Okie dokie! Imma just come out and say I don't think He Tian fighting She Li is the right way to go

We all (to varying degrees) want to see She Li pay. I could do a whole compare/contrast on HT/SheLi dynamics; what makes them the same and different yadda yadda

BUT

Here's the thing: Having He Tian react to what She Li did completely defeats the purpose of Mo Guan Shan's character arc

There is a lot of emotions out here in this space that treat Mo like the "Damsel in Distress" trope. The thing is Mo has never been helpless; that is what his whole journey has been about (well, among other, incredibly gay things)

Firstly I think Mo is a character a lot of people identify with because 1) this is the character we have the most active knowledge about and 2) a LOT of his experiences mirror the average human being's (feeling wrong, being unable to match expectations, being insecure, doing good things and being punished for exposing that vulnerability, etc.)

Obviously his life is much more dramatic but the core essence is the same- he is a sensitive, naive person growing up in a harsh and unforgiving world. Mo is taken advantage of and is coloured as a burden on society (and who hasn't felt out of place in their world at one time or another)

Second(ly?) Mo is not helpless. His entire relationship with He Tian has been MGS pointedly NOT backing down to HT's demands (again, another post). Through these actions (and the unrelenting affection of the all the boys; "we miss you when you aren't around" vibe) Mo gained the strength to see a world beyond what he thought was possible for himself AND what he was capable of. Confronting She Li put all that into action

Third(ly??) This is STILL Mo's character arc, which means it should be Mo's decision on how to handle She Li. Not He Tian's. Mo is a bleeding heart- he yells and hits because if he looks too long in your eyes he'll see your sadness and, like a orphaned baby, he'll pick you up and take you home (cussing you out all the while). Moreso MGS isn't a revenge character, he doesn't look to who has wronged him and figure out ways to make the person hurt. That's why he's got friends like Buzzcut (he sees a person hurting and takes that burden for them.)

All this to say: Mo doesn't care about She Li(anymore), he focuses on the people in his life who matter. If She Li "accidently" got tossed into a garbage truck, well that's fine but it isn't the aim. Mo is FINALLY thinking about himself and a future that he actually looks forward too- and he came to that conclusion by himself (with the latest chapter369)

He Tian going to 'get revenge' on She Li not only continues the cycle of violence Mo has had to endure, but will only ignite further abuse to all sides of this issue. It Is Not Worth It

I mean I'm kinda embarrassed to ask this but for you think he tian and mo sleep together in the future I mean if you think about the story takes place in the past and you know mo and be tian have too be like 18 maybe 19 I dont know I always wonder will mo even let that happen between them because it is mo guanshan we are talking about

Hello, dear anon!

Please, no reason to feel embarrassed! I don’t mind these kinds of questions or talking about sex-related topics at all. The potentially physical aspect of the future Tianshan hasn’t come up that often, but I have touched upon it at least once before:

Confessing and being physical with each other

Anon had some interesting ideas about in what order things could turn out between Tianshan and how entering a physical relationship would fit into all that. I personally don’t put that much importance on getting a verbal confession. It will happen if it’s going to happen, but I can see their relationship develop even without one. I’m not sure if they will ever be “open” and verbal about things in the same way Zhanyi is.

Short answer, yes, I do.

I can definitely see why people might be hesitant to believe they will ever get there, but I can also see them taking that step. I mean, I doubt we will ever see that in the comic (for various reasons), but we’ll just have to use our imagination to fill in the blanks.

Let’s not forget they’re still in middle school. There is still a long way for them to go, but look at what progress they have made in a relatively short time. It just feels like eons to us.

Three things come to my mind when wondering the physical future of Tianshan and what makes me believe they will get there one day.

You mentioned that it feels like MGS would never want to take that “last” step with HT, and I can see why. His tsundere nature and how much he resists HT’s approaches on a daily basis tend to dampen the hope of ever seeing Tianshan becoming mutual, much less sexually active.

However, I don’t think MGS is unwilling to make decisions regarding his relationship with HT (ch. 283):

I doubt anyone was expecting him to ask HT for the studs, either, but it still didn’t feel out of character for him. I think that moment spoke about how MGS’s character works. For the most part, he’s a flustered tsundere mess who needs nudging and coaxing to get forward. But when he feels ready for it, he takes those steps by himself, too. And given MGS’s nature, those steps are something to which he’s ready to commit. He doesn’t make those decisions without thinking them through first and before he feels secure enough.

I wouldn’t say the studs were about him returning HT’s feelings, but I can see that same thing happening when they’re getting nearer to making their relationship physical. HT could have been angling for it for a while but I’m sure MGS wouldn’t let things progress until he’s comfortable with it. Nor would HT push him to do something sexual that he really doesn’t want to do. When MGS is finally ready, I doubt he would make such a face-on declaration of it. More like, if he’s letting HT get away with things, it means he has decided to do so.

The point is, even though MGS makes it all so difficult for us to believe they would ever get there, he might surprise you. And HT. He already has a couple of times.

Secondly, the Christmas specials have always kind of given me the vibe that there might already be a more physical aspect to their relationship (ch. 224, 313):

Of course, those panels could be very well taken just as HT being his pushy self and flustering MGS. I’m not trying to deny any of that interpretation. Actually, I think the topic of the boys being sexually active with each other might always be handled in this manner in the comic. It’s a fine line OX needs to tread, and MGS’s tsundere side gives the opportunity to leave the scenes and that topic kind of vague. HT makes a pass at him, MGS nervously sweats and curses at him, the end. The rest is left to us.

However - and I don’t know if this is just my wishful thinking - to me, that last panel especially of HT pushing MGS down always gives me a feeling that it wasn’t the first time it had happened. I can’t put my finger on what exactly makes me feel that way. Maybe the way HT seems to know how to go about pushing MGS down? Like he wasn’t doing it for the first time? And when it comes to being manhandled by HT, MGS doesn’t seem to have his guard as high as he used to? I’m not sure if I would go as far as saying they have had full-on sex already, but maybe they had made out some?

