Loki Season 2 Reviews Are In
The first reviews are in for Loki Season 2 and they are glowing for the most part.
Critics who saw the first four episodes early praised the show's cast and smart science-fiction story, but it has not come without its flaws it seems.
Comicbook.com's Brandon Davis called the series "a thrilling time-traveling mystery:"
"'Loki' Season 2 rules. The first 4 episodes have a thrilling time-traveling mystery and charm. Some of the TVA sci-fi jargon is hard to follow. The cast is tremendous together. The sets are great. Overall, it’s awesome. Hoping Episodes 5 & 6 stick the landing!"
He added newcomer Ke Huy Quan is "brilliant," complimenting the actor's chemistry with the returning cast:
"Yes, Ke Huy Quan is brilliant in 'Loki'. His character has a key role in Season 2. He brings so much charm and joy to this show, brilliant chemistry with the rest of the cast."
Erik Davis from Fandango was similarly positive, remarking the series "continues to be [his] favorite MCU show:"
"I LOVE 'Loki'! I’ve watched the first 4 episodes & #Loki continues to be my favorite MCU show. This season has a more frantic pace to it, which keeps tensions high the entire time. Still brainy & weird w/ great chemistry among its cast. Ke Huy Quan is a big scene stealer of course, but the story - full of time travel, timelines, trickery & a guy named Timely - is reminiscent of Marvel Studios at its best & most entertaining. Eps 5 & 6 are gonna be wild!"
Phase Zero's Jamie Jirak pointed to the "direction and cinematography" as particular high points of the series premiere, also singing Ke Huy Quan's praises:
"I had a blast at the 'Loki' launch event. I only stayed for the first episode, because I want to remain a woman of the people on  Phase Zero but I LOVED IT. The direction and cinematography blew me away. I missed Tom and Owen so much. Ke Huy Quan MVP!!"
Jenna Anderson from Comicbook.com called Loki Season 2 "[her] favorite thing Disney+ has released this year:"
"'Loki' Season 2 is, by far, my favorite thing Disney+ has released this year. The cinematography is outstanding, and the cast does a great job of carrying what could be a very overwhelming plot. It’s not flawless, but I dig it."
She also jumped on the Ke Huy Quan train, saying "[he] is absolutely wonderful:"
"As a Mobius and Ravonna girlie, I’m very happy with where their storylines seem to be headed in 'Loki' Season 2. And unsurprisingly, Ke Huy Quan is absolutely wonderful."
Cinema Blend's Erik Swann used words like "kooky, charming, funny, and sweet," describing the series as "must-see TV:"
"He Who Remains is gone, but 'Loki' remains must-see TV! I've seen Season 2's first four episodes, and they're just as kooky, charming, funny and sweet as one would hope. Eric Martin takes on EP duties and skillfully builds on the show's mythology. Fans are in for a wild ride."
Decider's Alex Zalben pointed to some shortcomings of the streaming show's first four episodes, making mention of "it feel[ing] a little more like TVA: The Series featuring Loki," but still called it a "blast to watch:"
"I have some issues with 'Loki' Season 2 (based on the first 4 eps). Direction isn't as strong, it feels a little more like TVA: The Series Featuring Loki, the Jonathan Majors of it all. But it's still a blast to watch, and Ke Huy Quan is the perfect addition to the cast."
Brobible senior writer Eric Italiano wrote, "Loki reminds us what makes the MCU tick," calling the show a "true post-Endgame highlight:"
"'Loki' reminds us what makes the MCU tick is merging a character with creators who understand their tone. S2 epitomizes that, as the God of Mischief's journey feels absurd yet important -- his world gonzo but deeply felt and real. The series stands as a true post-'Endgame' highlight."
Chris Killian from Comicbook.com was just as high on the series, opining that Loki "continues to be the highest quality Marvel content out of the D+ series:
"So I’ve seen the first few episodes of the second season of 'Loki' and it continues to be the highest quality Marvel content out of the D+ series. Tom and Owen’s chemistry remains top notch but the real MVP is Ke Huy Quan who is - no surprise - fantastic. Steals every scene."
