JOHN HICKS TRIO 'I'll GIVE YOU SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY' (1988)
In the late 1980s, the renowned American jazz pianist, composer, and arranger John Hicks formed one of the most influential ensembles consisting out of musicians that had played music at the highest level all their lives and gained their status as both stand-alone artists and important sidemen. Each of them had participated in many of jazz’s great moments and all shared the ability, documented on many albums, to inspire their fellow musicians to even greater heights. The ‘John Hicks Trio’ had several line-up changes over the years that included greats such as Clifford Barbaro (Strata East, Blue Note, Sun Ra Arkestra, Charles Tolliver), Clint Houston (Prestige, Nina Simone, Roy Ayers, Azar Lawrence), Ray Drummond (Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, Lalo Schifrin), Marcus McLaurine (Muse, Verve, Weldon Irvine, Kool & The Gang) and Victor Lewis (Steve Grossman, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus, Cedar Walton, Chet Baker).
On the album we are presenting you today (I’ll Give You Something To Remember Me By from 1988) the trio consists out of some of the biggest and best players in the jazz, funk and soul scenes:
On piano we have the Atlanta based trio’s bandleader JOHN HICKS (1941-2006). He served as a leader on more than 30 albums and played as a sideman on more than 300 other recordings. After being taught piano by his mother, Hicks went on to study at Lincoln University of Missouri, Berklee College of Music, and the Julliard School. After playing with a number of different artists during the early ’60s (including Oliver Nelson and being part of Pharoah Sanders’s first band) he joined Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers in 1964. In the early ’70s he taught jazz history and improvisation at Southern Illinois University before resuming his career as a recording artist. Next to his many solo recordings for labels such as Strata East and Concord, Hicks would collaborate with all the big names in the scene, including Archie Shepp, Mingus and Alvin Queen. In 2014 & 2015, J Dilla paid homage to John Hicks by sampling two of his songs.
On drums we have the legendary IDRIS MUHAMMAD (1939-2014) who to this day is still considered as one of the most influential drummers covering a multitude of genre-transcending styles. Born in New Orleans, he showed early talent as a percussionist and began his professional career while still a teenager, playing on Fats Domino’s ‘Blueberry Hill’. He then toured with Sam Cooke and would later go on to work with Curtis Mayfield. Next to his landmark solo recordings for Prestige Records, Idris would collaborate with iconic musicians and acts from the likes of Manu Dibango, Ahmad Jamal, Melvin Sparks, Charles Earland, Walter Bishop, Ceasar Frazier, Roberta Flack, Gato Barbieri, Nathan Davis, Sonny Rollins, Lou Donaldson, Galt MacDermot, Lonnie Smith…and countless others. Idris Muhammad’s work was sampled by renowned performers such as Drake, Beastie Boys and Fatboy Slim.
On bass we have CURTIS LUNDY (born 1955) who originates from Florida. Lundy is a well-respected bass player (and a master of his instrument), choir director, arranger, composer and producer who was part of performances and recordings of renowned acts and artists such as Pharoah Sanders, Frank Morgan, Cole Porter, Chico Freeman, Khan Jamal… and many others!
On I’ll Give You Something To Remember Me By (recorded at the legendary Dutch Studio 44 in March 1987 and released on Limetree Records in 1988) the listener is treated to eight majestic tracks of the highest caliber (including an excellent Thelonious Monk cover-tune) and features a remarkable outing of advanced musicianship by three jazz-giants in their prime, delivering an inspirational gem of an album.
These recordings sound as successful, young and vibrant as ever! Expect supercharged ragtime Post Bop with striking notes, no-holds-barred musicianship, high swinging solos, screaming choruses and plenty of solid virtuosity to spare. The up tempo none stop Latin beat is complimented by the terrific drum solos of Idris Muhammad and the rhythmic bass stokes of Curtis Lundy. This electrifying set of tracks makes this release a bonafide hit and a must have for any self-respecting jazz fan or collector.
Tidal Waves Music now proudly presents the FIRST ever vinyl reissue of this classic jazz album (originally released in 1988). This reissue comes as a deluxe 180g vinyl edition (strictly limited to 500 copies worldwide) with obi strip…also present are the exclusive pictures shot by legendary Dutch photographer Frans Schellekens (known for his work with artists such as Chet Baker, Alice Coltrane, Freddie Hubbard and Sonny Rollins). Dougie Maclean - Vocals, Acoustic Guitar Music&Lyrics by Dougie Maclean
Who Am I
Music and Lyrics by Dougie MacLean Published by Limetree Arts and Music (MCPS and PRS UK)
Over the mountains and out across the sea On weathered wings he soars into the edges of the breeze Over the water and out across the fields With eagle eye he watches he's seeing what our hearts can never see He speaks to me
CHORUS From up here I've seen the broken truth I have heard that old eternal lie From way up here I've seen the wasted youth From up here I've heard the old man cry Saying who am I
Through the hazels and along the Druthy Burn On feathered feet she's silent as to her young ones she returns Over the moon and up the Ben A Caly hill On her lookout rock she watches she's seeing what our hearts can never see And she speaks to me
CHORUS
Life touches nothing, life teaches what it can It can hold us all to ransom, the woman and the man Over the mountains and out across the trees On weathered wings he soars into the silence on the edges of the breeze And he speaks to me

Welcome to Hollier’s Gymnasium
Tumblr media
TED HOLLIER WAS A CELEBRATED BOXING INSTRUCTOR OF THE LATE VICTORIAN ERA WHO WAS FAMED IN SOUTH-EAST LONDON.