I don’t know. It’s just, something...Like, I wouldn’t have to stretch my imagination that much to picture HT leaning down and nuzzling MGS’s neck? And MGS would squirm under him and try to push HT off, but when HT’s warm weight slowly settles on top of him and he becomes kind of quiet in the crook of MGS’s neck...MGS frowns but he lets HT take a little moment. The bastard always seems so desperate to touch him, as if they will never see each other again.

And maybe, just maybe, being touched like that even causes a reaction in MGS’s body. But of course, such nonsense would be furiously denied when HT perks up and says “did you miss me, little Mo?” teasingly against MGS’s neck. And he would start nuzzling MGS in a different manner, dropping little kisses on the pale skin. Graze his teeth a little against the soft, sensitive spots? And MGS would still be struggling to free his hands, but his fingers are also digging into HT’s hand and HT can feel him shiver underneath him.

Something along those lines? Would that sound like too much of a reach?

Thirdly, there’s that one official illustration that is perhaps my most favorite of all the ones OX has published so far:

Sure, it could be argued how tightly the illustrations are tied to the canon of the actual comic. But since we all know Tianshan is the endgame, I don’t see why this one couldn’t be entertained at least as a promise of them getting to that point one day. And what’s the best part about that illustration (and what makes it my favorite) is how MGS is holding HT’s head. He’s not pushing him away or resisting, quite the opposite. It looks like he’s pulling HT closer. And judging by the way HT’s hair is falling down, he seems to be on top of MGS. So, at least something is happening.

Personally, I do see them getting physical in the future. I can picture it in my head despite how MGS is as a character. I am very doubtful we will ever see much of it in the actual comic, though. The most we’ll probably get is vague innuendo, conveniently cut scenes, and perhaps a kiss. But I don’t doubt that one day MGS will return HT’s romantic feelings and get more intimate with him.

Hey! I enjoyed your story with the chicken! I was wondering if you still took writing prompts and if yes if you could write something about the newest update with HT and MGS peeling a mango at the supermarket? Thank you, even if you don't have time to do it :)

He Tian looked over Mo Guan Shan’s shoulders at the mango being sliced by experienced hands.

Damn. It looked so easy when Mo Guan Shan did it. But He Tian had learned his lesson and would never try to help him do his job again. At least not when it came to the truly delicate stuff.

“Container!” Mo Guan Shan ordered, lifting his hand for He Tian to put a container in it.

He Tian gladly obliged, happy to be of help. Besides, he still owed Guan Shan for that one massacred mango. The boss had kept half of Guan Shan’s pay for that, which was just mean. But He Tian had never worked in a supermarket, so he had no idea if that was a normal thing or not. Anyway, from now on, he vowed he wouldn’t be a nuisance anymore. Guan Shan had been pretty upset with him.

“Lid!”

He Tian quickly put a lid in Guan Shan’s hands and watched how he wrapped up the mango so it was ready to be presented in the ‘ready-to-eat’-aisle.

“Mango!”

They worked like a well-oiled machine, He Tian thought, as he put a mango in Guan Shan’s hands. It had been a while since Guan Shan had snapped at him for doing something wrong. Although he was cute when he was annoyed, He Tian had come to appreciate the moments when they were just at peace with each other. Just existing in the same space together, the promise of a touch always hovering within reach. Something to be given willingly, not to be taken.

“Container!”

Wait a minute, He Tian thought, stopping in his tracks.

Had Guan Shan trained him like a dog?

Even now, he couldn’t help but to reach for a container and put it in Guan Shan’s waiting hand.

My God – it was true. He Tian had been… domesticated.

“Lid!”

He Tian watched his own hand reach for the lid and pass it along. How strange. If Guan Shan’s voice had ordered him to strip naked and do a chicken dance on the counter, He Tian would have probably done it.

“Brother Mo,” He Tian murmured against Guan Shan’s nape. It was funny to see the hairs there stand up when he did that. “Do you see me as a dog?”

Now the nape before He Tian’s face started to turn an alarming shade of red. Good thing he hadn’t been cutting a mango, because the lid promptly fell from Guan Shan’s hand.

“How… how did you know?” Guan Shan croaked.

“Wow!”

“It was just that one dog!”

“Huh?”

“It looked just like you!” said Guan Shan, turning to look at He Tian’s face, probably to check if he was mad.

“You saw a dog that looked like me?”

“It was sleeping on the street.”

“Wow,” He Tian said again. “You think of me as some kind of street dog? Even though I’m richer than you?”

“No!” Guan Shan said, turning back to his box of mango, fussing with the lid. “It was… cute.”

“Oh my God – was that the dog you doodle everywhere?”

“MANGO!” Guan Shan said loudly.

A mango appeared in his hand. He Tian blinked – he hadn’t even realized he was putting it there. Maybe Guan Shan should become a dog trainer or something.

They easily fell back into their routine. Maybe some weeks ago, He Tian would have prodded some more, trying his hardest to make Guan Shan blush and shout. But the more time they spent together, the more He Tian realized how nice it felt to have someone open up to him. Especially after how they had met. He had come to care for Guan Shan. Really care for him, not just wanting him.

He had never known that something was missing – at school, everyone loved him. Everyone respected or feared him. Guan Shan had done none of that, which was why he was so intriguing. He had fought He Tian’s advances every step of the way. But it had been worth it – now He Tian had someone by his side who didn’t suck up to him, who was ready to protect him, whom he could send messages to any time of the day, who was there to fill his big, empty apartment. Who wasn’t afraid of the darkness, even after experiencing it all first hand.

Guan Shan had not trained him like a dog, He Tian realized. He had simply made him a better person.

There was only one thing missing.

“Hey, Mo…” He Tian whispered against Guan Shan’s nape again.

“Hm?”

The voice sounded nonchalant, but He Tian could still see the little hairs rise.