Screenrant's Rob Keyes - who made it clear he "didn't love [the] first season [of Loki]" - said Season 2 is "better, faster, and takes bigger swings:"
"Watched the first four (out of six) episodes for 'Loki' season 2 and loved it. I didn't love first season and this is better, faster, and takes bigger swings. Depending how they followup the WILD fourth episode, it might be the best Marvel Studios show on Disney+. Much needed."
Kirsten Acuna from Insider was not as wild about the series' second effort, noting it was "a bit tough to follow at times:"
"Watched the first 4 eps of 'Loki' Season 2. Not exactly what I expected given Season 1's end. Love seeing Hiddleston + Wilson back together, but it's a bit tough to follow at times. (Had to rewatch some of it twice.) Too much McDonald's. Ke Huy Quan is the show's best addition."
And Nicole Drum (staff writer at Comicbook.com) voiced her thoughts on the show's various "hiccups" but said it was "an absolute must-watch even with its issues:"
"'Loki' Season 2 is still the best thing at the MCU party but Season 2 definitely has its hiccups, especially with pacing, and doesn’t quite live up to Season 1. It’s cinematography and direction are EPIC, though, and it is an absolute must-watch even with its issues."

Reviewing non-Marvel Loki Things (That I've Been Exposed to)
I am certain there's more, but these are all the non-Marvel Loki-related media I could think of that I've consumed. Maybe I'll do a part 2 if I think of some other things I've read/seen. These aren't really full reviews, just basic reactions of what I remember of these pieces of media.
The Gospel of Loki, by Joanne M. Harris
I...did not finish this. It was kind of interesting, I remember. But I'll be honest, one of the lines I remember most clearly is from the beginning where Loki says something like "For some reason on Asgard, I'm not allowed to fuck beasts or men and no one can tell me why." And then he just kind of, goes with it? Like first of all, why, if you can live forever, would you not only limit yourself to one gender (I'm okay with leaving the bestiality alone, but you could probably make a case for this, too, if they can consent), but force everyone else to, also? And anyway, even if Odin is a Puritan prick for some reason, the least believable thing about all this is that Loki stands for it???!!! Why is this the one thing about which he's like 'Welp, guess Odin knows best'? Frankly, it broke my suspension of disbelief for the whole thing. (You know how I was like Kid Loki saying "I killed Thor" made me go 'Oh, okay, the Loki writers don't have a clue who Loki is fundamentally'? Yeah, this is the line that made me do that with Harris.) I didn't even get far enough to maybe (probably) read my favorite myth (Sigyn catching the venom in her bowl).
Norse Mythology, by Neil Gaiman
So much better, holy shit! Leaps and bounds better!!! This is one of my favorite books. I've talked about it a little on here, but he's such a great writer, and I laughed out loud so many times for the way he portrays Thor and Loki especially (it helped that I first read this listening to him read the audiobook). I just love how he portrays Loki as only smart in comparison to the other gods, who are truly dumb as bricks, with Loki only slightly more clever by comparison. But I was still so attached to Loki that when he causes his own downfall in the end (like he does in the myths) I think I genuinely cried. This is one of those books I read at least once a year.
The Bifrost Incident, by The Mechanisms
I'll be real with you, I mostly only listened to the tracks I knew Loki (and Sigyn) were on. But I did also read the synopsis on the wiki, so I know the gist of the musical. And what I'll say of it is this: I discovered the album four days prior to writing this, and I've listened to at least the Loki track at least twice a day since. I'm a little grateful it's just (as far as I know) an album, because if there was a recorded performance somewhere, I could not watch it (even though I obviously would because I like to let myself suffer). Loki's arc is just too fucking painful (which is honestly saying something, given some of the shit he gets put through in other media).
Ragnarok, Netflix
I watched the first episode. I felt like it ended stupidly and way too dramatically for even the pilot. I know it's called Ragnarok, but it's a modern retelling, and Thor and Loki are kids, so it doesn't have to go so hard from the word Go. And Laurits did not make a good first impression on me either. Can't remember exact reasons why, though. I watched this a long time ago.

My Loki S2E2 Live Reactions Will Be Up Later Today
Guess instead of a 420 Review of Episode 2, It'll have to be a Too-Much-Sleep-Meds Review because of the COVID. lol this will be something for the ages. I still will do this, because I need the perk in my heart to counter the prick in my lungs.
