Angels Take Series.
Angels 10 Twins 3 W-Suarez (7-8) L-Bundy (8-8)
The Minnesota Twins bats showed some life last night in a win over the Angels. The rubber game was today and luck wasn’t on the Twins side again this afternoon. The Angels got things started in the first inning with a Mike Trout one-out double to left. Shohei Ohtani lined a single to center, but Caleb Hamilton couldn’t stop a return throw home and a run scored. With two outs, Matt Thaiss hit a run-scoring single to left. Anaheim had a two-run lead before the Twins grabbed a bat. The Twins answered in the second when Carlos Correa doubled with one out. Gio Urshela singled him home and we were tied at one after an inning of play. The Angels countered in the third with a Mike Trout blast off a Dylan Bundy slider. Jose Miranda led-off the bottom of the third with a base hit. Gary Sanchez kept the inning alive with a single and Nick Gordon singled home a run to retie the game at two. The Angels kept on coming back in the fourth with a Max Stassi infield single. Livan Soto reached on a fielder’s choice and Michael Stefanic hit a grounder to second. Jermaine Palacios made the dumb choice to throw to second base and it was wild. Luis Rengifo plated a pair with a single to left to put the Halos up 5-2 after four innings of play. Jose Suarez settled down and threw 5 2/3 solid innings. The Angels bullpen was doing a good job until Caleb Hamilton belted a Jose Quijada fastball out to left for a solo homer. It was his first Major League hit and the Twins were within a pair. Trevor Megill came on for the ninth and it was awful. Five runs scored on six hits and the Angels turned this game into a rout. Zack Weiss threw a 1-2-3 ninth as the Angels took the series from the Twins today.
-Final Thoughts- Dylan Bundy didn’t have his best stuff and the defense behind him was bad. He went 3 1/3 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Ronny Henriquez threw 4 2/3 shutout innings with four strikeouts. Trevor Megill gave up five runs in 1/3 of an inning and Jovani Moran had to get out of the ninth. The Twins will have their final off day of the season tomorrow. The White Sox come to town for the final home series of the year on Tuesday. Bailey Ober will get the start for the Twins.

Braves lose prospects, former GM banned by MLB over worldwide signing violations
Main League Baseball on Tuesday introduced extreme sanctions in opposition to the Atlanta Braves due to international-signing improprieties. As a part of the penalties, 12 gamers from the 2015 and 2016 worldwide signing courses have been declared restricted free brokers. The Braves additionally will not be capable of signal a participant for greater than $10,000 within the 2020 and 2021 signing intervals. For blowing previous prior signing swimming pools, the Braves had been already restricted to being provide not more than $300,000 for a person participant within the 2018 and 2019 worldwide signing intervals. MLB additionally dinged the Braves for an infraction in the latest June MLB draft.
Most notably, switch-hitting shortstop prospect Kevin Maitan is now a restricted free agent. Maitan was a consensus top-100 prospect coming into the 2017 season, and he responded by placing up stable numbers on the rookie-ball degree regardless of being simply 17 years of age. He is now free to signal with any group, albeit below worldwide signing-bonus restrictions. Maitan initially obtained a $four.25 million signing bonus in 2016.
The Braves additionally lose catcher prospect Abrahan Gutierrez. The 17-year-old performed 35 video games within the the rookie-level Gulf Coast League this previous season. The Braves reportedly signed Gutierrez to a $Three.53 million signing bonus in 2016. That is second solely to Maitan’s bonus within the 2016 class on which the Braves spent virtually $27 million. Additionally gone are the recipients of the third- and fourth-largest bonuses amongst Braves 2016 signees: Infielder Yunior Severino and right-hander Juan Contreras. This is how Baseball America ranked these 4 prospects throughout the 2016 class of worldwide free brokers:
Maitain: No. 1
Severino: No. eight
Gutierrez: No. 15
Contreras: No. 41
Maitan, once more per Baseball America, was the Braves’ No. 9 prospect, so the system stays among the best within the sport even after the lack of Maitan. Nonetheless, it is a large blow when it comes to system depth and when it comes to their means to be an lively participant on the worldwide market within the near- to mid-term.
