1990s Trip Hop Playlist
Bad news and great news with this week's playlist post, folks. The bad news is that, once again, a Spotify version of one of these has shrunk because a song was removed from the platform, but the great news is that over on YouTube, I finally found a song that I've been looking to add for well over a year now to my 90s trip hop playlist. I'd actually tried to upload this track to my own channel before and was forbidden from doing so, but today, while I was updating, I managed to find it: the "Instrumental Mix" of Washington, D.C. duo Thievery Corporation's "Lebanese Blonde." In case you're familiar with the vocal version of this song, this isn't just a version that strips out the singing; this one has slightly different instrumentation to it too—namely Spanish guitar—and is really reflective of what the TC guys have always been about: weaving together different sounds from various parts of the world in order to yield some terrific cosmopolitan lounge beauty 😌.
I also learned this week that a handful of other songs that are in the YouTube version of this playlist had been taken down since the last time I updated it too: three from Paris' DJ Cam ("Mad Blunted Jazz," "Life," and "Gangsta Shit"), and one from Edinburgh's Boards of Canada ("Everything You Do Is a Balloon"). But fortunately, I was able to find other uploads of those same songs and retain them for the playlist.
Also in this update comes a couple adds from the pioneering German label that I've been writing about for weeks now in these playlist posts too: Harthouse, which was co-founded and run by the legendary Sven Väth in the early 90s, and began as a big outlet for trance and hard trance, but then broadened its horizons by the mid-to-late 90s before shutting down for good. There's Frankfurt group Hacienda's organ-jazzy "Nightmare of Max," whose title may be a play on the great Nightmares On Wax—whose own "Mission Venice" and "Fishtail Parker" also appear in this playlist too, by the way—and some chunky and groovy trip hop-blues from Berlin's Jiri.Ceiver called "Ycool," which also appears in my 90s downtempo and German downtempo YouTube playlists too. "Nightmare of Max" has under 300 YouTube plays and "Ycool" has a little over 140.
Hacienda - "Nightmare of Max" Jiri.Ceiver - "Ycool" Thievery Corporation - "Lebanese Blonde (Instrumental Mix)"
And this playlist is also on YouTube Music.
So while the Spotify version of this playlist has been pared down to a mere 34 songs that clock in at a little over 3 hours, the YouTube one has now grown to 61 songs that clock in at 5 hours and 50 minutes 😯. Lots and lots of super dope and rarer trip hop goodies to be found in that YouTube one, including:
a song by the great Squarepusher (operating under his government name, Tom Jenkinson) called "Vogon & I," that was once on Spotify, but isn't anymore
a remix by legendary IDM duo Autechre of their own nebulous and mysteriously related project Gescom's "Mag"
an incredible track from that same Gescom project called "Leritue (Gibber MIx)"
and a cinematic British breakbeat-trip hop interpolation of famed New York street poet Gil-Scott Heron's "The Revolution Will Not Be Televised," by an act called Genaside II.
And lastly, if 5 hours and 50 minutes of trip hop sounds a bit too overwhelming for you, I've got a couple shorter playlists that focus on specific years of the genre too.
1996 Trip Hop: YouTube / YouTube Music 1998 Trip Hop: YouTube / YouTube Music
Enjoy!
More to come, eventually. Stay tuned!

ok ituloy ko nalang din ung associating songs in my playlist w enha mems hehehhee pero hyung line muna, for tom na maknae line
omggg passenger seat by stephen speaks for jay 😭😭😭 tipong hatid sundo ka from ur work or uni then may hugs and kisses + snacks ka pa most of the time from him. may pouch siya ss compartment (???) nung car niya like ur necessities such as makeup, pads, some candies, perfume, extra clothes, etc. tas he'll sing love songs na nagplaplay sa radio for you (jay wld def put your names sa songs when he's singing...gets mo ba??? HAHHWJWJWJAJ like instead of i love you it's i love *insert name*) GANORNZ and then driving classes w him are fun grabe
i associate jake w ligaya by eraserheads! tipong manliligaw mo na willing gawin lahat para sayo. BIG PUPPY BF VIBESSSSSS. for him, ikaw yung personification and epitome of love. would take risks with and for you. take you to his home para you can spend time with his fam as well (mostly dinners after classes and he insists to sleep over sa kanila). skip classes if absent ka because u r sick. helps you with projects bc he can't take you on dates dahil sa tight sched mo and in his words "matatapos na trabaho mo, we get to spend time together, tas spend more time together after this for dates" ! definitely notices all of your details and notices if meron ka binago (ex. haircuts, nail polish, new accessories or clothes) also knows ano likes and dislikes mo (ex. knows what your usual orders sa restaurants or asks to remove a certain ingredient na ayaw mo/ will eat it for you)
my baby hoonie reminds me of champagne problems/the 1 by taylor swift :( . similar to hee, i think sunghoon is one of those partners na akala niyo and nung lahat na will stay til the end yk marriage, kids, growing old together and all. a love story that makes you rethink if true love does exist. sa tingin ko, once you both grow older mas napapalayo yung goals niyo and hindi na talaga makita yung isat isa dun sa future na gusto nila. it's like di na kayo nagcliclick. parang, if there would be a room na filled with people who loves you, mapapaganong ka if andun ba siya? there's a lot of doubt and hesitations so you're both forced to end it to grow as individuals, and to simply forget and accept everything. even if it's been a long time already, you still think of him as a could have been and a what if. til you see him again in a random street looking at someone like how he looked at you before so you're forced to move on kasi he already did and hoping for a chance again would do no good.
-🐧
bet ko tong mga ganito!! baka i also would randomly do this if i remember a member while listening to songs and aabangan ko yan maknae line mo, anon ah!
very domestic nung kay jay huhuhu very him din yung kanta. alam nyo yun? yung maangas pero soft talaga lalo na sa jowa :(( he screams this vibe na would take you to roadtrips anytime, anywhere kahit mahal ung gas because he does not care about the expenses, he just wants you to be happy tapos magggrocery date kayo before the road trip. then if makatulog ka and saktong traffic or stop light, aalamin niya yung time na natitira before mag go and magbiblang siya sa isip niya habang tinititigan ka and inaapreciate yung ganda mo tas hahawi-hawiin niya pa buhok mo or would fix your position para di ka mangalay. if may blanket and pillow sa likod, he'd get it for you. tas if he knows na you had a tough time at work or uni, he'll get you a flower before ka sunduin kahit hindi bouquet or foods that you like or something na matagal mo nang sinasabi sakanyang gusto mo.
jakehoon under the cut!
aaaa i love eheads!! one of the many bands that made my hs life so fun grabe! (i can't help but mention how i cried nung campaign period kapag magpperform si sir ely buendia or yung aheb musical cast sa mga napuntahan kong rally anyways), i love ligaya sm!! very jakey nga yung vibe huhuhu ngayon ko lang din narealize na the song have this golden retriever manililigaw/bf vibes. every dates with him will be composed of laughters, jokes and giggles kahit na nasa formal na lugar or event kayo, nagbubulungan pa rin kayo at nagtatawanan. he's also really energetic and super cute if ikaw din. mayaman siya pero g na g yan sa street food tapos favorite niya yung inihaw na hotdog and you'd always take a photo of him eating it kasi ang cute cute niya, mukha siyang bata. at dahil din matalino siya, he'll help you w/ your acads or work pero he'll never get mad if hindi mo masundan ung help niya. he's just really perfect to be with and very fun.
okay balik angst HAHAHAHA basta talaga si mareng taylor, mapanakit napipili mong kanta ha huhu pero hoon also have this vibe he gives off some time na toxic bf din like hee. well, the difference is hindi ka niya aawayin or what like hee but he silently just grow apart from you kahit nasa relationship pa kayo and ang mas masama pa nyan, ganun ka rin. naiiba yung gusto mong future as you became matured and slowly, you also realize na nawawala na siya sa mga plano mo sa buhay and napapansin niya din yun kaya nawawala ka na rin sa vision niya for his future hanggang sa tuluyan na kayong dalawang mafall out of love. medyo napatunayan nyo nga ung kasabihang "walang nagloko, walang iba, talagang isang araw, wala nalang talaga kayong pagmamahal sa isa't isa at mas masakit yun" tapos you both try to move forward after parting ways. natupad nyo yung mga pangarap nyo pero ikaw, nagsisisi na what if naisama mo siya sa mga plano mo? would he celebrate your success with you? maybe together with the kids na pinangarap nyo nung teenager or bago palang kayo. hanggang sa yun nga, nakita mo na siyang masaya na with his plans back then fulfilled too pero may kasama siyang tinupad yung mga yun at hindi ikaw yun at masaya siya. masakit pero you have no choice but to accept it.

