Fic Ask Game: Favorite Fic Lines

Hello people. So, I got some sudden inspiration for this little game, which goes hand in hand with the KinnPorsche Fanfic Comment Event a little bit, in my opinion: Share the lines of fics that have brought a big emotional reaction out of you. It can be anything, from sadness to happiness to horniness to anything in between. Lines that have stayed with you, no matter how long ago you read the fic. I believe our writers deserve a little praise in these trying times, don't you think? So, for me, some of them are the following: 1) "The rib hurts so much more now that someone else knows about it." - drank every scar, by @ginnymoonbeam - Tbh, I'd have to put the whole fic in here, but this is the line I tend to think of whenever the fic comes to mind. Rereading it now to find the line made my eyes water, it's so fucking visceral and perfect and I love it so much. Once again, thank you so, SO much for writing it and sharing it with the world ❤️ 2) "Vegas’ violence is unpredictable, painfully personal, and utterly, tragically ineffectual.

Pete forgives him all of it." - Civil Hands, by @ameliarating - I can't count the times I went feral over both Civil Hands and Deep Dive. As a fan of Pete, both of those fics mean the world to me, and this specific line has been on my mind since the moment I read it. I love how it showcases Vegas' effect on Pete's worldview, how Vegas made him break his own rules, and how he came to accept it, because it's him. Incredible writing, I love it so fucking much❤️ 3) "He’d rather be marked as disposable, he’d realized, than erased as invisible.

There was something bitter about realizing that he’d been both." - Once You Are Real, by @veliseraptor - Lise chose this for the summary and it's such a perfect choice. I think it's the reason I chose to read the fic in the first place. I am very emotional when it comes to the concept of Pete finding out he was forgotten, and this fic does an amazing job with it. I keep returning to it a lot, I love it to death. Painful in it's brilliance, I can't recommend it enough. 4) "“I don’t know,” Pete said unsteadily. “I don’t know. How could I know what that feels like? I’m not that kind of person.” He pulled against Vegas’s grip, and got nowhere. “You make my teeth ache. You make the world bright, like it’s real. It hurts. It’s hurt since I met you, but that means I can never forget I’m alive." - even the clearest water, by @luckydicekirby What a fic. The concept, the lines, the execution, it all deserves praise until the end of time. Pete's answer to Vegas' "Do you love me?" will always remain in my head as one of the best things VP-related I've ever read and ever will read in my life. I loved this so fucking much, I will never get over it ❤️ 5) "“And now you have nothing,” Kinn says. “As I said, a dumb move.”

“Wrong again,” Vegas says. “I now have something you don’t.”

“Oh?” Kinn doesn’t hide the way he rolls his eyes. “Massive hospital bills? Bed sores?”

“Happiness.”" - Your Power Over Me, by @wisteria-daydreamer - A very special shout out to my lovely friend who's written one of my favorite Kinn&Vegas fics I've ever had the pleasure to read. When this line came, I literally gasped out loud, it left me speechless. The way Kinn's POV is written was marvelous and the whole conversation he had with Vegas was incredible. Check it out if you crave some good Kinn&Vegas fics, it's very, very good. Disclaimer: I have so many fics and authors I love and I've made that clear to both them and my followers in the past. My brain could only handle doing 5 for this, but I absolutely have more than 5 that I'm obsessed with. Maybe one day I'll do a Part 2, I'll see how it goes in the future. Jason was nearly at his breaking point - after a solid couple of years of only interacting with people on an as needed basis (and usually several feet away with a gun at that) his newfound status as Gotham’s new local freak show was starting to wear on his goddamn nerves.  Vicki Vale, the worst journalist known to man, meta, and everything in between, had published a splashy front page exposé in the Gotham Gazette -  JASON TODD ALIVE! WAYNELET DODGES FAMILY BUSINESS BY FAKING DEATH?  Usually, there was no evidence to back up any nebulous claim of Jason being alive - people had been posting cryptid style trash about him in their rags since before he had even actually come back to life, and far after. It’s not like Jason was out and about as a civilian often enough to be spotted and photographed - he rarely left any of his apartments except on Red Hood business, which meant he was constantly in his helmet or mask. It’s not like he had a social life to upkeep in between running a criminal empire. Except. Well except it had been Dick’s birthday. And like, fuck Dick honestly because he’s 0-2 on “big secrets being revealed because of his dumb and also large ass” but it was his birthday, and Jason had been enjoying their latest detente because it meant people weren’t crawling up his fire escape at 5am to make puppy dog eyes at him about how he was breaking poor ol Alfie’s heart, but it also meant that he needed to get something for him and so he had been milling about downtown Gotham with Tim in broad daylight and apparently Vicki Vale had gotten pictures of them arguing while staring into a Build A Bear workshop like absolute fucking goobers.

