Monday’s Photography Inspiration – Louis Boutan
Louis Boutan was a French biologist and a pioneer in the field of underwater photography that would be unmatched by anyone else for decades. He was born in Versailles and studied biology and natural history at the University of Paris where he became a lab assistant at the age of 20. In 1880, he was named deputy head by the Ministry of Public Education just one year later and assigned to organise…

Anemone, Banyuls Bay, South East France, 1893. Photographie sous-marine by Louis Boutan. "Louis Boutan, one of the pioneers of underwater photography, was a french biologist and naturalist born in 1859. He studied the life of molluscs and found that it was necessary to document what was underwater. His first dive took place in 1886, and he enjoyed it so much that he said: "It was all so beautiful and so strange that I often found Ymyself longing to be able to sketch or paint the scene, so as to be able to bring up to the surface a souvenir of what I had seen below." Boutan wondered: "Is an underwater environment unsuitable for taking good photographs?" He started experimenting with pressure and light, and designed the first apparatus with the help of his brother. It was a detective camera in a waterproof copper box. He found the results "uniformly beclouded" and kept trying and trying. After solving one last problem, the light, he finally succeeded. It took three men to move the final underwater camera and had to be lowered using a pulley. In 1899, he submerged a sign that read "Photographie Sous-Marine", and the image he took was sharp and clear. The equipment weighed 1100 pounds (500kg)." https://www.instagram.com/p/Cou9iR5tcY3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Did Photography Fuel Our Obsession With What Lies Beneath the Waves?
Did Photography Fuel Our Obsession With What Lies Beneath the Waves?
Photo Illustration by The Daily Beast/Louis Boutan/Public Domain The underwater world was almost entirely unknown to the public in the nineteenth century. Once filmmakers developed the technology to film below the ocean’s surface, starting with Williamson’s photosphere pioneered in 1914, they discovered immense potential but also a challenge. While filmmakers could shape underwater imagery…
