I posted on instagram shouting out Amor Towles for becoming one of my new favorite authors and I tagged him and he swiped up and left an emoji response and then I sent him an incredibly rambly question about what drives him to write about Russian culture/heritage/history bc he did it in both books of his I’ve read so far and he didn’t even open my message and now I feel a little stupid

ok so considering im decently sure a good chunk of the f1 drivers dont actually like driving road cars on roads (fair) i propose a new grand prix to determine the real Best Driver.
behold. the rush hour grand prix.
1 lap. at rush hour on a friday night. all the usual normal commuters and terrible drivers are still on the road along with all the drivers. in the rain. everyone drives a car of their choice. they have to count out all their tolls using change, no one gets ez pass. and you get disqualified if you veer from the instructions (no wrong turns!)
and where does this take place?
thats right.
new jersey. (and new york city) (but mostly new jersey)
here is the proposed track:
Tumblr media
we start and end on route 22 right outside the staples. a terrible awful road that would cause harm to any driver, especially european ones. route 22 is so terrible because there is a long stretch that has a center median with shops in it, so theres shops on the right the left and in the center with u turns every 500 feet.
they go east on 22 towards us route 1 and 9 and, thats right, newark liberty international airport. here they have to do a loop around all of the departure terminals before exiting and heading towards jersey city on route 78.
they take route 78 through the holland tunnel, which is a hilarious tunnel to go through as you can literally blink and miss the signs because theyre so small.
upon arriving in new york city they will head towards the canal street station, doing an awful little loopy loop to take hudson street to 8th avenue. new york will prove a challenge for many of them because every other street and avenue there is pretty much a one way in the opposite way.
theyre going to turn right on 23rd street and take it three blocks towards the flatiron building on fifth avenue before doing another turn around and heading back up sixth avenue
here theyre going to turn left on 40th street, then right on 7th avenue then immediately right again on 41st street and then back to 6th avenue which they'll take all the way to the bottom of central park. here they'll turn left onto 59th street then go around columbus circle, exiting on broadway and then going right onto 57th street, which they'll then take down to 11th avenue, then after. few blocks cut over to the west side highway (12 avenue) and then they'll get off at 40th street and enter, you guessed it, the lincoln tunnel.
they'll exit the lincoln and get onto route 3 which they'll take down to route 120 and then they'll do a single doughnut in the parking lot at the american dream mall (a terrible place) before getting onto, you guessed it! 95!! they'll take 95 (devil highway) to 78 to the garden state parkway before getting back on route 22, doing a quick hairpin turn at one the first u turn and then end up straight back where they started. outside the staples.
i think maybe 3 people would finish the whole thing. logan sargeant, being the only american, would come in first. fernando alonso takes second and valtteri bottas takes third.

The Modernaire Motel closed in 2023. A zoning change of the area led to the proposal of a convenience store and gas station. Today, the driveways are closed off with orange roadblocks and no trespassing signs litter the vacant property. It will likely be replaced by a development project called the Mount Zion Commons, which will include 72,000 square feet of buildings.
The main brick office building dates back to the 1940s and is a unique example of streamline moderne architecture. While the Modernaire Motel has been on a list of the most historically significant structures in Springettsbury Township since 2001, it does not appear that that alone has the power to save it. The motel is located in York, Pennsylvania on the famous Lincoln Highway and has been at risk of demolition since 2015, per the York Daily Record.

chapter seven: perseus & andromeda – part one
(masterlist) (part 1) (part 2) (part 3) (part 4) (part 5) (part 6)
hello beautiful people <3 here is chapter seven !!
synopsis: After deciding to let Abby live, Ellie has returned to Jackson. But given everything she's lost, it no longer feels like home. She's sad, she's confused, and above all else, she is so, so very lonely. So when a group of strangers shows up and offers her a second chance, she might just take them up on that. Ellie must decide between staying in Jackson – and living with the ghosts of her past – or leaving in search of new meaning. Whatever she decides, her choice will have far-reaching consequences – not just for herself, or for Jackson, but for all of humanity.
Or,
Ellie saves the world, maybe?