BIO:
Duo have released three studio albums, and their productions are a combination of different styles - house, electro and disco. They have scored remixes for stars of the Polish and foreign music scene such as Monika Brodka, Reni Jusis and Demon - the legend of the club music scene, the author of the all time favorite "You Are My High" hit.
The group was founded in 1999. The name Modfunk name comes from the Polish words "modny” (trendy) and "funk". The first hit was a recording of "Taxi Boy", following with "Superstar", which was placed in the music compilation "Pepsi Faza" (“Pepsi Phase”). The singles that came next were "Funk Salad", which was included in a compilation released by Machina magazine entitled "Niech Cię Usłyszą" (Let them hear you) and "Smile". It is worth noting that the participation in the Pepsi Faza project resulted in a performance at the Hungarian Sziget music festival, where Modfunk was warmly welcomed and played an hour long life-act.
Their debut album "Superfuzja" was released in 2001. It was promoted by the single "Souler". You could have seen the characteristic music video with a blue and red character in a jumpsuit which was shown on MTV Poland and Viva Poland, as one of the first projects of the Polish club scene. It was also quite often heard on the Polish young adult radio channel called Radiostacja. Catchy rhythms and beats that have the famous "french touch" come to mind meant that the group was the trend that was talked about on the Polish house music scene, and the success of Modfunk made a contribution to its substantial development. It is also important that Modfunk took part in a project carried out by Wirtualna Polska called Strefa MP3 (The MP3 Zone), where you could download free Modfunk productions, which in those days was almost a pioneering venture.
It didn’t take long to see the effects of first success. The duo had produced remixes for popular singers in Poland - Monika Brodka ("Miałeś być") and Reni Jusis ("Kiedyś cię znajdę") . At the same time, the artists worked with representatives of the Polish club music scene - among them were Envee, Nuno, Matt Kowalsky, Dr. No and Marysia Sadowska.
Another release came out in 2003. The recording "Love & Hate", which features singer Evah, was again on the playlist of Radiostacja and Radio Bis (now Polish Radio 4). Remixed versions of the tune ended up on an EP for the London label Machine Gun Ibiza Records. Notably, it got very positive reviews in the renowned and prestigious DJ MAG UK magazine.
Two years later, the Modfunk duo released the single "We Got Game". The music was promoted by a computer-animated video, which was nominated for an award of the Yach Film Festival. One of the remixes was created a by French DJ and producer Demon and this French-Polish cooperation resulted in a remix of Demon’s "Happy Therapy" created by Modfunk.
The second album by Modfunk was released in 2008. The album "Emofunk" brought a change in style - melodic house beats were replaced by the more severe electro-pop and even rap, without eliminating the elements of disco. The work on this album included the cooperation of Philippe Zdar from Cassius – the Frenchman is featured in "Showtime". Additionally, the tune "Rack Bhayo Ni Ho Bro" has the guest vocals of John Webb of the American group Love Meets Lust.
After the release of the album the duo invested their time mainly in solo projects. In 2009, however, they were invited to two Polish music festivals - Open'er in Gdynia, where they played on the Red Tent stage, and a few months later the Cracow Selector.
"Land Grab" is the title of the duo's third studio album. The album was released in 2012 and is a return to the lighter sound style - house and nu-disco. Although well-known artists do not appear here and most of the tunes are instrumental productions, this is the best album in their discography - full of pedigree dance sounds, warm and melodic vibes, not only for the dance floor.
The musical duo ended their activities in 2009 after 10 years of creation.

(PL) Modfunk – polski duet grający elektroniczną muzykę taneczną. Tworzą go pochodzący z Warszawy producenci: Marcin Chmarzyński (Tigermaan) oraz Piotr Jarecki (PiMO). Wydali trzy albumy studyjne, a ich produkcje łączą w sobie różne style – house, electro i disco. Na koncie mają remiksy dla gwiazd polskiej i zagranicznej sceny muzycznej, między innymi Moniki Brodki, Reni Jusis i Demona – legendy sceny klubowej, autora przeboju „You Are My High”.
Promował go singiel „Souler”.
Dwa lata później duet Modfunk wydał singla „We Got Game”.
„Land Grab” to tytuł trzeciego studyjnego albumu duetu.

You’ve probably gotten this before, but can I recommend Eleanor Rigby by the Beatles for The Lonely?
I actually haven't gotten this one! It's definitely a good fit.
Eleanor Rigby Died in the church and was buried along with her name Nobody came
The churchyard/graveyard imagery makes me think of Naomi Herne's statement specifically.

Hello!! I listened to your Jared Hopworth playlist the other day and really loved it! Was wondering if you share your thoughts on why you picked some songs/how they relate to him. Basically I just want to know how you see him lol Thanks for your time!!
Anon I am holding your hands in my own so earnestly as I say this but THANK YOU for this ask and thank you for enjoying my playlist!!!
You sent this ages ago and I was very excited about it! And then school and life immediately sapped all the energy from my body, BUT—
I am always so very down to talk about my boy he holds a very special place in my heart. Also you said some songs but I’m just. I’m just gonna break down the entire playlist cause now I have an excuse
But I’ll put it under the cut bc I’m going to talk a lot ✨
(also cw for some brief discussions of emotional abuse and general Flesh-related stuff below)
ANYWAY. Onto the brainrot:
1. Dirty Town - Mother Mother
So this one is up first ‘cause it’s a song about being dissatisfied with where you live, wanting to leave and go somewhere else, etc etc. I saw that kind of dissatisfaction in Jared a lot through his statement in MAG 131, where he talks about not doing well in school or really seeing a future for himself, as well as Sebastian’s comment in MAG 17 about Jared thinking Sebastian leaving him there was “something of a betrayal.” (Though I know this song is more small town/country and Chiswick seems like a pretty bustling area lmao so the vibes aren’t exact)
2. Be Nice To Me - The Front Bottoms
So this song is perhaps The Jared Song Ever. It’s just *chefs kiss* perfect. Like the accidental (or purposeful) destruction of self to fit a narrative assigned to you so that you inevitably become a self-fulfilling prophecy?? How that behaviour ends up destroying good relationships and pushing people away but you’re in too deep to really reverse course??? It makes me think about Jared and Sebastian’s friendship breaking down as they grow apart and change as people but still aren’t able to fully rid themselves of like. That childish fondness you still have for your old friends. (You’re gonna find I have a lot of thoughts and feelings about Sebastian Adekoya also)
3. Angel Eyes and Basketball by Foot Ox
Once again I am thinking about Jared becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy of anger and acting out and not being able to stop it.
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of lyrics that read “I am calling all of my friend to pull me out from this hole, But they’re so caught up in their own shit, And I’m so caught up in my own shit. End ID.]
This bit in particular reminds me of how Jared said he went through friends pretty fast, and how Sebastian was probably his only true long-lasting friend. But even Sebastian couldn’t stay and try to help him forever.