“I never apologized.”

“What for?” Guan Shan asked, calmly cutting his mango.

He Tian really wanted to bury his face in Guan Shan’s nape. It was only inches from his nose and his skin smelled nice and warm.

He wondered what had brought this about. It was a fairly normal day, they were doing a fairly normal thing. Just standing there, in the supermarket, cutting up mango after mango. Still, He Tian felt like this was the time – the time to set something straight, something he had carried about with him for a long time.

“Back then… When I kissed you. I didn’t think you’d be so disgusted by it. But I should have known. I should have asked. I’m sorry.”

For a moment, Guan Shan simply stopped moving, knife still stuck in the mango. He Tian wondered what would happen now. They had never talked about it again. It had always been with them – the moment when Guan Shan turned away, disgust clear on his face. It had taken a lot to work past that moment. Or had they never truly worked past it at all?

He Tian was about to find out. Movement came back to Guan Shan – first of all, the skin on his neck reddened again, then the knife fell to the floor, along with the mango. He didn’t seem to care. He turned around to face He Tian, not even slightly taken aback by how close he was standing.

What was he going to say? He had a wild look in his eyes, so he was probably about to shout. He Tian braced for it, but all that happened was that Guan Shan reached for his supermarket cap, grabbed it by the visor, and turned it to the back of his head.

For some reason, that was funny. He Tian wasn’t sure why. Maybe because it reminded him of Ash Ketchum, about to point at He Tian and have his Pikachu shock him to dust.

Instead, Guan Shan leaned forward and kissed him.

It felt similar to being shocked to dust by a Pikachu, only so much better. There were hands on his neck, pulling him closer. He Tian couldn’t remember ever having been so close to any human. It was all he had wanted, all he had craved. Then Guan Shan’s mouth opened up and they were even closer, they were practically one.

He Tian couldn’t speak, once it was over. He could barely breathe. All he could do was look at those dark eyes in front of him and try to come up with words to express what he felt. Do it again. Never stop doing it.

I love you.

“Was that so damn hard, you idiot?” Guan Shan growled, letting go of He Tian’s face. Even though his voice didn’t waver, his red face betrayed him. He was just as shaken as He Tian.

Was this apology all he had been waiting for? He Tian could have kicked himself for not apologizing earlier. He had assumed that never bringing it up again would somehow make Guan Shan forget it. He had assumed that his eye-for-an-eye-style apology would cover it all, but that was stupid, of course. By beating up She Li, He Tian had proved he could protect Guan Shan from other people. But he had never proved that he could protect Guan Shan from himself.

“I’m sor-“ He Tian tried to say again, but a movement from behind Guan Shan caught his eyes and he trailed off.

The boss woman was standing there, and she was looking at the mango, which had rolled to the floor.

“Uhm…”

He had no time to warn Guan Shan – the woman was already screaming.

“GO HOME!” she yelled, making Guan Shan jump to face her. “YOU ARE COMPLETELY USELESS TODAY! I DON’T PAY YOU TO TOSS MY PRECIOUS MANGOES TO THE FLOOR!”

She took a deep breath.

“IN FACT – I WON’T!” she screamed. “NO PAY FOR TODAY!”

“Shit!” Guan Shan moaned under his breath. “Not again!”

The woman took another deep breath, but this time, it suddenly turned her completely calm.

“Other than that,” she said, pointing between the two of them, “Congratulations. He is really quite good looking.”

With that, she trotted away, leaving a completely shocked pair of teenagers and a few startled costumers in her wake.

“You cost me another payday!” Guan Shan scolded, once he gained his wits back.

“Can I pay you back with kisses?” He Tian grinned.

“No!”

“But I’m really quite good looking!”

“Still no,” said Guan Shan. “I got used to it. Besides, you look like a dog, remember?”

“Wow”, said He Tian, a third time. “Must have been a really quite good-looking dog, that one.”

They left the supermarket, bickering like an old married couple. He Tian didn’t even have to ask Guan Shan to come over. That was just normal now. Just like the brush of their hands as they walked side-by-side, just like the light in Guan Shan’s eyes, just as the protectiveness and the honesty and the vulnerability.

The trust, though.

The trust was new.

aah i agree im vry disappointed in this chapter ! like its good like usual, but its kind of a let down after the last 5 chapters... ht rly exposed himself minutes before, and comedy aside, MGS answered him by ignoring him, and then saying "were not friends, were not as close as you think we are". it must have been hurtful for HT, its basically a rejection of recognizing HT vulnerabilities. and its totally In character for MGS to say this, so im not disappointed by it 1/?

i mean HT lay his heart down for Mo to see and theyve known each other for 15 DAYS, its too soon for anybody and especially for Mo who have mistrust problems to respond in the same way ? so running away and deflecting the declaration is cool, i wasnt excepting a "ill never abandon u!!" lol. but then HT being cool with this rejection and having a slapstick comedy just after doesnt feel right. mb show HT swallowing and being disheartened, and then put his usual facade and only then have comedy 2/?

would have been good, bc we would have known "oh ht is actually hurt by MGS reaction but doesnt know how to say it, so he plays it cool and change the subject bc hes still not at ease with being vulnerable". a realistic situation would have been "ht tried to be vulnerable but it was too soon, too much for mo who rejected him, so it confirmed ht biased thinking that showing vulnerabilities is bad and it will prevent ht to be vulnerable in front of someone in the near future". 3/?

i mean it could have been a nice although sad conclusion for this mini-arc, especially since ht have been grieving (?) his mother just this morning. a little step back, and then smth else happen and cause ht to crack completely but then mo is able to respond present and its a step forward. ok im daydreaming but that would have been climatic lol. instead this..ah i dont know i feel cheated, i know its ox' work but still haha ! like when they do an abrupt change of scene after an emotional page 4/

its a trick ox use often and after 300 chapters it feels old n cheap. when u engage in a emotional scene, u cant just do "oops i change my mind!!" and put slapstick comedy or ignore totally what just happened and dont have a progression. u have to stay on this road : u cant put traumatizing backgrounds and mafia affairs and mature problems (kidnapping, mother being threatening into prostitution,etc) n just.. not stick with it and making ur characters not traumatized by it and just 'lol comedy'.