I just hope Sylvie doesn't appear too much and make me sicker.
I heard I may need a doctor...

I liked the episode better than the first. I just feel like overall the pacing is too slow, but the little glimpse of old Loki was enjoyable though 😈

holy fuck i am a FOOL
how. how did i JUST NOW connect jamie's sad little laugh and his general "clearly trying not to burst into tears right here on this bus" reaction when he gets the army man from ted at the end of the season 1 finale, to the scene at the beginning of the season in which jamie witnesses ted offering sam a similar army man
you know. the scene in which ted tells sam that henry gave the army men to him to "help keep me safe while i'm away"

So I obsess a lot about how small and vulnerable Jamie looks when he goes to ask Ted to let him come back to Richmond in the second episode of season two, but today I rewatched the second episode of season one and now I'm having Feelings about how similar Jamie's whole vibe is in the “positive reinforcement” scene. They’ve just played their first match under Ted and lost, and Ted’s called Jamie into his office to try out Keeley’s suggestion on how to get through to Jamie.
Tumblr media
There's this gifset showing how Jamie tends to look down when he's feeling vulnerable, and that's exactly Jamie's response when Ted compliments him in this scene as well. But also, now that I know what to look for, I realized that that vulnerability never goes away at any point during this scene. Everything about his body language the entire time is SO much like the scene in Lavender.
Watching this scene again also made me wonder if Jamie doesn't actually get praised that often - at least not in meaningful, one-on-one settings by people who are actually in his life. Obviously Jamie's rich and famous and he gets a lot of praise from fans, but there's a different quality to a bunch of strangers singing your praises vs somebody looking you in the eye and telling you, genuinely, that you are "the best athlete I have ever coached."

My #1 post of 2022
so i just watched this interview with brett, juno, and phil and i am losing my mind because the interviewer opened by sort of reluctantly calling their dynamic a “three-way” and not a single one of them disagreed with him
and, more importantly - this is what phil's face did in response

Singham again: Rohit Shetty showed a glimpse of Singham again
Singham is one of the most famous and awaited franchises. It is the third installment of the Singham franchise, following Singham (2011) and Singham Returns (2014). Fans are very excited to see the glimpse. Rohit Shetty is the director and Yunus Sajawal, Shantanu Srivastava, Milap Zaveri are the writers. Jomon T. John has done the cinematography. Singham again stars Ajay Devgn and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. The film is scheduled to be released in theaters on August 15, 2024. Akshay Kumar, Kareena Kapoor, Tiger Shroff, Ranveer Singh will also be present in the film. According to the report, Arjun Kapoor will play the role of villain Singham again.   View this post on Instagram   A post shared by Rohit Shetty (@itsrohitshetty) Tiger Shroff is playing the role of ACP in Singham again. There is also a lot of hope of Tiger Shroff's participation in the film. Recently Tiger Shroff's Ganapath film was seen in theatres. Tiger Shroff's new movies Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan in which Tiger Shroff has worked with Akshay Kumar. Deepika and Ranveer have worked together in 'Bombay Talkies', 'Finding Fanny (Ranveer Singh special appearance)', 'Ram-Leela', 'Bajirao Mastani', 'Padmavat' and '83', Cirkus (Deepika special appearance). Now both will work together again in Singham again. itsrohitshetty post, "NAARI SITA KA BHI ROOP HAI AUR DURGA KA BHI... MEET THE MOST BRUTAL AND VIOLENT OFFICER OF OUR COP UNIVERSE… SHAKTI SHETTY... MY LADY SINGHAM… DEEPIKA PADUKONE" itsrohitshetty another post, "Meet Special Task Force officer ACP SATYA 🇮🇳… the immortal, like Truth! Welcome to the squad…Tiger"   Ranveer Singh's last 3 films Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, Jayeshbhai Jordaar and Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani in 83 have become hits. Jayeshbhai Jordaar and 83 films turned out to be a flop. Recently, Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh came on the TV reality show Koffee with Karan Season 8 Episode 1. In the film Suryavanshi, both Ajay Devgan (DCP Bajirao Singham) and Ranveer Singh (Inspector Sangram "Simmba" Bhalerao) came in special roles. Ajay Devgan, Tiger, Akshay Kumar, Ranveer Singh are coming together in the film, so there is a lot of action. The film is expected to be big-budget and feature some of the biggest action sequences in the history of Indian Cop films. Rohit Shetty's Instagram post has gone viral and fans are very happy. A general review of Loki (2021) - !! possible spoilers ahead !!
