This is the dinner I give to my fish lol. Behold the majesty of the NLS pellet

Day 25 - Fish skeleton

These are referenced off the actual x-rays taken of one of my old goldfish, Ludiyan. Unfortunately they showed he had kidney disease which he passed away from a few months later, but I kept the images cause I find them fascinating.

Day 26 - Tide pool

Northern clingfish (Gobiesox maeandricus) - a globby little guy that uses a suction disc on its belly to cling to intertidal rocks. The disc holds in moisture so they stay nice and wet even when the tide rolls out!

Day 27 - Invasive species

This is the round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) which is invasive in my home state of Maryland. I found this particular fish interesting because on one hand it's an invasive that outcompetes natives and causes a significant negative impact. But on the other hand it scarfs down large numbers of invasive zebra mussels and has proved to be a good food source for a variety of native predators, including the previously threatened Lake Erie watersnake.

Day 28 - Native fish

I picked the unassuming Eastern blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus). I grew up catching these little guys in the creek near my house and idk I just think they're neat

Magnificent multicolor illumination as seen inside Reed Flute Cave (芦笛岩; Lúdí Yán), also known as "the Palace of Natural Arts”, a 240-meter-long natural limestone cave in Guilin, Guangxi, China which is over 180 million years old. The cave got its name from the type of reed growing outside, which can be made into flutes. I came in second place and won a free bust drawing, but they were so kind when I mentioned I had lost him and offered to make it a full body instead. I absolutely love the finished product, gonna go get it printed nice somewhere I think as a little poster to put up.

So I have some not so super good news. That adorable ACCREDITED picture of Ludi going around was from his latest vet appointment last week. I took him back after he developed persistent, mild fluid accumulation resulting in noticeable popeye and slight body bloating. You can’t see it in that photo really but from above or next to other fish it’s very obvious. 

The vet took x-rays and another skin scrape. The good news is the infected lump behind his head has gone down completely and the skin scrape came up clean. Whatever that infection was is cleared and he’s no longer contagious or acutely ill, as such. 

The not so good news is that there’s something wrong with his kidneys. The caudal lobe of his swim bladder in particular was a bit undersized and misshapen, suggesting something pressing on it, with the kidneys being in the right spot to be that thing. Especially given the fluid buildup which is often associated with kidney issues. 

She couldn’t tell me exactly what the cause was. She brought up infection with hoferellus carassii, a myxazoan parasite that commonly infects young pet shop feeder fish (which he most likely is, given the dubious care of his original owners) bred or raised in mud pond environments and which can cause polycystic kidney disease later in life. It could also potentially have a genetic root, be caused by a tumor, or acute toxin damage i.e. the antibiotic he was on, although she said he probably had an underlying insufficiency beforehand anyway even if the medication is what set it off. 

The bottom line is. None of this is treatable. 

There’s no known treatment or cure for hoferellosis although thankfully it requires an intermediate oligochaete worm host and can’t be passed fish-to-fish, so he’s not an infection risk to other fish in the tank. All of these conditions are progressive. She couldn’t give me any kind of time frame for that. Maybe years. Maybe a lot less. I have no idea. Which kills me. He’s only three and a half. So young for developing any of this, these are all later life diseases. He’s strong and only just an adult and I don’t even know for sure what’s wrong with him, just that I can’t fix it. I can’t make my baby boy better. Now I just have to wait and watch until his quality of life is too low and then euthanize him and that breaks my fucking heart. 

This tough little macho man helped my life, and now I can’t save his, in spite of all the work I’ve done. I’m going to lose him, too soon, a piece of myself.

He moved back in with all his buddies the other day, out of quarantine now he’s not contagious anymore. I think that’ll make him a lot happier, and them too, I promised when I took him out that their brother would come back and I meant to keep that promise. For all intents and purposes he’s a happy fish, swims fine, eats like you’ve never fed him before in his life :P But it’s tough to see him all puffed up. It’s hard. 

I’m going to try not to think about the future. And we’re going to fight it as long as we can. But it’s going to come one day and I’m not sure how I’m going to get through that.

I called the vet finally last night and canceled Ludi’s appointment for today. That was fucking hard. They were very kind though. Sounded genuinely upset and sorry on the phone. I think I’m going to bring something nice over for the office they’ve really been so good to us.

I still spoke to the vet a bit. She says a necropsy is possible although histopathology is probably out since he’s been frozen. But if he had PCKD that should show up as gross cysts, same with a visible tumor. But there’s still the possibility we might not find a cause. I have to think a little about what I want to do.

I want to have his body diaphonized and put in one of those pretty clear blocks. I’d thought about it as a possibility, ever since I got that little tiny specimen a couple months back, for some of my more special fish. But I’d always imagined it long in the future. It’s... so soon. Too soon. 

But I think diaphonized animals are so beautiful, and it would be a lovely way to honor him and keep him with me. I’m in an apartment so there isn’t a good place that’s just, mine, to bury him. And I can’t stand the thought of him being dug up next time they do landscaping or something. Or having to bury him somewhere further away that I can’t easily get to when I want to visit. I like the idea of making him into something beautiful that I can keep with me always. 

I’m currently researching artists and such who do it, I know there are kits and stuff out there but I’d rather have someone experienced do it for something this special. I know it will be a bit expensive but Ludi-booty is worth it. My pretty boy is worth it. 

If anyone out there in the vulture culture world could point me in the right direction I’d be really grateful?

Also Ludi is backsliding, popeyed and pineconing again. Turns out he’s a disgusting poop gremlin and his water had 2ppm of ammonia last night. This is with a filter and a water change 3 days before. Ugh. Got it down to 0.25 and redosed his meds and going to test daily now.

Today in fish: I try to weigh Remy, he throws a tantrum and splashes so much water out of the bowl I have to scoop him out and reset the scale. And then go change my soaking wet shirt. Naughty boy...