sry im kind of monopolizing ur askbox lol, i guess im kind of frustrated ! it just the last chapters were so good and it was a while since ox use this cheap trick of not going through an emotional scene that i kind of forgot how terrible they were at handling transition between drama and comedy. theyre a good artist all in all (or i wouldnt be this disappointed!!), but they have this failing in their writing an it drives me nuts each time lmao. haa i hope next chapter will be better...5/5

Hell yeah, DEFINITELY, that sums up my thoughts. Also, you don't have to apologize, it was an interesting read and I can tell that you feel strongly about it. While I can’t say that I’m flat-out disappointed, as I wrote in my original post, I’m definitely feeling lukewarm and indifferent about the recent ch.

OX touched upon a few serious matters a couple of chapters before: namely She Li’s fucked up goading and the way it unsettled He Tian -- unsettled in no joking manner as follows from his reaction. Then we get He Tian swearing to beat up anyone who dares bully Mo, and the whole profound monologue from the previous chapter. Just as you say, He Tian truly laid himself bare there. One could argue that He Tian listed the reasons he was enamoured with Mo, or one could argue that he subtly commented on the milieu he grew up in, or one can even read it as He Tian admitting/reflecting on his flaws out loud. There are many ways to construe this scene, each of them is extremely meaningful. Not to mention it took HT visible effort to say these things out loud.

The problem which both you and I noticed is that OX left this mini-arc/mini-subplot unresolved. Instead, they abruptly switched to comedic relief. Much like you, I wasn’t expecting a big reaction from Mo -- no grand verbal declarations at very least. What I expected was a panel (maybe a close up of Mo’s face as I mentioned in my original post) that indicated he actually HEARD what HT told him, that it gave Mo some food for thought.

As you mention, Mo getting disconcerted and doing the tsun-tsun escape is fairly in character for him. Still, a panel like this would have been very welcome to emphasize his confusion and to justify him not gracing the other boy with an answer, ignoring HT showing his underbelly (which is something that doesn't come easy for him, as we readers know). Okay, sure, OX handled it differently this chapter -- we get Mo silently running away and blurting out the first comeback he could think of. No problem. It works to show that HT’s words had an effect on him, albeit it’s much less pronounced, than, say, the Aquarium scene -- again one would have to wonder why: HT’s “don’t abandon me” is just as strong, if not stronger, than “I’m afraid you’ll forget me”, so it follows that Mo should have been just as affected.

The problem is the way an emotionally charged moment quickly fizzled out into comedy. As you said, Mo blurting out “we are not friends, we are not familiar enough, so I don’t care what you think (of me)!” SHOULD have hit HT harder. Just minutes before we had HT being genuinely disturbed by the idea of someone looking to intentionally hurt Mo, seeking physical comfort, being disquieted by the idea of getting abandoned and losing someone he likes, confessing that he admires the other boy -- yet when Mo utters yet another curt rejection of sorts, we are not shown HT’s reaction, which, logically, should have been there.

And all of that emotional build-up is cheapened by an accidental dick slap comedy.

Indeed, showing HT being hurt (disquieted? deflated?) and then putting on a cool guy mask, and ONLY then switching to a slapstick humour would have been more appropriate. It wouldn’t have taken a big or an overly dramatic scene either -- just, IDK, show HT’s eyes widening, or his throat clicking, or his posture slumping, anything to indicate that Mo’s words affected him -- that the whole thing mattered to him. Otherwise, it leaves a bad taste in one’s mouth: “so Imma confess to the person I like and swear to protect them and beg them to put up with me -- oh! forget anything serious that I said, Imma touch some dick now”. While I don't have an issue with comedy coming into focus again, I do wish it hadn't been this abrupt. Had there been a better transition between these scenes, there wouldn't be this "lol jk" vibe that I’m getting.

So yeah, I, too, feel a little cheated. OX certainly has an issue with drama-comedy transitions, which are sort of hit-and-miss for me. Sometimes they work well to alleviate the grave mood, other times they appear to be out of place. The recent chapter is the latter case. Dangling a possibility of climatic resolution for the subplot and then intentionally subverting it just doesn’t work in favour of the plot here. It cheapened the emotional part and made the comedy feel much less fun for me. Of course, no one says that writing is an easy task. Plenty of mangakas, for instance, work with writers to strengthen their script and plots, so it’s challenging when a single person is responsible for both drawing and planning the story. OX is undoubtedly doing a tremendous job. Still, I wish they wouldn’t stick to using the old trick this monastically because it's becoming a trite writing device and works against them on occasion. It’s totally fine to keep the comic light-hearted yet it’s not good to ignore the needed dramatic development.

A/N: This is a work of fiction that I pulled out of my ass. In its entirety. Procedures, regulation and jargon included. There is, however, a glossary of terms at the end of this post that tries to make sense of things.

The pit was swathed in layers of slumber, the overhead lights set low as the night approached its darkest hour.

He wasn’t sure what he’d expected during the third shift, but this was not it. The silence was unsettling, bordering on sinister.

The soft click of keys. The steady hum of computer fans. The stop-and-start stutter of a colleague snoring in a darkened corner.

Soon after he’d punched in, he’d dealt with two PIs and a neighbourly disturbance. But fuck all since. And the stillness was making his skin crawl.

It was nearing three am, though, and he was due a break. He was about to swivel round in the high-back chair to clear it with his dispatch supervisor when his phone monitor lit up. The emergency line.

Adjusting his headset, he picked up the call and immediately turned his attention to the mapping system on the central screen as it tried to triangulate the caller’s location.

