by all beautiful girls, and enjoy saying some indecent jokes with sexual hints even when working without any awareness of improper. This is so common in reality that I have encountered it almost everytime when I had dinner with several males, but I can't attack others publicly, but could just pray that they'd better never find a girlfriend until they learn basic manners. It's this widespread and unconscious disrespect in society that makes me not ship Jean with anyone.
But, even Jean is an annoying silly boy, in manga he shows great respect for Mikasa. This may be because isym himself has special feelings for Mikasa, or for Mikasa's strength. I like the interaction between Jean and Mikasa, especially when Jean yells that he'd like to bet Mikasa win over Annie with his dinner. It's very cute, and there's no annoying male gaze.
Tumblr media
I like his attention and admire regardless of gender to Mikasa. Mikasa is worthy of love and respect. In C136, Mikasa said, I will do it.I don't want Eren to continue the massacre. Even that's for protecting us and this island, I want to stop him.
Let's see Jean's look. I think he have remembered that he once said to Armin: then, will we stop him? What Eren do is to protect us, so he sacrifice mankind outside the Wall.
——And Mikasa was the first to answer, I'm going to stop him. This girl seems to only care for her family, never express any great opinions on morality and ideals, and don't seem to be soft hearted and regret about killing the enemies, but she would not be wavered by those seemed affectionate and moving excuses about politics and greater good. When horrible atrocities happen, she won't follow and give up her responsibility of interfere. She just chooses to express her opinion by action.
Tumblr media
The shadow of the dead appeared before their eyes. Many people recognized Marco for Jean, but did not recognize the other person next to Marco for Mikasa. He is Ian, the soldier of the Garrison Corps who was eaten by the titans in Distrost Trost. I guess Mikasa always remembered him. She never mentioned him, but his care for her and Eren, his desperate struggle to be sacrificed for the possible change of the fate of mankind, of his beloved hometown, has been engraved in her heart. He never knew that there were people outside the wall. He died in the belief of mankind. As Hanji said, I guess Mikasa believes that Ian is not a narrow-minded nationalist, and she also knows that she should not fail him, and should not reduce his heroic sacrifice of protecting his people become a crime of indirectly destroying the world.
Mikasa's love for Eren occupied most of her character's arc, and I don't like this arrangement too. But besides this, she is a honorable good person, I guess Isym gave her qualities of normal civilians he admired most.
This is my favorite moment for Jeankasa. Unlike the drastic changes brought by Marco's death to Jean's outlook on life, Mikasa never focused on Jean. She is also not good at words and can't bring any encouragement and suggestions to Jean, but her every move over the years has always been in Jean's eyes. They are all very proud and true to themselves who cherish ordinary life and do not disire to pursue distant ideals. They once thought that protecting their relatives around them is the whole of life in this cruel world, but as they contacted more and more friendly and enthusiastic people, they began to respect and insist on the universal morality and kindness more firmly than most people , they opened their heart to the outside world. A clear self-cognition prevents them from being easily blinded by the fanatical atmosphere and inflated vanity.
They are not to bring any change to each other, but I think their mere existence is the recognition and comfort of each other in this cruel world, warning each other to what they should do. Jean was also the first person to put the fact that Eren had to be killed in front of Mikasa.
So although his crush on Mikasa was unrequited, I am not particularly sad for Jean. I think he really doesn't care about it. And I wonder that he's possible used to being rejected by beautiful women, haha.
Jean were fond of Mikasa at first sight because she had "the beautiful black hair of his dream lover". Later, he respected Mikasa, admired her ability, resolutely helped her when she was in danger, and was moved by her honest heart and firm will. But these are also the curiosity of teenagers and the bonds between friends, which are very precious and have never been let down. I don't feel that Jean is very obsessed with this unrequited crush. He fantasized about establishing a family with Mikasa, but anyway, he is still interested in sexual fantasies about other women. OTL, this kind of crush, I think, is too common around the real life, it's a kind of relish that made life less serious. It doesn't contain many regrets. Maybe Erwin has more regrets for Mary than Jean, lmao
I think he will have an ordinary relationship with a black haired beautiful woman, he also deserves a complete and happy family he wants for his sympathy and kindness.