But little is known about the “genial and popular” man, who would regularly hold bouts at his former home on Peckham’s Rosemary Road
WORDS: DEREK KINRADE
Information about Edward “Ted” Hollier (1862- 1915) is limited. The 1871 census had him living at 249 Albany Road, Camberwell, with his father Emmanuel, aged 39, a grocer from Oxford; mother Emma, aged 33, from Chelsea; grandmother Jane Taylor, aged 69, from Kingston; and sister Isabella, aged seven.
By 1881 the family were living at 16 Tilson Road, Camberwell, but Ted had moved on. He married Emma Caroline Bowles in 1885, and we next pick them up in the 1891 census living at 59 Rosemary Road in Peckham. By this time Ted was working as a warehouseman and had two children: Ethel, aged seven, and Gertrude, aged three.
By 1901, his parents were also living on Rosemary Road, at number 5, his father on parochial relief. Ted, still at number 59, is recorded as a “skin dresser and teacher of boxing”. Which brings me to the point; for it was his association with the world of pugilism that made his name.
Ted’s was a controversial career at the time. Stan Shipley, writing in the Journal of Socialist Historians tells us: “Prizefighting, with bare knuckles or skintight gloves, had long been illegal by the 1880s,” adding: “Indeed in this transitional decade the police often raided professional boxing shows to test their legality in the courts.”
We can only speculate as to the possibility that Ted’s initiation to the sport was illegal and therefore went unreported, but it would account for the fact that his name first appeared in Sporting Life only in August 1888, by which time he was an instructor at the Eagle Boxing Club, Trafalgar Road, of which the proprietor was “Mrs Bowles”, perhaps his mother-in-law.
This was the precursor of more than 700 reports in which Ted’s name appeared in numerous guises. He was frequently referred to as an instructor, occasionally as a contestant (sometimes in exhibitions), as a promoter (as early as September 1888), a judge, master of ceremonies, manager and second. Many of the suggested bouts were advertised conditionally, on the possibility that “Ted Hollier will offer a prize”.
The fights took place at “small halls”, mostly a network of boxing clubs, pubs and saloons that were dotted across Peckham, Camberwell, Bermondsey, Walworth and other parts of south-east London; in low-cost, working-class settings, prudently regulated.
A September 1888 issue of Sporting Life specifically advertised a fight “under Queensbury rules” for a silver cup at the General Moore – formerly the Corunna Music Hall, Stewards’ Lane, Battersea Park Road.
By 1892, Ted was referred to as “Professor” and was very much a local favourite. But before that, in April 1891, the Sporting Life made the first mention of a special venue: “On Saturday evening, despite the strong counter-attractions of Her Majesty’s, the Oval, and elsewhere, Hollier’s Gymnasium was literally packed to witness one of the best shows... ever seen.”
It was the first night of many, at a location – 59 Rosemary Road – that proved to be “increasingly popular and well managed”.
Which part of Ted’s home accommodated a boxing ring, with room for an enthusiastic audience to boot, is uncertain. Some say it was in the back garden.
The Daily Herald, much later, remembering the gymnasium’s demise, put it in an unlikely “back kitchen”. Stan Shipley, in the article previously mentioned, relates that Ted charged sixpence and a shilling for admission to his shows, and sets out in some detail the costs and prize money typically involved.
The enterprise was clearly not hugely profitable, a finding that shouts that more than money was at stake in boxing at this grassroots level, indeed perhaps at any level: the vanity of prestige, the esteem of being seen as a conquering hero.
Hollier’s Gymnasium prospered into the 20th century. The Sporting Life in 1902 announced: “The company on Saturday night [April 26] at this boxing saloon was again a numerous one.”
There followed details of the bouts, besides which there had been “some exhibition boxing of an unusual character... most of the lads being pupils of its professor”, who “controlled the arrangements in hand”.
But, thereafter, suddenly and mysteriously, Ted’s name disappeared from the sporting media. The 1911 census had him living at 10 Limetree Terrace on Pitt Street in Peckham. He died, in obscurity, in 1915, aged only 52. Does anyone know more?
In writing this short article, I have, as so often, had the considerable benefit of Deborah Elliott’s painstaking research. We have both also heavily relied, for details of press coverage, on the website genesreunited.co.uk. Pictured above: Ted Hollier refereeing a bout.

Ralph's giving Too Much For You by Sam Jefferson a spin on the Radio KC Indie Show on March 5th so we thought it'd be nice to run a feature too. Raised on a steady diet of Blind Lemon Jefferson (probably no relation), Bert Jansch, and Woody Guthrie records, traditional Blues and Folk music is at the heart of his musical soul.  In July 2015, Sam Jefferson recorded and independently released his first solo album, Rhythm’s Tide, comprised of seven original compositions and three arrangements.
Inspired by contemporary artists such as Martin Simpson, whom he studied with in late 2015, Sam Jefferson is not one to arbitrarily separate genres.  His compositions and arrangements are animated by diverse styles. The Dirty Five , a self-penned ballad inspired by a photograph Sam’s great-grandfather, Jim Marshall, sent back during the First World War, which would typically be considered more of a Folk composition, contains melodies inspired by the Blues.
Sam Jefferson explained:
“I wrote those sections in particular to convey the larrikin sense of adventure Jim and his mates shared; that in the desperation of trench warfare, these five Barnsley lads were able to keep each other’s spirits up with their jokes and jaunty songs right until the end”.
The Dirty Five has since been aired on BBC Radio Sheffield along with an interview Sam gave, and has been featured in an article by The Royal British Legion. Sam is currently working on an album of songs inspired by his family history as part of the coal-mining community in Barnsley.
