PAX East 2023: Loco Motive is a Wonderfully Crazy Train

While it’s easy to say that Loco Motive is a throwback to classic adventure games — which it does feel like — the Reuss Express ends up providing unique, subtle twists that help give the game its own unique flavor, and after ending the demo with the introduction of some sort of shadowy secret society, we can’t wait to see exactly where this trip leads when the game comes out later this year for PC and Switch.

Another thing I noticed but no one talks about. Now we all agree the Atla movie is trash. But one major mishap would’ve been the pursue of Azula. She’s depicted as laughing because in the movie she’s interpreted as eeeviiilll. You know, a maniac, a sadist. But she isn’t. In the show when she’s smiling during Zuko’s Agni Kai with fire lord Ozai it’s because she feels a thrill to what she’s been taught represents a service in justice: punishing weakness and power reigning. Not because of inflicted pain.

Compare this:

To this:

Same for when she tracks down Zuko at the northern air temple, smiling visciously.

But her motivation that this smile originates from isn’t amusement but victory in dominance.

She just assured herself that she’s powerful. People who do that chase power because they run from weakness.

In the Boiling Rock she doesn’t needlessly torture the accused the second she finds out he isnt a traitor because she does in fact not get any arousal from such acts of violence.

Even in the beach episode:

This isn’t a game for her. She’s not a loco, she’s manipulated (and deeply traumatised) and I think it would’ve been a very tragic mistake to write Azula not misunderstood but like an unrealistic idea of what mental disorders make people do. Cruelty for the sake of cruelty, or because that’s the only way we can feel something like so many blockbusters make their villains out to be.

It’s would’ve taken away one of the main points of the show really, that an entire nation can be mislead and convinced of their rightfulness and even benevolence through propaganda, resulting in the Defense of War. This is also thematised in this episode:

And Zuko challenging his father during the black sun *rephrased: “When I grew up I was told the war was a way to share our prosperity with the world. But they hate us.” They believed this of course. Raised on lies you can’t tell apart those incongruencies and propaganda.

It’s a generational cycle…

I mean, we only see her like two times in the movie and she’s built up as being the villain to come so the audience is supposed to fear her so that might’ve been a strategic move making those few seconds as creepy as possible and they were planning on giving her her calculating self later but since they already sucked at introducing the mysterious and untouchable fire lord like it was a new art form:

I guess it’s safe to assume this was the trope they were going for with Azula.

More glad than ever they couldn’t develop that.

i do think the blues and reds needed like a true believer type whose goals aren’t clouded. i think that could’ve been surge.

like, temple genuinely believes in the cause but in the end of the day is more concerned with his own bullshit. then you could have buckey and probably cronut not give a shit about justice for the sim troopers and just tagging along bc it lets them be evil. buckey more obviously so and cronut putting on a mask of kindness.

then you get loco and like. lorenzo who are literally just there because everyone else is there. no skin in this game no horse in this race. gene probably is on the revenge train

and then surge could be like. truly genuinely believing in this course of action. hes fighting against tyranny and oppression he genuinely wants wants the liberation of the sim troopers. no ulterior motives besides maybe like. being a hero but even then you can have him acknowledge that he knows he’s NOT gonna get venerated as a hero by the unsc.

i just think it’d be a good way to be able to actually talk about the issue without having character motivations get in the way and like. come on it’s not like canon was doing anything else with him.

My first experience with digital taglines was when I joined conferences on such computer relay systems as Fidonet and Wildnet in the mid-1980s. Users would add them to the bottom of a conference post, and they were mostly well-known aphorisms and sentiments circulating in the culture as a whole. An example of one I saw repeated often, to paraphrase: "Sure I'm in shape! Round is a shape isn't it?"

With my penchant for wordplay and limerick writing, I took it as a personal challenge to compose several unique tags to cap off my own posts at various user groups. Some of you dear readers may even have come across a few of my personal tags as they bounced around the globe. Below is a partial list of my original aphorisms written between 1986-1998. Hope something below brings you a smile today!

Beware of geeks bearing .GIFs! Never surf faster than your guardian geek can type. Freudian slips are the underwear of ideas. I seized the day, but it struggled free and slapped me in the face. Nintendo recently announced several stunning indie titles in the latest Nintendo Indie World Showcase (December 15, 2021).

Sea of Stars from Sabotage Studio is a turned based RPG. The story follows two Children of the Solstice who fight off the monsterous creations of The Fleshmancer by combining the powers of the sun and moon to perform Eclipse Magic.