speaking of ficbinding, here’s my friend’s and mine first attempts (i think it was her first attempt too?) at it, featuring my cat who really wanted to be at the photoshoot. the fic is i'll be the blood if you'll be the bones by @luckydicekirby (one of my favorite vp fics) and the black version was done by my dear friend (for me 🥺) and the green one was made by me

the layout was done by my friend as well, i then printed out two copies and then we binded them. but i can tell after getting a taste of it i immediately got obsessed with the idea of making more, so i already tried making my layout with another fic (this time it’s for the same friend, but tss, she doesn’t know yet). and then i wanna make more more and more..

no seriously, i wanted to try ficbinding for the last two years, and recently i got the idea of making little brochures of all my favorite fics (or maybe actually putting them all together into a bigger book? i would have to start smaller tho to learn how to do it) to keep them at my side (again, a very timely idea if ao3 is actually blocked for good here), but i don’t know the etiquette so i maybe will have to go to all the authors and ask questions.. but if anyone actually knows what’s the deal with ficbinding and that it’s acceptable to do it without asking first, feel free to tell me i’m insane

The F@tT Fic Marathon: 1-20

Last night, instead of forcing myself through more homework reading that I didn't particularly care for, I decided to undertake a very stupid quest that will make me happy. I'm gonna (attempt) to read every single work in the Friends at the Table ao3 tag, in publishing order! and document it here so that I can recommend the hidden gems from deep in the archive to my fatt mutuals

So far I have read the twenty fics listed above. Nearly all of them are of a quality worth reading, but I have a couple special ones to shout out specifically:

Mira and Pattern Magic by spamyoucantswim - this is the very first fic in the tag, published a full 7 months before any other fatt fic shows up! and its an oc fic! MaPM has a really distinct character voice, and I really enjoyed the way that pattern magic is interpreted within, almost like if OCD logic actually worked

Friends Adjacent to a Table by thickestgoosenog - this is the first smut fic to make an appearance in the tag, but I'm not really recommending it for it's pornographic value. I am reccing it because Fero's narration is laugh out loud funny, in a way that made me say "Fero oh no" out loud to my empty room. just... go read it.

A Righteous Man by LuckyDiceKirby - published on the same day as the above is an in-universe excerpts of the biography of Attar Rose written by Orth, and in-universe media is like one of my favorite fanfic genres. this also serves as a double shoutout to LuckyDiceKirby for writing FIVE out of the first 20 fatt fanfics on ao3! that's 25%!

The Orchard by gogollescent - post-finale, Aria Joie and Mako and... like several internet ghosts? meet up. a fic about grief and closure and regrets and also FIGHTING WITH SWORDS. this by far the longest fic in the first 20! standing at over 10k words, its technically unfinished, with a theoretical third chapter promised in the end notes back 7 years ago. Even technically unfinished i still found its prose fantastic, and its absolutely worth the read if you love the counter/weight gang. i can't reccommend this enough

So, there's this fic I want to write for months now about the first time Pete says "I love you" to Vegas and it made me want to make a post about it as well. I truly believe saying that phrase is a huge deal to Pete and I want to explain why.

Starting with the fact that I loved, loved, LOVED that in the show, he never said it. Not directly, anyway. He didn't shoot Vegas when he had the chance, he shot Vegas when it was necessary to save him, he told him he was right there, he told him he was hungry, he told him he's following his heart. All of those things are different ways of saying "I love you" but it's not the phrase itself. And that's important because it truly showcases the core aspects of Pete's character.

Pete isn't like Vegas. Both of them are very emotional but the way they express their emotions is almost the complete opposite. Vegas is letting them get out of control, spilling out of him, while Pete is keeping them deeply locked up inside him until they eventually explode and he can't contain them anymore. Both of them at first are unwilling to recognise how they feel about the other, the changes that are happening inside of them but Vegas comes to the realization quicker than Pete and tells him so. All of this is why Vegas saying the phrase out loud in contrast to Pete never saying it makes perfect sense in the narrative.

I truly believe that Pete has this feeling in his chest which he isn't even sure what it's called or even if it's what most people would call it but it's so strong for Vegas that he knows he can't live without it so he decided to chase after it. There's this incredible fic by LuckyDiceKirby called "even the clearest water" that has an exchange between Vegas and Pete, in which Vegas asks him if Pete loves him and Pete replies with this:

"I don’t know. How could I know what that feels like? I’m not that kind of person. You make my teeth ache. You make the world bright, like it’s real. It hurts. It’s hurt since I met you, but that means I can never forget I’m alive."

