Machiavelli the cat is Disney. A hypothesis:
Before you continue reading this, do yourself a favor and make sure you are familiar with the term Machiavellian or know at least basics about Niccolo Machiavelli the person, and his most famous work, Il Principe.
Okay, back to topic: Imagine that you work for Machiavelli pictures™️ and want to make a movie that essentially deals about being a member of a closeted minority (doesn’t really matter which you choose, could be LGBTQ+, ethnicity, religion,…) Of course, Machiavelli will HATE the guts out of it. It is a minefield. You literally risk your movie being outright banned in half of the world and boycotted by some half of the audiences elsewhere. And Machiavelli cares only about them Dollars. Machiavelli will HATE you.
So, you throw Machiavelli a fish.
The closeted minority are aquatic folks, mermaids or sea monsters. Any similarities to any actual closeted minorities, living or dead, is of course purely coincidental and unintended.
And suddenly, Machiavelli tolerates you.
But you are still somewhat crabby about it, so you put a cranky cat in your movie, and you name it after the 15. century thinker whose name is synonymous to «using clever lies and tricks in order to get or achieve something».
It's not ideal, but hey, it's better than not having a movie made at all. How very......... Machiavellian..... of you.........
And yeah, you put in a couple of love songs in a foreign language, in one case literally about loving a handsome chap and going Porta Rossa to buy a wedding ring??? But that’s because they just fit in so well and you just cannot find good substitutes as there is a shortage of Italian songs and operas....
