plugging this because it’s about historical fiction and pirates.
Presenting: Anne Bonny (fictionalized because there’s so little information on morally questionable, probably bi, definitely cross dressing, pirate war crime commiter), Sylvia (a vampirate), Mastani (a pirate), Louise/Louis (a pirate) & Doria my mermaid.
Because they’re by me they’re all bi but they’re very different individuals. More info below.

Anne Bonny, Irish pirate, crossdresser, probably bi cause Mary Read and Calico Jack. My Anne sticks as much to what we do in fact know as possible (which is scarce cause records) but she’s bi, and she/her to allies they/them to strangers/enemies. Also my Anne never settled or died or “pleaded their belly” but my Anne is fiction and never got caught by the English.
When I was a child I really liked Anne Bonny, and Joan of Arc and Rani Lakshmi Bai. I guess it shouldn’t shock anyone that I can fence (though I’m out of practice) am genderqueer, and swing both ways, both with a sword and not.
Sylvia: antagonist and ex girlfriend of my oc, Livia, Byzantine Greek vampire pirate and goth chick with medium abilities. For VTM folk, she’s a Lasombra. (She/her)
Mastani: based on Mastani & Rani Lakshmi Bai. Golden age of piracy (early 18th century) south Asian Hindu pirate, bi af, can slash you apart, also skilled navigator of every ship she’s ever been on. (She/they).
Louis/Louise: known as Boucher or “the butcher” based vaguely on Max from black sails. He/she/they, known atrocity commiter and gaslighter. Haitian Creole from the golden age of piracy (early 18th century) would probably date Esmeralda the pirate queen and bring out the worst in her. Their two redeeming qualities are the fact they free instead of sell slaves as a pirate and their capacity to love. Genderqueer, bi af and definitely not white.
Doria: mermaid, I haven’t fleshed her out as much as the others, but she’s based on Ariel (in the novel by Hans Christian Andersen) bi, none human, maybe immortal-ish. Falls really hard and fast for people and such, usually ends up accidentally destroying them, or herself. I wanted to make a “monster” that’s very clearly “other” and not in the vampire uncanny valley sort of way but scary unless you look deeper. She can look human but she doesn’t frequently. Doria means “of the sea” in greek or “dark ocean” I just wanted to stress the universality of love. I genuinely do not know what the mermaid allegory is in this case, yet. (She/her).

CHRONIC ANOVULATION
Chronic anovulation happens when an egg (ovum) doesn’t release from the ovary during the menstrual cycle. An egg is needed to have a pregnancy. The process of ovulation begins when your hypothalamus (a part of your brain) releases Gonadotropin-Releasing Hormone (GnRH). GnRH causes your pituitary gland (a gland in your brain) to secrete Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) and Luteinizing Hormone (LH). Chronic anovulation is a result of an imbalance of hormones that cause a woman to ovulate and may be part of the condition polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Irregular menstruation can also indicate anovulation, and we have a variety of diagnostic tools to help determine the cause of irregular cycles. It has the following indications to be nursed immediately.

IRREGULAR PERIODS:If the length of time in between your periods keeps changing, it’s considered an irregular period. The average menstrual cycle is 28 days, but changing a couple of days shorter or longer than that should be noted.
HEAVY OR LIGHT PERIODS:A heavy period is defined by losing over 80 ml of blood within your period and/or having a period that lasts longer than seven days. Blood loss of fewer than 20 ml throughout your period is considered a light period.
LACK OF PERIODS:Missing one or more periods without being pregnant could be a sign of anovulation. It is also known as amenorrhea.
LACK OF CERVICAL MUCUS:Right before and during ovulation, you usually have the most vaginal discharge called cervical mucus. It usually looks like raw egg whites. If you don't have this discharge, it is the symptom of anovulation.
IRREGULAR BASAL BODY TEMPERATURE:Your basal body temperature is the actual temperature when you are at rest. It’s usually taken after you wake up and before you’ve done any type of physical movement or activity. Ovulation can cause a slight increase in your basal body temperature.
MEDICATIONS:
Most of the time, the medications used for treating anovulation are fertility drugs.
CLOMIPHENE CITRATE:This medication helps to correct ovulatory irregularities and is a selective estrogen receptor modulator found to be effective in inducing ovulation in nearly 80% of the cases.
HUMAN CHORIONIC GONADOTROPIN INJECTION:This hormone causes your ovary to release an egg. A synthetic form of it can be injected to help treat anovulation. It’s often taken with clomiphene citrate.
FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE INJECTION:If your body isn’t making enough FSH or if the other treatments for anovulation haven’t worked, your healthcare provider may have you get an injection of synthetic FSH to help your ovary release an egg.
GONADOTROPIN-RELEASING HORMONE AGONISTS AND ANTAGONISTS INJECTIONS:An injection of GnRH agonists and antagonists helps to control the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) your body secretes, which is the most needed one for ovulation.