“Nine-one-one. What’s your emergency?” Guan Shan said into the mouthpiece, frowning slightly when the mapping system sputtered its failure to ping the cellular device.

A rupture of ragged breathing abraded his right ear.

“Nine-one-one,” he repeated, wondering what the statistics were on perverts prank-calling emergency services.

A throaty moan adjourned the breathless rasping, sounding wet and wounded.

“What is the location of your emergency?” Guan Shan tried again, more urgent this time.

What the fuck?

Two weeks post training and initiation, Guan Shan’s most exciting call yet had been a GTA that had lasted all of ten minutes – casualties: nil. Although a desk job was not the endgame, moonlighting as a 911 operator whilst he studied for the EMT license exam would help cushion the blow the paramedic training fees were going to deliver to his malnourished bank account.

Running the ATL on the mapping system again, Guan Shan quickly scanned the screen to his left. The list of incoming calls to the county’s PSAP were sparse, a Code Red notably absent.

Just as he inhaled, readying himself to reiterate his opening line, a clamorous clatter rang in his ear, followed by a series of sibilant curses.

“Hello?” The voice at the other of the line, smooth as silk and husky like cigarette smoke, was distinctly male.

Guan Shan ignored the way the fine hairs at his nape prickled. “Sir, what is your emergency?”

“Well, I’m not sure how much of an emergency a man at death’s door constitutes.” All facts and no filler. “He’s fucked.” The words were enunciated on a knife’s edge. And sent a chill to the hollow of Guan Shan’s spine.

But Guan Shan had shed blood, sweat and snot over the Emergency Management and Communications modules and there was no fucking way this dickhead was going to throw him off.

“What is your location?” Fingers flying over his primary keyboard, Guan Shan pulled up the live rota on unengaged EMT vehicles. Due to recent cutbacks, there were plenty of ambulances but not enough crew. “Sir?”

A withering exhale. “You’ll have to track the phone. Somewhere in the ass crack of fuck-knows-where.”

Guan Shan ground his teeth, suppressing a sour retort – partly irked by the man’s unhelpful response and deliberate disregard, and partly irked by how erotic he sounded with said disregard. In particular, the way he said ‘fuck’ with the faint, fluid hint of a high-bred accent made Guan Shan’s ears heat up.

“What can you see around you? Any landmarks?” Guan Shan asked as he launched the medical emergencies algorithm, the rapid click-click-click of the plastic keys matching the speed of his heart, beat for beat. He’d never managed a critically-unstable casualty outside of a simulation before.

“Desert. Dirt. A beat-up truck.” Pause. “A bleeding man on his last breath.”

“Can you apply pressure to the wound?”

A soft sound in Guan Shan’s ear suggested a smirk. “Depends. Which would you rather: death by exsanguination or asphyxiation?”

The shit? “Ex-excuse me?”

The man lowered his voice to a tortured pitch and Guan Shan tensed in his seat. “There’s a gaping, toothless grin where his neck used to.”

Fucking-A.

Trepidation torched Guan Shan’s nerves as sawdust filled his mouth. “Who did that to him?” Was the perpetrator on the premises? Was the RP in danger? Or did Guan Shan have a homicidal psycho on the line?

A moment passed, the only sound in Guan Shan’s ear the slow, even breaths of a man who wasn’t used to being questioned.

“How green are you, rookie? There’s only me and this shithead for miles in every direction.”

“Tell me.” Guan Shan hissed. Tell me what you did, you arrogant prick. And then tell me where you are so I can unleash a squad on your ass.

“I slit his throat,” the raw edge to the voice was savage.

“Why –” Guan Shan clamped his mouth shut before the rest of that sentence escaped. Fuck almighty. With brisk taps, he alerted EMS and the sheriff’s office of the Code Red: Assault in Progress.

He needed a location.

“What is this, couple’s therapy?” The man sneered. “Why does anyone kill?”

Guan Shan’s gaze flickered back to the central monitor; the mapping system was still struggling to pick up a cell signal.

“Duty,” the man started, tongue rolling tenderly over the ‘t’ like a lover. “Derangement. Or self-defence.”

Derangement. Without a fucking doubt.

“Where the hell are you?” Guan Shan whispered, more to himself, fists clenching briefly over his keyboard before he resumed typing again.

“I thought you were tracking the phone?” The almost-stammer in the man’s voice was so slight Guan Shan nearly missed it.

What was that? Fear? Exhaustion?

“I’m trying.” Guan Shan insisted, sending an SOS message to his dispatch supervisor. “But accuracy relies on a number of factors: the model of the phone, signal strength –”

“Figures,” the man interrupted. “It’s a burner. Production lines probably dried up last century. He doesn’t have anything else on him.”

“What about your own phone?”

“He took all my shit. Dumped it en route.”

Growing more confused, Guan Shan pressed his lips together and back-pedalled to triage. “Are you hurt?”

A throaty chuckle. “I’m not dead or dying. And that’s all that really matters, right?”

Mother of fuck. He wasn’t getting anywhere with this dickhead.

Guan Shan startled as a hand landed on his shoulder – it was his supervisor. Muting the line, Guan Shan indicated the spazzing mapping system. “I can’t get coordinates.”

With a grim look, his supervisor took in the electronic log, the Code Red alert, and said, “I’ll work location from my pod. You stay on intel.”

“Yes, ma’am.” Guan Shan acknowledged the order with a dip of his head and unmuted the call. “Help me out here. I can’t dispatch a unit to fuck-knows-where,” he muttered into his mouthpiece, a cold bead of sweat sliding down the back of his neck. “How’s the other guy doing?”

“Still twitching.” The words were choppy, the inflection flat. “Listen.” The man heaved a deep sigh, sounding tired and battle-torn. “I haven’t had anything to drink in the last twenty or so hours. And nothing to eat for longer than that. I haven’t slept since fuck knows when. I used the last of my reserves to take this shithead out.” An audible swallow. “I’m tired. And dehydrated. And furious as all fuck. But when his buddy realises something’s up, he’s gonna hightail it to this godforsaken dry land and fuck me up.” An amused chortle tickled Guan Shan’s ear. “And all I got is a rusty switchblade and shitty night vision. Plenty of fucks to give, but not enough juice to fuel ’em.”