The Braves are being punished partially for “bundling” signing bonuses for worldwide gamers, which allowed them to skate round MLB’s spending limits. Atlanta, like many different groups, had been restricted to $300,000 signing bonuses in recent times as a result of they’d earlier exceeded their spending pool. Bundling basically means they paid two gamers $300,000 bonuses, although many of the cash went to 1 participant. The opposite participant obtained a larger-than-expected bonus relative to his expertise for his troubles. In essence, that allowed the Braves to signal gamers who’d in any other case not take into account a inking for simply $300,000.
Final 12 months the Pink Sox had been caught endeavor the same scheme, and MLB declared each participant they signed in the course of the 2015-16 worldwide signing interval a free agent. Nevertheless, none of these prospects was of Maitan’s caliber. The Pink Sox had been additionally banned from signing worldwide gamers for one 12 months.
Again in October, a supply advised Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that the Braves’ violations had been “unprecedented,” and these penalties definitely again up that notion.
On the home entrance, MLB will even take from the Braves their third-round decide within the 2018 First-Yr Participant Draft (i.e., the June draft) after investigators found the membership supplied further advantages to outfielder Drew Waters, the 41st general decide. Waters will stay with the Braves.
In October, common supervisor John Coppolella and worldwide scouting director Gordon Blakely resigned from the Braves as a part of the fallout from the scandal. Mere days in the past, John Hart additionally exited the Braves’ entrance workplace. Just lately, former Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos was named GM of the Braves.
Although he was unlikely to get one other job in baseball anyway, Coppolella has been positioned on the completely ineligible record, which is called a “lifetime ban,” in instances comparable to this and with Pete Rose. Blakely has been suspended for one 12 months.
This is the total assertion from MLB commissioner Rob Manfred:
“My workplace has accomplished a radical investigation into violations of Main League Guidelines by the Atlanta Braves. The Braves cooperated all through the investigation, which was performed by MLB’s Division of Investigations. The senior Baseball Operations officers accountable for the misconduct are not employed by the Braves.  I’m assured that Terry McGuirk, John Schuerholz, Alex Anthopoulos and their staffs have and can put in place procedures to make sure that this sort of conduct by no means happens once more and which can enable the Membership to emerge from this tough interval because the sturdy and revered franchise that it has at all times been.
“The investigation established that the Braves circumvented worldwide signing guidelines from 2015 by way of 2017. Throughout the 2015-16 worldwide signing interval, the Braves signed 5 gamers topic to the Membership’s signing bonus pool to contracts containing signing bonuses decrease than the bonuses the Membership had agreed to offer the gamers. The Membership supplied the extra bonus cash to these gamers by inflating the signing bonus to a different participant who was exempt from their signing pool as a result of he certified as a ‘international skilled’ below MLB guidelines. In step with the principles, the Braves might have signed the entire 2015-16 gamers for the total, precise signing bonus quantities. Had the Membership signed the 5 gamers to contracts containing their precise bonuses, nevertheless, the Braves would have exceeded their signing bonus pool by greater than 5 % and would have been, below MLB guidelines, restricted from signing any gamers in the course of the subsequent two signing intervals for contracts with bonuses higher than $300,000.
“On account of the 2015-16 circumvention, the Braves had been capable of signal 9 high-value gamers in the course of the 2016-17 signing interval who would have been unavailable to them had the Membership precisely accounted for its signings in the course of the 2015-16 signing interval. These gamers had been Juan Contreras, Yefri del Rosario, Abrahan Gutierrez, Kevin Maitan, Juan Carlos Negret, Yenci Peña, Yunior Severino, Livan Soto and Guillermo Zuniga. As well as, the Braves entered into extra ‘package deal’ agreements in 2016 and 2017 by which they signed Brandol Mezquita, Angel Rojas and Antonio Sucre for lowered quantities, and supplied extra cash to these gamers’ brokers by signing different gamers affiliated with their brokers to contracts with inflated bonuses. As a way to treatment these violations, I’m releasing these gamers from their contracts with the Braves and declaring them free brokers eligible to signal with every other Membership. The procedures governing the gamers’ launch and the signing course of will likely be communicated to MLB Golf equipment below separate cowl.