I also hope Mikasa can spend her life with someone who has nothing to do with Eren. She has walk away from the isolated cabin surrounded by the totalitarianism and evil of the outside world. I believe she will live in peace and tranquility
Ah, I answered half of your questions... Did I talk too much about Mikasa, OTL? The other half, I have to spend more time organizing my thoughts and materials. Sorry, lmao

Title: Euphoria
Side note: MALE! Hange x Levi | Fluff
Description: eu·pho·ri·a
yo͞oˈfôrēə/
noun
a feeling or state of intense excitement and happiness.
●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●
THIRD PERSON's POV:
It had been two years since the war had ended, a year since they have married. It was frowned upon by some people, but neither could care less, they were happy together.
Their comrades and friends wished them a lifetime of happiness, even Mikasa who had begun to warm up to her uncle. Their wedding day was filled with love and happiness, close friends and family attended, wanting nothing more for them to live their life.
Hange and Levi had never thought it would be possible, to achieve something like this: the rest of their days spent carefree. The couple laughed and made jokes as they packed up, moving to a house they had found in the forest, near a little lake.
But it wasn't too far from the city, and as they got on their horses, they told the city goodbye. At least, for now.
•••
"Levi?" The male spoke, looking at his lover with unease.
"What is it?" He asked, turning to give his husband his full attention. Wondering what his spouse was so stressed about, "Four-eyes, are you okay?"
"Now that the titans are gone, I've been thinking." The former commander started, wringing his hands together nervously, "I want a family."
The raven haired male raised an eyebrow, "A family?"
"Yes, ever since I was a little boy, I had wanted to start a family of my own. It's what I've always wanted, since I never actually knew my parents or had any brothers or sisters."
Levi chuckled, "I know you want to start a family Shittyglasses, but I'm not a woman. Neither are you."
Hange smiled, "You know what I mean Shorty, come on, what do you say? Can we adopt children?"
"Tch, well, you're right about there no longer being titans anymore. So what the hell, let's raise as many brats as we can." He smiled softly, warmth spreading through his chest as he saw his lover in pure europhia. Both of them celebrating the night together, happiness and love in their hearts.
•••
"Oh, thank you very much. Have a nice day!" The male greeted, a smile on his face as he tore open the letter from Sina Orphanage.
Tears in his eyes as he sat at the desk, burying his face into his hands. Teardrops staining his face and the letter, unknown to him that his former Captain walked in.
"Hange, what's wrong?!" Levi asked, concern washing over him. Looking at the letter underneath his best friends elbows.
"S-Shorty..." He choked out, turning to face Levi, a smile on his face, "We're adopting a child! We're starting a family!"
In those moments, the married couple felt something they haven't felt since the day they wed: euphoria. Intense happiness.

Helllllloooo!!! I love your fics so much! I wanted to know if you had fic recs?
thank you for ruffling my feathers a bit haha, sure i have some fic recs!
just_quintessentially_me! i could probably mention my favorite fics of theirs, but you probably read all of them already.... but they're so good!! they're an absolute legend!! my favorite levihan writer ever without a doubt! their action fics? spectacular and i can talk about them for days at end. their fluffy or angsty one-shots? hilarious and heart-wrenching! anyway, yeah.... i definitely recommend
The Experiment (Attack on Titan // LeviHan) by KakashiSensei - wow, just wooow! i love this work so much! there is a second part to this fic and it's a masterpiece in its own right with so much mystery, tension and romance, the events take place during the timeskip and it's fantastic, but the first part?? almost everything happens in the underground and i'm just endlessly in love with the worldbuilding?? the author created a whole ass world and society out of this setting that we saw only glimpses of? amazing, i'm in awe. and relationships between levi and hange! so complicated but sweet, i love this version of levi so much you have no idea. he's a little angry gremlin who is fierce, kind and loves his four-eyes (and is also constantly horny, what a mood)
the most devoted heart by mikasasofficialhandholder - i've read this fic recently, but it's so good! heartbreakin and tragic and i love how levi was written, his grief and pain were described so well.
A Little Help Goes A Long Way by revolutionrose - a very special fic for me that basically started this whole tragic mess that i call 'shipping levihan', but it's very, very funny, very, very sweet and i love this fic so much! i still remember the day that i've read so vividly, it's fantastic, if you haven't read, please do, you'll love it, i'm sure
Allowance by eggs_and_toast - another very special fic for me!! i was reading it when mentally i wasn't feeling very well, and it cheered me up like nothing else! it's full of frienship, romance and sexual tension between levi and hange. you won't regret reading it!

hi ness! do you have any levihan angst fanfic recs? i already read from tundrainafrica, fanmoose, mannateac and from you haha.. maybe you might have read a hidden gem fics there most esp based from the recent final chapter.
(and also for pipz who will read this ask! you guys might have some recs! thank you!)
I wanted to take my time with this ask because I do have some recommendations for you, anon!
1. the most devoted heart by  mikasasofficialhandholder
(post-canon/139, i got misty-eyed reading this, it’s fucking beautiful)
Summary: There’s an almost painful tug at his heart. It’s regret, he realizes, startling. He’s never wanted to have any regrets at all, living his life unapologetically and tearing his way through the world. But all his regrets are inextricably tied to Hange. (Levi returns to the forest.)
2. yellow by @ariadneamare
(modern AU, this one’s pretty well known tho)
Summary:  In another life, they found each other again. This reality, the next, and a thousand more he would keep coming back home for she was his mosaic of good memories.
3. Worth a Thousand Words by @someonestolemyshoes
(another modern au, college levihan. really good pls read)
Summary: Levi likes photography. This, in itself, is no great secret. Hange can barely remember a time he wasn’t following after her with a camera strapped around his neck, or packed into his bag—always within reach, should something striking catch his eye. A little neon plastic toy, at first; each click of the shutter cycled through preloaded images, expert shots of famous landscapes, places they could only dream of seeing. And then, a polaroid—still a toy, in essence, still plastic, still gaudy, but this one took real pictures in real time, and spit them out into their eager, shaking fingers within seconds. (Hange discovers a secret facet to Levi's favourite hobby)
4. ichor in his veins, ashes in his wake by fulminares
(post-canon/139, proper alliance members conclusion and interactions plus Hange’s funeral)
5. The Secret Society of the Children of the Forest by RedChestnut
(post-canon, Levi and Hange’s story explored by Gabi and Kaya as pen-pals)
Summary: Amid hope, postwar political tensions, and the unreliable postal service between Paradis and Marley, the Secret Society of the Children of the Forest works on its most important mission: rescuing the memory of the late 14th Commander of the Survey Corps, Hange Zöe. And with it, the smile of a certain captain. An unknown love story, through the eyes of children.
6. Unintended Consequence(s) by Ella3982
(has tons of triggering material including graphic descriptions of t*rture so please read the tags)
Summary: Not all of the Anti-Personnel Control Squad died when the cavern collapsed; some of them escaped through the tunnel Hange, Moblit, and Armin used. And when the two parties meet, the Anti-Personnel Control Squad takes the three Scouts hostage with the intent to force the Survey Corp's hand. This slight deviation from canon leads to major consequences that have a resounding effect on the characters involved, both implicitly and explicitly.
This story takes a deeper look into the mental worlds of Hange and Levi, and it deals with both canon and non-canon events. Despite being pushed to the brink, they keep going - but living as a member of the Scout Regiment is never easy, so their road is one wrought with tragedy and desperation. Behind the scenes, how do they fare with their new responsibilities in the wake of new and old trauma?
7. Such Small Things by Lucyh95
(drabble, post 132 Levi thinking of his interaction with Hange in the ship)
Summary: He did not have to look to know; it was still there. And it was something so small and yet—
8. Remembrance by Lucyh95
(another post 132 levi left alone with his thoughts of Hange)
Summary: Now, seated here, with his hammering heartbeat in his ears, and with nothing else to do, he couldn't help but remember.