4. Father - The Front Bottoms
I have a lot of thoughts about Jared’s parents honestly, particularly his dad, most of which are me projecting. I won’t get into too much of that mess however I do think about the bit from MAG 131 where Jared says “But they were scared, and that felt good, even back then. It felt right. My Dad was proud of it too. He was a short man, bully, and watching me loom over people really made him happy.” And I think about Jared simultaneously having a strained relationship with his father while also doing everything he could to make him proud, even if that meant being just as much of a bully as him.
5. Days - The Drums
We’re circling back around to his relationship with Sebastian with this one. I think as dismissive as Jared is when addressing Sebastian in his statement during 131, Jared had kind of grown to depend on him for a lot, emotionally speaking. Kind of the break when you’re talking about someone’s only real friend growing up. The song itself is pretty upbeat so I’m reaching a little, (and I’ll reach pretty far ngl) but I do think about Jared feeling like he’s finally lost the only person that actually cared about him when Sebastian leaves for uni, so now he’s got to go it alone and abandon that childhood friendship.
6. Brave as a Noun - AJJ
Ngl I think about “And God knows I could make amends, But I’ve got an angry heart”, in relation to Jared realizing he’s tearing apart the one good friendship he ever while simultaneously not knowing how to Not Do That so often. I firmly believe that Jared and Sebastian actually legitimately cared about each other, but Jared was heading in a direction Sebastian couldn’t save him from and it ended up destroying their friendship.
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of lyrics that read “I could go off the deep end, I could kill all my best friends, I could follow stylish trends, And God knows I could make amends, But I've got an angry heart, Filled with cancers and poppy tarts, If this is how you folks make art it's fucking depressing. End ID.]
7. Bullfighter Jacket - Miniature Tigers
Surprise surprise I am talking to you about Jared and Sebastian’s friendship once again with this one. This ones a bit of a “I’m reaching/it’s really just one lyric” sort of song but I think the vibe is good for them.
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of lyrics that read “Now nothing seems to stay the same, I’m terrified to lose you, but more afraid to change (Oh!) End ID.]
This bit in particular makes me think about like. Jared in the process of realizing that the way he’s turned out is driving away his best friend, but he doesn’t have any sort of identity outside of being a general menace. This is all he’s got, and he’s sticking with it, but he also doesn’t want to lose Sebastian. So this turns into him seeking Sebastian out to be a menace to him directly cause it’s the only way he knows how to connect with people anymore.
8. What Can I Do If the Fire Goes Out? - Gang of Youths
This song is part of my agenda to get more people to listen to the rest of this album besides Achilles Come Down (ironically also on this playlist but we’ll get to that later.) Anyway stream Go Farther In Lightness. But REALLY this song is about abandonment, and Jared is just. Rife with abandonment issues. We know this, we love him, maybe go to therapy king <3
Anyway struggling to maintain connections but ultimately losing them or questioning whether or not you really needed them in the first place really fits in well with him I think.
9. Garden Song - Phoebe Bridgers
Ohhhh the passage of time and dwelling on old wounds that are healed over but not forgotten, just made peace with. Plus it’s about gardens and growth and if you’ve read any of my other long winded “I’m very emotional about Jared rn” posts you’ll know I have BIG feelings about Jared’s domain being a garden. I’ll spare you that whole emotional rollercoaster here but personally I think Jared can have,,,, a little healing. Not that I’m projecting very hard onto this monster man or anything but I think the implications of him “growing” things in the end speaks for itself.
10. Misery Fell - Tally Hall
This song is in here for Sebastian! Honestly I’ve fleshed out Sebastian’s character a lot purely based on my own unhinged headcanoning, so this one especially might seem like a reach since it’s mostly based on my own interpretation of a character we only get a single statement from. But I think this song’s story about a town with a unique relationship with books and knowledge and an outside force that changes that relationship very suddenly fits well for him.
11. Bad Habits - FIDLAR
This one is really just what it says on the tin, it’s a song about bad habits and why someone might engage in them, how they can provide comfort despite their unhealthiness and prove themselves to be really hard to break. And it’s got that extra flavour of being scared/uncertain about your future that I think informs a lot of Jared’s character. Plus I think I could see Jared liking this song in-fiction truthfully.
12. I Wanna Get Better - Bleachers
Okay so this song in particular is entirely my very specific interpretation of Jared’s character that is,,, mostly projection. Look, I know what canon says but We’re Not Looking At Canon right now. And in my heart of hearts I think Jared did have the capacity to heal and get better, and because I think writing him off as something purely evil and inhuman does a disservice to the character. So this song is mostly *recognition of self through the other* from one former big angry teenager (me) to another (fictional) former big angry teenager.
13. Trouble - Cage The Elephant
This one is also mostly vibes based but it’s got a weariness to it that I associate a lot with s5 Jared. Like if we think about it— Jared is in his forties or thereabouts by the time MAG171 rolls around. There was a lot of violence and acting out and physicality to most of his earlier appearances that aren’t really reflected in 171. He does threaten to try and get a “few good hits in” when Jon shows up to smite him, but think about how quickly he lets go of that?? I’ve mentioned this in other posts but I genuinely don’t think that earlier seasons Jared would’ve backed down in that situation, even if he knew he’d lose, which just goes to show how much he’s changed by the time s5 rolls around.
14. Skeleton Appreciation Day - Will Wood and the Tapeworms
This one just feels very Fleshcore honestly, both with the focus being on bones and also the theme of body image/intimacy issues. Like I love the butcher aesthetic believe me, (just look at my main TMA oc lmao) but sometimes I think people forget the other areas and fears that the Flesh extends to. But that’s a whole other post honestly I could talk about how reductive the fandom gets with the Flesh just as much as I could talk about how reductive they are with Jared LMAO
15. Body - Mother Mother
Listen. I am not immune to The Flesh Song Ever. I’m just SAYING if the shoe fits HHEHDHFHF
But rlly a lot of the notes from the last song apply here too. One day I’ll write a rambling post about the Flesh itself..... one day
16. Real Men - Mitski
This song was given to me by a mutual (hi Calvin if you’re reading this) and OH the toxic masculinity hurting inward as much as it does outward and how that reflects in Jared’s character is just.... so fitting. Like I think on the surface level most people get that Jared’s character is informed a lot by toxic masculinity and how it’s taught and learned and ultimately rewarded and encouraged. Jared learns from his father that it’s good to be strong and mean, good to put others beneath you. He’s rewarded for being like that to the point where when that strength stops serving him he doesn’t really have any other place in the world, which ultimately makes him a perfect candidate for the Boneturner’s Tale.
17. Achilles Come Down - Gang of Youths
Ik for a few weeks there this was everyone’s blorbo from my shows song (and rightly so, it fucks, once again listen to the whole album I am BEGGING—) but I think it fits Jared well bc of the self-destructive tendencies and hopelessness on display here. Jared said it himself in MAG131, he couldn’t see a future for himself, he was just acting out bc that’s all he had left. The one person who he thought actually cared about him (in his eyes) betrayed him and left him behind too. And I like this song bc it’s being sung from the perspective of someone trying to prevent Achilles from jumping. Makes me think about how Sebastian very well could have done his best to keep Jared on a good path, keep their friendship together, but ultimately there comes a time where the strain is too much, and you have to let a person go.
18. Just Take My Wallet - Jack Stauber’s Micropop
This is. The MAG17 song. This Is It. Jared’s mom is another character I think a lot about, but that shouldn’t be surprising at this point if you’ve actually made it this far into this post. I think she was as much a victim of Jared’s father’s “bullying” as Jared was, and based on Jared’s recollection of her I don’t think she took a very active role in making sure Jared was protected from that. But I think people forget that she was one of— if not the first people we know Jared tested his powers on. And I think often about how she saw what this book was doing to her son and the monster it was turning him into and she STILL somehow managed to get it away from him to return it to the library. She ultimately tried to protect her kid from what the Boneturner’s Tale was doing to him. Also this bit??? This bit at the end??????