You know, I don’t entirely understand how Bungie is supposed to get around this supposed sin of putting a person of color in some kind of antagonistic role when 99% of the NPC cast are POC.
Like, in regard to the last two seasons, 1) what non-POC character do you place in an adversarial role who 2) also makes sense for the story that Bungie is trying to tell that season?
Amanda Holliday?
The entirety of Vanguard & City leadership is either Awoken, a POC, or racially ambiguous.
I do not understand how you expect Bungie to be able to tell a coherent story with the characters at hand and still make these folks multidimensional characters with like inner lives and junk.
Like, welcome to an (apparent) downside of having a diverse cast of characters: Occasionally, somebody has to be an antagonist.

astronomically late to this, but can you say why you dislike lyse? after playing all msq, it just felt like she was not all that well written and stole the spotlight a bit, but everyone seems to absolutely despise her, to the point its gotta be something beyond personal opinion and there's something i must've missed with her
I'll preface this by saying I don't despise her or hate her or anything, I just don't like her. Like, I'm not burning her photo every morning or making voodoo dolls of her, but I definitely enjoy her not being in the scene, you feel me?
Ok, with that out of the way, I just feel like she doesn't stand a chance against literally anyone else of the recurring cast when it comes to... Anything. She's not particularly helpful in any situation, doesn't have much to contribute, doesn't really have a whole lot of character to her, and her best aspects, which were to be a funny background event, sort of evaporated when she stopped being Yda, leaving her with nothing. Stormblood was, in part, supposed to be her big moment, and I was actually excited about that, because I wanted to see what they'd do with her, but they... Just didn't do shit with her gkwopgj4opg
Like her sole tangible contribution is rousing a few people from that one village, and... That's it. And for that, she gets made leader of the Resistance by Dying McOlddude? When M'naago and other far more seasoned and experienced members of the Resistance are right there? And have been for years...? This whelp of a girl that arrived like a few days ago? Because she had 'heart' or whatever? It kiiiinda felt like the narrative was bending over backwards to justify having Lyse around at all, and it all comes across as too artificial, just... Not really believable, which stands out like a cumstain on Yotsuyu's hair because literally the previous expansion we had Alphinaud having to grow into the immense pants he decided to wear, with all the growing pains that entailed. And, again, she doesn't do shit dude! It's crazy! Literally everything that is accomplished in Stormblood is thanks to:
Warrior of Light -> The muscle, which might sound demeaning to some, except it is a very important task, especially when muscle is what legit saves the day in Doma and by extension back in Ala Mhigo as well because Muscle is what you need to convince the Xaela to help you out, which in turn gave Hien a massive army of strong Au'ra and flying mounts to do all sorts of crazy shit, crazy shit he does in your benefit after Doma.
Alphinaud -> The brain, and also the mastermind behind that one sneaking operation, as well as negotiating a lot of sundry but cumulatively essential things throughout the adventure.
Tataru -> The negotiator, ever operating behind the scenes to get you intel and good deals when it comes to going to new places or finding out where to go next.
Raubahn and the Alliance -> Putting these together because they are the main muscle and brain behind every big operation undertaken, facilitated and made possible by the three people above.
Hien, Yugiri and Gosetsu -> Trained, organized, and roused the Doman Resistance, put the course of action in motion, made shit work.
The Xaela Tribes -> Directly worked with Hien, functioning as their main army.
But what DID Lyse do beyond being a mascot in a pretty red dress? Hell she even steps down after it's over so Raubahn, far more experienced dude, can lead the show instead. I just feel like the narrative wanted to make something with Lyse but then didn't really know WHAT to do with her, and by the end of it, did nothing, except tell you "oh yeah she's important" while literally everyone around her was doing a lot of backflips and pirouettes and being useful.
And she's not really a fun character besides. Hell, later on she even is like "oh yeah we gotta let that beast tribe we know is antagonistic and Tempered in the meeting!" and that gets a fucking bunch of people Tempered by Lakshmi. Good going, Lyse.
So basically it just feels to me that things would've been better if we just... Didn't have Lyse around. Legitimately things would've been largely the same. At least it feels like that. More than anything, she feels like the reason why we go to Ala Mhigo in the first place and fuckall else, made all the more apparent by how enjoyable pretty much everyone is in Stormblood.