My response to Judith Arnopp

I'm sure the author means well and is a talented novelist, but there are omissions of fact here that make this post misleading.

The author confuses marriage and sex. Girls did sometimes marry at 12-14 (Elizabeth was actually 13 when Seymour married Parr, not 14) but they did not have their first child until at least 16 or 17. To put that into perspective, Elizabeth didn't turn 16 until about 6 months after Seymour was dead. Yes, Margaret Beaufort. Margaret Beaufort is the exception that proves the rule. One case is not a trend. In the eyes of the Tudors, if Elizabeth was too young for children, that made her too young for sex. Also in the eyes of the Tudors, as Elizabeth's stepfather and guardian, Seymour was basically in loco parentis, and it was his duty to safeguard her modesty and her reputation. He clearly didn't care about either.

The author mentions Seymour slapping Elizabeth early in the morning in her bedroom, but leaves out key facts, which makes the situation (unintentionally, I am sure) appear more ambiguous than it was. Seymour came to her bedroom "barelegged" (ie. not wearing trousers, only a shirt that would have covered to about mid-thigh or knee length). Where did he slap Elizabeth? On the back, but also on the bottom. He also asked of an acquaintance whether Elizabeth's "great buttocks were grown any less or no".

The author's phrasing "dallied with a royal princess" "tempted by the charms of a young girl" is also misleading. Even if Elizabeth had been 16, 21, 31, or Seymour's own age, the sources make no mention of her making advances on Seymour, or even welcoming his. When he tickled her she retreated into the bed "so he could not come at her". She hid behind bedcurtains, she ran through to her maids. Even if Elizabeth loved Seymour (there's no proof she did) she clearly didn't want to be left alone with him. When Seymour cut her dress "into a hundred pieces" Elizabeth told Ashley that it wasn't her fault, because Parr "held her down" and he cut the dress. She did not say it was fun, or a game. Kat Ashley told Seymour to stop, for the sake of Elizabeth's reputation. He said he would not stop, "for he meant no evil". Even if he believed he meant no evil, it's telling that a woman's discomfort was not enough to make him stop solely out of concern for the comfort of others.

If Seymour loved Katherine, he certainly didn't love Elizabeth. He slandered her, telling Katherine that he had seen Elizabeth throw her arms around a man's neck- not chaste behaviour. Katherine confronted Elizabeth, who protested that the only man she saw was her tutor, Grindal. To get away with his actions, Seymour did not want Elizabeth complaining to adults with authority, or for them to believe her over him.

The author quotes Starkey rather selectively. Starkey did theorise Elizabeth loved Seymour, but in the way abuse victims fall for their abusers. He theorises that Elizabeth shunned sexual relations not just because of Seymour's downfall (that put her in serious danger) but because of his abuse. Seymour's actions held a harsh lesson for Elizabeth: no matter how handsome, charming, popular, or charismatic a man might be, it was not wise to place her safety entirely in his hands.

That Seymour was popular with the commons shouldn't be taken too far. After all, Anne Boleyn was fiercely hated by the common people, and we shouldn't think less of her for that.

Seymour's poem is rather unremarkable, containing the usual tropes of a scaffold speech: pride before a fall, earthly glory is vain, life is short, faith in God's mercy, God save the King. His poem shows his Protestantism ('the elect') but doesn't show anything about his motives earlier in his life: it was written at the end of it, so it is possible he changed his mind. Too little, too late.

I agree with the author: to seek power in his own right was not itself monstrous. He probably thought he could do a better job. But as the author points out, he abused his power as Lord High Admiral. Encouraging piracy was hardly beneficial to the common man, sailor, or merchant. He also abused his power (as Starkey points out) over the girl entrusted to his care. It's probably for the best that he didn't get any more power.

Seymour was indeed a human being, and I agree that it's important to portray him in fiction as three-dimensional. He had hopes, dreams, fears, interests, relationships. It's important to humanise Seymour and look at things from his point of view, because abusers look like everybody else. In fiction, we must make sure that when we humanise historical figures, we don't forget the very real pain they caused to very real people. Even if Seymour's actions, and his disregard for Elizabeth's consent, had been 100% acceptable, that doesn't make Elizabeth, in reality, any less a child: too young to cope with any sexualised overtures from an adult. We must humanise both victim and villain: if we fail to humanise the victim, we don't humanise, we exonerate.

Elizabeth was a human being too.