Tumblr media
[ID: screenshot of lyrics that read “What's the softest way to say, You took away my friend, my buddy? What's the kindest way to say, You took away my friend? What's the kindest way to say, You took away my friend, my buddy? What's the kindest way to say, The end?” End ID.]
Is this Jared talking about Sebastian leaving him? Is this Sebastian in the years that follow Jared’s disappearance wrestling with the guilt of bringing the Boneturner’s Tale to him and hating it for taking his friend away before they could even attempt to reconcile their friendship? Either way I’m distraught!
19. I Guess It Could Be Looked at as an Escape, or as a Chance to Start Over - Flatsound
So this song doesn’t have any words, but from title and vibes alone I thought it followed song 18 really well. Because if you think about what the Boneturner’s Take offered Jared it *could* be looked at as an escape or a chance to start over. It was the lifeline he needed to escape what he was certain would be a bitter and miserable existence, though of course it didn’t come without cost, so the melancholic and lonely sound of the song itself reflects that really well.
20. Banks - Lincoln
Another song given to me by a mutual! (Hi Hope :3c)
This is a more recent edition and I forgot to actually arrange it in the playlist BUT REGARDLESS this one circles back around to Jared and Sebastian bc I think way too much about the two of them before MAG17. This is once again a lot of wishful thinking a projection that maybe Jared and Sebastian could have worked things out. Theres an AU in my head where they actually manage to talk and sort things out when Sebastian comes back from university
Tumblr media
[ID: a screenshot of lyrics that read: I want the catharsis of knowing, something bad’s about to happen, but also knowing that I can’t do anything about it, because your new house just don’t shine, quite like the one you grew up in used to, I wanna come and visit, I wanna see this through, but, I never will because you’re just not what I need, and I am just not what you want, though you’re in everyone I meet and. End ID.]
Also this verse??? I’ll take close friends who drifted apart but still care very deeply for each other on some level for $100
ANYWAY. THATS IT
Once again I am shaking your hand if you’ve read this entire rambling thing, and THANK U AGAIN ANON for giving my an opportunity to talk about how much I care about Jared Hopworth.

How to be an ally
(I fixed ALL the links so fucking reblog)
1.  Check In On Your Black Friends/Acquaintances
In my opinion, I believe the best way to be an ally is to reach out to your Black friends and check in on them, consistently. If you can recognize the times we are living in are absolute hell, you should be checking in on the most effected. None of my friends have checked up on me to see how I was doing or just to talk. They didn’t even bring up the protests until I did. It feels very very lonely and scary to not be checked up on by the people who say they support and love you. So, I’m making this the first point because I don’t want anyone else to feel this way, not trying to complain.
2.  Learn More About Black History
It’s important to learn about the Black activists that our history books left out. Yes, Martin Luther King Jr. was, and is, important but we need to reflect on why he was pushed on us so much in our history classes, compared to other Black leaders. Is it because our government would rather us walk down the street holding signs than actually defending ourselves against the cop who’s beating us?
Here’s a master list of activists to start you off.
3.  Go to Rallies and Protests (If you can)
Find protests and rallies in your area by looking on Twitter and search #yourcityprotest. Or watch your local news channel to see where they are (if they’re being covered on the news). Also search on Facebook. Wear a mask.
4. Donate and Sign Petitions
If you don’t have extra money to donate, that’s fine. If you still want to be an ally then sign all the petitions you can. Take a day to research all the ones you can sign/haven’t signed and sign them!
(Also you don’t need to donate to change.org! Directly donate to non-profit organizations and victims’ families!)

If it’s not too much trouble, could I ask for a madness combat matchup?
Im a biromantic (asexual) female. I’m like 5’6 or something like that. I’m a bit chubby, but my breasts rival Sanfords lol. I’ve got glasses because I’m blind as heck and long brown hair with a weird blonde streak. I’m a nerd, and I love to mess around with computers and technology stuff, and for a while I spent a lot of time studying animatronics like they use at Disneyland. I occasionally hop between interests and recently I was really into cryptozoology and learning about the Mothman and aliens. Writing and baking are currently my main pastimes, and I love baking for others and sharing food. I almost always have music playing and love singing, mainly for my self, but occasionally for other people, and I find it fun to make playlists for people and share the music that I like. I’m a total introvert and I don’t spend a lot of time with others, but when I do I’m usually more outgoing. I’m a total crybaby, and I get emotional about everything. I think that’s it, sorry if this is weird or anything like that, and sorry about sending this at a dumb time, my sleep schedule is weird. Thank you so much!!
Don't ever say sorry about sending things in at wrong times !! I'll never judge, I stayed up till 3 AM last night hehe, as long as you get the proper sleep its okay <3 enjoy!
You got a match! You're matched with...
Auditor!
<3

Tumblr media
Everyone wonders how you managed to turn this man into sap
Well, it started with your quaint little job, working as an engineer- you'd just recently gotten it!
You made a moderately big breakthrough in the MAG technology, allowing them to grow even larger in size
Auditor came over to review your work and you just stood there like 🧍‍♀️
You were so tense omg relax bb
He approved of your innovation and he asked you a couple questions
"Are you good with any other types of technology?" Was the one that caught your ear
"Y- ahem- yes! Yes, I love working on robot beings, animatronics, if you will. On a general scale, though? Just robotics!"
He showed no indifference, but you managed to relax for some reason
A couple of days later he reappeared and promoted you to an all-new rank ???
Whoa!!! You had your own special wing???
He promoted you to "Robotic Control", and showed you to a room FILLED with books, tinkering toys, and a cool little area obviously meant for building said robotic stuff.
"You impressed me, newbie. Let me repay the favor."
"Hshs?jdiwh???sksuwu?woouu??u?u?o???" -your brain, probably while crying
You were so happy in there, and all the books were filled with other stuffs you were interested in
Like mysterious cryptids, their myths and it even discussed their supposed anatomy!
He bought you all the best computer parts from out of state and let you build your own computer ,,
Sometimes he would visit you while you worked and you had this weird feeling that he liked you
You were writing a short little story and singing softly to yourself one time, and then the Auditor came in
You nearly threw your book in the air from being scared
"I'm, could you please knock next time, boss?"
He looked like he was about to protest., but hesitated, then nodded. Your brain couldn't comprehend how you did that
A few minutes later you were tinkering on the current project you were working on: a robot grunt
You were hoping it could be altered by the MAG innovation you had
Suddenly, the grunt whirred to life and ran straight at the first target it could see: you
You barely had time to react when your own mf boss YANKED you to his side with lightning speed
He did away with the robot quickly with the spare pistol he had attached to his leg
"Good targeting mechanism, but it needs a little tweaking."
You just stared at him as he held you FLUSH AGAINST HIS SIDE
You stammered out an affirmative
He didn't leave you alone after that, visiting nearly every day
One day he walked in on you actually singing, and eating some brownies
He tried to make a swift exit, forgetting his promise to knock, when-
"It's okay, boss, I can tell when you're coming to see me nowadays."
He did a double-take, and reentered
You offered him a brownie
He loved it
He loves your baking
You bake more
Stonks
He knocked another day to hear sniffles from inside your quarters. You didn't respond, but he still came in- dare he say that he felt worried?
