Fiat Lux: Illuminating our Common Home from Minds Over Matter on Vimeo.

Obscura was chosen by the Vatican’s Pontifical Council to create a contemporary artistic interpretation of Pope Francis’ Encyclical, “Laudato Si.” The large-scale architectural projection show entitled: “Fiat Lux: Illuminating Our Common Home” was presented as a gift to Pope Francis to celebrate the opening of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy. It was the first time that art has ever been projected onto St. Peter’s Basilica.

“Laudato Si,” means “Praise be to you,” a phrase commonly used by Saint Francis, the patron saint of animals and ecology and Pope Francis’ namesake. In writing his impassioned plea for greater focus on the environment, Pope Francis cited areas of particular concern: pollution and climate change, the lack of clean water for much of the world’s population, and loss of biodiversity.

To bring the pope’s message to life, Obscura created an unprecedented 60-minute show featuring powerful images of humanity diversity and natural beauty from world-renowned photographers and curated by Travis Threlkel and Academy Award-winning filmmaker Louie Psyhoyos (The Cove). Using 21st century art and 50 high lumen projectors, the show was presented as a visual symphony in seven movements. A crowd of over 200,000 people gathered to watch the show live in the Piazza San Pietro, while 4 million watched via live stream video. Media coverage generated another billion global impressions.

Fiat Lux: Illuminating our Common Home featured the work of some of the world’s most noted humanistic and nature photographers and filmmakers including Sebastiao Salgado and Amazonas Images, Joel Sartore and his Photo Ark series, Yann Arthus Bertrand, David Doubilet, Ron Fricke, Howard Hall, Shawn Heinrichs, Greg Huglin, Chris Jordan, Mark Magidson, Steve McCurry, Louie Schwartzberg and Paul Nicklen. Funding provide by the Li Ka Shing Foundation and Vulcan Productions. Natural sound effects provided by Macaulay Library at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology

@passeurdaurore Thank you for all of this! I don’t know where to start. The Baudelaire poem was great and I wish my french was good enough to actually appreciate it properly, because all I can do is understand a sort general meaning and pronounce things with a norwegian accent. I also loved the Géricault photo with the man holding an umbrella over a cello, and Sebastiao Salgado’s photo’s were breathtaking. wow. I added the book to my to-read list on goodreads and one of David Gemmel’s books. Thank you again I had so much fun going through these!! :)

Andrew Salgado

Andrew Salgado is a London based artist whose work I have become enthusiastic about since first viewing it a few years ago. He received a BFA from the University of BC in Vancouver in 2005 and graduated with an MFA from Chelsea College of Arts in 2009. Being openly gay, he deals with the questioning of the masculinity in his painting of the male figure that often highlights a fine line between chaos and concern. His striking balance between abstraction and figuration strives to capture psychology more than likeness, with which he states “I am concerned with the political and social and psychological aspects that operate extra-dietetically to my subject (that is the content) and then in terms of the form of the work.”

His painting often features a subject as the main focal point surrounded by sporadic brushstrokes which evoke a mood that suggests both aggression and vulnerability. Homophobia is still a current state of mind of some people in modern day society and in 2008, Salgado and his partner were victims of an attack. The feelings portrayed within his pieces are probably those of which were elicited by the act of violence committed against him. The controlled chaos within his figurative paintings contributes to the expressive potential of colour which overall creates a sense of frailty and potency. His piece ‘ART ELYSEES’ (first image on the right), exhibits sporadic brushstrokes which are almost pointillist in nature, and just seem to be perfectly placed. Male hands are a communication object that Salgado often uses in his work, normally suppressing the subject and controlling them as such by showing dominating power; although the observer is unaware of who’s hands these are. These could symbolise the hand of ‘society’ try to condition us into sticking within the boundaries and becoming the ‘ideal’ person- no same-sex relationships, no transsexual or transgender transitions etc. Salgado, since his being a victim of hate crime, uses his art as a political platform where he can communicate to get the message across about the remaining hate against homosexuality. He states ‘For a while, my art became kind of aggressive, kind of scary and violent.’ which proves how the artist's own emotional state can be altered and portrayed in their work depending on the experience. 

Salgado’s work has inspired me to be more experimental with my use of brushstrokes, texture, and colour. He has been hailed as one of the most promising young figurative painters of today with 11 sold out exhibitions and the fact that he is constantly being endorsed by top end critics including Tony Godfrey, Edward Lucie-Smith, and Saatchi.

For a long time, my relationship with drawing was a complicated one. Even though it’s something I’d do relatively well since I was a child, I would find little or no real enjoyment in the process, especially since I started to do this for a living. It all became mechanical, as though I was merely reproducing images, never really creating myself. If a drawing would take me more than one sitting, I would simply put it away and start a simpler one, whilst the sheets of unfinished works would continue to pile up along with my ever-growing frustration. All of this changed only very recently, with the past three drawings I’ve made, including this very portrait. It changed when I learned to fall in love with both the process and the subject, and made it completely personal – from conception to varnishing, I devoted myself completely, not because I had to, but because I wanted to, because it meant something to me other than money or recognition. It's something that is mine, all mine. It's honest. All the time and labour that goes into it, from the first layer to the last, all the time spent obsessing over every single detail, rendering every fold and every hairline; it all went from boring and unimaginable to pleasantly satisfying when I learned to love it, and when made it mine. Right now things feel very uncertain – it is far easier to make a living when you do things for others, when you do what others want you to, rather than what you want your own. Still, I’m too stubborn not to try. Even when people don’t really understand what I’m doing, or when I don’t really know how to profit over it, I want to continue to create things that are true of me, and I am jumping headfirst on this vision of being able not only to stand for self-expression, but to actually make a living out of something I love, and being able to truly love what I do. If this comes to be, I’ll be the happiest human alive.
