Cryptids & Creatures of Drawtober Day 31 — The Beast of Bray Road

In the area surrounding a lonely country road called Bray Road in Elkhorn, Wisconsin there have been sightings of a terrifying creature.

This beast is described as huge and wolf-like in appearance but capable of walking on two legs. Sightings go back for nearly a century but began to become more numerous beginning in the 1980s, during which time several witnesses claimed the creature made long scratch marks on their vehicles. One woman reported accidentally hitting something while driving one night and when she got out to investigate was quickly chased back into her car by the creature.

In the early 1990s, newspaper reporter Linda S. Godfrey was assigned the story and while she was initially a skeptic, after interviewing numerous witnesses she would go on to write several books about the Beast of Bray Road and is credited with helping it become such a well-known legend today.

I have a new cryptid pin Kickstarter for cryptid and folklore nesting dolls! Just going over some of the creatures in the sets. The first set that unlocks will be these guys. The yeti, a legendary creature talked of in folklore around the Himilayas. Talked of as an ape-like creature. Original sightings purported to a dark-haired creature or an orangutan like animal, often thought to be misidentified bears. The yeti is commonly depicted with white hair nowadays, which historically seems to have started with a Bugs Bunny cartoon from 1961.

The Beast of Bray road is a werewolf like creature reportedly around a stretch of country road in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. First written about in 1991 by Linda Godfrey after reports of a bipedal animal came in. It wasn’t until after this that supposed older sightings were reported in. People claim to see the creature in the area occasionally as well as the similar Michigan dog man.

The fur-bearing trout is a fearsome critter, which are tall tales of lumberjack folklore in North America. Its roots may come from a similar Icelandic creature. The earliest written about it in the US comes from James Herbert Hickens who tells of it living in iceberg lakes in Glacier National park and that it “explodes upon being taken from the water” into different sections of fur, flesh, and meat “for refrigerator purposes, or eating.” Originally inspiration may have come from fish with cotton mold. My quick reading of the Flash #797 plus my thoughts and reactions Part 2 MAJOR SPOILERS!!!

Damian exclaims that they need to get the Eternity Mind. Not to worry, Irey's got that handled!

Hmm, back with the old Impulse costume Irey? Anyway, with the Eternity Mind in hand, the gang make their escape!

Back again with our worried babysitter, Mr. Terrific has fortunately been able to locate the twins energy signature and open a portal to their location. Ace is given a button to open a portal back home to press once he finds the twins and brings them back in one piece (He better or Linda is not going to be happy) Unfortunately for him, he is met with the unfriendly company of our villians.

Our gang now find themselves in the "Forever Corridor", lucky for Jai, Irey, and Maxine, they had their costumes with them. Superboy recommends that they take a break but Robin interjects that they should try to contact their fathers or more qualified heroes instead. Irey does not take this comment well and exclaims that she was hoping that this shorter Robin would be a lot nicer than the one in their universe. (She thinks they're from another universe? Hmmm, then again, our Robin has had a costume change when she first met him 🤷 No time to read to much into this) Irey then asks Superboy how he puts up with Robin.

As Superboy runs after Robin, the twins and Maxine agree that as the superkids, they have to work together.

Back again with Kid Flash, he is overwhelmed and taken down by our villians. They decide to use him to bait our gang.

Hey! Remember Adventures of the Super Sons?

(The superkids team? Yes please! Make this happen DC!)

Okay okay, I'll stop, back to the story. Our villians announce to our gang that they have Kid Flash and they must give them the Eternity Mind or else.

(Oh, I so love these kiddos 🤭)

Our gang comes to exchange the Eternity Mind, as long as they let Kid Flash go. When they do, our villian gloats that our gang couldn't be able to use the Eternity Mind, because it has a key word that only he knows, but our super kids have a trick up their sleeves.

As soon as Knives activates the Eternity Mind, our gang simultaneously begin to wish for animals from all over, distracting our villians by the sudden chaos. With Kid Flash free, he and the gang take down the villians with ease. As Kid Flash takes down Knives, the villian drops the Eternity Mind. Robin grabs the large marble, wishing the villians to be put into the nearest prison from wherever they're from, and our villians disappear.

Kid Flash thanks our twins for saving him but he presses Mr. Terrific's button and says they should head home before their mother knows their gone. So our gang decides to say their goodbyes.

(I honestly want these kids interacting more, there is so much potential)

As our Super Sons are left alone with the Eternity Mind, Robin wishes to return to wherever they came from but Superboy realizes that they have no way to take the Eternity Mind with them but they disappear. In a sudden twist, we see that our Eternity Mind is found by...Glorious Godfrey?!

Final thoughts, is there a possible blossoming romance between our Jon and Irey? Interesting (I feel neutral about it) "I had a great childhood" 😭😭😭 Is it me? Or is DC just continually trying to gut punch us everytime young Jon appears? Just me? Moving on, this comic has left me wondering on how much do the twins know about Jon and Damian? Why didn't Ace and Damian recognize each other? Are the Super Sons now in a seperate timeline from canon? So does that mean Robin's line "I don't do teams" means he didn't join the Teen Titans? Like I said, I don't want to get carried away. I really enjoyed this comic, I am so happy I got see our boys again! What are your thoughts?