(ellie williams x reader, post-tlou2, useless lesbians, slow burn, cross country road trip, lots of references to greek mythology, etc.)
Andromeda: Princess of Greek myth, famous for her legendary beauty. Chained to a rock as sacrifice to the sea monster Cetus.
[Lucy]
Besides the occasional infected, the trip had been relatively quiet. But, as with all things in life, everything is quiet – until it isn’t.
As she watched the raindrops pelt the windshield, Lucy recalled lectures from the meteorology unit in science class. Her teacher’s voice rang in her head: The climate and geography of the midwest make it prone to thunderstorms, intense precipitation, and tornadoes.
Indeed, it did. Thick, heavy drops of water littered the front window faster than the windshield wipers could get rid of them. Bright, forked bolts of lightning split the  clouds and illuminated the otherwise darkened sky. Claps of thunder shook the inside of the truck so loud that Lucy could feel them reverberate in her teeth.
The truck crept its way down the highway, unable to go much faster than a crawl given the thick wall of water limiting visibility. To their left, periodic bolts of lightning backlit the skyline of a nearby city. Through the haze, Lucy could just barely make out the old green signs of the highway. Lincoln, ¼ Mile, they said.
“We’ll pull off and find shelter once we get past the city,” Jacobs yelled over the storm as he drove.
“Why not one of these buildings?” Lucy asked, gesturing down the off-ramp.
“We don’t know what’s down there. Should only be a few minutes. It’ll be safer further away,” Jacobs replied.
As if on cue, a loud pop! echoed from below the truck. It wasn’t thunder.
“Shit – ” Jacobs muttered as he tried to regain control over the swerving vehicle, until it gradually came to a halt. He groaned, then sighed.
“There’s a spare in the back,” he announced as he and Alvaro prepared to get out. “Stay put, this shouldn’t take long.”
They disappeared from view as soon as their doors were shut. Inside, the heavy rain continued to beat rhythmically on the roof.
Lucy sighed and sunk lower in her seat. “Great timing, huh?” she said, looking over at Ellie. Ellie didn’t reply, instead wringing her hands as she nervously watched outside. It was obvious she was on edge.
Lucy took note and said, “Hey, it’s just a flat tire. They know what they’re doing. It’s gonna be fine.”
Keeping her gaze out the window, Ellie heaved a deep sigh and said, “I know, I know, I just… I have a bad feeling about this.”
“What do you mean?” Lucy asked.
“Well, the cities can be really dangerous. There are some really bad groups out there, and sometimes they’ll come up with these schemes…” she trailed off, clearly remembering something unpleasant. She shook her head. “But yeah, no, I’m sure you’re right.” She turned to Lucy and forced a small smile. Lucy returned the gesture.
Then, the doors flung open, gloved hands reached inside, and all three passengers were ripped out of the truck.
The first thing she felt was the rain – so heavy and so cold. She had to squint to keep the water from dripping into her eyes. Within a matter of seconds, her hair and clothes were completely soaked through, chilling her to the bone.
She lost her footing as she was pulled from the truck, leaving her scrambling on all fours. Strong hands clenched around her wrists from behind, and she desperately tried to gain purchase on the ground as they dragged her away from the vehicle. When her captor came to a stop, Lucy was forced to her knees as the sharp, cold blade of a knife pressed against her throat. The blade was pressed so tightly to her skin that any sudden movement was sure to draw blood.
Out of the corner of her eye, Lucy could see her father in the same position as a second captor held a knife to his throat. The gloved hand holding the knife was attached to a tall figure wearing a dark, hooded cloak that obscured the rest of their body.
Through the watery haze in front of her, she could just make out Alvaro and Jacobs wrestling with two more hooded figures near the back of the truck. Lucy frantically looked around for their fifth member, but Ellie had been pulled to the other side of the vehicle and was nowhere to be seen.
“Ellie!” Lucy yelled, desperate to be heard over the downpour. She thought she heard a voice yell from beyond the truck, but it was impossible to be sure over the storm.
“Shut up,” a gruff voice from behind her said as the blade pressed deeper into her neck.
Without further outburst, Lucy watched Alvaro and Jacobs as they tussled with their opponents. The strangers were quick and nimble, deftly avoiding the officers’ advances. But the officers were built like oxen, so when they finally landed a punch the hooded figures crumpled to the ground in a heap of fabric.
With their opponents knocked out, the officers stopped to gauge their surroundings. Over here! Help! Lucy wanted to scream, but the knife at her throat kept her quiet. She had no way of knowing what had happened to Ellie, but she thought at least one of the officers would come to her and her father’s aid. She was instantly relieved when they looked in her direction. Yes, yes, we’re over here! She could have sworn she even locked eyes with one of them.
Needless to say, her stomach dropped when both officers disappeared behind the other side of the truck. She kneeled tensely as the cold rain poured down her back, listening for any sign of life.
Next to her, the figure holding her father shifted their weight. “Hey, what’s going on over there?” they yelled. No response.
“Hey, man,” they said to the person holding Lucy. “We should get out of here while we still can.”
“We can’t just leave them out here!” Lucy’s captor replied.
“C’mon, they could be dead already for all we know! You saw what those guys did to the others.”
Her captor considered for a moment. “Fine, let’s go,” they said, as they removed the knife from Lucy’s neck. “Blessed be the light.”
Lucy didn’t have time to question the statement before the hilt of the knife collided with her temple and everything went black.
------------------------------
Lucy was still in her wet clothes when she woke, and immediately she started shivering. Wrists shackled above her, she sat leaning against the cold, hard wall of what looked like an old conference room. She brought her knees to her chest in a futile attempt to hold onto whatever warmth she could.
The blow from the knife left a throbbing pain in her head and blurred her vision. She had to squint in the harsh fluorescent light. Blearily, she watched as someone wearing a dark hooded cloak entered from the hallway carrying a tray. The figure approached and knelt in front of her, offering a glass of water.
Lucy turned her head in refusal, too weak to say anything more than “Nnn…”
“Please, it will help with the pain,” a gentle girl’s voice emanated from under the hood. “I promise.”
Lucy tried to make out the details of the girl’s face. The lights were too harsh and the hood’s shadow too dark, but Lucy could tell the girl was quite young – maybe 14, if that. She looked sincere, and Lucy reluctantly sipped from the glass as the girl held it to her lips. Lucy accepted apple slices too, glad to have something in her stomach.
The girl looked behind her as if to check if anyone was there. In a hushed voice, she said, “When he comes in, don’t fight him. He’s nicer if he thinks you like him.” Three sharp knocks came from the door, signaling her time was up as she turned to go. “The sedative should help with the pain, too,” she whispered as she hurried away.
Lucy realized what the girl meant just as her eyelids grew heavy and she was pulled back into unconsciousness.
------------------------------
As the drugs wore off, Lucy groggily opened her eyes to find a man seated in a chair in front of her. Unlike the others, this man wore a crisp, pristine suit and tie, face clearly visible. He was clean shaven, and his long, gray hair was carefully styled so as to leave no stray hair out of place. When he smiled at her, she noticed his teeth were a harsh, abnormal white.
“Hello, darling. Welcome back.” He flashed that awful smile at her again. She was still having trouble forming words, so he kept talking. “My men tell me they saved you on the highway out there. Nasty weather, huh? Lucky we were there to help.”
Lucy furrowed her brows, trying to make sense of what he was saying. She knew she was probably nursing a concussion, and forming coherent thoughts proved to be an arduous task. “That’s… that’s not… what happened…” she managed.
“Mmm… must have been a nasty tumble you took,” he said, cocking his head. “Head injuries are no joke, you know.”
“I didn’t… f-fall…” she stammered as she glared at him.
“Ah, my sweet. Perhaps your memory will come back in time.” He raised his eyebrows and made a gesture of surprise with his hands. “Oh! How silly of me, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Keane. I run things here in the city. I’m looking forward to showing you around, once you’ve healed a bit.” He leaned forward and used his hand to caress her knee. Lucy tried to pull away, but there was only so far she could go with her back against the wall. “I think you’ll be very useful here.” He flashed another smile, and being almost face to face with it made her stomach turn. She spat in his face.
Immediately, his demeanor changed. The smile disappeared, his eyebrows lowered, and a cold, cruel look crept into his eyes. He calmly wiped the spit off of his face and leaned back.
“I see you’re not quite healed enough yet. Maybe next time I see you, you’ll remember how lucky you are to be here. Blessed be the light, sister.” He stood up and walked out of the room without saying another word. As he left, a large hooded figure entered, gloved hands wielding a thick baton. Lucy cowered against the wall as the figure swiftly crossed the room, coming directly for her. With one deft strike to the head, everything went black.
------------------------------
“Lucy? Lucy, hey, are you there?” a voice called, sounding far away. Hands gripped her shoulders and shook her back into semi-consciousness. In her half-aware state, Lucy saw the dark hood on the figure in front of her and struggled weakly to get away.
“N-no… get off of m-me…” she mumbled as she curled herself as far away from the figure as she could in her delirious state.
“Hey, hey, look at me.” The voice was soft. The figure removed their hood and gripped her face. Strong, calloused hands gently turned her face so Lucy was forced to look at the person in front of her. As Lucy’s vision focused, she found herself looking into a familiar pair of green eyes.
“Hey, it’s me. It’s okay. You’re okay.” Ellie talked as she unlocked the shackles above Lucy’s head. “I’m gonna get you out of here. Can you walk?” Lucy nodded weakly, but as Ellie helped her stand up, she almost collapsed.
“Woah, woah, okay. That’s okay. Just hold on, alright?” Ellie wrapped one arm around Lucy’s back and the other under her knees as she picked her up. With whatever strength she could muster, Lucy wrapped her arms tightly around Ellie’s neck. She tucked her face into Ellie’s chest to block out the harsh light that made her head throb.
Lucy was conscious enough to keep herself upright, but otherwise everything passed in a blur. She registered doors opening, strange voices, the sensation of being set down and picked back up again. Occasionally, Ellie would mumble something like, “Hey, stay with me, okay?” or, “Almost out, just a little further.”
Eventually, everything faded to quiet. Lucy felt herself being laid on the ground, head propped up on something soft and solid. She managed to open her eyes, and was met not with the harsh fluorescence of before, but with soft morning light peeking through a leafy canopy. Above her, she watched as Ellie smiled softly down at her. Lucy’s head was in Ellie’s lap, and Ellie gently brushed stringy pieces of hair out of her face.
“Hey, you’re okay. I’ve got you,” Ellie said. “We’re safe, for now. You can rest if you need to.”
Grateful for the invitation, Lucy didn’t fight it this time as she slipped back into unconsciousness.

one of the funniest parts about learning to drive in Houston and then moving to Boston is having to manually adjust my barometer for when it's worth it to jockey for position between red lights
in Houston, the surface roads are mostly straight and 7 lanes wide and have a stop light every block or two. you and everyone else in your wave of traffic are at the mercy of the stoplight cycles in the same way the ocean is at the mercy of the tide. muscling your way to the front of the pack is unnecessary and rude - the sign of an egotistical child thinking that shaving five seconds off their commute is worth almost forcing you out of your lane and PIT maneuvering themselves. if you get honked at, it's because you bruised someone's ego. when someone tells you a story about how they were going a "normal speed on the highway" and how everyone passing them is going "so much faster", you can both laugh because they're referring to Corollas with paper dealership plates weaving in and out of traffic at 130mph.
in Boston, the surface roads are as straight as Sir Elton John, 1.5 lanes wide, and have stoplights at intervals ranging from two miles apart down to approximately four cubits with no pattern whatsoever. you and everyone else in your wave of traffic are less at the mercy of these light cycles and more at the mercy of the 85-year-old Crypt Keeper who got her license during the Clinton administration and is driving her Lincoln Towncar along the lane divider at a blistering 7mph pace as the drivers of the mile of cars backing up behind her all simultaneously attempt to kill her with their minds. muscling your way to the front of the pack isn't just acceptable, it's necessary, and not doing it fast enough is actually rude to the people behind you. if you get honked at, it is more likely than not that you have done something objectively wrong and some soul-searching is in order. when someone tells you a story about how they were going a "normal speed on the highway" and how everyone passing them is going "so much faster", you nervously laugh and mentally mark them down as a bad driver who cannot be trusted, because they are referring to driving 60mph in the passing lane during rush hour and in any sane society would have been put to death years ago.
tl;dr "haha was it really worth all that jockeying just to get to the next red light faster?" unironically yes depending on context, Person Who Has Never Sat At The Same Light For Three Cycles While MeeMaw Tries To Find Her Gas Pedal

New Jersey sued the U.S. Department of Transportation for its role approving New York’s planned congestion toll, arguing the federal government should conduct a fuller environmental-impact study of what would be the nation’s first congestion pricing system.
