Another Life

A rasped cough and hack, Ljos is clutching to himself in both pain and shock. All he remembers is light and screams.. Cries from both the hunters he knew and the beasts they were attempting to hunt.. A threat for both and yet such a traumatic moment of light that his memory is just that; light. Blinding, overwhelming light. No other sensation..

Gasping and now sobbing as he attempts to sit himself up, Ljos knows not how he ended up in the comforts of bed but such sheets are not familiar. Nor the scent.. Foreign but herbal nonetheless. 

A second of being numb as he takes in his surroundings, the pain is sudden and sharp all throughout his body. A sudden toss down onto the very bed he wanted to leave, he writhes and groans out in sheer pain. 

At least he is alone in his vulnerability– 

“Oh dear, you’ve awoken! Stay down, stay down!” But the language is entirely unfamiliar.. And though only a Hrothgar, he’s never seen one and with such a beastlike appearance, Ljos only feels threatened. 

“H-H..Hverrr errtu?!” Ljos chuts angrily, though his tongue is just as foreign. And out of sheer panic does he struggle to get himself up more.. Almost immediately, he accidentally throws himself off the bed with a hard thud. 

With every ilm of him feeling broken, the veena can only howl out in pain as he lies there.

“Shite, ‘xactly what I was ‘fraid of.. foreign. Anyroad.. Shh, shhhh..” The Hrothgar falls to her knees joining Ljos’ side with the hovering of hesitant hands. “Settle..” A soft casting of blue light, Ljos can only growl to himself as he accepts the magicks.. Eyes fluttering shut, the comfort of the ‘beast’s’ cast is cool and numbing; all his sharp pain has dulled. But because of this, he is out of it.. Unable to runoff. He just accepts his vulnerable state. 

“There we go..” Though he cannot understand the one who tends to him, he finds their tone much like.. A mother’s would be. A brief thought of his wife and then tears. “It’s okay, you’re safe.. Let’s get you back to bed..”

“Eg vvvvvvil...” hiccup, sob. “farrraaa h-heim...” A pathetic plea to go home but somehow, he feels that will not happen. Not if he is under the care of this unfamiliar beast.. because only in another world, another life would he be.

ok so, there's one MAJOR difference here: Tyrian stars have completely different life cycles, and are legitimately useful for augury.

Firstly, the night sky evolves much, much faster than it does in real life, and that's why constellations are all named in modern language. There's no "Cuspis" but there is a "Siege Devourer," and I posit that this is because the stars change position (or existence status) relatively quickly, so ancient constellations simply don't exist anymore. I feel justified in saying this, mostly due to the fact that Elder Dragons form new stars when they appear, and also it's just really odd to not have any Old Names for constellations.

For the second point, the Canthans in GW1 did divination with the positions of the stars (and planets, see note below), as did the Jotunn, and some Norn culture as well (if memory serves).

Tyria does, in fact, have an inclined axis of rotation. The different lengths of day and night in core maps, combined with the equal lengths in Cantha, imply this directly.

There are other planets (almost certainly discovered by the Jotunn before their fall, given the massive telescope found in the Jotunn path in Arah).

The following are pure headcanon with zero base in canon, though it's all perfectly compatible.

Tyria has two moons, the large one we see in-game being named Tungl and a much smaller, nearly too-dark-to-see named Flakkari.

The sun is named Ljos, but is near-identical to Earth's Sol.

Current S.P.A.C.E. Krewe projects:

Our optical observatory is quite good due to Kanni's optical expertise and Cidda's specialty in high-detail photography, so we'll have good imagery of those other planets I mentioned, and I'll have an excuse to build up the entire Ljosian system.

Yukii is pioneering the field of radio astronomy (my real-life job), and Leppa is currently using that equipment to perform a survey of deep sky objects. There's some weird stuff out there in real life, and who knows what she'll find in this universe?

Nixxi and Takka are working on launch vehicles to officially start the space exploration process. Satellites fitted with optical cameras and other sensors will revolutionize cartography, geology, and navigation, once we get the rockets working.

Kovvi's current project involves extreme-range wireless data transmission, including images and live voice. This will initially be used in conjunction with the satellites, but will eventually result in things like long-range encrypted communication devices becoming much cheaper to produce.

For å kunne fungere i det medialiserte samfunnet må ein vere digitalt kompetent, i ein eller annan grad. Men kva er digital kompetanse?

Digital kompetanse er fleire ting, so lat oss byrje med det mest openberre: å kunne bruke digitale einingar og program. Ein essensiell del av digital kompetanse er å kunne slå på ei datamaskin, logge på (og ikkje gløyme passordet til neste gong), opne programmet ein skal nytte, og klare å orientere seg i den digitale jungelen. Kva som skjer viss du trykkjer der, korleis du får opna ein ny fane, kor du finn overføringsfunksjonen i nettbanken, kor nettlesaren er, og ikkje minst kva som er forskjellen på dine personlege notatar og postar på Facebook. Det tek oss eigentleg over til den andre delen av digital kompetanse - korleis ein oppfører seg på digitale plattformer.

For er det noko vi alle har sett, og kanskje til og med humra i skjegget over, so er det Facebook-innlegg som kanskje ikkje var heilt passande, og kanskje ikkje ein gong skulle sett dagens ljos. Å vite kva som sømmer seg og ikkje er eit aspekt av digital kompetanse. Å vere klar over at viss ein berre skriv "ok" etterfulgt av eit punktum i ein chat kan det verke passiv-aggressivt, eller at aubergine-emojien ikkje på nokon måte handlar om frukt er ogso digital kompetanse. Det er ikkje essensielt for å kunne dra nytte av dei digitale verktøya, men det er ein fordel. Viss du postar rare ting på Facebook kvar dag, ser barnebarna dine dei rare postane dine oftare enn dei ser deg, og dei vert med å skape eit bilete av kven du er. Ein må skjøne normene, kva som er innafor å publisere og ikkje, og vite kva publikum ein snakkar til.
