This is a so-called Ci Corc. - a cork sea dog from Wales, 19th century

This small cork animal was made of bar remains, as was often found in a Victorian pub. A sailor who was about to embark on a long voyage would make himself a little dog like this to distract himself from the fact of the voyage and to make a little lucky charm. Cork floats and was therefore considered a good luck charm against drowning and a good luck charm for a safe journey home.

If they saw a Sailor tinkering in the pub, it was a sign for the others to give him a farewell drink and wish him good luck. When the men came back, these little charms were given to a child to play with, because the luck was now used up and a new one had to be made for the next trip.

I was Miraculous Ladybug and I was beating the lights out of some villain lady, in a grocery store, using some bagged produce. I woke up right before murdering her with my Lucky Charm (the thing from the show, not the cereals).

The main things I didn’t like with the original design was the weird placement of the yo-yo, the many different spot sizes, and the color palette.

Scarabella redesign.

The bright red was not good against alyas skin tone so I made the red a more cool more muted red.

I gave the suit more segmented parts to be more insect like and I removed the weird little shorts.

Her hair gave me the most problems since I could not figure out what I wanted to do with it. I didn’t want the scarf because the spots so close to the spots of the mask was too busy and they were also different sizes from the spots on the mask and the spots on the suit. I tried making it black but didn’t like it so I just got rid of it and gave her two low buns.

Something I felt was missing from scarabella design was blue. Ladybug had blue eyes and blue hair that is in a shape resembling wings. I wanted to give scarabella some wing details so I have her some wings on her feet and some hair accessories that look like a ladybug in flight.

Sternentreue | Oath / Promise

Yes, I have finally done it, I have named one of my creative ourbursts after the German name of Oathkeeper (which I LOVE because it's such a great, poetic name IMO - it roughly translates to loyalty to the stars, which can be read as staying true to a chosen destiny), SoKai shipping lifegoal accomplished, let's move on.

Also, it's still Inktober, but I might do a colored version of this once it's over. As always, I'm using a prompt from my own prompt list (feel free to use it for your Inktober project as well, and please tag me if you do, I'd love to see it!!).

Summary: Guys on his sports teams seemed to need their rituals or tokens, but Steve was always against good luck charms. That is until Dustin insists on one and Eddie obliges him with another.

"I don't want to buy into a 'charm,'" Steve frustratedly told the locker room. "Because when something does happen to your girlfriend's scrunchie," he said, pointing at John. "Or your lucky sock," he added, eyeing Brian's, unwashed, on his left foot. "Or Dave's locker shrine to Larry Bird. Seriously?" Steve shook his head. "I'm not gonna rely on a good luck charm and neither should you guys. Believe in yourselves more than these superstitions."

But that was the case for his teammates, for sports. After the Upside Down everyone involved seemed to need comfort. Steve started to notice a certain action figure, Walkman, or flashlight, each on one of his kids at all times. It began to make sense, having something to cling to when the lights flickered.

Dustin had Eddie's pick. Mr. Munson had told him to keep it when they thought Eddie was dead and gone. Even after he recovered, Eddie let Dustin hang on to it 'for luck.'

Dustin had forced the pick on Steve, the eve of the final battle.

Eddie accompanied Steve down to his entry point. Neither seemed to want to say goodbye or voice all that was unspoken between them. Their friendship was edged in what Steve could only describe as a tension. He knew his reasons. Steve thrummed with a hidden desire to see if they could be something more. It'd been building since the boathouse. He fiddled with the pick around his neck and noticed the way Eddie's eyes darkened, fixed on the necklace.

"Oh, yeah. Dustin insisted. Something about me needing its luck for this one."

Steve looked away and back up to see something in Eddie snap. His hands shot out; one gripped Steve's waist and the other pressed the pick against his chest. "It belongs here then. Please, don't ever take it off."

Steve's heart raced. All the air had left his lungs in Eddie's firm grasp. But he had to know, had to ask. "Why," he managed.

Eddie attempted a shrug, and bit his bottom lip nervously. "What if Dustin's right." He failed at sounding any less serious. "No reason to risk bad luck. It belongs around your neck. Please, keep it," Eddie urged.

Steve reached up and held Eddie's face in his hands. He stroked Eddie's cheek with his thumb, watching him suck in a sharp breath at the touch. "Any other reason Ed's? Now's the time to let me know."

His eyes seemed to plead with him, but Steve still didn't know what the other man was begging for. He could only guess and that wasn't enough anymore. Not before they parted to fight, unsure of the outcome.

Steve changed tactics. He cocked his head to the side and let himself stare at Eddie's mouth. "Y'know if you want me to stay lucky, they say kisses are good for that too."

Eddie's cheeks flushed crimson red, and he leaned in. Their already close faces swiftly met in a kiss less rushed than Steve anticipated. In fact, Eddie pressed slowly, sweetly, his tongue swiping the bottom of Steve's lip opening his mouth for more.

Steve lost sense of time until his walkie crackled.

"We good to go guys? Over."

Eddie answered for him. "Yeah. Just made sure Steve had the right good luck charm."

I loved this moment when she realised sometimes all you have is yourself - SHE'S the key to solving this problem. It reminded me of Emotion, when she realised Felix himself was the key to fixing the damage he'd done.

And when she says the magic powers aren't what changed her, she just changed her way of looking at the world...that was such a strong moment for her.

Alya: "Tikki, Spots on!" 🐞

If you asked me which ladybug holder I liked the most, it's Scarabella. Mainly because her look stands out more from Ladybug and Mister Bug. However, that didn't mean I wouldn't redesign her, haha !🐞

One thing that REALLY bugged me with the ladybug miraculous (plus the bee and butterfly) is there are NO wings included! Since Scarabella has this tail coat on her, I saw that as an advantage to incorporate the ladybug wings there. I made them bright blue to stand out (ladybug wings are actually clear, but that would be hard to see, so that's why I made it blue instead). I found that adding the blue wings on the collar, and the cuffs of her gloves and boots, as well as the soles of the shoe, really make the outfit pop out more with the colors contrast eachother.💙

Her headband stayed, but I got rid of the spots and darkened the red more to further contrast her from Ladybug and Mister Bug. I also minimized the spots since the ladybug holders all have the same pattern of spots.🐞

For the hair, I felt that the current hairstyle works for Alya but not Scarbella, so I changed it.

Also, since we know Alya is French Martinique-Creole, an ethnicity of mixed Europe and African ancestry, I tried to include some fashionable details from that. Her mask is actually inspired by traditional African masks. I searched up and gave her red beads on her hair since there are some African hairstyles with beads included.

I am really forward to doing a fusion of this with Rena Rouge🦊 (after I redesign her too first, heh 😅).

Sternentreue (Colored Version)

"It's a promise..."

I said I was going to color this one, wasn't I? 😊 So here it is, in all it's colorful glory (and I made the Inktober version my new blog header). I tried how the more cel-ish shading I did for some of my inktober pieces works with color, and I'm overall extremely happy how it turned out!!

For all those who haven't seen the original (and are too lazy for following the link), Sternentreue is the German name of Oathkeeper / Yakusoku no Omamori. I love this name because there is something really poetic about it: literally translated it means loyalty of / to the stars, but more figuratively, it can be interpreted as staying true to one's (chosen) destiny / promise.