Gov. Phil Murphy announced the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Newark, Friday morning. The suit, which also lists the Federal Highway Administration and two officials at that division of DOT as defendants, could upend plans by New York officials to raise money for the subway system by charging congestion tolls on people who drive into the busiest parts of Manhattan.
“We believe the feds short-circuited the normal review process,” the Democratic governor said in an interview on Good Day New York.
The Federal Highway Administration, or FHWA, doesn’t comment on pending litigation, a spokeswoman said. New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, which will oversee congestion pricing, didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. MTA officials have previously said they conducted an extensive environmental analysis.
The FHWA signed off on the MTA’s review in late June, and the MTA has begun setting up camera systems needed to charge the tolls. The authority hopes to start charging congestion tolls by the spring of 2024 on vehicles that enter Manhattan south of 60th Street.
Murphy argued that the new tolls will unfairly target New Jersey drivers, who already pay a $17 toll to use the Lincoln or Holland tunnels into Manhattan. Around 111,000 people drove into Manhattan’s business district from New Jersey on an average fall weekday in 2019, according to the New York Metropolitan Transportation Council, a planning group.
The MTA this week convened a board that will set toll rates and consider exemptions—including a possible credit for drivers who must already pay tolls to use tunnels.
The congestion charge could be as high as $23 during rush hour, according to the MTA’s environmental review. Drivers just using highways along the Hudson and East rivers can avoid the fee, and low-income residents of the congestion zone would receive an offsetting tax rebate.
The toll must raise enough money to cover operating costs as well as bonds to finance $15 billion of mass-transit improvements for the MTA. New York approved the congestion pricing in 2019 as part of a larger budget bill in Albany.
In addition to raising funds, leaders of the MTA estimated that the new tolls would reduce traffic by up to 20%, thereby improving air quality and reducing trip times. Similar systems are in place in London, Stockholm and Singapore.

The Niagara was the epitome of powerful dual-purpose NYC steam, and could stand its ground on the ledger sheet with the invading internal combustion power. Nonetheless, 6014 was scrapped a year or so after this scene, relegated to the Cleveland-Indy mail/express train #473 in this view, fouling the PRR main and protected by the flagman on the left in the roadway. Note the highway sign for US 30 seen above his shanty, now known as the "Lincoln Highway", a local road, as "bypass" US 30 has been moved outside city limits since. The Niagara had both traditional steam whistle and air horn. Crestline, OH May 29, 1954

Highway 50 (No. 1)
U.S. Route 50 (US 50) is a transcontinental highway in the United States, stretching from West Sacramento, California, in the west to Ocean City, Maryland, on the east coast. The Nevada portion crosses the center of the state and was named "The Loneliest Road in America" by Life magazine in July 1986. The name was intended as a pejorative, but Nevada officials seized it as a marketing slogan. The name originates from large desolate areas traversed by the route, with few or no signs of civilization. The highway crosses several large desert valleys separated by numerous mountain ranges towering over the valley floors, in what is known as the Basin and Range province of the Great Basin.
US 50 has a diverse route through the state, traversing the resort communities of Lake Tahoe, the state capital in Carson City, historical sites such as Fort Churchill State Historic Park, petroglyphs, alpine forests, desert valleys, ghost towns, and Great Basin National Park.
The route was constructed over a historic corridor, initially used for the Pony Express and Central Overland Route and later for the Lincoln Highway. Before the formation of the U.S. Highway System, most of US 50 in Nevada was designated State Route 2. The routing east of Ely has changed significantly from the original plans. The route change resulted from a rivalry between Nevada and Utah over which transcontinental route was better to serve California-bound traffic, the Lincoln Highway or the Victory Highway.