Auditor cautiously approached you and asked what was wrong
You were overthinking about your weight :(
He doesn't deal with individual insecurities in the common grunt, so he was confused on how to help
You just gestured for a hug, and he brought it in
Some instinctual urge inside him told him to whisper sweet nothings and thats what he did
He complimented your body, your personality, he was WAYYY uncomfortable with being so open about his feelings ngl
But he wanted to help you feel better awww
Eventually he closed off with a curt "I love you"
He didn't even regret saying that
You felt safe with him :)
Ohohoho im getting more matchup requests and I must say; I can take story requests/HC requests too 👀 I hope you liked this OP !! Thank you for the ask 💜

POP IN THE SUPERMARKET
Conveyer rock - is it all a hype? Colin Irwin looks at pre-packed pop and talks to the men behind new bands Queen (left) and Merlin
Hype. An ugly, unpleasant word frequently recurring in rock circles.
Up in the boardroom of a vast record company the fat cigar brigade are scratching heads. Binn and Batman have come up with another surefire hit and they want somebody fresh to market it. They ponder a few names and finally decide on one with slight but clear sexual connotations - suggestively camp.
Name settled, they work on the people who will be in this new band. They might be able to find a ready-made group to fit the bill but better to mould their own. There's a singer who has been around for a few years.
He's not great but he knows how to throw himself around a stage, has a hairy chest and can hit the high notes. Give him a new name and he'll do. Somebody knows a lead guitarist who can play a bit and looks good. They can advertise for the others.
They'll work out a sensational stage act, rig them up in some flash gear, buy them the best equipment and arrange a string of appearances in some influential venues. Plunge a few thousand quid in launching them with advertising and posters and "They'll be the biggest thing since sliced bread," chief fat cigar tells his underlings.
Session musicians are employed to record the single and being a Binn and Batman special the radio stations label it "chart bound" and play it twenty five times a day. Seeing the glossy photos in the bop mags the kids gather up their pennies and buy it.
VOILA, stars are born - or manufactured. An extreme form of hype.
There's also a cliché commonly used in the business about people who have been around for many years and finally make it. It's called talent-will-out. An idealist phrase but there is still a popular belief that if a band is truly talented enough it will win through in the end.
Yet even the greatest band in the world need a bit of pushing in the first place. When a record becomes a hit it's not always that easy to distinguish between hype and talent-will-out.
If a record company spends astronomical sums of money promoting a band, is it hype? Or is it a legitimate and necessary weapon in the music business? The argument is that the BBC's ever-tightening playlist and the effects on the industry of the three-day week have made it harder than ever for a new group to make it - talent or no. Without a big money machine behind it there isn't a hope.
The situation is illustrated by two energetic new bands, who both look like breaking.
Big money has been spent on Queen and Merlin, who have had new singles released during the last month.
Queen's record, "Seven Seas Of Rhye," is already moving swiftly up the chart, while Merlin's "Let Me Put My Spell On You," is doing well enough to suggest it might follow suit.
There is no suggestion that either band is a manufactured or manipulated product in the sense of the Monkees. They play the music on their own records entirely themselves and they are both hard at work on the road.
Yet the question arises as to whether they would be doing quite so well without the resources of big companies behind them.
In the case of Queen it's Trident Audio Productions and EMI and for Merlin it's Cookaway Productions and CBS.
The one common factor is that money and backing has been provided because the companies have a solid, unshakeable belief in the artists they are promoting. They are indignant about any suggestion of a put-on or that there has been any attempt to con the public.
Listen to Merlin's producer Roger Greenaway for half-an-hour and there is no doubting his faith in their ability. "They are going to break, I know they are. I'm convinced the record will be a hit."
Nobody's saying exactly how much it has cost to launch either band. "Over a period of months between £5,000 and £10,000" has been spent on marketing Queen by EMI while the figure for Merlin is even vaguer. "A bit, but not a vast amount. Not a fortune by any means."
"Seven Seas Of Rhye" is Queen's second single and was recorded as part of the album "Queen 2" which has just been released. Things started to move for them about a year ago when they recorded their first album for Trident, who have a distribution contract with EMI.
An advance was paid to them to help with the immediate costs of putting them on the road.
Review copies of the album - about 400 of them - were sent out to everyone who might conceivably have any influence on the record buying public, from discos to the national press. Copies were personally distributed to radio and TV producers and extensive advertising space was bought in the trade papers.
The launch for Queen was more concentrated than most artist are entitled to expect.
Trident were completely behind them from the start and found them their American producer Jack Nelson. EMI promotions men Ronnie Fowler and John Bagnall decided they had a product with an exceptional chance of success and they went all out to exploit it to the full.
Says Fowler: "Every record we release we work to a pattern of promotion. When I went round with the album it was normal procedure. It becomes un-normal when people start phoning you - that's when you put more effort into it."
Bagnall adds: "It became obvious after a week or so that it wasn't standard promotion that was necessary. We did a more complete promotion job than usual on Queen because we thought they were going to make it.
"They're all good-looking guys and I did a round of teeny papers and all the girls in the office swooned over them. Brian, the lead guitarist, had made his own guitar and a couple of the nationals picked up on that. It was good, gossipy stuff."
Queen's publicity machine was working from all angles because they were also getting external promotion from Tony Brainsby's promotion office.
He had been involved with them from the time they had been trying to get record producers interested. The intensity of it all paid off when they were invited to do a spot on the Old Grey Whistle Test. Radio Luxembourg latched upon the single "Keep Yourself Alive" and played it regularly.
Their first tour, supporting Mott the Hoople, got the full works. Local press was saturated with releases about this new band which was shortly coming to their town, elaborate displays were arranged at the front of the house on the night of the concert, local disc-jockeys were informed, and window displays were made in about 200 local record shops.
"Trident and EMI committed themselves right from the start to this band, to make sure they had a PA which was better than other bands had and to make sure they had the right clothes. Some of their outfits cost £150 each," said Bagnall. "Spending money on a band isn't hype. It wasn't being flash or extravagant for the sake of building an image. It was making sure that everything else was as good as their music."
Not so far removed from the attitude towards Merlin, although it has been on a smaller scale in this case.
The first Merlin tour, still underway, is rigorous. They are playing ballrooms and colleges all over the country on a lengthy round.
An ambitious project for a new, unknown band, but it has already been successful in that it has launched them as a name people now know. A full-page advertisement was bought in the MM. That's the sort of treatment you might get if you're Bowie, or Ferry, or even Mick Ronson. But Merlin?
They have only been in existence in their present form since last May.
They emerged as a result of discussions between Alan Love and Derek Chick about the possibility of forming a band with definite commercial appeal and a glamorous stage act. The idea reached fruition via a band called Madrigal, who had for some time been working the same circuit as Mud before "Crazy" broke for them.
Madrigal disbanded but reformed with the same drummer and bass player, and Love as singer and Chick as manager. A couple more young musicians were found to join them and Chick started the usual hustling to get them going.
In due course they came to the attention of Cookaway, and Roger Greenaway was hastily summoned to take a look at them. He had already seen Madrigal and when he saw the new model he immediately saw a big future for them.
Greenaway says: "I'd been looking for a group of this type for three years - a young under-20s group who can present a good act. There's a lot more showmanship attached to bands now. I wanted an act with a slightly different approach. I was in New York producing the Drifters and I came back especially to hear them."
He quickly took them into a studio to see how they reacted there and among the tracks they recorded was "Let Me Put My Spell On You" which had been written by Greenaway in collaboration with Tony Macaulay. Like Queen, the best equipment and some fancy costumes were bought for them and the launching process was put into operation.
My own experience of the Merlin project was a couple of weeks ago at Reading Top Rank - a bizarre mixture of precocious boppers, ageing teds, and stern-looking heavies.
Posters and pictures of the group were plastered all over the place and by the time they eventually appeared late in the evening you had been informed quite thoroughly that Merlin had made a record called "Let Me Put My Spell On You."
Greenaway says of Love: "He's got star quality and he's a great charmer. The guitar player Jamie Moses has got a terrific potential too. I've worked with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones but for me this guy at 18 is a better player than Jimmy Page was at the same age. He's the sort of player guys can follow - like Jet Harris - he had an incredible following with the guys."