Guan Shan’s mouth went from dry to arid.

No way.

No fuckin–

“Who are you?” Guan Shan asked, sounding much calmer than he felt, fingers poised over the keys that would spell the RP’s name out.

The man didn’t need to say it; Guan Shan already knew. Should have known the minute the man had spoken. Not because his face had been on every news station in the country for the last three days. Nor because of his high-profile status. ‘Plenty of fucks to give…’ But because of one rainy night with no cab in sight, an exclusive bar that begrudgingly provided shelter, and a bottle of Johnnie Walker Blue that kept on tipping.‘ … but not enough juice to fuel ’em.’

A night that should have been forgettable, but wasn’t. Touches that should have remained anonymous, but hadn’t. Masks of sultry indifference that should have stayed in place, but had slipped, slipped, slipped.

Two years on, and every rainstorm was sweet torment on Guan Shan’s senses; a reminder of a night that shouldn’t have happened, of a risk he shouldn’t have taken.

“He Tian,” came the haggard reply. “My father is the state prosecutor.”

Grabbing his radio gear, Guan Shan hit the transmission button and barked, “This is Oscar Paris Two-Five-Five, Delta Havana, do you copy? Over.”

A sizzle of static burst through the radio’s speaker. “Delta Havana receiving. Over.”

“The twelve-nine on the Code Red is a twelve-one. Over.”

“Repeat dispatch. Over.”

“The Code Red is a twelve-one. I repeat, the Code Red –” Guan Shan dropped the radio-speak “– is the Chief Prosecutor’s son. Immediate threat to life. Over.”

“Ten-four. Do we have a location? Over.”

Fuck. “In progress. Over.”

“Ten-four. Standing by. Over.”

He Tian laughed a little, but the sound was a dry and ragged thing. “That was… kinda hot, rookie.”

“Look, we’re gonna find you.” Sifting through the notes he had taken so far, Guan Shan said, “You mentioned a truck.”

“Yeah,” He Tian replied wryly. “But I can’t drive stick.”

Had the circumstances been different, Guan Shan might have rolled his eyes. “The suspect picked this specific location. It isn’t random. He would have needed to find his way back. Is there a navigation system in the vehicle?”

He Tian hummed in agreement. “Yeah, okay. I’ll check.” There was a rustle of movement, punctuated by a pained grunt.

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.”

Shit. He was hurt. Running only on adrenaline, it wouldn’t be long before He Tian crashed.

“Take it easy,” Guan Shan instructed. “And stay on the line. How many accomplices does the suspect have?”

“I only ever saw one other guy. He wanted to give my dad another day to cough up the ransom. But this shithead here said he was done babysitting.” An obnoxious creak of unoiled hinges screeched into Guan Shan’s ear. “Brought me here to put a bullet in my head.”

As Guan Shan fed the information electronically to the police coordinator, he added the relevant codes to indicate armed perps and firearms at the scene.

“Fuck yeah, rookie. Good call.” He Tian chuckled. “There’s a marked map here. And a Gatorade.”

With He Tian relaying the approximate longitude and latitude over the phone, Guan Shan was able to zero in on a location on the mapping system. He picked up his radio phone.

“Delta Havana, this is Oscar Paris Two-Five-Five. Over.”

“Go ahead, Oscar. Over.”

“We need to mobilise a chopper. Over.”

“Ten-four. What are the coordinates? Over.”

Once he’d rattled them off, Guan Shan sent an urgent message to his dispatch supervisor to authorise his request for air support; it was the quickest and safest way to reach that far in the desert this time of the night.

The mapping system refreshed itself and a green dot appeared on the screen, zinging its way to the red dot in the ass crack of fuck-knows-where. ETA seven minutes.

“He Tian,” Guan Shan began, “there’s a helicopter on its way.”

But He Tian appeared distracted. “Uh-huh.”

“I still need you to stay on the line til –” A deafening bang blasted through the headset. “Fuck! What was that? He Tian?” Right ear ringing, Guan Shan checked that the call hadn’t dropped. “He Tian?”

Fuckfuckfuck.

He slammed down the transmitter button on his radio. “Oscar Paris Two-Five-Five to Echo Gold, do you copy? Over.”

“Echo Gold receiving. Over.”

“Shots fired.” Fffuuuckk. “I repeat, shots fired.”

“Ten-four. We’re still in the air. Do you still have comms with the RP? Over.”

Guan Shan worked the muscles in his jaw. “Negative,” he whispered.

Fucking shit.

The helicopter was still three minutes out. And that was assuming they’d find the right location straight away. And a suitable place to land.

Running tremulous hands through his hair, Guan Shan stopped himself from wreaking havoc on the curved desk and the console before him.

So close, he thought. We were so fucking close.

A soft murmur in his ear had Guan Shan stilling. “He Tian?”

Another pained grunt. Oh sweet fuck.

“Sorry,” He Tian said, his voice like smoked honey. “I dropped the phone. I told you I couldn’t fucking drive stick. I think… I think the engine backfired.”

Guan Shan laughed despite himself. Fully aware that the audio was being recorded, and the transcript may be used in evidence, he let out a low growl, laden with chocked emotion. “You owe me another Johnnie Walker, you dickhead.”

She Li x Mo Guanshan

What’s their relationship, really?

*tinfoil hat time* (edit: I wrote this before Ch.294! Looks like I was on to something~~)

We don’t know much about She Li, other than he’s the school’s gang leader, and is cruel and very violent. But what is his connection with Mo? We know that there is some kind of debt between them; seeing how She Li mentions that he saved Mo’s life. I think that this might have something to do with his family, because I just don’t see Mo being THAT willing to give himself to SL’s control so easily.