Day 22: Sunday January 22, 2023 - “Oregon Coast”
I felt like a ghost. Haunting my younger self, re-running these roads from Ecola State Park on down to Newport, through Tillamook and Corvallis and back up to PDX.   Out here where I spent a Christmas Eve before I knew even what I was doing, with a picnic basket and an idea and a bundle of firewood on the sands outside Netarts with ghosts of Christmas Past and Present dancing with me in the blowing sand - very green, then, and really up to something but not ever really sure,  but now with a grey beard and experience to know that the road does always provide, and now, as I drove out hoping to catch a sunset that would move me in some important way, out over that powerful ocean where the clouds always break for me, remembering that familiar feeling of hoping that was true again, and then there it was finally - the Pacific, the ocean that I dreamed into on so many lonely nights and empowered days, thinking about that old Primo Levi quote about feeling strong...  this is a powerful place, a place that I’ll always be drawn to.   I wound down the road, recognizing things and remembering things from a place I hadn’t seen in almost 13 years, and other places like Newport that I came back to over and over, as a waypoint on my Aesthetic Voyage.  I wondered, as I drove by, if Luke would remember guiding me to that Shell Station, the one coming up right before the road takes a 90 degree right, back before I had a smart phone of my own.  “Hey are you by a computer?”  Feels like a different life ago, and it was, but the timeless place is unmoved, unchanged.  The sea is still there, with its constant flow; harsh blows, what a gift.  So familiar and Close to the heart, Running running, born to run, like Christmas Night in Lincoln City, before the photo blog even existed, and how The Boss sings me through every time - “you signing that to me? - One Night Only!”  A runaway American Dream and Wild Oats.   Id like to think the place still knows me well too; that I havent been gone too long, the different chapters, the different lovers, the different times I came here looking for something - that restless cowboy up and down the 101- the path of paradise for me forever and always.  An Important Place that always knew the winding path I was on, and how I’d get there, and now I come back “home” like Christopher Robin to remember with delicate nostalgia and pride for how it was, and even what wasn’t -  Like that sad lovers resort at Depoe Bay, the first time I really remember my heart being broke - how I screamed out at the Gratiot Airport into the night over that place right there, as I rolled by it again, dark as it should be;  Stories untold, never written, right there - important more for maybe what didn’t happen here 17 years ago so it could be just mine, how here at this state park I pull into, I sat and burned divorce papers in the campfire, that was a sad night, and it was only mine, endings here too; and how just miles down the road there is a girl with a tattoo marking a path I chose not to go down as I verbed my way back East instead, and how the gift of that story came out of this mist.  The mist, thats always sent me home with many gifts, and made me work for most of them, which this wildman always appreciated.  So many things to tell out along these mile markers, of Chili Bombs, and running for mayor, and beer boiled clams, and sleeping on the sand, and me haunting them all in my rental, enjoying the green views of a pacific northwest forest highway, as if I was driving with my own self there in the backseat, in the rearview mirror the only difference between us is the miles  “The difference between love and happiness is you.” And maybe there is a wink from the universe and a nudge that I am figuring it out, as I cycle back through the places and the stories and the people of that time and space - that the adventure needs to come back, and the fire, and the blurry eyed idealism that the world worked, now with age and wisdom to truly enjoy how the story unfolds, where I used words like soulful, and supplication, and I didnt feel so much pressure and I laughed, and didn’t worry so much about the hurts, though itd be easy to.  “Welcome back old friend.”  I see you, I recognize you.  This is an important place.  A place that knows me.  And the treasure I left here, and the treasure I took away.  A place that is mine, again.
Song: Bruce Springsteen - Born To Run

That sign is in Delaware! On the highway sign behind it, you can see that it’s advertising an exit to Milford and Lincoln via Rt. 30, which is located approximately here: 38.893727, -75.391819. I’d be fascinated to know if other states have similar silly blinking signs tho! It’s super wild to have a joke from my state blow up like this!
I saw your tags about the "camp in the parks not the left lane" and those were all over Ohio for so long!