He likens the Merlin launch to a military operation. The career of the group has been minutely planned since October. Accepting that it is almost impossible to get airplay for a new band on the BBC they decided the best way to break them was through a solid mass of live dates.
The dates were booked, once again the best equipment, including a light show, was bought for them, and distinctive stage costumes especially designed.
"By the time the tour has ended they will be a really tight band. We are getting support in the regions and you can break a record if you can get regional radio stations and disco plays. I believe this record is a hit and the signs are there. This is a ten-year job as far as I'm concerned."
Not that big money backing is any guarantee of success.
One of the biggest projects of this type was the launching of young Darren Burn as Britain's answer to Donny Osmond. To their eternal credit the record-buying public didn't apparently want an answer to Mr Osmond and the campaign failed.
The pop supermarket is not a new trend. The attractively packaged mass-produced record has been a part of the industry for a long time. The early releases of Love Affair, White Plains and Edison Lighthouse for example spring to mind.
The whole thing is justified for the makers by the fact that they still become hits, thus proving there is a demand for made-to-order records. If the public is willing - or gullible enough - to pay 50p for music created in the boardroom. Well it must be OK.
The Merlin single is blatantly, unashamedly aimed at being a big hit - that seems to have been the one criterion in making it. It has all the ingredients and as the whole thing has been done with concentrated professionalism it will probably be a hit.
Back to Roger Greenaway: "I don't want to present this as a Monkees type of image. It's not a manufactured group in any way - these guys have all been in other bands.
"What Merlin are about is success - reaching people. It's so wrong for opposing people to criticise. If Chinn and Chapman go out to reach a particular market at the thing they do best, and they reach them, then they're doing their job. They've filled a gap.
"When this record happens it'll be called hype but we haven't hyped anybody. Not a vast amount of money has been spent on them. It would be silly to have a tour like this without some sort of advertising. All the money that has been spent on them so far has been towards getting them on the road.
"It's expensive but it's minimal if you think of it as a along term thing."
It may be unfair to associate Queen with the pop supermarket. The group themselves were apprehensive about appearing on Top Of The Pops and the prospect of a hit record.
They have always regarded themselves as an album band and were concerned about being connected with the chart groups. The fact remains that they have been on the receiving end of a giant campaign to create a best-selling single and album.
The first album had sold far better than they had anticipated and there was great excitement around Trident and EMI as the second one was being made. Manager Jack Nelson came in virtually every day to play new tracks as they were completed and many discussions followed on which one should be released as a single.
A special meeting was held between Bagnall, Fowler, marketing manager Paul Watts and a few others to discuss the approach to the release of "Queen 2."
"We talked about the possibility of boxing the album, and other various publicity and posters needed to produce an album we were convinced was going to be one of the biggest of the year. We set a high target for it. 'Seven Seas' isn't a housewives' record so with the daily shows like Edmonds, Blackburn and Hamilton, there's no chance of getting it played, we knew that from the start. But the weekend shows - Rosko, Henry, and D.L.T. - they all flipped over it. I took the records round personally because I felt so strongly about it."
The prime plug, however, is Top Of The Pops. If a record gets exposure on that there is a more than even chance that it will become a hit. He played it to the show's Robin Nash and a couple of days later Nash phoned him and asked him where Queen were. Later he rang back and invited Queen to do a session.
The band weren't too sure whether they wanted to do it but eventually agreed although even then they didn't know until the last minute whether it would be used because they were half expecting a David Bowie film to arrive and take it's place. But in the end Queen were shown and "Seven Seas Of Rhye" moved dramatically from there.
"A lot of people have invested an awful lot of time and money in this band but not as a hype," says Bagnall. "The only truth in the music business is that if a band isn't good, no amount of money will get them to make it."
Greenaway may be right that Merlin are one of the most exciting bands to merge since the Beatles. Fowler might be right that Queen are one of the best since the Who. But big business still remains one of the sadder aspects of the music industry today.

Music has been a very important escape mechanism for you recently. Your job has been hellish, and getting your degree has also been a chore - in the midst of so many deadlines and professional disappointments what has been a light for you is Damon Albarn, your newly divorced music teacher who is old enough to be your dad.
You detail these little “buts” as a mantra whenever the subject is him, whether in internal monologues or when you talk about him with your close friends. You never really believed in relationships between two people of very different ages, and you felt like you needed to remember those details whenever you could to keep that completely carefree crush from becoming something you couldn't control.
You started taking classes with him every Saturday after you were cast on your city’s production of a musical. You knew it was a very small step for a career in the industry, but it was very significant for you. You were exhausted from any activity that involved learning given how tired you were from college, but learning music with Damon was definitely something that you didn't even place in the same mental category. It was with him that you vented about how your week was, how you missed your parents who lived absurdly far away from you, it was with him that you shared the small victories of the day-to-day that were too insignificant even to share with your longtime friends. Which is funny, since this symbolic relationship was built in a matter of 2 months. Damon, in the beginning, was very reserved and “gray”, and it was amazing how in a matter of such a short time he shown himself to be someone so energetic, observant and empathetic; although a little bit of a control freak sometimes. When the wild waves of life seemed to take you everywhere at the same time and left you lost, despite so little time in your life, Damon became a constant.
And it worries you.
What are you going to do when the money to pay for his classes runs out? Certainly, although significant, what you had seemed to be was, above all, a friendship of convenience. You were very different people, with very different aspirations, and especially at very different points in life. As much as you liked each other *as friends* and considered yourselves people you wanted close by, Damon had a well-lived life to sustain. He would not have time much less willpower to listen to your complaints and insecurities in a context that did not involve an exchange relationship. At least, that's what you thought.
Saturday was also one of the two days you could wake up late, so in addition to having a rare time for your leisure, you were able to rest at least a little more than normal. That particular morning, you noticed that there were two missed calls from Maggie on your cell phone. Maggie was one of the producers of the musical. She used to bring you very decisive and very good news. If she called you, you did whatever it took to answer her right away. An unbelievable wave of anxiety takes over you. “Hello, Mags, you called?” You say, excited, but very nervous. Dealing with people who have your dreams constantly in their hands is somewhat stressful. You bite your nails.
“Hey, Y/N, yes. Um. You okay?”
“Yeah, thanks for asking. What happened?” You notice that Maggie's tone is different. The funny thing is that everyone is always so apathetic in the artistic world, and Maggie was the only person you knew so far that showed any kind emotion.
“So… you were dropped.”
Ah.
“I’m-I’m sorry?”
“You… were dropped. We made some changes here and there and you won’t be on our show anymore. If anything changes again, we’ll call. I promise.”
“Thank you. Bye.”
“Good luck, kid.”
Um.
Your stomach drops, and for a moment you feel like you've been punched. Maybe you've been wrong all along.
My God. My God. My God.
You feel like your entire world has collapsed around you. There aren't even reasons for you to keep going to class. All that effort and money spent... are now in the trash.
Artists spend a lot of time investing in themselves. You always have to become better. Faster. Learn techniques. Reinvent yourself. Stay beautiful. And you don't believe that in your first real experience in this world... that happened. Most likely a friend of the director took your place.
My God.
You swallow the tears, after all, you told everyone you knew that you knew how this world worked and you wouldn't be shaken if something like this happened. No one is watching you right now - but you still feel that you would disappoint them if you cried.
But you couldn’t smile anymore. Nothing could take away your expression of shock and uncertainty.
Not even funny posts on Reddit. Not even funny memes sent by your friends in the morning.
Nor the message from Damon confirming the class of the day.
I won't be able to go today ☹, you type, and you erase it.
Hey, I got dropped from the musical. you type, and you erase it.
How are you doing? Definitely not.
I’ll be there! 😅 You hit send.