(If you told my Scandinavia-and-Marvel-obsessed twelve years old self in 2011 that ten years later I would have been doing this she would have laughed in your face, and yet here I am.)
Until very recent times Loki stans were probably the only part of the mcu fandom that agreed on everything. That is, until the show came out. Now everywhere you turn on the internet there is discourse about wether it was good or bad, people arguing that that is not “our Loki” (tf man) so here I am with my own review.
Premise n.1: I am going to be as objective as I can because my field of studies is compared literatures a.k.a. I’ve studied penty of cinematic and theatral critique and, not gonna lie, the weak ass reviews I’ve read till now are all based on the writer’s personal preferences and therefore are fucking useless, so I’ll specify with a bold “personally” my own preferences as a fan.
Premise n.2: norse mythology also is my field of studies so I do have sources for those bits (ngl I’m so fucking delighted I chose to write my dissertation on Loki’s trickster archetype rn) but, but, here’s also a friendly reminder that Marvel’s Loki is only inspired by the mythological one and not a perfect copy of him
Premise n.3: with a second season coming, which is not really a second season but the continuation of the first (for those who don’t know: it was originally supposed to be only one 12-episode-long series but they had to split it because of the virus and shit), what people are doing is basically coming to conclusions without having the whole picture and that’s like a load of bs, especially if you are aware that the story is not fucking over yet. That being said, my review takes into account this.
So sit tight and buckle your seatbelts kids, cause it’s gonna be a long one.
Is Loki a masterpiece? no, there are lots of things that could have been changed or taken off the show without actually having to change the whole storyline.
But is it the worst show in the history of shows? aw hell no.
First of all, we need to place the characterisation he had in the movies:
- Loki causes mischief (Thor’s ruined coronation) but in doing so he does damage to himself too (finds out he’s adopted, cue huge breakdown) so he tries to do good (in his mind, by killing Lufey) then he “dies” (lets go after the fight on the Bifrost), then in a quick parenthesis he returns as a villain to the Avengers, loses the battle, and is brought back to Asgard. In TDW, he causes mischief (tells the Kursed the way to the stairs) but in doing so he does damage to himself (the Kursed kills Frigga) so he tries to do good (help Thor get revenge for their mother) then he dies. He returns once again revealing a fake death and causes mischief (imprisons Odin) but in doing so he does damage to himself too (Odin’s death frees Hela) so he tries to do good (helps Thor on Sakaar) then he dies once again, this time definitely. Notice a pattern?
That, my friends, is called a huge pain in the ass to write for your dissertation trickster sequence or trickster cycle. It’s a particular sequence that has it’s roots in the mythical Loki, one of the “original” trickster archetypes: basically, the trickster turns a situation upside down for his own benefit but in doing so begins a chain reaction that keeps on going as a cycle of mischief-benefits-negative side effects. An example of a trickster sequence in the myths that I luckily still had in my notes:
Tumblr media
Trickster characters are really, really hard to write and characterize because of this, as there are only three alternatives:
1- The trickster dies, a definitive way to put an end to the cycle
2- The trickster keeps on repeating the unending cycle, thus becoming a really flat, boring and predictable character
3- The most difficult one (but also the most effective to get out of the cycle), an archetype switch. That means starting to write a long journey through which the character reaches another archetype, i.e. that of the Hero.
Of course after three turns of the cycle the marvel authors used the first option, killing off Loki, only to have a show about a version of him (from the Avengers movie) that had only gone through one cycle. Thus they had option two a.k.a turning the God of Mischief into possibly the flattest and most boring character ever, or option three a.k.a. the archetype switch. Guess which one they chose.
Many people think that the switch has been made to the archetype of the Hero and are angry for it because “it’s not our Loki” (which btw is total bullshit because the Loki from the show is similar to the one of the Thor movies, if we had to pick an impostor that would be the Loki from the Avengers which has a completely different characterisation from the others and is the only actual one that’s a villain whereas in TDW+Ragnarok he’s a helper and in Thor is neither one nor the other) but that is definitely not it. Personally, I couldn’t see yet any defining trait of a particular archetype so for that we’ll have to wait for season 2 (as I’ve already said, it would be unfair coming to conclusions without having the whole picture), though I’m one ninety-nine percent sure he’s not switching to the Hero one.
Now, on to the show’s characterisation.
- One thing I’ve seen a lot of is talk of “he’s so dumb, he’s not the cunning and smart Loki we know” and “ew Sylvie x Loki” (personally the selfcest ship also makes me icky, ngl) but boi lemme tell you something: it’s been said more than once that Sylvie as a character was added in stead of Amora the Enchantress, as a mix of Female Loki and, indeed, Amora herself. After the season finale personally I’m starting to think that she is indeed just Amora, but be it just her or a mix of her and Female Loki there is one thing that I feel like reminding: Amora literally enchants men to fall in love with her, so she can use them. Again, I can’t critique the show as a whole without season 2 being out yet, but let’s keep in mind that it is still a possibility, especially now that we know that in the last episode she did kiss Loki just to get to Kang.
- The catalyst for the archetype switch was in my opinion a bit too fast, but that was maybe the most effective way to do it. Why? Well, the only really good way to actuate it is a long arc, an arc for which the show definitely did not have enough run time for. So the producers got really smart, I’ll have to admit, and got the chance to use what was set up for them in Endgame with the fact that the Loki of the show is a past version, a variant: they showed the variant what would happen to him. If you were shown the things that were in the file, the death of your mother, your father, yourself, possibly your brother, (the file has never shown that Thor’s actually alive and well so it is safe to assume that show-Loki thinks that his brother is also dead), all of your race, wouldn’t your psyche be totally changed as a result of not only shock, but also of grief? And if you felt all of that while in an unfamiliar and hostile place, wouldn’t you attach yourself to the first familiar thing (Sylvie) too?
- In my opinion, another catalyst for the switch is the presence of Mobius. As I’ve said: shock plus grief plus being stuck in an unfamiliar and hostile place. The in comes the one person who is at least decent to you and it is again only natural to get attached, so when that person tells you that a villain is not all you are, and that you can be whatever you decide to be, you do start believing it yourself.
Tumblr media
And at last, the LGBT+ rep:
- As a bi person who’s grown up with the mcu, you can imagine my joy in knowing that now Loki’s not only canon bi in the comics, but in the mcu too. I’ve read however many people lamenting that it’s only said, not shown, and honestly: same. But at the same time I’d like to raise awareness to the fact that it’s not probably the producer’s fault. I actually think they had to put lots of pressure on the studios to make him canon bi like in the comics, but in the end the last word is not theirs, it’s the higher ups at Disney’s. So yeah, was that just the bare fucking minimum? definitely. Should we be angry with the producers? hell naw.
Point is, Disney as a society thinks of the money they can get by producing media, and when there are still countries in the world in which being lgbt+ is a crime, that would not buy disney’s products knowing that there is actual rep in there, that would be bad for business. So they did what they could get away with, a.k.a. “a bit of both” dialogue, that can easily be dubbed as a different one in countries that don’t want the rep.
Personally I am disappointed but not surprised, yet at the same time I can see as the huge step that is having a disney character that is officially canonically lgbt+, and who knows, maybe that will pave the way for others.
However, I think that the only thing we can do is just settle with that. Why?
These were the most controversial points of the show (the other one is another load of bullshit cause you can’t go around yelling “The finale is unclear! Where did Renslayer go? The show sucks!” if a second season has been confirmed. It’s called a cliffhanger honey, look it up.), and most of them can only be solved definitely by waiting for s2, but on the whole the show is definitely not bad. Have you seen the photography? Have you seen the acting levels? The costume and make up? The fucking amazing Loki variants? It’s all really well done and the show as a whole does not deserve all the hate that it’s getting because of three unresolved points.
That being said, see ya’ll at season 2!

Loki S1E4 Spoilers
.
.
.
.
This is my most negative review so far, so if you really liked this episode, please dont read for your own benefit. No seriously, I drag this show in every possible way. Give no receipts, all bitching.
If you dont want to see your fav show dragged, please look away.
.
LMAO. It's official, this is one of the stupidest shows I've ever seen. Jfc.
Things I didn't appreciate about this episode:
1. Sylvie being a Variant because she was born a woman? Are you literally fucking kidding me? Jfc. I HATE this, for so many reasons. One because her being born a girl suggests that Loki cannot change his sex at will. This has always been a headcanon of mind, and you know what, since Loki does it in the comics, I feel its a valid one. Fucking hate this.
2. Loki's whole bullshit sequence with Sif. Not funny, annoying, and cruel. Much like Sif herself.
3. Mobius and Loki being friends??? Listen, I am a bit fond of the Lokius ship, sure. But they were never ever on those terms, what a fucking joke.
4. Sylvie and Loki's romantic relationship??? Really??? Really?? Just wow.
5. Loki and Mobius dying? Really, now just go fuck yourselves writers. Well, we know Loki is alive, we dont know what happened to Mobius. I'm wondering what those death sticks really do then. Still didn't appreciate the disrespect on both characters.
6. The Time Keepers being robots, all the ridiculous theatrics of it? It's so lame. Who the fuck decided Loki was going to be a comedy again? Yeah, thanks for nothing.
And these are just the points that made me angriest.
The series continues to be poorly written. Mostly in dialogue, reactions, and reasoning on the TVA's part. I dont get the impression that the TVA has ever been a threat and I'm surprised they lasted this long. Excuse me, but if little Sylvie could escape so easy, what the fuck was Loki doing?
On the discourse of this whole show, because I see it everywhere. Yeah, sorry, but Loki is hella ooc. And thats the tea on that. What I will say is, there's no way the show writers are doing it on purpose. They aren't actively trying to make Loki look this stupid. I'm pretty sure Loki has just been labeled as the "hero" at this point. So Loki doesn't get interesting characterization. No, I believe he's getting the Thor treatment of the first few movies.
They are banking on all their decent writing on Sylvie because she's the anti-villain? Because obviously they do not want an anti-villain as their main focus. Yeah, it's pure coincidence. That said, I dont know what this means for Sylvie at the end of the series. It's possible she'll just become a fan favorite. I already like her (and as far as I'm concerned, I'm sticking with my headcanon)
That said, I thought Sylvie's capture was so sad. Poor child. That did give brownie points for her being a Loki, but not enough where I'd change my headcanon, because this show has way too many things I dislike.
Loki continues to be useless. He literally just has stuff happen to him and doesn't move the plot forward much at all. I guess the writers didn't have a chance to learn that your protagonist is supposed to be proactive for them to be interesting? Weird, for something as high budget as Marvel, you would think they would care about their writers having some proper experience.
The Lokis are freaking ugly. What the fuck is up with this low budget ass show? This isn't the first time I've hated the costuming in a Marvel show, see: Falcon. The only decent one so far was Wanda's.
I thought this whole episode was a joke and I was waiting for the punch line the entire time.
Lastly, because I dont want to be unfair. These are all the points I liked:
1. Hunter B-15. So happy she's on the Lokis side. I love her. I've finally come around to loving her completely. She was one of the good points of this episode.
2. It was nice to see Asgard again, and little Sylvie was adorable. She was so happy. I'm glad to get another glimpse at Loki's life. And this makes sense of why she's so vague about everything. She doesn't have a life in Asgard.
3. Loki's hair in one scene was particularly gorgeous. I'll be going back in to screenshot it. 👀
4. Loki and Sylvie fighting, both of them fighting equally just as well.
5. I still like the idea of all the Lokis.
....and yeah, that's it. Most of these are just little details, like, visually speaking most of the production is nice (Except for the Time Keepers, the Loki's costumes)
This wasn't a great one, folks. And I imagine the rest of the series will be the same. Because this is a comedy after all. And once again, I feel thats where we go wrong. Because Loki was never supposed to be a comedy, nor was Thor. Yet recently they've made comedies of both of them.
That said, wow, I am okay now, yeah, this series is just bad, hard to even extrapolate anything, but now I realize they're not doing this maliciously. imo, they just have very bad takes. I maintain that if Tom was completely in charge, Loki would be as we remembered him, but frankly, I think it has more to do with this series being a comedy than anything. Let's hope Doctor Strange isn't a comedy, shall we?
PS. This show is really making me come to terms with throwing away canon, every single episode. So that's definitely a plus.

Think I’ll review some more MCU movies.
Review - Thor
Thor is, in its essence, three different movies, and the good parts of it don’t fit tigether very well. The parts are:
1) An epic drama about Thor, God of Thunder and Prince of Asgard, learning from his mistakes, falling in love, and growing into the hero he’s meant to be. This part doesn’t land. Most of the dramatic scenes feel overblown and artifical; the romance is too new and too shallow to have the weight the plot tries to give it; there’s too much exposition.
2) A fish-out-of-water comedy about Thor on Earth. This works a good deal better and plays to Hemsworth’s strengths as a conedic actor (so ething the franchise decided to pick up and run with in Thor 3, after their second attempt at epic drama in Thor 2 turned out badly). “Another!” and the pet store scene were highlights of the movie for me. It’s also why Darcy is absolute gold.
3) The Tragedy of Loki Laufeyson, which is also good, and probably the most compelling part of the movie for me. I think Loki’s motivations and actions throughout the film are coherent - not necessarily rational, but coherent - and create a compelling character arc.
At first, he just wants to make trouble and stall Thor’s elevation for the present (and commits treason in order to do so); he quite clearly baits him into attacking Jotunheim out of the desire to get him into trouble, but the look on his face when Thir is exiled to Earth suggests he didn’t expect Odin’s reaction to be quite that dramatic. After that, what he wants above all is to take the opportunity provided by Thor’s absence to prove himself to his father. (I always thought the line “Only one of you can rule Asgard, but both of you were born to be kings” expressed - rather clearly - that Odin’s hope had been that Loki would eventually succeed to the rule of Jotunheim, enabling the two kingdoms to live in peace; but that’s clearly not how Loki took it.) His betrayal of Laufey is one of the great moments of the movie because, on your first viewing, you genuinely don’t know which side he’s on; I think I cheered out loud at “And you were killed by the son of Odin.”
Loki’s problems come with events on Earth. First, he decides to stick the knife in and twist it by telling Thor that Frigga is dead, trying to make even more sure that Thor won’t attempt or be able to return. Now that he has his chance, he’s not at all willing to risk a rival, and that overwhelms any affection he has for his brother. This is not really necessary, and it’s the seed of everything that goes wrong for Loki through the rest of the movie.
He can’t let the Warrior Three go to Earth because - even if Thor can’t return - if they come back and recount that he lied to Thor about Frigga’s death, it will make him look bad. Then they go anyway and find Thor, and he can’t think of anything else to do but try to kill them. They they and Thor survive, and defeat the Destroyer, and return to Asgard…
…And now it’s all going to come out, that he attempted to kill them, so now he has to do something really big to prove himself to Asgard, bigger than before, something to make his loyalty unquestionable - so he decides to destroy Jotunheim. Which isn’t, obviously, something that either Thor or Odin want. And Loki’s spent the latter part of the movie running around frantically burning bridges in an attempt to earn the familial love that he already had.
That - not Loki being some mistreated little woobie - is the tragedy to me. (And I think it’s what the first episode of the Loki show has him finally figure out.) It’s not the source of his evil actions - the fact that he considers vast numbers of people outside his immediate family, and sometimes within it, to be acceptable casualties in his capaign for validation is the root problem - but it’s the motivation.

Review: Loki
It was actually really surprisingly enjoyable.
I was very skeptical - I mean, in general, because I have lost all trust or faith in the MCU, but more so due to the “buddy cop time travel” thing that just sounds like the weirdest take you could go with for Loki.
And yet here I am, thinking that I would have absolutely watched a full 22 episode order of buddy cop time travel shenanigans. That was the best part of this show.
Owen Wilson was amazing in this, it was such a refreshing delight to see him again and see him in this quite frankly different role. I also thought that his chemistry with Tom worked well, they played off each other so easily and quickly established a bond between each other that made the dynamic between their characters work. That’s the kind of energy you want from a buddy cop duo (and probably why Owen was cast; the man just works in these kind of situations, you can pair him up with anyone and it’s smooth sailing).
And it wasn’t just Owen. Admittedly, the start was a little slow and very... parodic in its ridiculousness, how they processed Loki and all, but once the buddy cop dynamic was established and Loki got into this concept, got really engaged in it and started being a total nerd who got invested in investigating this, Tom really shone for me. His excitement alone was really contageous and made that even more enjoyable.
Episodes 1 and 2 were peak of this show for me, with that and them in the focus.
And then they introduced Sylvie and... honestly, she was the worst part of the show for me. The character itself was incredibly bland, the show did more to make me grow attached to minor characters who only got letters and numbers instead of names than it did to endear me to her and the forced heteronormativity wasn’t helping either.
And no, not just heteronormativity because m/f, because m/f romances can work too and can be engagingly written. But heteronormativity is set of short-hand jerk-off ways that they expect this to be accepted as a romance because it was A Boy and A Girl looking at each other for multiple seconds, suddenly there’s something romantic going on there, but just in case you haven’t caught on yet, another character will explicitly spill it out because they know they haven’t done enough to establish anything at that point. Relying on the fact that people expect the Leading Lady and the Leading Man to end up together. And that just falls flat to me as a person who’s been tired of this narrative since the 90s.
Moving on. Meeting the bunch of alternate Lokis was a lot of fun, seeing them all interact with each other was very interesting. I would have liked to learn more about them - via flashbacks, not just dialogue. Instead of just having them tell stories, I would have liked to actually see these other worlds, even just in brief scenes. Also the alligator was really, really cute.
One very much expected major gripe was the... queerness. It was about what I expected from Disney, to be honest. One handwavey comment about Loki liking men and women alike and that’s it, we move on from that. His own startledness about a female Loki and every other dude Loki’s reaction to the notion just driving home the lack of genderfluid Loki. This show, a show centered around Loki, had been Disney’s opportunity to give some genuine queer rep, to make up for past easy to cut bullshit. But I see they still don’t care and I’m not even surprised. Just tired.
Lastly, I really think they projected the whole Enchantress thing a bit too... much. She’s blonde and wearing green and is an Asgardian with barely any memories of her past on Asgard in a way that quite frankly left open for debate whether she even was a Loki, that’d have been enough for season 1. But nearly every fifth line from her included the word “ENCHANT”, spoken as forcefully as physically possible to really make sure the audience can hear that this word is special when coming from her. I’m going to guess that she turns out to not be a Loki at all and just be an, I don’t know, Amora without proper memories or whose memories got mixed up with Loki’s considering Sylvie’s done memory-reading and mind-meddling all throughout this season, but whatever they’re going to do with it, it’s going to end with her becoming a version of the Enchantress. (Still, with how hard they pushed the Loki/Sylvie agenda, there is just no way Sylvie is actually Loki. Disney ain’t kinky enough to make selfcest canon.)
So, that went off-track a little bit. Anyway, not a bad show, wish it would have dialed back on the romance like way back, should have focused far more on the time buddy cop angle, could have done with more diving into the other Lokis.

Spoiler Free Review of Loki Episode 2
Wow. So the beginning of this episode gave me a little whiplash. Loki seems to be acting differently than he ever has, but... the more I think about it, is it ACTUALLY different? We never really knew much about Loki or how he was before the events of Thor 1 excluding the sparse, brief recollections we were given here and there from other people. This personality COULD be potentially truer than I first thought.
And while I felt a little rocky about the first half, the ending concluded things well for me and helped ease my mind about what happened at the beginning. We get to see Loki acting badass and we get to see some more emotions as well.
That ending though. Wow. Even though I saw that clip in the trailers and promos, I still didn’t exactly expect it to end that way. And on a cliff hanger no less! Now I have to wait another week (good job Marvel with viewer retention)!
Some suspicions and theories of mine were confirmed, others were either denied or left with uncertainty. In the end, this episode was still very enjoyable if not a bit of a whiplash like experience at first. Looking forward to episode 3!