thoughts on season of splicer ending
warning: spoilers for the entire season, general discussion of leaks, and absolutely being Bungie critical. Basically trying to write this out and figure out my own thoughts in the writing
I guess my first thoughts are what everyone's talking about: Osiris.
All the wild theories about if he's been replaced, controlled, playing 5d chess, etc. tldr: leaks say that from season of the Hunt it hasn't been Osiris but Savathun. Yeah I've read people's compilations of proof until I rapidly got bored with them. I'll be bluntly honest, if Bungie is going for some sort of imposter story-line then they're doing a fucking awful job at telling it.
a) A good imposter story-line needs to establish to the audience that there is the possibility or replacement/control
b) characters in the story themselves should be aware of point A and be actively considering it in their decision making
c) if the imposter is doing something the original didn't than clearly show audience the imposter is there.
I would say Bungie didn't do any of these, no the lore page of Savathun's human disguise falling apart around her doesn't count, because Bungie has long had a problem of putting story relevant plot details in lore pages and then not referencing them ingame. Lore should accentuate story, not provide key details to the story.
If you want to see a good imposter story-line look at Forsaken, and how they worked to make it obvious to someone who didn't know who Mara Sov was that something was up.
Most of the proof people cite is either cherry picking ambiguous things Osiris has said, or pointing out inconsistencies in writing. IMO not much of the evidence holds up because multiple characters this season (Saint, Lakshmi, Mithrax) have been written inconsistently with past appearances and without nuance; because their character has to carry the plot in a certain way or there are limits on recording dialogue for override/expunge.
My point in recapping the Osiris thing, is that from a thematic view at the end of the season Osiris is Osiris and I'm judging the story from the view of the season not how will the story be in the future.
very cynical take that as much praise as Bungie wants for working to make a high profile gay relationship be shown in game after a writer confirmed it on twitter
if leaks are right: if Osiris hasn't been Osiris for the past 3 seasons then none of the scenes with Saint are real or matter, and it invalidates all the emotional grief of Sagira being dead. It's 3 seasons of character development and effort wasted
or: they took the first chance they could to make one of them an unsympathetic villain and write him out of the story.
(yeah destiny has other queer character but how many of them are alive and matter to the story? When was the last time Ana's girlfriend was mentioned?)
The game is clear that for all the talk about "vex tech influence" Lakshmi's views and choices were her own, so the same for Osiris: he is responsible for helping Lakshmi and is responsible for all the civilian deaths, he's the 2ndary Human villain of the season.
Which brings me to my point (that I've seen others say) is that Bungie should have given a second thought to having their all of their human antagonists be PoC characters this expansion. Osiris, Lakshmi, and Saladin last season. For Lakshmi and Saladin they weren't just antagonists, they were written to be bigots for the community to dislike. Yes Destiny has a lot of PoC characters and anyone can be a villain, but IMO its a bad look from a company who talks so much about social justice. It wouldn't matter except Bungie wanted the message of the season to be anti-racism, and I'm comparing it within the context of how often minorities are the villains in games/US media. I don't think it was deliberately done, I just think it is something that like last season's issues with proving grounds and antisemitism they didn't care or bother with a sensitivity reader.
It's obvious this season they were going for a very obvious reference to Trump and modern day fears about refugees with Lakshmi, and it's a bad look that they did with a Indian female character and refugees are the enemy crab aliens. I'm also not saying that female characters can't be villains, but did the Bungie writers not think about just how nasty gamers would get in either slurs, insults, or expressing wishes for violence, and how pervasive and visible it would be?
I'm genuinely curious why the writers went for such a heavy handed analogy, and a story-line that feels like it comes from an afterschool special. The Eliksni have been enemies in atleast 4 expansions now, there could have been a more nuanced story other than "House of Light is good keep on killing all other Fallen". At the end of the season the game treated the attack on the City being Lakshmi and Osiris' fault, and all the people who don't like the Eliksni (say the people doing hate crimes in the lore) left with the factions so "problem resolved" . Lakshmi gets a simple karmatic death, in an area where multiple reddit threads express how they love tbagging the corpse. The ending cutscene didn't feel super inspiring to me it just felt unrealistic not just in real life where things aren't that simple but also within Destiny's story; the "you are my family" line felt cringe to me, probably because it felt unearned.
That's kind of the problem of the season isn't it, that the earliest planned game based decisions like having a Vex seasonal enemy and getting rid of the Factions determined the cast of characters with ties to the Vex and factions. So you just fight x many Vex bosses until you defeat Quria, then there's a break for Solstace, but on Reset-Tuesday with no warning things escalate because its epilogue time.
Sadly I forget who said that "it felt like the plot needed to hit one beat a week" meaning one issue had to get resolved enough for the community to talk about (except for when we take 3 weeks off for solstice). Each week there has to be some sort of hook to avoid the overblown "content drought". So multiple times you will have characters change their mind or their deep held beliefs after one counter argument is presented. (big example is Saint changing his mind not over the season but after one cutscene). City politics and factions don't matter aside from dialogue in a few different weeks because they'll be gone at the end of the season but in the meantime characters needed to talk about something to prompt fandom engagement. example: the fandom argues about governance of the last city for a while before the argument burn out since the relevant lore wasn't designed to hold up to close scrutiny.
just, I'm a politically active leftist in a red conservative state so maybe i just find this exhausting since I deal with similar issues irl and am more prone to thinking this season was tone deaf.
tldr: that wow this turned out really negative. Which I didn't really expect considering how much I enjoyed the first few weeks of the season. I enjoyed a lot of the gameplay this season (I really enjoy fun gambit aka Overrides and VoG). But as for replaying the story on my other characters, I don't think I'll bother.