“The investigation additionally decided that the Braves: (i) agreed to signal six gamers to inflated signing bonuses pursuant to an settlement with prospect Robert Puason’s agent in change for a dedication that Puason would signal with the Membership within the 2019-20 signing interval; and (ii) supplied prospect Ji-Hwan Bae extra-contractual compensation. As a way to treatment these violations, I’m prohibiting the Membership from signing Robert Puason when he turns into eligible to signal, and disapproving the contract between Bae and the Braves, which has not but change into efficient.
“Whereas the treatments mentioned above will deprive the Braves of the advantages of their circumvention, I consider that extra sanctions are warranted to penalize the Membership for the violations dedicated by its staff. Accordingly, the Braves will likely be prohibited from signing any worldwide participant for greater than $10,000 in the course of the 2019-20 signing interval, which is the primary signing interval by which the Braves are usually not topic to any signing restrictions below our guidelines; and the Braves’ worldwide signing bonus pool for the 2020-21 signing interval will likely be lowered by 50 %.
“The investigation additionally decided that the Braves supplied impermissible advantages, which had been by no means supplied, to a participant they chose within the First-Yr Participant Draft in an try and persuade him to signal for a decrease bonus. As a penalty for the Membership’s tried circumvention involving a draft choice, the Braves will forfeit their third-round choice within the 2018 First-Yr Participant Draft.
“With respect to particular person self-discipline, former Braves Basic Supervisor John Coppolella will likely be positioned on the completely ineligible record, efficient instantly. Former Braves Particular Assistant Gordon Blakeley will likely be suspended for a interval of 1 12 months, efficient instantly, and should not carry out providers for any MLB Membership throughout his suspension. I intend to self-discipline different Braves’ Worldwide Baseball Operations staff who participated within the misconduct after the completion of our inside procedures.  My workers will converse to the Gamers Affiliation and officers within the Dominican Republic relating to acceptable penalties for the representatives of the gamers who deliberately participated in schemes to bypass our guidelines, none of whom are licensed by the Gamers Affiliation.”
Evidently, that is fairly hefty and an enormous deterrent to entrance places of work collaborating in such actions sooner or later. Particularly observe the case of Coppolella. Is it actually value this apply to place your complete profession in baseball on the road? Manfred got here out sturdy right here.
The Braves, on the similar time, appear resigned to their destiny:

MLB drops death penalty on Braves, bans John Coppolella for life
MLB has hit the Atlanta Braves with their version of the death penalty as punishment for the franchise’s violations over the past few years. The punishments are so severe that it’s clear the league wanted to make an example out of the Braves as a warning to clubs not to do anything similar in the future.
The Braves were forced to give up 12 prospects they had signed for an excess of $20 million because of their rule violations. Former GM John Coppolella, who resigned in September after word of the investigation emerged, has been banned for life. Former special assistant Gordon Blakely has been suspended a year. The team’s ability to sign players in Latin America over the next few years has been severely restricted. They also lost a draft pick in 2018.
As penalty for bundling bonuses and negotiating deals for outside pay/compensation, the Braves are losing Kevin Maitan, Juan Contreras, Yefri del Rosario, Abrahan Gutierrez, Juan Carlos Negret, Yenci Pena, Yunior Severino, Livan Soto and Guillermo Zuniga, who will now be free agents. They also will not be allowed to sign Robert Puason, a prospect for whom they had reached a deal.
The Braves were found to have offered impermissible benefits to draft picks as well in order to circumvent their limited signing bonus pool. They were penalized a third-round pick in 2018 as a result.
Here’s the full press release from MLB on the subject:
