And the completed version of the Yunmeng siblings together at Lotus Pier!

Yeah… still going with these watercolor landscapes.  And fan art for The Untamed in general.

Watercolor and gouache on 5x7″ watercolor paper.  My figures are small again (1 cm tall).  If you’d like to see the layering process I go through, I’m making and posting process gifs.

The Untamed ep11, collage 10: Archery practise

image

JC: It already flew that far. Can you still hit it?

WWX: Guess.

image

Disciple: Awesome! Senior Brother is amazing! Even after he goes to Qishan, he doesn’t need to be scared of the Wen Clan. Teach them a lesson. Let them know that the Jiang Clan isn’t easily bullied.

image

JC: The sun won’t be as easy to shoot at, right?

WWX: It’s just doing what others think is impossible.

Viki subs.

The foreshadowing here… And this being one of the rare scenes (and the last scene) where we see JC so relaxed and happy. Uh.

The Untamed ep11, collage 7: Letters

Bonus:

WWX: On our way back from Qinghe, I’ve been sending letters to Lan Zhan but I haven’t received any responses. … I’m scared that the Cloud Recessess might have…

***

JFM: When you two were in Qinghe, Clan Leader Lan sent another message. The letter says, due to the Yin Metal, the Wen Clan already sees the Lan Clan as an enemy.

JFM: Ah Cheng, Ah Xian. It can’t be delayed anymore. The both of you will leave in three days. …

WWX: Uncle Jiang, I understand. Right now, the situation is beyond us. We will take care of ourselves after going to Qishan. As for Wen Chao, the most he can do is hit us if he’s unhappy. He won’t dare to kill.

The Untamed ep11, collage 4: Mother

YZY: In a few days, when they get to Qishan, we dont know if theyll be given food. They might as well starve for a few days so they’ll get used to it.

***

YZY: Such arrogant words. What does it mean by a direct disciple? It means that between Ah Cheng and Ah Li, one of them must go.

JC: Mother, don’t be angry. I’ll go.

YZY: Of course you’ll go! Were you thinking of sending your sister instead? Look at her, still happily peeling the lotus seeds. Ah Li, stop peeling it! Who are you peeling it for? You’re the master. Not someone’s servant! What? Did I say something wrong? Servant. You don’t want to hear this word? Jiang Fengmian, let me ask you. Are you going to make him go too?

JFM: That depends on him. If he wants to, he can.

WWX: I’ll go.

JC: Mother

YZY: Why are you calling me? … You’re an idiot. Let me tell you. You won’t ever beat the person next to you, whether in cultivation or monster hunting. … How many times have I told you to stop fooling around with him? Yet, you still speak up for him. How did I give birth to a son like you?

image

(Viki subs.) Yu Ziyuan really has been cultivating some serious resentful energy! Well, Jiang Cheng stopped speaking up for Wei Wuxian, eventually. She would have been so proud. But it needs to be said that she is right here about the Qishan Wen and their intents (and is worried about JC’s safety, even if she has a weird way of showing it).

A tribute to this character who walked a path of high expectations to exceed, extreme complications, misunderstandings, and watching the people he loved most be taken from him by the unfairly, cruel world they all lived in. I love Jiang Cheng so much!! 💜💜🗡 - 2020.11.15

The Untamed ep11, collage 3: Blame

image

JC: Say, since we left without permission this time, will Father punish us?

WWX: From what I see, we’re most likely getting a spanking.

JC: It’s your fault for running away for no reason. Or else, I wouldn’t have gone out to find you.

WWX: Blame me. Blame me. I’ll take all the hits when we get spanked later.

JC: Give me a break. I have been with you since I was young, when did I ever get fewer spankings? Not sure what sins I’ve committed in my previous life to be stuck with you as a brother.

WWX: It’s been hard on you. Don’t be mad. In our next lives, let’s be brothers again. Okay?

JC: Go away.

Bonus:

image

WWX: Senior Sister must have missed me. You’ve lost a lot of weight.

JC: You’re so shameful.

Viki subs as usual.

Work in Progress gif of the Jiang Cheng character study.  I always find it funny that what I sketch first, I usually ink last…  Layers include watercolor, metallic gouache, and black ink on watercolor paper.  You can see the finished work here.

Thank you so so much to the amazing and talented @ober-affen-geil for turning my wip cell phone pics into a gif!!  This would have been impossible without you!

Sequence description after the cut.

Gusu Lan Sect residence

The residence of the Lan Sect was located in a remote mountain outside the city of Gusu.

Mist constantly enveloped the white walls and black roofs of the buildings, which stretched along the picturesque garden of the waterside pavilion, as if it was an ocean of clouds in the immortal realm. At dawn, the first rays of the morning sun shone through the hazy billows of mist that drifted far and wide, perfectly complementing its name, the “Cloud Recesses”.

The furniture in the jingshi was extremely simplistic, without any unnecessary belongings. On the accordion partition, there was a painting of drifting clouds, floating and morphing with its fine brushwork. A guqin table lay horizontally in front of it. On top of the three-legged incense stand in the corner, a hollowed out incense burner made of white jade emitted soft, lingering smoke, filling the whole room with the chilling scent of sandalwood.

— Mo Dao Zu Shi, chapter 11

Yunmeng Jiang Sect residence

Yunmeng was abundant in lakes. The YunmengJiang Sect’s “Lotus Pier”, the residence of the greatest sect here, was built near a lake as well.

Starting from the end of Lotus Pier, after just a while of paddling, one would see a large lotus lake, more than a hundred miles in length. The wide, verdant leaves and the smooth, pink blossoms brushed shoulders against one another. As a breeze blew over, the petals and the leaves swayed as if they nodded their heads. Amid the purity and grace, one could also feel a naive sense of clumsiness.

Lotus Pier wasn’t as other-worldly as the other sects’ residences, shutting their doors and refusing to let commoners come within a boundary miles away. The docks right in front of Lotus Pier’s entrance often bustled with vendors selling seed pods, water chestnuts and all kinds of pastries. Runny-nosed children from households nearby could also sneak into Lotus Pier’s fields to watch the cultivators practice their swords. They wouldn’t be scolded even if they got caught, either. They could sometimes even play around with the Jiang Sect’s disciples.

Jiang Yanli: You’re not a fighter, and I love you too much to watch you die. And you will die. Horribly. Mutilated. Crying blood.

Wei Wuxian: Okay.

Jiang Yanli: Having soiled yourself with people trying to cut off your head. People pointing and laughing, gloating on the battlefield. It’s going to be hideous.

Wei Wuxian, slowing losing his nerve: Okay.

Jiang Yanli: It can be fun. But not for you.

Wei Wuxian: Got it.

Jiang Yanli: I can’t be part of that. It’ll destroy me.

Wei Wuxian: My darling sister, you worry too much. I’ll be fine…Yes, perhaps a bit less confident after your very charmingly graphic description…but believe me, I’ll be fine.

Character study of Jiang Cheng.  Tried to include a few symbols important to him: the shape of the lotus throne, a landscape from Lotus Pier, Zidian, Sandu and a golden core.  And, of course, the color purple.

Watercolor, gouache, and ink on 7x10″ watercolor paper (took a two page spread for this one–you can see the stitches in the center of the lotus).