What annoys me a bit in this season's storyline is how there's this One Antagonist (Lakshmi) who suddenly possesses only a single character trait and that trait is "bitch". She's the only one we hear openly rejecting the Eliksni's presence in the City, the only one addressing the issue in sharp, often awful words, the only one openly opposing the Vanguard. Yes, there are other instances of such behaviour throughout the City in the lore, she speaks for a large community, but she's the only one we see in the actual game and it bothers me a bit. She doesn't feel like a *character* anymore, just this token antagonist we all need to hate and dunk on. She's so obviously 'bad'. And it comes to me as such a surprise because she genuinely seemed to me as a reasonable person from what I could tell from her lore, and her sudden switch to A Token Bitch feels so out of place. There was nothing suggesting such strong hatred from her side towards the Eliknsi (besides the classic Cityfolk experience, Twilight Gap and Six Fronts and all but ALSO being a refugee in need of shelter at some point), she always seemed as the calmest out of all the Consensus when it came to Factions-Vanguard relations, and it all just feels so... off. As if the plot desperately ached for an antagonist, but we couldn't risk tarnishing the main cast's reputatuion with accusations of racism (we've already seen what happened with Saladin and Crow the last season, something which I personally see as narratively brave, much needed in the plot and executed quite well) so let's have a random character we've last heard from X years ago suddenly play the big baddie. It feels so cardboard and off and annoying.