Hope we finally figure out that bloody solo, he replies.
You do not answer.
You change your clothes, without your motivational playlist playing in the background this time. The beginning of a great plan going on in your life was no longer there. You didn't even pick up your headphones and the subway ride was completely silent, except for the ambient sound.
You arrive at school, and Damon welcomes you with the usual tight hug, and wide smile. You give a yellow smile in response, and he immediately realizes that something is out of place. “Is everything okay?” His expression quickly changes to one of concern. Your stomach drops even lower. Maybe it hit the ground by now.
“I…”
You don't want it to end. Your dream ended, but not this, too. This cannot end. “Can we try another song today? One not from the musical?” You ask, exasperated.
“Uh… I mean-”
“Please?”
"Did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed today?" He laughs nervously. “But... the musical’s why you’re here. I’m confused--”
“I know, but pretty please?” You insist, cringing by now to keep from crying.
“Um. Sure – but did something happen? Tell me. I’m-I’m here to help.”
“I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. Please.” You feel your voice weaken more and more. You don’t wanna cry, though your eyes are already burning. “Please, Damon.”
“Right. Okay.” He says, raising his hands in defeat. He starts collecting his material.
“What are you doing?”
“No class today. Something clearly happened and we need to talk it out.”
“I-I got sacked. But there’s no need to…”
“I got it. C’mon. I’m not a monster, I won’t charge you for talking it out. All we’ve worked for… fucking cunts.” There’s the visceral side of him. “You gotta tell me how it happened.”
“Okay.”
He only leaves your two chairs in place.
After you two sit, he starts. “This happens quite a lot in this world. And every student reacts the same.” Though this sounds a little too insensitive, you imagine it’s the truth, and his tone does the job of conveying his compassion. “Did they call you? Or did you find out through somewhere else, like Patti LuPone?”
“Huh. At least they called me. They just straight up told me I’m no longer in the cast.” You say, totally not comforted by that. But it would be even worse if you found out by other means. “I don’t know what to do now.”
“Don’t let your spirit be broken by that – you’re really talented, and I don’t like paying compliments. You know that.”
“Talent is not enough sometimes. That’s also something you’ve said to me before.”
He goes silent, and you start apologizing in the same instant.
“No, no, you didn’t hurt my feelings.” He interrupts you. “That’s true. But you’re really young, I shouldn’t have said that to you. Shit like that happens all the time. We learn a lot from it and you have your entire life ahead of you. That was… limited of me.”
“I know I’m almost getting my degree, and there’s other things for me to do… but fuck. I-- I really wanted that. You know how much.”
“I do. I also know exactly how you’re feeling now. We’re always so excited when this kind of thing happens. We plan our entire lives based on that one fragile and uncertain plan, and then boom, it’s gone. We always count on the fact that we’ll eventually have to decide between our career and something else when the choice comes, but what do we do when it doesn’t come? I know how that feels. Also--”
He grabs his guitar. You roll your eyes. “Don’t tell me you have a song for that.”
“I don’t.” he answers. “But I do have a story to tell you.”
For the next two hours, he tells you all about a very ambitious audiovisual plan that he tried to engage in his early 30s. Among countless questions and answers, Damon Albarn showed you through his history how very determined he really was. He goes into the most minute details about the ideas he had for a film and several concept albums for a virtual band that, in your opinion, sounds like something very innovative and, at the same time, incredibly palatable to the mainstream. You thought that the band he was part of when he was even younger was already very wronged because, from what you heard from the demos, they were really incredible, but the fact that such a project didn't go ahead ... just proved to you more and more that talent sometimes really wasn’t enough. Just when you thought you couldn't admire that man more.
“So, believe me when I say I know how that feels.” Goddamn. He looks at his clock, and almost jumps at how the time flied. “Bloody hell, I have another student in like, 5 minutes.”
“God, I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. This is a tale very few people know about. I’m glad I shared it with you.”
“…That had potential. Don’t give up on it.”
“Don’t give up on your plans either. I really mean it when I say you’re talented as fuck.”
You couldn’t help but smile through the dried tears and puffy eyes. You say your rushed goodbyes. But before can you leave the room, he holds your arm. “Wait. I know it’s hard, but don’t spend the rest of the day thinking about it. Do you want to do something tonight?”
“Uhhh—what you have in mind?” You can’t believe your ears.
“I don’t know. Do you drink?”
“More than I should.”
“Perfect. So I know a place we can go. Any preference of hours?”
“After 7 pm, I guess?”
“Works for me. I’ll send you the address soon then.” He says. You stand still, frozen, still processing what just happened. He’s blinking as if he just told you how’s the weather outside. “Now you can go.”
“O-kay. See you in a few hours then, Damon.”
“See you in a few hours, Y/N.”
You tried to hide your excitement, in vain. You smiled like an idiot.
This was one of the scenarios of your daydreams when you were walking around, talking quietly to yourself. Damon Albarn, your newly divorced music teacher who is old enough to be your father, just asked you out. You don't care if it was pity. After such disappointment, you allow yourself to create a little more of that stupid, inconsequential hope that your life would take an exciting turn for the first time.
He sends you the address a few hours after your class/conversation, when you were starting to get ready to meet him. It was a pub that you already knew well, and had visited with some friends in the past. You choose a dress that has become your “uniform” recently, for valuing your body type well and for translating your style in a way that is both stylish and very comfortable. When you finish getting ready, you take a deep breath. There is a world of difference between what you wanted to happen and what you think will happen. But you do not care.
The tragic call you received in the morning barely crosses your mind on your way to the pub.
Upon arriving, you find Damon - always so punctual - sitting in the corner of the lounge fiddling with his cell phone while he takes a few sips of a drink that you have no idea what it is made of. You never took him for a complex drink guy. He is really full of surprises. You feel slightly self-conscious out of a sudden, stomach churning in anticipation. He raises his eyes, and his gaze meets yours. His usual welcoming smile makes all your worries go away. You couldn’t help but smile wide too.
“Hello there. A stark contrast to this morning’s Y/N.” He notes, looking you up and down after you two share a tight hug, that smile still there.
“My plan tonight is to forget everything that happened before we talked, okay? Just let me forget about the call!” You answer, playfully, trying to pretend you weren't in the least ... affected ... by the way he received you.
And the time you spend together goes as usual. It’s amazing how there’s no space for awkward silences between you two. To one thing you tell him, he brings you three more things to tell, and vice-versa. You two just… click. You make each other laugh, and even if things don’t go the way you daydream about, which is totally okay, given that he’s twice your age and you’re not sure if you can handle the implications that age difference has, you’re glad to call him a good friend. He’s amazing, and you’re having a great time with him.
By your fourth beer and his fifth fancy drink, your conversation enters a territory that hasn’t been truly explored by you two yet. His romantic past. You only knew he was divorced because he mentioned it very vaguely one day, nothing else. You didn’t know why, who was her, or when. But apparently, he was about to tell you.
“We were both really… young… and didn’t have a clue of what we were doing with our lives. She was a musician too, Justine. Not anymore.”
“Because of what happened between you two?” You ask, the beers gradually taking the indiscretion filters out of you.
“Maybe. I don’t know. She seemed tired of everything. She wanted a life I’m not sure I would be able to live. I also pressured her a lot, I tried to create a version of her that somehow fitted all my expectations and, long story short, we weren’t right for each other. But I still think she’s incredible. I still admire her a lot. Not sure how she feels about me though.”
“Are you still in love with her?”
“Oh, no. There’s a big difference in admiring someone and being in love with them, kid.”
After that sentence of his, for the first time that night, an uncomfortable silence hangs between you - Instant Crush, by Daft Punk, almost ironically, starts playing on the pub's speakers. You feel like you're in a movie.
You're still a kid, aren't you?
