After leaving the courtyard Melinda heads straight to her mother’s office, knowing better than testing her mother, and once she is in the office Melinda sits down on the couch. For a few minutes Melinda wats, wondering how her mother is going to react.

Finally, after a wait that feels a lot longer than it actually was, the door to office opens and Jiaying walks in. As Jiaying sees where Melinda is she walks over and sits down next to her.

“Juan…” Jiaying starts to say, with a stern look on her face.

“Made Kora cry!” Melinda quickly says. “I had to do something,” Melinda tells Jiaying, showing just how protective she is of her sister.

“I understand wanting to protect your sister, but Melinda you used your training to cause pain,” Jiaying tells Melinda. “That’s not okay, it’s not something we have the luxury to do,” Jiaying admits.

“What do you mean?” Melinda asks, feeling confused.

“We’re inhuman, it’s an incredible gift, you will get your gift one day, but we also carry the responsibility of our people on our shoulders,” Jiaying tells Melinda, who gives her an interested look. “We’re different, and because of that there are people and beings who are afraid of us just because we exist,” Jiaying tells Melinda, honestly, she was hoping to wait a few years before having this conversation with Melinda, and Kora too for that matter, but after what Melinda just did she knows it’s time. “Everything you do effects not just you, but all of us. If you did what you did to Juan who someone who isn’t an inhuman you will give them a reason to fear us, to hate us, and that will be catastrophic,” Jiaying explains, trying not to think about what she has seen.

“That’s not fair! I was just defending Kora!” Melinda explains, feeling that she did the right thing by defending her sister as it’s what she always thought she should do.

“You’re right, it’s not fair, and I hope the day can come where we are not feared, where we can just protect, and live in peace, but I don’t know if that will ever happen,” Jiaying admits, it is one of her deepest wishes for Inhumans to live openly, side by side with humans without hate and fear. “But until that day we have to control ourselves. Melinda, you always have to think about how your actions effect not just you and our people; it can be a burden, but there is nothing more important,” Jiaying explains to Melinda, who looks like she is considering Jiaying’s words. “Do you understand?” Jiaying asks and Melinda nods.

“I’ve got to protect our people, but also help people understand us,” Melinda tells Jiaying.

“Exactly,” Jiaying tells Melinda, putting her arm around her. “Your skills are incredible, you’ve just got to use them for the right reason, in the right way,” Jiaying tells Melinda.

“I will,” Melinda promises and the two of them drift into silence.