However, I wonder if they go back even farther? We saw a scene of Mo being bullied in elementary; and I think that Mo and She Li may have a past that runs even deeper than we think. Obviously this is all speculation; but I think there has to be more to it than She Li just “saving mo”.

If you haven’t noticed, She Li seems to be the only character thus far (besides his family) that Mo treats differently. The way they conversate, Mo never, or rarely, raises his voice to him in anger. He speaks to He Tian, Jian Yi, & Zhang Zhengxi very curtly and rudely, never missing a moment to voice his displeasure with something they’re doing. But with She Li, he almost becomes a completely different person. Milder, obedient, and docile, similar to the way he is with his family. I think this is do partially to fear, but like I said, I think it extends farther than that. I think Mo and She Li May have actually been close when they were younger.

Maybe “saving mo’s life”, was She Li befriending him, stopping the other kids from bullying him. She Li might have been the very first person in Mo’s life that he considered himself close to. And that was what started their relationship. Now, maybe there was something else She Li did that made the “debt” cemented; but maybe Mo feels beyond that, a sense of loyalty to She Li? It would make more sense to me as to why Mo treats She Li so differently. He’s afraid of him, but not so much so that he won’t stand up to him. As we’ve seen him do when he was defending Buzzcut from She Li’s wrath. The fact that Mo even felt he was in the position to tell She Li “I want to talk with you...” definitely suggests to me there was more than just a leader/follower relationship between those two. Why would he think She Li would listen to him in the first place? None of the other members would dare.

Bringing He Tian into this, we know just how resistant Mo has been with him. Trying to defy him at every corner, arguing at every moment, cursing at him. As much as He Tian gave him, he would give back (and I mean technically HT is a bully to Mo on some level, not like She Li ofc), so why isn’t Mo like this with She Li? He’s seen how scary He Tian is, he’s seen how powerful he is, he’s seen how terrifying his family is; why doesn’t he treat He Tian in the same way? It could be because he doesn’t want to go down that route again; he doesn’t want to be “owned” and owe anyone, like he experienced with She Li. But again, I can’t help but to think there’s way more to She Li and MGS past than we know about.

Another question I have is, why did She Li turn up at the hospital? The fact that he even said “Why didn’t you tell me you were in the hospital?” is really weird to me. Why would Mo tell him ANYTHING about what he’s doing? Why does She Li think Mo needed to inform him of his whereabouts, and that he was hurt?

I don’t believe that She Li was behind the men beating up Mo, because those were men that his family owe money to. I think he went to the hospital on his own accord, to genuinely check up on Mo. Obviously he has some anti-social personality disorder because he clearly DOES NOT know how to deal with people properly.

When he said “I brought you this knife as a gift”.........ok, imma just say it-I actually believe him LMAO. It’s absolutely ridiculous, but I really do believe this is She Li’s way of trying to either get close enough to Mo to manipulate him back with him, or to “apologize”. It’s crazy, I know, but I do believe She Li and Mo have a history deeper than what we’ve been told thus far.

Nobody asked my opinion but...

The last chapters have been like one of those wooden rollercosters that you swear you want to ride but then when you are actually there sitting and putting on the security strap that let's be honest has seen better days you start to regret the choices you have made in life, most people look exited, others are feeling sick to their stomach and then there is me who has no idea wtf is happening but hoping for the best, so let me start with this

Mo is failing in life big time, he lost his job and I can assure you that he isn't doing great in school either, believe me when I tell you that if you have a page full of math problems that you can understand there is no way in hell you rip that page off no sir you believe yourself a genius and look for a page that you don't even know what half of those symbols mean and take your frustration in that one because either way you weren't going to do that shit, well same happened to MGS

He was "lucky" enough to vent on HT because he knows he can get away with murder with him, so he doesn't feel guilty immediately like with any other person, if this has been JY they would have talked Mo would have pushed JY, ZZX would have come to his rescue and JY makes MGS talk and then we all hug because we have a wholesome chapter, but this is not JY not ZZX, let's face it Mo wouldn't explode with Xixi he would have just left and ZZX wouldn't even ask why, unfortunately for us this was HT and yes he usually takes it, Mo could stab him and he would say "aww you missed all important organs, does that mean you love me?~" but this HT is not in his right state of mind, the usual HT doesn't think much of it we can even see him looking at his phone in case Mo sends a message but that changes as soon as JY mentioned he wishes to be this happy for his entire life

This HT believed Mo's words, there was no message, to be honest there's barely any even in regular days should he wait longer? Look for him tomorrow? Is there any point in doing any of this?? ... this time he took the wound and is hoping to die of it because his only happiness is about to vanish anyway so what's the point on waiting for a miracle??

He has tried his hardest to convey his feelings and Mo doesn't acknowledge them, he has tried to let him know that he can rely on him that he can share the burden but Mo keeps pushing him away and even in his darkest hours he didn't share his sorrow with the other 2, how do I know this??? Because they're not with him, Jian Yi would have stayed with him call MGS and make a big deal out of this, but HT keept this to himself because he only allows himself to be vulnerable arround Mo.

On the other side we have Mo thinking that HT is going to bother him the next day as usual and maybe he's gonna have to stare at him for like .02 seconds and HT is going to come his way no biggie until reality hits him, he saw his mom and his head started to cool down and thats when he remembers what he said

You see the phrase "what does your happiness has to do with me?!" Is a double edge sword, he said it because he usually repeats what people tells him on his insults like "you're in love your whole family is in love" or "you're the maid..." and so on so when he said that he actually didn't mean it he just did his usual thing and by saying this he hurt himself, there is no sigle happy moment in Mo's current life that doesn't involves HT

But this Mo doesn't know that HT is leaving in a few days, this Mo has no idea that his happiness is also about to go away, I don't know if you have been there economically speaking but for sure you or someone has done what MGS did to HT and there is never an easy way out of it neither of them are guilty free, both of then suck at talking about their problems and don't even think about reaching for help, the second Guan Shan knows about the transfer he's going to feel like crap and probably there is not going to be a HT to hug him and tell him everything is going to be alright not because he doesn't want to but because he told him to go away

I feel like Mrs. Mo would be shocked at first, perhaps even conflicted but ultimately she would come to be happy for her son. She knows it’s not easy to get close to him, so if someone has slipped under the rope, they’re probably someone she could approve of and trust her child to. If her son has let someone get close enough to develop feelings for them, the gender is irrelevant. Also, their relationship strikes me as the kind that MGS would be able to tell her if such time ever comes.