Absolutely incredible that this season has managed to create a less likable villain than last season. And yes, I do in fact mean the psions who tried to kill Zavala are a more agreeable sort than Lakshmi

honestly I thought Ixel and her psion squad were really cool. Like, as antagonists, obviously. kinda bummed out that we didn't get to see more of her motivations/she was just another throwaway battlegrounds boss. And that her in-game model is a clone of Inotam's. but still, the little hunter inside of me wants her cloak and she's a Big Lady. so I have a soft spot for her.
In comparison Lakshmi is much more fleshed out this season. Granted that development is her being increasingly unreasonable and space racist each week, but hey. It's still more of a presence than antagonists of seasons past.
Personally I find the narrative beats in sotSplicer to be a little heavy-handed at times. But as I see conversations pop up around this season's events, I've decided maybe that's ok. Even with the big thematic hammer that bungie is smacking people over the head with, we've still got people who think that civilian refugees = their stratocratic government that they're escaping, and that all eliksni are bad forever. so. I don't think the gamers can handle subtly in this case. It was a good call to make Lakshmi really, really unlikable.

Impressions: Fordola
First impression: Oh chick from the trailer obviously set up as a foil to Lyse, important due to her not wearing a helmet and having a unique look. Not my aesthetic, but good design. What is it with the Ala Mhigan refusal to wear pants?
Impression now: She’s actually one of my favorite characters from Stormblood, and loosely follows this arc @prokopetz wrote out to illustrate another “villainous” character’s arc toward redemption (Fordola doesn’t lose her commander unless we’re counting Gaius pre-expac, or Zenos’ tendency to not give a damn about what’s actually going on with the war in favor of his own obsessions, leaving it all to Fordola).
ANYWAY, Fordola has guts, and convictions, and is working past her own messed up upbringing and traumas, and is unashamedly abrasive and straightforward, shown to be a decent commander and good soldier. In some ways she reminds me of Merlwyb, actually, and that’s a good thing. Maybe she’ll end up more like our favorite Admiral in about twenty-odd years.
Favorite moment: The moment in Specula Imperatoris where she gives the order to fire, knowing what it’s going to cost. It’s her moment of “I will do anything” and it’s only after that she really begins to realize what her convictions have done; I know one of the Skulls survives and shows up in M’naago’s Deliveries, but I don’t think he lets Fordola even know he’s alive.
The other moment is the opposite of that order–when she shows up in the throne room to help battle Lakshmi, flat out taking responsibility for the Qalyana’s summoning, and fighting again for Ala Mhigo in a much better way than trying to prove herself to the Imperials.
Idea for a story: Maybe more of her work with the Flames’ Summoner unit and Arenvald. The difficulties she faces as the most hated woman in Ala Mhigo able to sense and remember all the reasons why. How she’s conscripted to fight primals because of the experiments done on her, and wears a collar that can kill her instantly if the assigned thaumaturge guard thinks she’s turned again. How she keeps going despite all of that, through her own sheer stubbornness (and a teeny bit of inspiration from the Warrior of Light and seeing what they’ve been through)
Unpopular opinion: She gets dumped on too often when she has a pretty solid character motivation, backstory, and time to focus on it in the MSQ, a short story, and the SMN lvl 80 quest. She gets a better arc than a lot of characters in Stormblood, and it was a tossup for me for awhile which of the female antagonists was going to die; I figured one of them was. I think it played out well as it could have, and I think she’s a better, more complicated, and interesting character than many give her credit for. She gets more focus and better writing than a lot of the really popular male antagonists, too.
I mean, if she’s not your cup of tea, that’s fine, but saying she has bad writing and gets away scot-free when, for example, Nero (who I also love) is right there and still hasn’t answered for any of the crap he did in ARR as also a part of the Imperial military is something else.
Favorite relationship: With Arenvald. He’s such a big, earnest puppy and a perfect counter to her cynical, snarky demeanor. Also there’re hints in the SMN quest he has a crush which is adorable, and not unexpected when putting a couple late-teen heroes into dangerous situations together. She would likely roll her eyes and say something cutting, though. Maybe eat the boy alive.
Favorite headcanon: She wants to reconnect with her mother, and her surviving friends and their families, but she’s terrified of the rejection, of the “I told you so’s” and the “how dare you?!’s” and so keeps to her cell training and exercising even when she has limited free time to do whatever, under escort. Which is often Arenvald, because he tries so hard to be her friend, at least, because she needs one, even if she hates to admit that’s true.