9. An Echo From the Past by Lucyh95
(ch. 132 drabble from Levi’s pov of the Dedicate Your Heart scene)
Summary: He should have known. Really.

hiiii, just a curious anon passing by!! what are your aot ships and how did you come to like these pairs? :DD (sorry if this has been asked before, i had a grand time reading your posts and might've missed it!)
aww thanks for enjoying my stuff!! that’s what I’m here for :) and oh boy, here we go... this is gonna become a long post
first is my otp, reibert. I could go on about them for hours. my favorite pairing for so many reasons holy shit
• we saw in season 4 that reiner was kind of the runt of the warriors and had a rivalry with porco. on the other hand, bertholdt was there to pick him up when he was knocked down and never belittled or attacked him, also seen when we’re shown marcel’s death during the paradis operation. when annie attacked him, bertholdt just wanted it to stop, and he never blamed him for what happened 😭
• of course this also leads into the shared trauma dynamic, they went through so so much shit together and basically became war criminals when they were just CHILDREN. and they believed they were doing the right thing. their story is just so tragic bruh I can’t
• we see that reiner suffers from a split personality and bertholdt is obviously very affected by it, and it hurts him to see reiner like that. “we’re not soldiers, we’re warriors.” and of course how he covers his mouth and looks upset when reiner talks about being soldiers.... ugh it hurts
• now that I mention his split personality I want to add something based on that: reiner isn’t actually into historia. he’s gay. homosexual. I say this because in people with split personalities it’s not uncommon for them to also have different sexualities for their personas, e.g. one personality can be straight and the other can be gay, bi, or what have you. thus I believe his “true” identity is gay and his soldier persona thinks he’s straight since he’s been conditioned into thinking he’s a soldier, and the “perfect soldier” needs the “perfect girl”, thus leading him to believe he likes historia when he... really doesn’t. and bertholdt has to watch this happen knowing that it’s all an unwilling masquerade, but he can’t say anything about it for fear of blowing their cover. (historia is a lesbian anyway, which I’ll get into later)
• we very clearly see that reiner is suffering a lot from a guilty conscience in season 4 (re: suicide attempt) and he’s a broken man after coming back from paradis... alone. he blames himself for what happened and just wants to die because he has nobody left to love. of course this is why I make modern aus where everyone is alive and happy because I’m coping skghskjgh
• just imagine the long-term mutual pining potential because they’re both dense as hell and won’t admit their love for each other GDHKJGFHD. one doesn’t admit his feelings because he doesn’t want to damage his pride and the other doesn’t admit his because he doesn’t want to risk ruining their relationship as it is and losing what they already have. two bros chilling in a hot tub five feet apart because they won't admit their undying love for each other
• TLDR they’re in love dont @ me
next we have yumihisu. my girls....... my giiiiirls.......
• I love how this is one of the ships that almost everyone in the fandom can unanimously agree on, and for good reason. their dynamic is just so sweet and it’s so obvious that they care for each other immensely, e.g. ymir believing it’s her responsibility to protect her
• I also really like the idea of historia being the “popular girl” and ymir doesn’t like her at first because she doesn’t get the hype but once they start talking more ymir really warms up to her and eventually it leads to the mutual pining
• it’s just so obvious that ymir loves her. so much. like that scene where she wrote a letter to historia before she went to marley saying that she just wishes they could’ve gotten married? felt like a stab in the chest. why couldn’t they get married and be happy 😭
• I’m such a slut for the “peasant falls in love with royalty” dynamic anyway
erurihan my beloveds
• okay listen I love levihan and eruri so much but consider: they’re all dating each other 👀 I hc levi as poly anyway, he doesn’t seem like the kind of person concerned about monogamy. levi has two hands after all and they’re for hange and erwin
• all they have is each other. they’re the only veterans left and they’ve lost so many friends and found family and I just. ufhgufhgkjbhhh they all care about each other so much. (pre season 3 because I’m coping)
• YOU live in a society, I live in denial
I have other ships so if you want a part 2 just ask 🙏