I have a half-baked, somewhat stoner-esque (but rational) thought about the UFOs currently being discussed in congress, and shifters

That the existence of these UFOs (specifically, the ones that seem to be defying the laws of physics) might lend support to shifting, specifically shifters that claim to change mass or shift through "magical" means.

I personally believe that the UFOs are acting within the laws of physics, but if they're not, that implies that there's either other physical laws that we don't know about, or that in some cases they can be broken or defied. If that is true, then there is a chance that some organism or entity somewhere would have taken advantage of this. (Animals do this all the time to an extent - birds fly because other animals can't take advantage of physics and aerodynamics like they can, electric eels's bodies take advantage of the interactions of water and electrons to zap fish, etc.)

I don't think this applies as much to physical shifters, but it might apply to spiritual shifters. By "spiritual shifters" I'm talking about shifters that physically shift spiritually, or through metaphysical means. Like, faoladh, benadanti, some berserkers, etc, the ones who suddenly become physical animals in a projected or pseudophysical way. In the book Monsters Among Us, Linda Godfrey went over an account of a woman who randomly turned into a monster in church (The Church Lady Monster), and according to observers she just was suddenly a physical monster in front of them. She did look pale and sickly before she turned, as if she might have been holding it back but when she turned, she was just suddenly a huge monster, no transformation sequence or anything. (You can compare that with the shifter talked about earlier in the book, who DID go through a physical change and became a wolf right before his victim's eyes.) There's no physical way to explain what this woman went through, unless maybe the laws of physics aren't as set as stone as we'd like to think?

Obviously the UFOs aren't direct proof of shifters, but I think if they are breaking the laws of physics or bending them in some way, it would stand to reason that other organisms or entities (for some reason or another) have taken advantage of this. I don't know how it would take place, but it would seem to take place, in some instances.

This cryptid is found in Wisconsin!! (Oooh! Home state!) The first sighting dates back all the way to 1936 outside of Elkhorn. Through the 1980-90s it found it’s way traveling through the counties of Racine, Walworth, and Jefferson. To compare, our friend from Bray Road is narratively and comparatively very close to the average werewolf.

Also known as the “Dogman”, “Bear-Wolf”, “Manwolf”, “Bluff Monster” or “Eddy”, this beast has multiple news articles (Walworth County Week circa 1980-90) and even a low budget movie ( The Beast of Bray Road - 2005)! The author of the new articles, Linda Godfrey, was dismissive of this creature. But as she continued to write articles, she soon became convinced it was real. She then wrote a book called “The Beast of Bray Road: Tailing Wisconsin’s Werewolf.”

It is debated that this furry friend is aggressive. Some throw away the idea, and others take claim of it. There are no medical records of any harm, but only claims of the creature hopping on top of cars!

"I only really met Robert when he returned from India at the end of 1979. We became immediate friends and from then on in barely a day went by, when we were both in London, that we didn't either have a drink or a meal together. He adopted my wife and myself as his family; both his parents were practicing Christian Scientists, which Robert was most certainly not. When I came back to London in December 1972 to take over the gallery, there was a huge gap in the London Art scene left by the closure of Robert's gallery that I was able to try to fill. His 1983 reopening in Cork Street was welcomed by everybody with open arms.

One morning on my way to work I remember seeing Godfrey Pilkington on all fours trying to get into his gallery, Robert came up to me rather sheepishly to explain that he had been a bit miffed with Leslie Waddington and the night before, rather the worse for wear, he decided to fix Leslie's door with superglue. Unfortunately he got the wrong gallery. Sadly by the summer of 1985 his illness was really taking hold and he had to close his gallery. For the August Bank Holiday he really wanted to come to stay with us in Shropshire and have a chance to see his old friends locals to there. Paul and Linda McCartney arranged for somebody to bring him down and bring him back to London. He really rallied to the occasion much to everybody's great enjoyment. Sadly he collapsed on the way home and was never really the same afterwards. We had done a number of deals together and the final one, when he was basically bedridden, was when he sold Giorgio di Chirico's Nude, 1911-12, to one of his clients. It had originally belonged to René Gaffe who had an exhibition of works from his collection at the Zwemmer gallery in 1937. The show included major cubist works by Picasso and Braque as well as a few di Chiricos. At the end nothing had sold so Roland Penrose bought the lot including this painting. We got it by exchanging it for a di Chirico Still Life that we had bought from the Edward James Foundation with Mario Tazzoli. Robert was very much a Robert, never a Bob let alone 'Groovy Bob'. He was an inspiration, a life enhancer and a true friend and I miss him to this day. How Robert would have enjoyed his funeral as one of the mourners came by helicopter and his pilot not having been to the South London Crematorium before thought that he had found the perfect landing spot, only to discover too late that it was a sewage farm!"