...MGS’s quiet “idiot” will keep occurring (ch. 185, 243):

MGS is the kind of a tsundere that will patch you up or keep you from killing yourself while scolding you softly. In his mind, HT can’t be all right in the head if he’s so eager to fight and get hurt for MGS. It’s not something MGS is used to. A part of MGS is scared of such devotion and, even more worryingly, scared for HT but it also feels kind of nice and safe. It makes him feel complicated feelings, and all the conflict and concern comes out in a softly uttered “idiot” as he watches HT standing up for someone like him.

Also, if HT thinks MGS will just listen to him and run like a coward from his own damn fight, he’s sorely mistaken. Fuck that damsel in distress crap, they’re going to run together.

..MGS will come to trust that he’s not fending for himself (ch. 188):

It’s good that he wants to be independent, but there are pretty impressive people around him if he ever needs someone to rely on. Despite how little MGS thinks of himself, they’re ready to raise hell for him.

I recently read a beautifully written KiriBaku fic (X) that had an interesting paragraph:

The line. They serenaded it like fools with nothing to lose. As Kirishima puts it, the whole world and you. The whole world and Bakugou. Every damn thing that could matter to Kirishima on one side, and Bakugou on the other.

I was kind of taken aback by the idea of putting a line between the world and this one person. “The whole world and you”. In the fic, the meaning was a bit different, but I feel like that would also apply to future Tianshan.

HT is the line, the barrier, between everyone and everything else and MGS. It’s his way of protecting and keeping MGS safe. But it also marks the duality of HT’s life, especially if he ends up working with his family in the future. MGS has to be kept separate from everything else, and HT is a different person when he’s in MGS’s side of the line.

“The whole world and you” is both beautiful and sad.

I don’t know what would happen if HT ever lost MGS for good.

...HT will always have a “safe place” with MGS (ch. 255, 291, 313):

Tired and weary. Starving for contact and closeness. Recharging after being away. It doesn’t matter what HT is needing, he will feel secure and safe enough with MGS to ask for them. He won’t necessarily get what he’s asking for but at least he can show those sides and needs.

Not that it would be in MGS’s nature to turn his back on others when they’re in need of serious help. But I want him to keep being his caring self especially for HT. When he doesn’t quite know what to say or how to act. When he’s debating admitting something to HT or to himself. I want him to keep having conflicted feelings because it means the way he’s seeing his relationship with HT is developing. When MGS doesn’t have a curse launched on the tip of his tongue or it suddenly gets stuck somewhere, it’s a good sign. He’s at a crossroads.

I don’t want them to be a perfect couple but actually prefer a twirl of darkness to always be there. But that doesn’t mean they can’t get better at it.

Again, I don’t wish HT to lose his edge. I want him to remain dark, pushy and mischevious but also be able to recognize when he’s overstepped. It doesn’t have to be “I’m sorry” necessary but some kind of sign he’s feeling bad. I think HT apologizing with some affection is also a way for him to show MGS his softer side.

No screaming, no cursing. Just them in a dim room and talking, getting to know each other. No emotional heart-to-hearts but rather HT showing genuine interest and MGS feeling like someone is taking his words seriously. I’ve talked about that panel before. MGS had been looked down not only by other students but the teachers as well. And that’s pretty damn heartbreaking. It doesn’t have to be school and studying, but I want MGS to do something that shows all the teachers were wrong about him.

JY’s fair skin looks soft to touch, and his eyes are so in love with ZZX it’s overwhelming. Without even realizing he’s moving, ZZX reaches to brush the unruly wisps of hair and tuck them behind JY’s ear. JY’s almost non-existent eyebrows shot up, and he freezes under the touch. ZZX thinks he even stops breathing for a while.

“Nothing.”

That. I want that to happen one day.

...ZZX will get more jealous (ch. 224):

JY gets even more touchy-feely than usual when he’s drunk. And it’s annoying to the max when JY drunkenly clings to ZZX but for some reason, it’s even more annoying when JY is like that with other people.

I want to see more of ZZX silently pouting in the background.

...JY will have surges of sudden happiness (ch. 224):

I don’t know how to explain that feeling exactly but I’ve always called them “surges of sudden happiness”. When you’re doing something completely ordinary but suddenly, you’re interrupted by this feeling of...”damn, I’m really happy right now, right in this moment”. It doesn’t last long but it doesn’t have to.

I want JY to look at ZZX and have that moment. When you’re looking at the person you’re in love with and think “damn, that person makes me so happy and I want to cherish them for the rest of my life”. He’s overcome by sappiness and affection and nothing else than showing it to ZZX matters at that moment.

As much as I love Tianshan, I need the fluffy cotton candy of Zhanyi to take my sappiness out on something.

...JY will become strong (ch. 280, 313, 314):

It’s not that I don’t want ZZX to protect him. I want JY to become strong for his own sake. He’s always felt inferior when it comes to physical strength and standing up for himself, and I want him to become better at it. I want him to start putting in the work and not feel like a weakling anymore. Even if it meant he can run away faster.

Overall, I most definitely agree that Tianshan and Zhanyi are vastly different kinds of relationships. That’s why I don’t expect them to end up the same way either. I believe they will both be happy in the way that suits their respective dynamics; Zhanyi being fluffy and gentle, Tianshan being more angsty and less conventional meaning of “happy”.