I cannot tell you what I even felt when I read that. It was a mix of pure awe and enlightenment, because it was what I had been thinking after watching the show but was unable to put into words.

Now, as I was writing this post, a thought popped into my head related to this and I want to express it. I think the fandom unanimously agrees that Vegas has the capacity for kindness and softness due to Macau, the wonderful, perfect, sweet little gremlin angel of my heart. Macau is the reason Vegas even knows what love is, otherwise starved for it because no one else in his life gives it to him in any way, share or form until Pete comes along.

This got me thinking: who does Pete have in his life to show him what love and affection is?

At first glance, Pete's environment seems fine and way better than Vegas'. He has people that care about him, he has friends, he has a nice room, his grandma sends him meals that he's allowed to eat in his room. Is this actually true though? Is the main family as kind and sweet and full of affection as it seems?

Well...no, it's not. All of this is superficial. Pete got forgotten the moment Kinn had Porsche in his arms (and bed). No one remembered him except Tankhun, who we could argue also loves Pete superficially and doesn't really view him as a person (I love Tankhun and I say that affectionately. I think post canon he has the potential to change his way of thinking and behaviour towards his bodyguards).

But what about Pete's grandma?, I hear people say. Well, she is the only person Pete says "I love you" to but is this enough to claim that he knows what love is? When he doesn't live with her, doesn't have the ability to physically touch her for comfort whenever he needs to, can't talk to her freely without surveillance? He only gets a glimpse of it and if we also include the fact that he works for the main family for years, he's been deprived of love almost all of his life. No wonder the poor man is confused and doesn't realise what he's feeling for Vegas. He wasn't even a person until the safehouse.

The environments Vegas and Pete grew up in shaped them into who they became and it's evident if you think about it in the way I described above: Vegas' environment is cruel and unforgiving with a speck of actual love in the form of his brother and Pete's is presumably kind but devoid of substance. I'm oversimplifying this of course but I think the core aspects of how he lives in the main family play an important role in Pete's character.

All in all, Pete is a brilliantly written character and I want to thank the writing team and Build for giving him to me. I truly hope that when I manage to write this fic, I'll do his character justice.

So I'm in editing mode on my vegaspete f/f Die Hard fic, it was hard to figure out what I had actually written last, but i think it's this:

I am juggling a lot of real life logistics rn and haven't been able to work on much that isn't my current wip (miserable mind control) so here is a lil superbat! I started writing this for the last day of Bruce Wayne Week for the surprised to be loved prompt but I felt like I'd written this same realization a lot and ended up going with my Jason fic instead. I think it's a fun little snippet though!

It shakes something loose in him, some essential part sent rattling around his ribcage like a scattered marble. It isn't a surprise that he should have have loved Clark. That knowledge has always had a certain kind of inevitability to it. What chance did he have, faced with the entirety of Clark, in all his contradictions, his essential goodness, his righteous anger, his blinding smile? What bulwark could he possibly have built that would stand between him and this moment?

But that Clark should love him back. That Clark should look at him, with those assessing journalist eyes, and see someone worthy of his unshakeable love. That's a fact so astonishing Bruce's tongue feels heavy with it.

Clark is still looking at him. There's a kind of tentative hesitation on his face Bruce has never seen before. "If you don't," he begins, and Bruce realizes that he never responded, just stared at Clark like he'd been struck dumb. But surely Clark must have known. It's unthinkable that he hadn't. Surely in all these years Clark must have heard his heartbeat speed at his presence, noticed his breath quicken, and drawn the inevitable conclusion.

"I do," Bruce says. "Of course I do."

2. when was the last time you cried? This past May... my old roommate told me they were going to have to put their cat to sleep and I did spend an entire night crying so hard I had to shower to fix my sinuses

3. do you have kids? nope I can barely keep myself alive rn let alone another human.

4. do you use sarcasm a lot? God I used to be the most obnoxious sarcastic tween-teen but I think I've mostly leveled out on it now.

5. what sports do you play/have you played? I had a very inglorious year of gymnastics that my sister still teases me about to this day.

14. favorite subject? Art classes.... as much as I love reading I hated doing my homework. History classes were fun though, I took a music history class that slapped in college.

15. dream job? I somehow landed ass backwards into my teen self's dream job but the economy is shit, capitalism is evil and I do not make a living wage so I am probably gonna dip. New dream job is "job that doesn't make my brain leak out of my head and lets me buy bubble tea without bankrupting me"
