Nat Nebbin Talks New EP, His Writing Process & More [Interview] - Getmybuzzup: Tell us a little about yourself? Nat Nebbin: Alright, I grew up on the west coast. Everywhere from Portland Oregon, to the Bay Area of California, to outside of Vegas. My parents were divorced and had a lot of issues at the time, so I moved around a lot, ya know? I spent a few years in foster homes. After that, I lived with Aunts, Uncles, and Grandparents. I got into rap at an early age and just spent most of my time listening to music and writing rhymes. It’s always been my escape from all of the B.S. going on around me.   Getmybuzzup: How did you get the rap name Nat Nebbin? Nat Nebbin: It’s short for Nathan Nebbinski. Someone called me that one time when I was on roll and just spittin straight fire. We were all in the cypher, and the dude just started saying Nat Nebbin!, Nat Nebbin! And it just stuck.   Getmybuzzup: How long have you been in the music industry? Nat Nebbin: I was signed to a local record label back in 02. I was so young then, and not really prepared for the business aspect of the industry. I did some mix tapes with them, and did an EP with another rapper on the label. The dude that owned the label, got into some trouble and had to shut everything down. Since then, I’ve done some things independently with a couple of other rappers I know. I got married at one point, and put my music career on hold for a while. But I’m back now and doing it bigger than ever!   Getmybuzzup: How would you describe the debut EP that you dropped earlier this month? Nat Nebbin: Oh, it’s a straight-up banger for sure! Everybody’s lovin it! It has everything from hard-hitting tracks like “Lights Out” and “Badway”, to smooth tracks like “Makin’ Moves” and “Where’s The Party At”? It’s top-notch from the first track to the last one. I got a ton of features on this EP, with some of the most talented artists alive right now. J Nolan, Chillz Muzik, Luccidamus, Cleva Thoughts, Maya Miko, Tyler Griffin, and Aspen The Rapper. The production was done by some of the best in the bizzness. Lazy Rida Beats, Insane Beatz, Synbeatz, and a few others. https://wp.me/p1PuJR-59N7 Please Reblog!

Hip Hop & Black Feminism
by Joi Fultz
Hip hop music in the black community is a significant part of the culture. Used as a form of expression and an outlet for both men and women in the black culture, it like everything else has evolved over time, but how much in the right direction is the true question. This article written by Michele Walace back in 1990 was insightful and still completely relevant in my opinion. Hip hop, a very unique genre of music often describes the struggles faced everyday by black people while on the other hand, shares the unique vibrancy and joy we share amongst each other. Men in hip hop are often times known for writing songs degrading the very women that raised them. Why you might ask? Because dehumanizing the black woman and all that she is what sells….. The black woman’s body was often over sexulized and still is till this day, in not just lyrics but in music videos as well. While originating in the black culture, hip hop influences music across the world in numerous cultures. The importance of educating not just black men and women but everybody on black feminism was important when this article was written and is even more now.
Because of the lack of education given in urban school systems rap has been a way the black community uses to educate its youth. Walace talks about female rappers like Queen Latifah, Salt N Pepa and M.C. Lyte using their platform to speak up for black feminist, breaking barriers and setting an example for what both more male and female rappers should be doing. Their outspoken and straightforward lyrics were groundbreaking and gave way for new artist to advocate and do the same.  Almost 20 years later and have the hip hop artist of this generation done their due diligence? I think not… well in a sense. There are a lot more female and a few male artist advocating on the black womans behalf in their music, but it definitely in my opinion doesn't happen as often as it should be.
Female artists like Janelle Monae, Alicia Keys, Beyonce, and Jhene Aiko have spoken publicly on several occasions advocating for black women and black feminism. Many of these artists even calling out men in the industry for not doing enough of this. As far as male artist go, today there are some but few who speak out advocating for black feminism. There are even fewer who actually put it in their music. Artist like Wale, J- Cole and Common have often spoken or written, advocating for black feminist ideologies. On the same hand some of their mainstream music does just the opposite. So while in my hip hop has a long way to go, as far as black feministic advocacy and education goes, I am glad to see the movement continuing to be pushed and broadcasted. So next time you need a song to play, give the car a throwback and play “Ladies first” by Queen Latifah on them and remind your friends what a true QUEEN sounds like.
