Scene at the British Army's headquarters at Thiepval Barracks, Lisburn following the detonation of two car bombs by the Irish Republican Army on 7 October 1996. Casualties are evacuated using mattresses as stretchers while one of the cars blazes in the background. The bombs were detonated without warning in a secure area of the base. One soldier was killed and thirty military and civilian personnel injured.
The incident was the first publicly acknowledged IRA attack to be carried out in Northern Ireland following the end of the ceasefire a few months earlier. It was interpreted as an attempt to provoke protestant paramilitary groups to end their own ceasefire. © Crown copyright. IWM (HU 98371)