So, I'm making my way through Stormblood now! It seems like a lot of people treat this expansion like the black sheep of the family, but honestly I am really enjoying it so far. (I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that I'm playing as a Xaela, WRT to the Steppe plotline.) I just met Stark Woad, so I think I'm like, at the halfway point? What was Gisele's reaction to some of the bigger plot points? (Also what's your tag for Hien?) If you get spoilery in your response, I don't mind!
I don’t hate it as much as some people but I seriously have no interest in revisiting any of it in NG+ except the Far Eastern arc and there’s a reason you don’t see me writing fic about it, but for the Lakshmi thing. The Far East was damn near flawless. Even people who hate SB are fairly unanimous that the Azim Steppe in particular is easily the high point of the expansion. Everything goes down hill once you go back to Gyr Abania tbh.
That’s the real problem with SB imo: trying to cram the Ala Mhigo story together with a Far Eastern story just made the whole thing feel disjointed, like they took two different expansions and threw them together in a cheap blender. Lyse’s turn from comic relief side character to spotlight status was poorly executed and in general, despite being a Raubahn stan and a RDM main who started in Ul’dah I legit felt no kind of emotional investment in the Ala Mhigan struggle the way the story made me care about Ishgard (and later, the people on the First). The pacing was questionable and too often it felt like they had a checklist of plot points they had to mark off but they didn’t know how to get from point A to point B, and they didn’t know what to do with certain characters, so they just sort of made things up as they went (the Lakshmi plot is the most egregious example of this to me cuz it’s so out of left field and it really feels a lot like somebody realized “holy shit we forgot to make them fight another Primal this expansion, where can we stick Lakshmi?”). I love Zenos to death but I 100% understand why some find him an underwhelming antagonist, especially in a world that has since given us Emet-Selch. The whole thing really does feel like a first draft
And none of this was especially helped by the fact that SB followed what could have been a top 3 Final Fantasy story if it had been released as a standalone single player game (Heavensward was an incredibly tough act to follow), and in a post-Shadowbringers world SB’s flaws look even worse in hindsight. It really is the weakest link when you put it in the context of being sandwiched by some of the best Final Fantasy and RPG writing period in the last decade.
That said? I would still take Stormblood in a heartbeat over literally anything WoW did since Wrath of the Lich King. If I seem hard on it, it’s only because FFXIV is just that fucking good so my standards are a lot higher.
Anyway Gisele learned to Samurai from Hien and Gosetsu and her job crystal belonged to Lord Kaien. Her opinion of Garlemald is about what you’d expect from a Fereldan of Dalish heritage who used to count the Hero of River Dane as a lover. Gosetsu is like a loud, beloved uncle to her. Hien she fell madly in love with (as did Haurche. He went east with her and the others). He wasn’t the sole reason she became so invested in the Doman struggle; her friendship with Yugiri and the other Doman refugees pretty much ensured it way before she even met Hien. But it helped, admittedly. She really fell in love with the Far East period tbh, to the point she owns property in Shirogane (in game just an apartment, but in my head she has another little cottage there instead).
The only person she despises more than Magnai is Fordola, and she took a great deal of pleasure in beating the unholy shit out of both.
Gisele’s feelings toward Zenos are horrendously complicated. Obviously, she hates what he’s done. But he draws lizard brain shit out of her that she doesn’t understand and also scares the everloving shit out of her. It’s Complicated.
Main thing to keep in mind is that Ysayle and Haurche are still around and are both Scions at this point. Ysayle wasn’t 100% until after Gisele and them came back west though, so she sat out most of the story.

HUMAN CHORIONIC GONADOTROPIN INJECTION:This hormone causes your ovary to release an egg. A synthetic form of it can be injected to help treat anovulation. It’s often taken with clomiphene citrate.
FOLLICLE STIMULATING HORMONE INJECTION:If your body isn’t making enough FSH or if the other treatments for anovulation haven’t worked, your healthcare provider may have you get an injection of synthetic FSH to help your ovary release an egg.
GONADOTROPIN-RELEASING HORMONE AGONISTS AND ANTAGONISTS INJECTIONS:An injection of GnRH agonists and antagonists helps to control the levels of luteinizing hormone (LH) your body secretes, which is the most needed one for ovulation.