“Definitely.” You finally answer him, finishing 70% of the bottle in a few gulps. You become a bit more lightheaded after that, and your eyes start to struggle to focus. You try to hide how slurred your voice wants to sound. “I confess I still don’t know how to really differentiate between the two.”
“Oh yeah?” His wistful tone gives place to one of amusement. “You never told me about your exes. Feel free to.”
“This is not about them.”
He turns to you, after a one-sided staring competition with his own cup. His voice is calm, and somehow even deeper, when he asks you: “Then who is this about?”
You gulp. The cramped space you were sitting on somehow feels even smaller. And hotter. You feel drops of sweat sliding on your belly. You’re sitting by his side, not in front of him, and that interaction feels almost… primal. You two are trapped by a huge table in a corner very few people can see.
“I think I need to go to the loo.”
He lets you, and you feel his eyes following you to the restroom.
My God. My God. My God.
You take a much longer time to do everything than you really need while reflecting on the dialogue you just had. You feel the ground is starting to spin, and the desire to sleep on literally any place grow. You’re drunk. And confused. And anxious.
You spend some good minutes staring at your own face in the mirror before you return to your table. He’s still in the moment, judging by the contemplative look on his face. This is the point of no return.
This is no movie – this is a fucking RPG.
“It was full,” you justify.
“Yeah, it’s always pretty crowded in there.”
That goddamn awkward silence again. You try to talk at the same time, but he wins.
“You still haven’t answered my question.”
“Yeah.” You clear your throat. “It’s… about a guy. He’s a…current… thing. Not from the past.”
“Right.” His tone is serious, more teacher-like than he has even acted while actually teaching you.
“I met him through an ad. I was looking for music teachers in my area and I found him. He had a fair price.” He was now smiling in disbelief, shaking his head. You’re both tipsy and you don’t care if your words are slurred anymore.
“And?”
“I have classes with him every Saturday. It’s the event of the bloody week for me. I can’t believe I’m saying that now because at first he seemed quite intimidating and not open to any meaningful interaction. Like, all frowns and monosyllabic answers and all.” You steal his drink, and he’s not even bothered. “We talk a lot, and even though we talk every day I somehow always thought he didn’t give a fuck about me when we were out of class. That he only saw me as a student, not as a friend, you know? I think about that chap every single day too. He’s handsome--like. Fuck. And he pays attention to everything I say. He’s always so nice to me, he makes me feel welcome. A part of… something.” You take a few more sips, and he gently takes the drink out of your hand, mouthing an ‘enough’. “He’s old enough to be my dad and I feel guilty for thinking of him that way. He invited me for drinks when my world fell so I could get my mind out of the shambles my life’s in and I almost died because I’m madly in love with him for a while now, but I don’t want to ruin everything. I don’t know what to do now. People shouldn’t start things thinking of how they’re going to end, but, you know?”
“They should, though. He’s indeed too old for you. And your life isn’t in shambles.”
“But…”
“Everything sounds pretty lovely in theory, but, he’s probably thinking that he’s going to slow you down in a way. You’ve got too much life to live. He’s probably really tired of everything he’s already lived.”
“But I love him. He makes me laugh! I don’t wanna have children.” You whine.
He muffles a laugh. “It’s not that-“
”Please take me home tonight.” You plead; your tone more serious now. “I know what I’m doing, I know where I am. Just please take me home.”
“Y/N…”
“Please, Damon. If you don’t feel the same then fine, call me an Uber and I’ll get over it.”
That triggers something in him, apparently, and he kisses you deeply and intensely. His hands caress your back and the whole kiss, though a little disjointed because of the state you’re both in, is full of affection and love. His lips taste of strawberry vodka, and your mind is spinning.
When your lips part, you stare at each other for a while, thousands upon thousands of thoughts per second, unsaid. “Are you sure you wanna come with me?” He asks, kissing your hand.
“Yes. I am.”
-
After he fumbles with his keys, you’re finally in his apartment – it’s surprisingly nice and tidy. Judging by how carefree he’s with his looks, you imagined that characteristic would overflow to other aspects of his life.
From the Uber drive home to his door, his hand never left yours.
He locks the door, and you stand staring intently at each other, sizing each other up like men before a fight. This time, you start the kiss, with a little less hurry than before. But the desire is still burning hot on both of you.
“Do you have any idea of what you’re doing to me?”, he murmurs, discarding his jacket while he does his best to not break the kiss. You take this as a signal to start taking off your clothes too, starting by kicking off your shoes. It has become a choreography of sorts - his hands grasp your buttocks and pulls you closer after you’re done with them, drawing a gasp from you.
“I wanted you for so long.” You reply, your hands exploring his body below the fine fabric of his shirt. You motion to take it away from him, and he lets you, completely entranced by how red your lips look from everything it went through. He guides you to his sofa, quickly adjusting it so it’s comfortable enough and serves as a bed for both of you.
He lies down first, eagerly waiting for you to stay on top of him. You finally do, and you feel like a goddess from the way he looks at your body. You take off your dress, and now you’re almost fully exposed to him. You have no bra on, and his hands immediately travel to your breasts, fingers running tantalizingly over your nipples to get them stiff and erect before he pinches them between his fingers, smiling at the whimper his actions elicit. You start bucking your hips on the rough fabric of his trousers, and you feel him harden below you. “God, you’re… something else.” he whispers, and you respond with another whimper, biting back a full on moan when your clit hits the perfect spot. You separate your legs a little further so you can feel him better, drawing a groan from him. He takes this a signal to take his jeans off, eyes not leaving your hips.
Now that a distance of an entire layer is shortened between you, the contact is even more intimate, and the bulge of his cock straining against his underwear is driving you mad. You’re aching for him. He brushes against you and your moan is higher than you expected, and you immediately cover your mouth in order not to wake up his neighbors. As he feels the wet heat of you around his painfully hard cock, he takes your hand out of your lips, grip then tightening on your hips as he pushes you down right on to him. Your moan is even louder. “Let them hear.”
“Fuck-Damon-I’m getting so close--” As if you just gave him a command, his hands now grab the flesh of your inner thighs, massaging them further and further up until he reaches the center of your arousal, and the sound you make when he pulls your panties to the side and runs his finger between your folds while still grinding against you is somewhere between a whine and a whimper. “Fuck, you’re so wet,” he says, voice rough from how excruciatingly aroused he is. “Come for me, baby.” Your clit was more exposed now, pressed more tightly against him and you whine in relief when your orgasm finally floods through your body.
Before you could fully recover, he finally frees himself from his underwear and, with your help, effortlessly aligns himself with your (quite ready) entrance. You bury your head in his neck the moment he enters you in one swift motion and your moans are almost like cries by now - the overstimulation is driving you insane. You take his face on your hands and give him a passionate kiss while he gradually picks up a merciless pace inside of you, the more heated the kiss becomes the more shamelessly you ride his cock. “Shit,” he mutters, massaging your breasts in an almost desperate way. It’s too much - you’re almost becoming one.
You could tell by how frantically he fucked you now that he wasn’t going to last much longer. His thrusts were becoming irregular and you were so close once again. His head falls forward, buried in between your neck and shoulder - his cock twitches inside of you and his movements become staccato, his mouth curving into a beautiful ‘o’ shape as he comes inside of you. His movements stop before you could reach your second one, but the entire situation you were on was so arousing to you that just by touching yourself while still feeling him inside was enough. Not letting you alone in this, one of his hands focus on one of your nipples while the other one is below yours, providing pressure above your clit. And like that, you come undone a second time, head above his shoulders.
For a few minutes, your panting was the only thing that could be heard inside of the apartment.
“Thank you. You were amazing. ’s been quite a long time.” He notes with a tender kiss on your forehead. After a while, and with much reluctance, he slides out of you, and gets up to fetch a warm, wet cloth and carefully clean you both, finally collapsing next to you with a groan.
